1st time last night and everything was great. We did the 2 course price fix option with the charcuterie add on for the table which was excellent. I had the pork belly appetizer which was really good with the black beans My better half and I each had the scallop entree and thought it was great. We added the garlicky greens as well. Word of mouth is the best way to discover new restaurants so when we were told about James on Main, we simply had to try it. And we were nit disappointed, in fact, we were very impressed with it all. Our waiter Louis was exceptional, very attentive and knew his menu. Kevin, the Manager was equally wonderful amd make excellent wine recommendations. Now for the food... OMG it was all delicious. My wife and I wanted to check out a local brewery for our date night and thankfully we had the opportunity to order from the takeout/curbside menu from James On Main. The restaurant is so intimate we hope to come here for a sit down dinner for our next special occasion or date night. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. The chef even came out to thank us for ordering. We took a peek in the kitchen from the pick up area and it was spotless. We hurried back to the brewery to enjoy or meal with our favorite beer to pair. I got the House Ground Prime Beef Burger done medium. It was cooked to perfect. Top with smoked cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and house cut fries. It was amazing. My wife got the Wood Fires U8 Gulf Shrimp that was topped with kabocha squash & coconut velvet, forbidden rice, taro crisps. I was lucky enough to snag a bit and the shrimp was cooked heavenly. We split the pull pork tacos with vinegar slaw. They were melt in your mouth delicious! I cannot wait to experience this restaurant in the dining room! You NEED to check this place out! read more

Back in January we celebrated our youngest sons birthday dinner. The place was packed & there seemed to be people waiting at the door to get their seats. I know why this place is so popular, it's the quality of food and service which are premier! We stopped in recently for a birthday brunch and as anticipated everything was phenomenal! If you have ever experienced a great Broadway Show, or heard your favorite band play an amazing set, or your favorite sports team makes an outstanding play, you're on your feet cheering, clapping yours hands showing your appreciation, which is how we feel after enjoying a great meal and experience by Chef Bill Van Pelt & his amazing team! Anyway I would encourage anyone to make reservations well in advance for groups or if you want a real treat get a couple of seats at the chefs table/bar and take it all in. The owner is a highly talented chef at this small gem in Hackettstown. The food here is a Culinary dream! Right now they are doing a $80 per person 4 course Prix fixe. They start you with fresh bread with a delicious herb infused butter. For my first course I had the four field farm's mushroom and gruyere strudel which was AMAZING! For my second course I had the Semolina zucca pasta, smoked lamb and tomato ragout which was OUTSTANDING! The smoked lamb was packed with flavor, and it was so tender! For my third course I had the skillet roasted poussin with butternut squash risotto which was FANTASTIC! Every dish was packed with delicious flavor and so unique! Every dish blew me away! For dessert I had the apple cinnamon cheesecake which was OUTRAGEOUS! This restaurant is in a class of its own, and it's definitely a must visit! I was in Hackettstown this weekend for their Oktoberfest and was lucky enough to get to try some of James on Main's food. I've heard great things about this establishment so I'd really like to go to their restaurant because I throughly enjoyed my corn chowder :D My friends enjoyed the bratwurst on a pretzel bun which looked fantastic. Unfortunately, I did not partake because I'm GF, but was really happy to have the chef tell me that the corn chowder was GF. The chowder itself was creamy and flavorful, it didn't stand a chance! My wife and I went to Hackettstown for a Centennial Theater matinee performance on Sunday and had dinner at James On Main after that. I found the menu inventive, really interesting, and the food was really good, presented beautifully with professional, friendly service, in a very pleasant room. You can only order only a two- or three-course dinner there, which I was ready for, but I wasn't ready for its wine policy: full bottles only, no glasses. I can understand that a small restaurant doesn't want to offer a wide range of wines by the glass. But none at all? The server explained that I could order a fulll bottle and have what's left corked to talke home. But I won't pay a restaurant-rate price for a bottle of wine that I'd have mostly at home. I wound up with no wine. I'm sorry to say that this policy looked to me like the sign of a chef/owner's egotism and I thought it was profoundly customer-unfriendly. I won't go there again. read more

We came for a birthday brunch on a rainy Saturday morning. I've been here before and highly recommend it. We brought our own champagne and they provided us orange juice for mimosas. The food presentation was beautiful and everything tasted excellent. The server anticipated our needs and really went above and beyond. My only constructive comment is that the "poutine" is not poutine. It is chili fries. Although it tasted great (!) we had wanted poutine. Really love this place. I've been wanting to come here for months and finally made it for brunch! All the food was fantastic and presented beautifully! We split the bacon and the pancake which were both fantastic but the pancake is pretty heavy, the three of us couldn't finish it! The menu had great options and there's a daily specials menu too! I got the shrimp and grits which were very flavorful and a large portion and we also got the quiche on the special menu with asparagus and spring onion. Things have changed here and the focus, since Covid, has been open air dining offsite. We had a great time with friends in the midst of a beautiful farm field. The food was a little less well made as before in the restaurant but a treat anyway. read more

We tried the 7 course tasting menu. Absolutely everything they served us was good. The tuna was fresh and tasty, the prawns were good ( we both felt they were lacking in flavor, kinda bland), the charred flavors of the octopus with the creaminess of the purée was very nice, the mushroom ravioli was perfectly cooked with the butternut squash sauce... very good, the delicate and crispy pork belly was probably our favorite, the strip steak was cooked perfectly and lastly the desert plate was good but not really anything special. The staff were all very friendly and attentive as well I would absolutely recommend you give this place a try..... SO why the 4 stars??? I know there's little that a place can do about obnoxious drunk loud people near you... so I can't fault them for that but it was certainly a factor in giving us a bitter taste, considering all in for two we shelled out $330. Not the best meal when you can't speak to your wife at a normal volume. The proximity of the neighboring table was a factor as well. I think maybe we had 2 foot or less between us. I could have easily, sitting upright in my seat, slapped the dude at the next table without even fully extending my arm. I know this because I thought about how easy it would have been. Lastly the whole meal from the time we sat down to the walking out the door was just over 2.5 hours. That was by far the longest meal we have ever had, only made longer by our neighbors. Now it's important to note that we have been to elements, Nicholas and others for tasting menus.... Never this long. The cost is comparable but James on main is a much smaller dining room, much longer dinner and not exactly the at the same level as most of the other places. With all that said .... I'd still recommend them, these guys are very good chefs, the food was all good, some very good. It's worth a try and just plan on it being a long meal. read more

Being a city girl, it is so refreshing to see these little gems popping up in Hackettstown. I'm sure James On Main has been here, but I just stumbled upon it. I made a Sunday brunch reservation, after reading some reviews that recommended it. We were sat immediately and taken great care of by the attentive and friendly staff. The place itself is clean, intimate and inviting. The food is absolutely amazing. I had a little bit of of everything. The French onion soup was delicious. It had pieces of baguette bread and Swiss cheese instead of the typical mozzarella. I also ordered the French toast which was phenomenal. Also made using a baguette with lovely orange undertones of flavor. Lastly, I ordered the potatoes and pork "hash" as a side. It had so much flavor. The service team did a great job of pacing and did not rush us at all. I wish they would have been a bit more attentive, but nothing major. The hog chop was as delicious as it sounds and plenty of food; a very creative yet simple dish. I had a taste of the NY strip steak, which was excellent. The fried hot cherry peppers were ridiculously good. For dessert, you have to get the cheesecake, but the olive oil cake was also tasty.
