We've been going to Jane since it opened up. We've lived in Highland Park for quite a while now and enjoy supporting local. It had been a while since we've been. Pre-pandemic. Swooped in for a quick lunch yesterday afternoon. The food is always delicious. Never a complaint there. The hospitality or lack thereof, on the other hand, is not impressive. I understand the staff is following whatever protocols are set in place. They were as nice as could be. But to have your order shouted at you while nobody comes to check on you at your table? Even to just refresh the water? It's impersonal and I don't understand why anyone would ever want to pay for that. The biggest peeve is the "to-go" utensils and containers everything was served in. Very informal. Look, we are all trying to stay safe nowadays. But other restaurants have figured out how to use washable ceramic plates, bowls, and silverware. Nooooo! Their offerings for non egg eating vegetarians and vegans is sad and I really think this place should be called "Salt", as that's the dominant flavor. Maybe I'm writing this agro review because my blood pressure shot right up after my meal, but ordered the tofu tacos and was sad to see it smothered with soy sauce/salt laden shiitake mushrooms (a.k.a. the non-vegetarians "creative" approach to substituting meat). Did I mention shiitake mushrooms are almost as overplayed as tofu itself? I really hate shiitake mushrooms. I actually still love tofu though, because it can taste like anything, but that can also be a bad thing, as it mainly tasted like SALT at Jane. Also, they served a side of fake curtido with the tofu tacos and I was weirded out by the presence of pickled persian cucumbers--this does not make it a fusion dish, it's just con-fusion (did ya get that pun?!). My husband ordered the eggs benedict and it also tasted mainly like salt. Their breakfast potatoes were okay, but they tasted like they were brined (MORE FRIGGIN' SALT). Now that I've had my salt intake for the remainder of the year I have no idea what I'm going to do at Thanksgiving, because btw I LOVE salt, but not THIS much. Never again. read more

I visited Jane on Saturday July 27th and had an allergic reaction to the Ssam Bab dish. I am highly allergic to peanuts and have been my whole life so I know to read menu descriptions carefully. Their menu specified that they used sesame oil and soybean paste so I was ok to order it and it looked really good. I took a bite and immediately started to feel symptoms so we asked the cashier if the dish contained any peanuts. She said yes they use peanut oil but it was not indicated on the menu. I am very upset that Jane did not have any allergy information listed on the menu. It is a common practice to have allergy warnings on dishes that include soy, peanuts, or seafood since those are common allergens. If you have food allergies do not come to this restaurant as they have no warnings at their counter or on menus. read more

A sip of my friends vanilla latte (while waiting to get seated at Maximliano down the street) is what led me to Jane. I knew I had to check out this brunch spot that closes at 3pm. There has to be something special and exclusive about a place that closes right smack in the middle of the afternoon, right? We ordered the: 1. Orange french toast $11 - 3 large pieces of brioche bread dipped in creme brulee butter.... Topped with bananas, strawberries and lots of lots of cinnamon powder. The cinnamon powder was a bit overwhelming, so you can ask for less if you're not a big fan of it. 2. Soba Noodle Salad $11 - Comes with shrimp, added grilled chicken breast, with ginger peanut dressing (takes about over 10 minutes - cooking the buckwheat noodles). The noodles were chewy and tasted fresh. 3. Side of french fries $4.50 - Can't really go wrong with fries. 4. Iced Vanilla Latte - $4.50 SO Good! SO sweet. Js the way I like it :) The reason I wanted to come here. Overall, my experience here was sweet. I appreciated the generous portions. We ordered pretty standard dishes, so I cant say that the dishes were exceptional. I tried this place because I heard really great things about it.The decor is so adorable it's literally a house, looks like you're dining in someone's kitchen. The employees are extremely nice and helpful, and there are a lot of food choices to choose from. I got the breakfast quesadilla with a side of breakfast potatoes with an iced coffee, my sister ordered a breakfast sandwich , and my niece ordered buttermilk pancakes. The food took about 15 minutes and....it was okay. My quesadilla lacked flavour the salsa was very good, but the quesadilla needed salt and pepper which I did add but even after that it was still lacking flavour. The breakfast potatoes were also just okay, they also lacked salt but they were okay. The pancakes......weren't good, mushy in center they were a step below Denny's pancakes I didn't like them but my niece did enjoy them. Do not live in the area so checked restaurants near the shops we were visiting and Jane came up. The menu had a good selection for both breakfast and lunch and the house looked quite charming. We arrived right before noon, placed our order with the very pleasant gal at the register, and sat outside on the front patio. There is also plenty of seating inside and on the back patio. My friend and I both ordered omelets. I chose the Jane omelet and my friend chose the mushroom omelet. Both come with potatoes and fresh fruit. Our order was delivered to our table within a short amount of time. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST OMELETS I HAVE EVER EATEN. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and the fruit was fresh. The food is as delightful as the restaurant looks, very traditional breakfast & lunch items served with a homey goodness. I opted for a sweet dish and chose the French Toast, which came with an abundance of bananas & strawberries and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon. While the flavors were quite good, I was happy to see a plate full of French Toast and not some sad little piece of bread. For the price, it was well worth it. It's a really cute spot with lots of tables. Once you are inside, there are tons of windows so it has beautiful natural lighting. The water is self-serve inside and out. Came here with my daughter for lunch and I must say, I was pretty surprised....it looks like a house with patio seating in the front yard and additional seating on the inside. Wanted to sit outside because it had that front yard gathering feel to it, but all the seats were taken. Sitting inside was nice as well. Okay, daughter ordered the classic French toast and I got the steak sandwich. Both were awesome! A little high priced at $11 and $12, but I guess you can say it was worth it. Both were so good that my daughter who eats light ate most of her dish and 1/3 of my sandwich. French toast- 3 good sized pieces of toast covered with a generous amount of strawberries, bananas, and cinnamon.... Jane is one of those places that are pretty unassuming and not really remarkable but I don't have anything bad to say as their breakfast selection is solid, their coffee is good and the "home" style dining is cute. I had their oatmeal which had a particular flavor (probably because of the steel oats) and took a while to receive as it was freshly made. I enjoyed it and it really filled me up. Outdoor and indoor seating. The Bad: I felt like it was a little overpriced for what you get. I mean, I eat brunch often so I have a good reference point. I'm willing to pay extra for either more food or higher quality ingredients. The Food: My huevos rancheros was $11 and it didn't come with anything on the side and though it was filling as it was a stack of two tortillas with eggs and beans in between, like a tower, I still felt like $11 was a bit steep for this dish. I also bought a side of toast and bacon for my toddler and my toddler devoured it all so he gives it a two thumbs up. Conclusion: I will still come back and try some other things on the menu and update my review then. I definitely want it to succeed and I like how cute the place is. Highland Park is the next "it" place if it isn't already! When Mr.Holmes debuted their FIRST LA location here, I knew it's gonna start poppin'. I've been to Jane twice now, and both times have been for breakfast. I can vouch for their Eggs Benedict. One of the best I've had. The Classic French Toast is also delicious! The right amount of crunch to accommodate the right touch of sweetness. Both the Breakfast Quesadilla and Breakfast Sandwich with Bacon are a great alternative when you're craving a breakfast burrito and there isn't one on the menu =( They make the most perfectly cooked fluffy eggs and crunchy bacon! Their coffee roast is from Four Barrel, one of my faves! Not sure if they don't carry non-fat milk or somehow they're always out when I'm there, but in any case, almond milk has been a great substitute. The lunch items look good too. I'm dying to try the Kimchi Fried Rice with the sunny-side-up egg and Jane's Burger. Overall, they have done a great job in converting what looked like a home to a beautiful morning and midday meet-up spot (they are closed in the evenings). Keep it up Jane! read more

The kim chi fried rice was pretty basic, but that's because I live next to Koreatown. For Highland park, it's grand. I adore the space because it really feels like you're eating at someone's home. Their food is palatable to one's taste buds; it reminds you of home made breakfast. Cafe taste really good with or without out sugar/leche. The staff are amiable, competent, courteous and provides fast service. JANE's house cafe interior and exterior dining area is relatively small w/ a max capacity of ~46 people. They have a long varnished maple/oak wood center table which enables customers to converse while waiting for food. The atmosphere is good. Prices are relatively on par $$ with other similar establishments in Highland Park. As a HP resident, my verdict is I highly recommend JANE house cafe. Jane est merveilleuse! read more

This place is perfect. Hip but not hipster, busy but not crowded, high end but not expensive, good portion sizes but not excessive. Bravo! They do everything well. The only thing is I wish the staff could be identified by something- an apron? T-shirt? Headscarf? It's weird that they wear whatever they wake up in. Lol. Just kidding it's not that bad but pretty close. I guess it adds to the charm to some, but I prefer my staff to be a bit more professional. No worries they're still perfect in every other way. Once again, not only did they forget our food, but when it finally came out and our coffees were empty, they still insisted we pay their ridiculous $1 refill fee -- and yes, you read that correctly $1 exact change only, REGULAR coffee refill fee. The food is good, but it's not cheap and the single cup refill fee is excessive and grossly inconvenient. read more

Jane is another charming addition to Gentrification Row aka York Blvd in Highland Park. A cute yellow house turned restaurant -- it's a great new option for weekend brunch with your girlfriends or family, although it does get really busy and crowded during that time. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and there are tables long enough to accommodate larger groups, but it could get a little complicated if smaller parties are already seated. I sat inside the two times I've been here, but there is also a good amount of seating available outside, which is probably the better option for parties with small children and/or pets. Jane's menu offers a variety of options to satisfy both sweet and savory palettes. I always like to have a taste of both for breafast or brunch, and I'm pretty happy with everything I've tried here so far: Chorizo Huevos Rancheros, Orange French Toast, and the Kimchi Fried Rice. The Huevos Rancheros was tasty and the perfect amount of spicy. The Orange French Toast was warm, soft and fluffy, but I would recommend asking for the sauce and syrup on the side instead of on top. As for the Kimchi Fried Rice -- it was my first time ever trying any iteration of this dish, but Jane's comes with Spam...and, well, who doesn't love Spam?! All their plates are great for sharing, especially if you want a little taste of everything. And for the latte lovers out there: try the iced mocha! The only negative part of my dining experience at Jane were the big fat flies (and there were a lot of them)! This is often a deal-breaker for me when it comes to restaurants. I really hope Jane's management/staff does something about this issue because it really does take away from enjoying a great meal at a place with so much potential. read more

There were three items I ordered, knowing the pricing already because what their website menu stated. After picking up my food, I've noticed I was charge an additional $5.50. Great little breakfast/lunch addition to Highland Park with a unique and varied menu (I can also totally see this place being critiqued as gentrification... but back to the menu). We tried the kimchi fried rice, the banana pancakes, turkey melt, burger, and steak sandwich. Everyone was pleased with their meals, the portions, and the price. I feel like I got more food for less money than I would at a place like Four Cafe. The fries were super delicious, crispy, and garlicky (beware if you have meetings or romantic plans after, haha). We came in for a late lunch on a weekday and seating was ample but I predict this little gem will be a mob scene on most weekend mornings. But there is great seating out front, inside, and out back making it a quaint place to have a nice meal outdoors. I'm giving them 4 instead of 5 stars because the people at the counter weren't super knowledgeable about the menu (yes the restaurant is new but just because you haven't tried something doesn't mean you can't make recommendations along the lines of the steak sandwich is super popular! People love the huevos rancheros!). Also the person at the counter seemed mildly annoyed she had to take out order. Finally, they were out of lemonade. The place was definitely busy (granted, it was a Sunday morning), but we were lucky enough to grab a table on the porch looking out onto the rain that had rendered the patio tables unusable.
