Cafe by the beach? Sure…read more OCB is a popular local coastal beach cafe at Ocean Beach, San Francisco. They offer a wide variety of drinks, pastries and breakfast. Indoor and outdoor atmosphere was very North Cal, chill, relaxed and hip. I came mid-morning to grab a hot Jasmine Green Tea. And it was okay. Service was spot on. Staff were attentive and professional. Parking is atrocious but there is a public parking lot right by the beach. Prices are fair. Overall, it's a nice coffee shop a block fr the beach. I recommend you visit.

The sandwich was very filling too, so I ended up only eating half of it. I'd recommend this place! I like how stuffed they make their sandwiches, but I've only tried one sandwich from them so far so I'll need to try more later.

While I was waiting for my coffee, a pizza passed by with an incredible aroma. It looked so good that I immediately started looking through the menu. To my surprise, I found many of my favorite dishes on it. As a European, I couldn't help but comment on how much I liked the menu and the overall feel of the place. The food selection, presentation, and attention to detail reminded me of the cafés I enjoy back in Europe. The young woman who served my cappuccino welcomed me with a warm smile and was genuinely friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. I came in for a coffee and left excited to return. I'll definitely be back soon to explore the menu and try more of their dishes.

Java Beach brings a cool little vibe to the Ocean Beach Sunset area. Its located right on the corner at the end of the N line. Occasionally you can get in here and there are just a few people and plenty of prime seating. But most of the time the place is packed, which is good. They have a decent sized patio to sit on if you dare, considering it usually doesn't peak 68 degrees down here. The inside has a cute little bar top you can sit at in front of their 6 or so beers on tap. Also some couch room and table and chairs. On the weekends you can usually find some kind of live music which is cool and fun. Oh did i mention FREE WIFI?? That fact alone may add an hour to my stay there. Very friendly staff, not so quick of service. But thats what you get when the food is very fresh. They have soup, sandwiches, salads, breakfast items, and assorted baked goods, and lots of good coffee. Because a lot of tourist roll through here it can get a little cluttered and dirty. People don't understand the concept of cleaning up after themselves. All around a cool quaint quirky little place in the Sunset. It is especially nice later on because its mostly locals hanging out down there. They are open from 5am-11pm everyday i think. read more

This neighborhood place is amazing with a wonderful and, at the same time, funky vibe. It is owned by people who grew up in the Outer Sunset, back when it was the Lower Sunset. These people are not here posing like their too cool for school like some other businesses around the `hood. Instead, they have quietly changed the neighborhood while welcoming everyone into their cafe. They built the park across the street-- transforming it from an abandoned vacant lot to an awesome oasis. The service is efficient, friendly and caring. They care. They really care. I know the staff and the recent characterizations given on Yelp are far from true. They do get busy, but they move the line FAST and everyone get their fix in a timely manner. The sandwiches are huge and delicious. If you order a hot sub, it is cooked so that takes time, but I've never waited too long. Salads are huge and plentiful. And then to the basics: the coffee is scrumptious. 6 different, stellar options-- where do you see that? Go to Java Beach and be part of something bigger-- Java Beach is changing the neighborhood for the better one cup of coffee at a time. read more

Java Beach is my home away from home and the people who work there are the best! I see that the recent yelps took place during the hot spell when everyone and their mother was here at Ocean Beach. I must say the staff handles the increased traffic with grace. Have any of you ever worked in the service industry?? This is not McDonald's folks-- is that what you want out here on the edge of the Pacific Ocean? I think not. That wouldn't fit, would it? I haven't even been to McDonald's in years, but I imagine you want robots serving you and not people. People who really appear to be trying their best. Then, again, you could go to Java Beach on a cold, foggy day and enjoy the breadth of experience: the warm, welcoming smiles with a hot chocolate with fresh made whipped cream. Decent coffee, excellent location. The crowd seems to really take away from the experience however. Is Java Beach a homeless shelter? There are a lot of bums that hang out here. Many live in Golden Gate Park, on the beach or in their campers. They come here and sit all day stinking up the place. Then you have the surfer punks with their attitude and of course the bitter grumpy old lesbians writing their books and bad poetry that snarl at you. Coffee shops are supposed to smell nice. Especially since they serve warm sandwiches and pastry. There are times I've gone inside and it's smelled worse than a men's locker room, London subway bathroom or the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Java Beach seems to do well with clean customers so they need to thrown the bums out that sit around stinking up the place. There sandwiches are good. read more

I absolutely love Java Beach so much. Not only are their vanilla lattes a small taste of heaven but their food is really good. My favorite salad is the Ceasar Salad but do realize it comes with mushrooms. It's a fun spin on a classic but I get mine without them. Their teas are also really good. My favorite time to go there is in the evenings to relax with friends. I also prefer evenings because the staff is amazing then. Debbie (the night manager) is so sweet and makes a point of remembering your name and your usual drink. There's nothing better to me when I walk into a business than for the employee to say, "Hey Nicole. Are you getting your usual?" But don't get me wrong, mornings there are always good too. When Sean is making my coffee, he always remembers that I prefer my vanilla lattes sweet. I highly recommend this place!! read more

I spend a LOT of time here. The building alone has made a great improvement in the neighborhood - from an area of blight and nothingness to a more lively and lovely place. I love the aesthetics, particularly at night - and the outdoor seating is a nice touch. My favorite thing in the whole world to get from here is an oatcake. Though sometimes even the cashier may not know what it is - it is hiding on the bottom shelf behind the newspapers. It is really like portable oatmeal, slightly sweet with dried fruit. Their coffee is pretty good, and their sandwiches and salads are super yummy -- they also accept cards for even the smallest of purchases. You should probably come here since it's basically awesome. But then I'm biased because I grew up on Java Beach on LaPlaya. I'm just stoked to have one on my side of town. read more

This place is a RIP OFF. Asian lady who owns business charges full price for a refill. Two medium coffees for 8.00. A greedy local business & everyone talks about what a angry and greedy person she is. Also, if you tip generously, this won't help for even a warm up to your coffee. The owner will openly yell at you & embarrass you in front of customers. I was spending about 250.00 per month here. I was dissuaded about the rip off tactics on refills that I bought a coffee maker on Amazon & buy coffee at Trader Joe's. I cut my coffee bill to 65.00 per month. The owner has no patience. She swipes your credit card and throws it on the counter. Make sure you grab your card. I left mine behind and came back 30 minutes later. She said she threw it away. I had to wait 10 days for a replacement in the mail. read more

I've been a Java Beach faithful for years. The place has aged like a fine wine, getting better all the time. Yes, there is a line, but have you noticed how fast it moves? They have two people working two registers QUICK style. The coffee is superb...all fair trade and organic...Bernie's Blend will rev you up fast and not abandon you. Delicious pastries. Killer bagels with heaps of cream cheese. The subs are phenomenal (try a Tsunami!). FREE Wi-Fi!! There are 5 beers on tap with Happy Hour DAILY. DAILY, including weekends! They're OPEN until 11pm. And the people are the most eclectic gathering of people in town. College students, mothers, bikers, construction workers, writers, musicians, poets AND locals!! This is no ordinary cafe and it would be nothing but a mistake to draw that conclusion. read more

Oh Java Beach, you make my lunch so often I now have a pavlovian response to the glory that is the hot veggie sandwich (ask for the whole grain bread). My nearby art studio and the creative expressions it contains are forever linked to the satisfaction of a hot veggie sandwich and a no sweet soy chai. So many great ideas have been fostered through this combination, I can now call upon it when needed to pull me out of a creative block. Rainy blustery or sunny beachy, I eat lunch here at least once a week and it's often my only meal of the day. I hope the staff know that my work is surely only a tiny fraction of the Sunset creatives that are fueled by the western exposure and savory snacks at Java Beach. read more

This place is the best ! I've been drinking java beach coffee for well over a decade now. I lived in Italy for 3 years and loved the cafe culture. Java Beach has the same atmosphere. At any time of the day I can expect to see one of my friends and meet new people too. I've seen many relationships start here,This is where I meet my wife. It's the only place of it's kind apart from the new java beach which is now my second favorite hang out joint in the city. The food in these places is outstanding and the variety lacks nothing. This spot was right next to our Airbnb , we decided to come grab some breakfast before we head out. You wait outside and stand 6 ft and then go on and order your food and they call out your name in another window once your food is ready! I ordered the turmeric tea latte and a bagel with cream cheese and sun dried tomatoes . My bagel was kinda hard and it wasn't warm so I wasn't too happy with my bagel , my latte was good. My husband got the yoghurt bowl which he loved and my friends for the veggie bagel . Everyone enjoyed there food! Java Beach Cafe was the perfect stop before leaving San Francisco! Tucked conveniently close to the Great Highway, it's a fantastic spot to grab a bite and soak in the coastal vibe. I opted for the veggie bagel and wasn't disappointed. It was fresh, delicious, and hit the spot. I have lived down the block from this place for years. The sandwiches are good, actually, when I was pregnant I was addicted to the Whirling Dervish sandwich which is feta cheese, tomato, greens and balsamic vinegar & oil. They also have really good soups, especially the chicken curry soup they frequently have. For selfish reasons, being in grad school, I sometimes wish the live music was not so loud on week nights but I also appreciate the community space. The menu gets pretty boring but, again, I have been coming here for many years. Overall, a great friendly neighborhood staff and delicious food. read more

I will never come back here again. Refills are full price and me and my husband spent 16.00 on 4 cups of coffee here in 25 minutes. Similar to comments below, who charges full price for refills? The coffee was very average and over roasted in my view. Asian lady behind the counter is very abrupt and frankly, she wasn't as nice as she could of been. Outside was filled with homeless people smoking pot and asking for money. This neighborhood is the end of the line for the Judah and all the city homeless stop here to get off the train and hang around and deal drugs at the 7 Eleven down the street. read more

I really love this little place. You come in from the beach all cold and you get a nice, warm cup of coffee or a plate of food and you feel really cozy! It's nice to sit outside on a nice day in the front outdoor seating and watch the sun going down. The coffee is pretty good, but really it's the whole vibe of the place that is so relaxing and nice. On Sunday mornings, I love to get some coffee here and read the newspaper. It's a great place to unwind. Overall, I think this is one of my favorite little spots in the outter avenues. I came out here while waiting for my dog to be treated at Sunset Veterinary Hospital. So I walked down the Great Highway to Judah Ave where the J Judah streetcars turnaround at the beach, The café was very inviting which music and the aroma of coffee. I ordered my latte from a nice barista and waited only a few minutes for it. This place is kinda small and it was relatively crowded with people just having coffee or meals, A very chill atmosphere here, I did not order anything to eat. Nice place though. Location? Superb. Outdoor seating? Marvelous. Prices? Astronomical. Service? Usually abhorrent. Crowded all the frickin time by upper-crust Ocean Beach bums. And pricks. Lots of pricks. Except at night. At night, it's one of the best places in town to sip a Guinness and shoot the shit. All the jerks are gone, and the coffee-slingers with that "I'VE BEEN UP SINCE 4 A.M." attitude are in bed. You get a 10 cent discount when you bring your travel mug... but then they give you a receipt, always, every time, even when you try to say NOTHANKS. Way to be, hippie. read more

If you don't mind crowds this is a place you don't want to miss. Convenient for a MUNI passenger at the end of the N Judah line you can have a good selection of good (strong) coffees, tasty pastries or sumptuous sandwiches. Take some time if you can find a place to sit and enjoy the parade of locals and tourists. Mostly a younger crowd they bring the charm and energy to the place. The baristas are quick, cordial and accurate. When you feel it 's time to move on, step outside and walk across to the beach. Good way to start or end a day. read more

Well, it's one of those "good and bad": things. The bad (1 star) would be the unpleasant counter service, apparently now gaining some notoriety for the place...not sure what's going on there. The good (5 star) is the ass kicking coffee. Several flavors of heavy, heavy coffee from all over the world. If you're out by the beach, and you need a cup of the real stuff, this is the place to go. Incredible food options, best coffee around, right by the beach... dirty surfer men, happy little joggers. you really can't ask for something more special! Prices are a bit high, though. You've got thick-cut turkey, crispy bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, all stacked between toasted bread. Good balance across the board. Nothing is overpowering, everything plays its role. The avocado adds some creaminess, bacon brings the salt and crunch, and the turkey is sliced thick enough to actually feel like something. Bread is nicely toasted. Holds everything together without getting in the way, which is key for a sandwich like this. It's not trying to reinvent anything, just a well-executed classic. This spot has a real neighborhood vibe, in a good way. Plenty of patio seating and dog friendly. Steps away from one of the city's best oceanside walks. Not bad, right? Would run this back for a quick lunch if I'm in the area, but really hard to compete w the other incredible sandwich options in SF, so wouldn't go out of my way to come back. Inside, the decor and vibe of this place looks so much like their original spot on Judah - wood-laden interior with some counter seats and dated posters and decorations that give it a warm and cozy vibe. Plus, it's awesome how they have a fair amount of seating inside and about a half dozen patio tables outside, which is perfect for those sunny and breezy days out here by the beach. Similarly, the menu here is nearly identical, with the same collection of espressos, coffees, teas, pastries, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, and beers, but with the addition of soft serve, shakes, and floats, which I don't recall seeing at their spot on Judah/La Playa. -- TSUNAMI HOT SUB with Ham, Salami, Mortadella, Choice of Cheese (Swiss), Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Mayo, Mustard, and Special Sauce on Choice of Roll (French Roll)...$18.75 Not quite as good as how I remember it, but still pretty solid. The mix of meats was still just as delicious and they didn't skimp on the portion nor their "special sauce" (Italian dressing?). That said, I didn't like this French roll as much, as it was a lot thicker and harder. -- ARNOLD PALMER...$7.25 (16oz) I liked this so much at their original location, I couldn't resist getting it here and, thankfully, it was just as good. Not only was there an even ratio of iced tea to lemonade, but the taste of this was so well balanced - not overly sweet nor tart or bitter. As far as service goes, just like at their sister location, all of the workers here are so nice and friendly. They warmly greeted everyone that came in and got our orders out relatively fast. What's more, the vibes here feel a bit more chill and relaxed by comparison. Maybe it's because you don't have the N-Judah line right outside, but it seemed a bit more peaceful with a nice mix of customers - from folks quietly working and reading to families stopping in for a bite on their way to/from the zoo. Overall, as much as I enjoyed my visit to this Java Beach, I feel like I'd be remiss not to acknowledge that the prices here do trend higher than what you might expect to find elsewhere. Nothing egregious or anything, but I can't say I expected my lunch was going to cost $26 (before tip) either. Given that, despite how much I genuinely like Java Beach, I'd probably be more inclined to come back when I'm looking to post up to do some work rather than strictly just to get a bite. Unless it's to check out their soft serve floats, shakes, or one of their specialty coffees, which all looked so interesting! All in all, THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down for now.

It's become a reliable go-to when I need a quality cup of coffee first thing in the morning. I've tried their dirty chai latte, vanilla latte, and regular house coffee and everything has been consistently good and served quickly. A huge plus is that they roast their coffee next door, so everything tastes fresh and locally crafted. I haven't explored much of the food menu yet, but I did try one of the prepackaged burritos that they heat up from the grab-and-go case, and it was a surprisingly great find very flavorful and satisfying. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos, but I do recommend look forward to returning! Friendly service, fresh coffee, large indoor and outdoor space with plenty of seating options and convenient early hours make this a neighborhood staple worth checking out.

Is this a hot coffee thrown into a clear plastic cup. Nerves aside, their cold brew comes with frozen coffee ice cubes (what geniuses are working in the disguised as baristas).
