The worst experience in quite a long time! Save yourself the abuse and go anywhere else. How this place got voted "Best Bagels" in Daily Record is beyond me! Readers must be blind and deaf! Owners (I believe) talking about patrons in filthy derogatory words while cursing, rudely advising customers to mind their business while toasted bagels get cold awaiting spread, having help advise customers to "help themselves to cups to get iced tea" while there is no iced tea! Then having other staff verbally berate customer because cup was thrown away with the comment "put the cup back in stack" even tho sweet n low added in hopes of getting iced tea? More rude, unprofessional and derogatory words uttered following. Do not go unless you'd like a fight. Too bad bagels are tasty but I will never taste them again! OMG. If you want a fresh delicious large bagel or are looking for a good variety of bagels this is the place you want to go! Everything is baked on site and is wonderful. So, yes. I can now add this morning to one of my sundry "Seinfeld moments" a la 'soup nazi'. I have had better bagels (alfa bagels in randoph for one), but Java Joe's is only 3 blocks from my home. I've been coming here since we moved to Ledgewood 14 years ago. It's convenient and my family had been coming here about every other weekend morning. My boys even enjoy the short trip, because they like to pick their own. And I always make sure to tip (even though I have to pick bagels myself. In essence, it's a 20% tax to help out the owner's kids who work there.) Their bagels are generally the way I like them: soft and chewy. Lately, however, they've been making them look like bagel "buns". There's no hole in the middle! I suppose the place has a new bagel maker. But, I digress. Back to this morning. my wife sends me out for a few bagels to feed our boys before their soccer tournament. I stop in with the intention of getting the sesame ones. there are only about 6 left in the bin. They look pale and flat. not the way I like them. I notice that new sesame bagels on the trays are waiting to be placed in the bin. What would you do? That's right. Wait for the fresh ones. I wait. and wait. and wait. Finally, I ask the employee for some "fresh" bagels from the tray. The owner (who is at the cashier's spot) overhears me and asks: "What did you want?" I explain that I just asked for some fresh bagels, because the one's in the bin don't look as good. (after all, it's a pick your own bagel joint) She barks back: "ALL OUR BAGELS ARE FRESH! That's not something you should say so early in the morning. ALL OUR BAGELS ARe FRESH!" At this point, i'm a little taken aback and the other dozen or so (baker's dozen?) customers look at her and me. then she continues: "If you want HOT, then say 'HOT'! But don't say 'FRESH'! I reply, "Well, how about 'fresher'? Does that work?" I'm thinking this is semantics right? She stares at me and goes back to her checkout counter. Once i get to the counter to pay, she takes a stiff walk over to her employee and mumbles something. Of course, she is directing him not to hand out 'FRESH' or 'HOT' bagels to customers. When she comes back I say, "I didn't mean to offend you." She purses her lips and looks down and shakes her head. "Well, yeah. All our bagels are FRESH! Some places rebake their bagels! We don't rebake!" Who knew? I was so wrong. Sigh. After 14 years, time to move on. :) read more

I was in the area this morning and decided to get a regular Jersey bagel Taylor ham egg and cheese, man was I surprised... The set up is just not efficient for what people want. You have an "order" side and a "payment" side, but people just order then take two steps to the payment side... The bagels are cool in variety, but I don't see much of a turn around in fresh bagels versus those that have been out for a while - wouldn't call them fresh by any standpoint. I took a plunge and grabbed an Asiago bagel to change it up, was not impressed by the flavor and the Taylor ham couldn't used more time. All in all it's hard to mess up bagels, and this place is a borderline passing grade. read more

The bagels could not be fresher, coffee is always hot, specials are great, all products are of the best quality, How hard is it for people to pick their own bagel (so many to choose from, take it to the counter and then pay for you order. Some of these people act like then never went to a restaurant before. By the way signs are posted as to where to get the bagels, where to place orders and where to pay. Very simple. The employees work so hard and try their best but you can't please people with the preverbial chip on their shoulder. There are at least four, if not five bagel shops I could go to but Java Joes is the best. Solid variety of flavors and great quality. The even make great lunch sandwiches. The only negative doesn't involve the food or the staff, but the order/pay process. I've been going here for awhile and can mostly navigate it, but if there are a ton of people in there (like probably when you want to be there) it becomes a complete mess. read more

Absolutely the best bagels in the area! Self-select what you buy, or order several dozen ahead. The bagels are worthy of 4 stars, ambiance a 2 star. It's a counter order shop with self serve features. You can order sandwiches etc to be made while you wait. Coffee is average. They have a handful of tables to sit and eat. Staff can be a little abrupt. Reminds me if a certain Seinfeld episode. You kind of have to understand how the process works: select bagels, wait in long line to pay. Want it toasted w spread, select bagel go to service counter, hand over bagel and wait in long line to pay while they are prepping your order. read more

Ok when someone talks about a NY/NJ bagel this isn't what they mean. These are basically rolls with holes in the middle. The bagels aren't boiled and are very mealy and just not what you want in a bagel. The soup on the other hand is very good and the people that work there are so nice. So don't go for the bagel cause it's not what you want from one in this area but try the other stuff. read more

Terrible establishment. Called an hour before closing (which is at 3pm) to order food, and arrived at 2:20 to pick it up. Evidently they had closed early and I, along with a few other customers, were unable to pick up our food, even though they had accepted the order over the phone. Very disappointed. read more

I have been going to Java Joe's for about 2 years now and love it! The bagels are great. You have lots of varieties to choose from. They also make lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, cakes, cupcakes, and soooo much more! They have 4 varieties of coffee to choose from and it's always consistent in taste! There service is always friendly and pretty quick even on busy days. I highly recommend them. It's a local favorite! read more

If you like waiting 30 min for a subpar bagel this is your place. Be prepared to wait online just to order for about 15 min. That's with you doing 1/3 of the girls job by bringing the bagel to them. All that's left for her is to write your order and cut the bagel. Massive tasks as the long line dictates. Then be prepared to be lost cause there's no rhyme or reason to the payment method or where to wait. They'll ask you if you "cashed out" because again there is no system and they have no idea what's going on. And finally now that you've waited 30 min for your order, you open the wrapping and are delightfully disappointed. Who makes a bagel with no Accoutrements on the bottom of the bagel? What a sin! Forget about being close to a NY bagel, I can get this same bagel at dunkin and I've waited 30 min for this! Stay as far away as possible. And forget about a smile they don't serve those especially after you wasted half an hour for shit. read more

Java Joe's Bagels are the best in the state. The variety is absolutely mouthwatering and their latest Cranberry Bagel is a hit in our family. The bagels are outstanding with cream cheese and since they are so soft in the center they make great sandwiches. read more

Lost my business forever. I used to go here regularly for the past 10 years, stuck with them through change in ownership and everything. Customer service is everything and they absolutely ruined it for me. Called in on a Saturday to place an order for pick up over the phone which I have always done on a weekly basis, only to be told by the very rude man that answered the phone"NO, We're too busy. You have to come in" he then proceeded to hang up on me. I called ahead because I was about to place a large order which you would think they would appreciate in order to give them time to prepare but I guess not. I called Roxbury Bagels instead and they gladly took my order over the phone no problem. Roxbury Bagels now has gained my business as well as my families and friends as I've told them all about my experience. Don't forget that in a small community it's members of the communities that keep local businesses afloat. You should be more cognizant of that next time you want to treat them like crap. read more

The bagels are the best that I have ever eaten, including bagels in NY! The coffee is good but there could be more selection. The counter people are pleasant and helpful every time that I have gone there (about 10 times) even though they are very busy. The owner is a very pleasant lady who is constantly trying to make her business better and more enjoyable to visit. read more

This place has great bagels but the staff is awful. I have been in here and all of the teenagers behind the counter are totally screwing around and no one helps you. Additionally, I have been in there several times and the owner (I beleive it's the owner anyhow) is as immature as the teenagers and doesn't offer any help. The only reason that I have occasionally gone back is the bagels themselves, the people who work there really infuriate mewith there incompetance. I was kind of weary going here at first because of some of the negative reviews and overall rating of 3/5 stars, but let me tell you I was thoroughly impressed with this place. Ordered a Taylor ham, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel and it was delicious. The bagel was nice and fluffy on the inside but the outside had a crunchiness to it which I liked. The cheese was melted which is key on any breakfast sandwich and had just the right amount of Taylor ham. I've seen negative reviews about the bagels being out in the open and how you have to hand them over the counter. Simple solution people, try grabbing a bagel from the back of the rack this way you can be assured that not many, if any, people touched your bagel or coughed/sneezed on it etc. Then all you do is grab the bagel, walk over to whoever is behind the counter and hand her your bagel. Not rocket science people. The girl I handed my bagel to was friendly and polite and had rubber gloves on so I had no problem with this operation. Overall good experience and I will return as I work up in the area. read more

Wow nothing like having them mess your order up and have you pay for their mistake. Especially after the owner comes over, and still makes you pay for their mistake. And I could've just walked out and left them holding that sandwiching their hand. But I'm the better person. Unfortunately, they choose a specific grade of Taylor ham that happens to be the lowest grade that you can order. Charging me for their extra low-quality meat on the sandwich that I don't want extra meat on, because I didn't specify not to put extra meat on my sandwich when removing the egg from their special. It's just ridiculous. This will be my last time eating their low quality taylor ham. It's unfortunate because they use a large amount of seeds on their bagel, and I really do enjoy that. But just a total lack of customer service, yet again. Not that long ago my sandwich completely wrong, and i just threw it in the garbage. When I went in the next day, I let the owners wife know that instead of having well done Taylor ham I had practically raw Taylor ham. And I asked for no salt pepper and no ketchup and there was salt pepper and ketchup on it. She agreed with me that when somebody doesn't want ketchup on your sandwich it completely destroys the sandwich and it's worthless. However she didn't ask to compensate me in anyway shape or form didn't even reduce the price of the new sandwich that I was buying. Not a shock that her husband has the same customer service skills. I work next-door to this place so it's very convenient being that it's so close to my job. I've been going to this place since September of last year usually two times a week. We ordered from this bagel shop fairly regularly from our place of business, for lunch. The food is ok, the location convenient, but when we put together a large order, it's generally screwed up. No big deal, but the owner gets nasty when we ask for what we actually ordered and paid for. Service is terrible. When one of the girls pointed out that her brownie was hard as a rock, the reply was " well, sometimes that happens." Not a friendly place. It might be that the bulk of the business depends on selling bagels to restaurants and they're not concerned with the retail side of the business. read more

1st off I want to say I think their bagels and sandwiches are good. It's the service that stopped me from going. After standing in half ass unorganized lines a few times, for sometimes up to 30 mins, I got their phone number so I can call 20 mins away, and have my order waiting, which is the whole point. This was fine the 1st few times, though it was on slower days. The last 2 times, was a headache. They have no line for called in orders, so even if you call in there's still a line just to talk to someone. You'd think there would be like a movie theater line, like a line they have for people with tix, to move quick. The "last" time I went I called, she said 15 mins, I got there in 15, waited 5 mins in line, told my order, paid. Then waited patiently for my order, which you would think would be waiting for me, or I'd get a "it's almost done", but no, they asked me "what did I order?" 2 times, then after waiting 15 more mins, they started to make the order. As the head lady told me to move aside to the back of the store, I guess I was in the way of people who just got there and were already getting their stuff made. This place is a joke if you're looking for a bagel. Those aren't bagels you guys sell. They are mutated rolls. Anyone who has ever lived in or near nyc knows what a real bagel is. They have ok bagels or rolls I mean. Anytime I've been there the cashier (owner) is always so rude and obnoxious. I ordered a breakfast sandwich once and a plain bagel cut into fours for my baby girl and I got an attitude. When I got home the plain bagel for my daughter was not in the bag. I didn't say anything since people make mistakes every once and while. The next time I went I called in a order (two breakfast sandwiches) because they take so long. When I got there I paid and had to wait another half hour. While waiting I realized that I forgot a plain bagel for my baby girl, handed them a plain bagel and asked if they can cut it into fours for me again. Once again I got an attitude. The cashier/owner said to me very rudely that I should bring the bagel up when I pay. I said ok well maybe I will not come in anymore. The everything bagels are great. The only thing I didn't like was that there are 10 girls behind the counter taking orders but only 1 person at the cash register. I was going to write a review based just on the taste of the cream cheese which was bitter, but then I had an unpleasant experience. I didn't read the sign that said no refills, on my way out I topped off my coffee. As I was nearing the door I heard a loud "excuse me". I went over and was told no refills, I opened my cup to show that I had just topped it off. I was informed that they had no way of knowing how much coffee I had put in. I was charged $1.00! I was embarrassed and shocked. Clearly I broke their rules, but there is a right way and a wrong way to treat a customer. The proper way to handle this would have been to inform me of the policy. I enrolled in classes at the community college, I'll be going to classes for a while. This was going to be my go to place for the next 3 years. I went here instead of Panera to give business to a local instead of a chain. At $4.96 for a coffee and a bagel, they have just lost probably around $500 in my future business. Wide variety of delicious bagels but the majority of the time I order a breakfast sandwich they get it wrong.

Bagels are solid as hell however when I went there the staff and owner were sooo rude besides the one older lady there. the bagel had a thin layer of cream cheese could still see the Bagel. The Taylor ham egg and cheese had no egg and they thought I would not notice I guess. Meat tastes like hot dog was cooked by teens. over priced. Stay away or just go for the bagel itself read more
