After visiting Japan 2 years ago, we fell in love with authentic Japanese Curry. If you haven't had Japanese curry, I would highly recommend you try it, it is nothing like Indian curry. The base is completely different. The curry is very thick and almost like gravy. It is very much so a comfort food. Let's get done to the dishes. We had the standard chicken katsu curry spice level 5. It had a little kick I would say a medium spice level. The curry is amazing! Just like having it in Japan! So delicious and authentic! I ordered the shrimp tempura and spam curry. It was breaded and fried to perfection, the spice level was a 7 and it had a decent kick I definitely could have done a 10, but I love spicy! We ordered the curry udon to go, and I am excited to try it later today. Yes we ordered to go because it's that good! The staff is friendly and very attentive. Our drinks and food were brought out promptly. Highly recommend! I don't often post but I truly felt like this place needed a shoutout. Coming here is always nostalgic for me. I remember when this was their only location and it would be packed no matter what time of day. Glad to say the flavors still haven't changed. Hands down the best Japanese Curry place in all of Vegas. Price is not crazy, portion sizes are great. Been coming here for over 10 years, surprised I haven't written something for them. During my most recent visit, the service was great and the staff were very attentive. The 3 stars mainly is for the flavor of the food. I ordered the pork katsu, spicy level 3, with white rice and corn. They were generous with the rice, corn, and curry portion, however the pork cutlet felt very small and disproportionate to the rest of the meal. The flavor of the pork was pretty bland and the meat itself was more dry than usual. Throughout the meal I kept thinking "this needs more salt". I've recently discovered this place because this is my boyfriend's favorite place to eat. Every time I've come, it's always been a pleasure! Service is polite, fast, and quick. The serving size is more than enough for me; I always have to pack half of it home. The texture of the katsu is wonderful: crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. I added vegetables + corn + cheese in order to add variety and flavor to my plate. I also ordered above their level 10 spicy, which you can apparently do! I did level 20, which felt like a gamble... but I luckily handled it pretty well. It was the perfect amount of spicy that I could enjoy, yet still feel a sting the more I ate. I wouldn't go any higher. But even without the added toppings and spicy, the quality of the food is solid! Overall, I always enjoy eating here. Came here because the wait was too long for another place in the area - glad I did! :) We were seated right away but the service was a bit slow (slow to take our orders, slow to deliver drinks, slow to deliver food). We all ordered a curry plate. You get to choose the plate size, the side (e.g. white rice, brown rice, etc.), the curry spice level, toppings (e.g. cheese), and protein. I got my curry at a level 7 and it had a really nice kick. My friend who ordered a level 3 tried mine and said it was really spicy haha. Overall, we all enjoyed our meals. As much as I love how Yelp has helped me to discover so many eateries around the Bay Area and beyond, it feels a bit more special when I end up discovering awesome places like how I used to - by randomly stumbling across them, often while waiting in line for some other spot. Which, in this case, happened years and years ago as we eagerly awaited our group to be called for a table at Monta Ramen. Yes, there was some blind luck involved (a place with so many reviews, even back then, that never popped up on my Yelp radar ended up being just 50 feet away), but it was definitely a sign, too. A sign that we should've come here instead! I mean, you can't argue with zero wait and tastier food! Although Japanese Curry Zen may not be as unique or trendy as some of the other places I have bookmarked to try in Vegas, I was more than happy to make the trip back out here from The Strip. For one, I absolutely LOVE Japanese curry. Secondly, the photos of their food, as simple as it may be, looked far too good not to try. The menu is pretty straightforward - they have about a dozen appetizers, a handful of sides (though, I'm not sure how a bowl of Curry Udon or Katsu Don are considered "sides"), and a number of ways to customize your curry rice plate. Along with the portion size, you can also choose how spicy you want it to be, as well the toppings, which range from the usual suspects (Beef, Chicken Katsu, Tonkatsu, etc.) to less commonly seen choices (Fried Tofu, Kushi, Chicken Tenders, etc.). -- TAKOYAKI - Fried Octopus Balls Ehh...this was fine. Each piece was decently crispy and I liked that there was a fair amount of mayo and takoyaki sauce. However, as cute as it was, the fact that this fit on such a small serving dish made the overall portion size seem just as small. -- CURRY RICE PLATE (Regular Size) with CHICKEN KATSU and FRIED EGG I'm not sure I'd say that this was the best Japanese curry I've had, but it's up there. The curry was really flavorful with a nice spice to it (though, not heat, as this was only Level 3) and the Chicken Katsu was spot on (crispy on the outside, moist on the inside). I just wish the Fried Egg was runny instead of fully cooked. -- CURRY RICE PLATE (Regular Size) with TONKATSU and VEGETABLES Not quite as impressive, but still pretty good. I don't know if it's because it was only Level 2 (standard) or if the vegetables diluted it, but the curry didn't seem to have the same punch to it. That said, I was surprised that I actually liked the Tonkatsu more than the Chicken Katsu (I generally prefer the latter). Beyond the food, the service and ambiance here is great. The workers warmly greeted us when we walked in and were super friendly every time we talked to them. Plus, despite how seemingly popular this place is, it never got all that busy, even on a Saturday night, so the vibe felt relaxed the entire time. Even with so many more restaurants and eateries on my list of places to try in Vegas, I'd happily make the trip out here again to get more of Japanese Curry Zen's food! read more

Listen up, here's what I think is the perfect order: medium size curry with white rice, add chicken tenders, add croquette, ask for the free pickled garnish. I got the chicken katsu which was very tasty, but my buddy got the chicken tenders and it looked like a full butterflied breast, super thin and crispy. But honestly, you can't really go wrong. My friend was craving Japanese curry and we decided to go here. Usually this place gets pretty busy but we were able to walk right in on a Thursday evening. I got the Japanese curry rice with pork cutlet and my friend got the omurice with chicken cutlet. The chicken cutlet was better than the pork cutlet in terms of juiciness and that is the more popular option. I got regular spicy (no levels) and there was still a small spicy kick so there's not really much need to get more spicy than that. My friend got the level 10 and it was just a bit more spicy than the regular so the extra surcharge in my opinion is not really worth it. The Japanese curry is quite flavorful but the prices are pretty high and on par with eating at the strip, so it is a bit pricey for being off the strip. read more

When ordering, you have the option to choose what portion size you want for your curry. I've tried both the regular & large portion. I will definitely say that they're quite generous in terms of portion. Honestly, a regular size is way more than enough for me, but I love their curry, so I wouldn't mind getting a large portion again. The large portion was only $3 more than the regular & it comes with extra rice + curry. That's a win-win to me, lol. I would recommend ordering the large portion if you plan to share or you could take it home & have it for dinner. I also decided to add deep fried shrimp & corn to my curry. I expected them to give me the corn on the side, but they added it to my curry instead. To my surprise, the curry flavor mixed with the corn tasted like I was eating corn nuts, lol. I was taken aback that they charged extra for a higher level spice; it should honestly be included in the base price of the curry in my opinion. We got a small curry with white rice ($8.50) since we didn't want a lot of rice. However, there wasn't enough curry so we had to order extra side of curry ($3). Although the portion was small, the curry was delicious. Note: They charged us $0.20 twice for spicy level 4 for the small order & extra side order of curry. My husband added scrambled egg ($2) and sweet honey ($1.50) as the toppings (not needed from my perspective). For the protein, we got the 5 piece kushi ($7) since we were sharing. The kushi included chicken, zucchini, quail egg, shiitake mushroom, & fried shrimp. They were all equally good. We also got 5 pieces of takoyaki ($5.75) and 6 pieces of deep friend pork & shrimp shumai ($5). These appetizers were fresh & tasted better than the kushi. great spot i got to try while in vegas. the server was helpful in telling me what kind of spice the curry sauce used. i got level 10 and i was fine with it. the takoyaki was good not too hot. the chicken karaage was a lil on the drier side but the sauce helped. the restaurant is a bit on the smaller side but they were able to break up out big party into smaller tables that were near each other. overall, great local spot for curry. read more

The only thing I would say is for those who cannot handle spicy food, level 1 is pretty spicy as it built up for me. The other items looked really good as well! One thing that I was not expecting, was that I was charged for the vegetables, meaning it was not a straight substitute for not getting the rice, nor was I informed of this when I initially inquired about the substitution. The service was fast, and our orders came out within 10 minutes. The rice was perfectly cooked and had the correct stickiness. The curry was so flavorful and the spice was just enough. The pork Katsu was tender, juicy, and well breaded. One small downside is the price. With the curry customizations, you can easily rack up the price. $16 for basic curry with no toppings and a standard size pork katsu filet is pretty expensive. However, it is worth the price. It is the best Japanese curry of my life (granted, I haven't had one in Japan but I've visited multiple restaurants in SF and LA). I spread the gospel whenever someone is accompanying me.
