My girlfriend and I love this place, but the one time we brought some friends out to experience it with us, the server spilled an entire tray of beverages, including beer, water and water on one of our friends, and she had to go home and change before a show we were seeing at Frederick Meijer Gardens.. There was no manager presence, no one came to see if we were doing alright, and in the end, none of the items on the table (or all over our friend) were comped.. It's disappointing-- a place that we highly recommend didn't know how to, and didn't have the staff to handle a situation like this.. Great place 3 out of 4 times.. My wife and I came here for anniversary this year and loved it! My wife isn't a big adventurous eater, so when I suggested eating hear she was a little unsure. However, do the course of the meal her and I came to realize this is going to be one of our new favorite places! I went with the spicy tuna, she went with the Bibimbop both meals were great. The miso soup was a little too heavy on the seaweed,and a little too lite on the miso for my taste, but every restaurant has their own little spin on it. We also had an order of chicken tempura as an appetizer, the sauce it came with was super yummy. Jaku is at the top of my list for unique, delicious, reasonably pricedsushi rolls. There is a small beer and wine list at this location (unlike the south one) if you choose to imbibe. My favorite part about Jaku is that they cater to everyone, so non-sushi eaters (like my DH) will find a variety of appetizing alternatives without feeling like the restaurant only caters to the sushi eaters. The Mayberry roll is so interesting with dried strawberries (it sounds so odd, but it is amazing!!), is a must try! I really enjoy Jaku. They have really fresh sushi that makes it totally worth giving it a try. They have fresh sushi that is filling and a generous portion, every time. I really recommend the "beef asparagus" roll. It is tempura, loaded with asparagus and bulgogi and as a lover of Korean food this roll was a no brainer for me. The roll itself is a 5 out of 5. I have been to the location in Gaines township and it is a bit more quaint and has tons of character. The décor is unique and over the top. The décor here proved to be modern and cozy, but there isn't cool art work all over the walls and in the bathroom like Jaku in Gaines.. here they have rather cool lights and a eggshell white sleek finish. Still nice and clean, though! What makes Jaku a 4 of 5 for me is that they are a bit pricey and they don't offer specials on any day of the week or during any holiday weekends. This place is amazing! Great, knowledgeable service and made us feel right at home. Started with the Nikojume appetizer (didn't get a picture because we literally inhaled it). We had the mango tango roll next which was incredible and then my husband had one of the sushi burritos and I had the chirashi bowl. So the other day, I had to head up the East Beltline for an appointment, saw JAKU, and screamed with joy! A friend whose taste I trust had been to the Caledonia location multiple times and raved about it, so I knew I had to try it, but it was just so far away. Their north location is a godsend. The tea was light and refreshing. The miso was comforting. The fish was fresh and smooth. I enjoyed both the more traditional elements (simple white tuna and tamago rolls, the edamame; have heard the katsu bento is choice!) and was delighted by their more "innovative" stuff (the mayberry roll, the sushi burrito option). Their wide selection ought to have most able to find something that delights them as well. Prices are right on the money in my opinion. There was a slight error on our first trip, in which a sushi burrito was accidentally made as a roll. This was easily fixed; they brought out the roll, apologized profusely, and brought the burrito out later, free of charge. My friend was quite pleased they were able to take home some extra food for the next day. read more

Atmosphere was cool and nice, but casual. It was pretty busy for a Thursday night and we saw lots of "to go" orders passing by. My love for Jaku is boundless. The sushi here is some of the best I've ever had. After almost weekly (sometimes twice weekly) visits to their South location, I was delighted to discover that the North location is just as good. I usually do take out, so I can't speak to the dining experience, but the takeout is always carefully prepared, packaged well and the order is always correct. Seriously not one misstep in all the times I've done take out here. I stick mostly to the sushi menu and the food is always out of this world good. My only gripe is that I wish they were open a little bit later, maybe just on the weekends. For whatever reason, the urge for sushi comes late at night, and it'd be awesome to be able to order past 10PM. read more

Finally got around to trying the second location and I'm so happy they expanded! This new location has that same hip chill vibe as the first location but with so much more space. I've went to the Jaku in Caledonia a few times and loved it however it was always such a drive for me. Now I have one right down the road from me! I ordered a couple sushi burritos for pickup and accidentally ordered from the wrong one (completely my fault) but they were so accommodating for me. They put my order as top priority and even talked to the other location for me to apologize. They had a little waiting area and gave us waters, the whole ordeal took 10mins. I recently visited their 2nd location on the E Beltline and really enjoyed it. My husband and I ordered the bulgogi bento box and a sushi burrito. Both were delicious! Our friends ordered some sushi rolls and they were also impressed by the food. Prices are reasonable, unlike some places. This location offers more seating than the Caledonia one but parking is somewhat limited since it is a shared lot with other businesses. read more

The sushi here is just okay. Better than supermarket sushi, but not great and definitely not "the best sushi in town" as advertised. (Maybe that should have been a warning sign.) The menu itself is a little lacking. About half of the rolls feature crab stick or crab salad... which is just not that great. One of the rolls we ordered was topped with crab salad; the crab stick was left in very long, unsightly strands. We ordered a variety of rolls and weren't impressed by any of them. Pretty establishment, that's as far as I can go. Sadly our food was sub par. My eel roll was watery, my ton katsu was dry and over done. My wife's tofu hibachi meh. The saving grace on this one was the sauce. And the rice was very dry. I should note my wife is of Japanese descent and cooks traditional food at home so maybe spoiled a bit there, but come on guys! The sushi at the sushi stand at river towne mall is better grade. I was looking forward to checking Jaku out as it's close to home. But it's a hard pass for me. Hands down my favorite place for sushi in the Grand Rapids area. They're edamame, hibachi, and all of the appetizers are so good.

Was really excited after viewing the menu - had all my usual suspects I look for and more. Sushi was just ok....the price is reasonable, the taste was alright...pretty good, not great. My gold standard for sushi in the GR area is Maru - this however is no comparison. Rolls were sliced into 8 really sad smallish pieces. They were not even rolled tight. Taste was better than the appearance. I'll try again for sure, but with heavily tempered expectations. read more
