The bang bang shrimp and chicken had NO bang (heat/spice) - it's like there was no seasoning at all and again the consistency was mush; it wasn't inedible but it wasn't worth $20. We would have been much happier at a standard Chinese or Thai place versus Pandan despite its stellar reputation. I'm not sure what happened tonight. Maybe it's better to sit down and have super fresh plates hit the table versus a 15 minute drive, but, I'm not convinced. Service was excellent, apart from the missing appetizer which could be an accident, an $8 accident. Not the end of the world.

I've had the pleasure of dining in here many times over the past two years, and each visit has been an absolute delight. This restaurant has truly become a hidden gem for me, and I almost hesitate to share my experience because I know it's going to get even busier! The food is consistently excellent, with each dish expertly prepared and bursting with delicate flavors. The balance of texture, taste, and aroma in their dishes is truly remarkable. The portion sizes are just right, ensuring you leave satisfied but not overly stuffed. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the impeccable service. The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and taken care of, providing a 5-star dining experience every time. It's not just about the food; it's a complete dining experience. Just ate here last weekend. Really delicious. Place is small, but nicely decorated. Loved the "wood pile" wall (you'll see what I mean when you go there.) Kitchen is open, and the bar seems a great place to eat, which is unusual to me... normally don't like eating at a bar. Food was fantastic. Very tasty potato and leek soup, as well as a sausage with white beans and tomato appetizer... sausage had the right amount of kick to go with the smoothness of the beans. Then had steak frites for a main course; steak was fantastically tender, which is very rare I find... knife cut smoothly through it, and teeth hit no gristle at all. Never hurts to have a pat of butter melted on top;) Fries were crunchy and salty, but with a soft inside retained. Oh, and if you go, get the "donuts" for dessert; they are NOT a traditional donut, but instead these soft pastries filled with delicious fruit compote. Wait staff was competent, and owner came around to say hi; charming guy who stayed long enough to make an impression and show care but didn't stay TOO long (which can happen.) Went here for dinner and it was amazing. Our waitress was a sweetheart (if a little soft-spoken), and the food was leagues better than anything I'd previously expected from Hackettstown. For starters we had the soup of the day (beef bisque) and the sausage of the day. Both were good and had cool mushrooms. I had the black bass special, it came with delicious veggies and the fish itself was great. The skin was perfect! My boyfriend ordered the veal special and he was blown away. Said it was the most perfectly marbled piece of meat he'd ever had. We wrapped our meal up with the apricot donuts which were crispy, creamy, and just sweet enough to be satisfying but not overwhelming. Great first experience overall for our first farm-to-table restaurant visit. It was also really cool to be able to see parts of our food being prepared in the open kitchen. Note that if you're planning on coming for dinner reservations are a must; it's a small place with only 9 tables. read more

Definitely the best new creative food in town. My wife and I have made it a regular spot for dinner the last few weeks and I have yet to be disappointed other than the increasing difficulty in making a reservation. Although my personal favorites are the Garlicky Greens and Roasted Root vegetables I have enjoyed nearly all of the main entrees which come to the table cooked to perfection. The blackboard specials have been great and offer more variety to the regular menu. If you see the local sausage and pasta special listed on the board, I highly recommend you try it. Considering that the main theme of the restaurant is a "wood fired American menu" this pasta dish was so good it made me reminisce of the delicious homemade food in those quaint little Trattorias that my wife and I have dined at in Italy. read more

We had an exceptional experience. From our welcome this was a really special evening out. Located in Western NJ JoM has the look and feel of a West Village bistro in NY. The menu offers something for everyone and the staff is knowledgeable, and proud of the house. We thoroughly enjoyed our starters of the market salad and charcuterie. Everything fresh and brilliantly presented and prepared. Our main plates even better...we enjoyed the Shrimp and grits and a beautiful NY Strip. Both prepared perfectly! Dessert, yes we forced ourselves, was also a great treat. Homemade apricot donuts and the chocolate panna cota. We had to ask for a "to go" at this point, but just wonderful. We heard so many great things about this place. I'm just sorry that we only found out about this little diamond in the rough because it's been in Hackettstown for a year now. The ambiance at JOM is wonderful, a quaint comfortable sophisticated setting. Fabulous food. Farm to Table and it's a BYOB, you can't get better than that. Hats off to Chef Bill, and his magnificent staff. So friendly and aiming to please your every need. You must make a reservation because you cannot miss the opportunity to dine here. Our table of six was very pleased. Meticulously prepared food, excellent service, and incredible grilled octopus special. Our waiter Kevin and the rest of the staff was very attentive. Our only slight criticism is that the panna cotta was runny; maybe it was not given time to set properly. The other desserts were delicious. A truly fine meal--and we are particular! Will definitely return. Also, we appreciated the jazz music in the background played at a reasonable volume so that conversation was possible.Thank you for a wonderful dining experience. We live in Stroudsburg where there are a lot of horrible chain restaurants and very few quality privately owned places. We always prefer to drive to support a local restaurant that knows quality. I absolutely adore this restaurant. The quality of food is outstanding, the staff is courteous, I've seen other reviews and I have no idea what they're talking about in regards to staff. Go and judge for yourself-it's a farm to table approach so guess what? You have to wait a little but it's worth it for the amazing food. I go to this establishment often and have since taken several people to it as well and they all love it. Yes it's small, but I love that about it as well. It's a quaint, attentive, quality establishment....and I'm glad it's in Hackettstown. I really can't say enough good things about it. Wow! James on Main is a delicious addition to the Hackettstown restaurant scene. With 4 at table recently for dinner I was able to sample the fresh and creative chopped salad, a steamed clam app special in a rich broth; crispy breaded pork schnitzel, and flavorful grilled shrimp with grits entrees, finishing with coffee and a sweet, fluffy, delicious bread pudding. Oh. And the hand cut fries! The 4 of us left sated and happy. Ambience, decor, service were great. Our visited started with a delightful greeting from Liana, our server. We enjoyed the cheese plate first and then decided to order one of the 10 inch skillet sized pancakes for all 5 of us to share. Finally, our brunch came to the table hot and tasty; an order of Bison Chili, a Fried BBQ Chicken sandwich, Hanger Staek and Eggs, and summer vegetable quiche. We split the salad of the day, Arugula over Heirloom tomato slices and buffalo mozzarella. It was excellent although it had a little too much dressing for my personal taste. As a main course we each ordered the fish of the day, pan seared Halibut in a delicious broth with black rice. It was outstanding! Because we sat at the bar from where we could see the kitchen preparations, we saw one of the chef's, a lovely young lady, prepare freshly made apricot stuffed donuts. My wife and I were unaware of James On Main 24 hours ago, but did we ever hit the jackpot with a last minute reservation at the bar! The corn chowder soup was rich and savory, the shrimp and grits simply the best you will ever eat, and the creamy elegantly presented cheesecake a perfect end to a delectable meal. We met chef Bill, and the service was friendly and noteworthy We do not live close by, but will return, and can attest to the 'best seat' in the house. My husband ordered the New York strip and it was the best piece of beef I've had at a restaurant in a really really long time. Pleasantly surprised on our first visit to this unique restaurant! Hackettstown wasn't on our list of culinary experiences yet, but we'll be back. Everything was fresh and tasty, prices are very reasonable, and the service was stellar. There were so many intriguing items on the brunch menu we had a hard time deciding what to order. I don't know if there are words to describe how truly fantastic this restaurant is. The food is amazing! It's a field trip for your tastebuds. I love that you can see the chefs creating their masterpieces. The staff is top notch, friendly, and ready to serve up some of the most amazing and picturesque plates I've ever seen. You can tell that there is a tremendous amount of pride taken in what the chefs whip up. From plating to the different fresh tastes, this is the place to be. read more

Fantastic food, great staff, beautiful dining room. The food was excellent. I had hanger steak and eggs for brunch which was cooked to perfection. I was able to cut the steak with a fork it was so tender. Everything on the plate complimented each other and was delicious. Steak and eggs served with fresh sliced avocado, black bean and wonderful fried potatoes. It was hard to choose from the menu as everything sounded amazing. My meal from start to finish was excellent! Best steak and potatoes I've ever had! Couldn't finish that night and served it to my husband two days later. Still delicious! Had a bite of my husband's pork and only wished he had saved some for me to bring home. Perfect seasonings all around! Coming back soon with my sister who also loves a good meal. All I will say is if you don't eat Sunday Brunch here, you wasted a perfectly good Sunday. Yes it is that good. OK, I will also say PANCAKES... They do not make griddle cakes, they make Real Pancakes as is they are the size of a Fry Pan... The way they are suppose to be made, not the mass produced ones most restaurants pass off for Pancakes. read more

Do not waste your time going here ~ be warned…read more We went for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon around 1:00 pm. It was not crowded, almost empty. In the dining room, where we were seated, there was our table of two, another table of two and a table of three. The other two tables were at the end of their meals. Our server, who also greeted us at the door, was more interested in looking at his smart phone than seating us. He gave us the dinner menus, instead of lunch menus which was a sign of things to come. It was almost 1/2 hour before the server returned to take our order. At this point the two other tables of patrons were gone. We ordered a Wedge salad and French onion soup for starters. The Wedge salad was perfect, except for the large piece of Italian bread served with it which was charred, but edible out of desperation. The onion soup was TASTELESS and the cheese on the top of it was BURNT, blackened to the extent there was no mistaking whoever prepared it was not paying attention when they made it and had no problem sending it out to be served burnt. Against my better judgment, and further desperation, I ate the tasteless, burnt soup. For the main course, we had a turkey club and mussels Fra Diavolo. The "fra diavolo" sauce had no kick to it at all. They might as well have called the dish mussels in marinara sauce. The turkey club, which was ordered with no mayonnaise, had almost NO turkey on it ~ no exaggeration ~ there was only one thin slice of turkey on it! I should have sent it back immediately, but I took my first bite and then signaled for the iPhone obsessed server. I asked him for the manager and he panicked as if he did something wrong. I assured him the problem was with the food, although I should have reported him for his inability to put his iPhone down and do his job. The manager came to our table asking how she could help and I showed her the sandwich pointing to the lack of turkey. She agreed that the club sandwich was very much in need of its main ingredient -- turkey. She apologized and took my plate and said she would order me another. About 20 minutes later, our iPhone loving server returned with a new turkey club with the appropriate amount of turkey on it. We were offered no compensation for the first embarrassed turkey club which was almost sans turkey, not that we were looking for some type of compensation, but any type of gesture would have been nice. It has been years since we last ate at the Public House since moving from the area, but this will definitely be our last visit. I wouldn't recommend the place to anyone, even if the food were free. Be forewarned...you would have a more satisfying meal from a fast food restaurant!
