I used to go to Javan all the time back in the day when the wife and I lived in the neighborhood. After moving down to Westchester, we stopped. Recently, we were curious if our old go-to, Javan, was still any good. So, my wife and I dined there. The beef and chicken koobideh entrees were both excellent- so tender and juicy. This weekend, we have some friends visiting from San Francisco. As SF is a fantastic food town in its own right, we suggested two different food options that are better in L.A. than what you'll find up there: Korean BBQ or Persian food. The wife pushed a return to Javan. Alex, the manager, recommended the All Javan Combo for our party of 5. It includes tzatziki, hummus, salad, and flatbread to start followed by beef and chicken koobideh, chicken kabob, filet, lamb, and choice of rice. We added an eggplant stew with lamb shank and an extra skewer of chicken koobideh. Finished the meal off with hot tea, a sublimely-delicious saffron ice cream (house-made by Alex himself), baklava, and little bites that were like honey churro nubs. After we finished this feast of a meal, my daughter looked up at me and said, "This was one of the best Persian meals I've ever had." I must agree. This was a meal greater than the sum of its parts- food was very, very good and the experience was elevated by the warmth of Alex and his staff. It's rare that a restaurant works this hard to make its guests feel welcome. Free street parking and a full-bar (Alex is happy to whip-up a special cocktail for you). A large restaurant dominates the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Butler Ave. It's called Javan. The space is large and comfortable, the menu is large and mouth watering, the portions are large and delicious. The food is high-quality and perfectly cooked Iranian cuisine, but the prices are not large; they are very reasonable for the size and quality of the portions. The Middle Eastern ingredients are blended with subtle, exotic Mediterranean flavors. Imagine huge chunks of tender, perfectly cooked filet mignon on a bed of rice, surrounded by the usual accompaniment of charred sweet red peppers, onions, etc. We've sampled everything from fish, to chicken kabobs, lamb shank and rack of lamb, plus beautifully seasoned vegetarian dishes. The quality is consistently good. (A friend turned me on to their fluffy rice with cherries. So glad she did!) Don't worry that you'll be crushed by big crowds. It's a large space with plenty of room between tables. Therefore it sometimes feels half-empty (sigh of relief); relaxing, non-frenetic, and attractive. Perfect for a large family, romantic rendezvous, or a business dinner. In fact, my one reservation about writing this review is that I'm hoping all the good reviews won't spoil it for us. We search for little-known gems so we can enjoy fine food without raucous music and loud voices. The background noise at Javan is minimal and customers can chat with ease. Parking has never been a problem. Service is polite, smiling, and prompt. It can often be a last-minute choice without a reservation because the dining room, and the attractive bar, are so spacious. By the way, the owner, Alex, has an amazing memory. Although I only discovered this place about a year ago, Alex remembers everything my friends and I order; even though none of us has repeated the same entree twice. If you like Persian food or haven't tried it, this is a good spot to get acclimated. We came for lunch with friends who were eager to share their cuisine with us. I have had Persian food before and I like it fine... not my favorite but still... Javan is pretty and the service is very good. We made a lunch reservation but on a rainy Friday afternoon, they weren't busy. Still, probably make a reservation because this feels like an expat's favorite. We had the appetizer sampler and a big family-style platter of kebabs for our main course. Everything was good - the chicken with saffron and the two kinds of beef we tried were all good. The rice is delicious and the tea had a delicious spicy kick. Definitely a good place for an intro to Persian food or a nice meal if you're an expert. This is probably my favorite Persian restaurant on the west side! We usually come for their lunch special since we are local and always leave feeling unable to breathe after. My favorite is the chicken koobideh plate and a close second is the chicken kabob plate. Both are very juicy and flavorful. I don't know what they do to the chicken but it shocks me every time! I need to learn the secret to cooking chicken to be this juicy/flavorful! Service is always very welcoming and there is almost always ample seating at lunch. I arranged for a large group to join me for dinner at Javan. There were a total of 14 people and we are professionally connected as well as friends. Service was excellent. Food was delicious. The staff was pleasant and we were left alone to talk, but also served graciously and on time. People were very happy with the dinner and want to return to Javan. What a pleasant surprise! This place is so good. We almost went to Darya down the road, but the ratings here were higher, and I can see why. The food was fantastic. Everything we had was so flavorful! I am now a Gormeh Sabzi fan for life! The koobideh was super tender and seasoned really well. The Cornish game hen was definitely a favorite. It had just the right amount of char on the skin. Our server was Viktor, and he was the friendliest most helpful server. We have been to some Persian restaurants where we felt unwelcome. Street parking, we arrived to an almost completely empty restaurant on a Tuesday night ~6pm for dinner and enjoyed recommendations from our server: chicken, beef koobideh, and lamb shank. We added a stew and also some cherry rice and one more special rice. If you have not tried this style of rice or are new to Persian food, this will be an incredible meal! Because LA has such a high density of phenomenal Persian restaurants, I cant say that Javan has successfully distinguished itself at the top of the pack. Some honestly great Persian cuisine in West LA. It's really close to my work so I stop in often for lunch and every time it is consistently really good. It's very large on the inside so they can host many different sized parties and it is never cramped. Each time we have been, the service has been really great and the whole staff is always really polite. They also are quick with the drink refills which I really appreciate. They don't have a dedicated parking lot but street parking is very easy to find in this part of town. They have a very large menu filled with all sorts of Persian classics. For my most recent visit, I ordered the Kashk O Bademjan as my starter, which I thought was really good. It's nice to mix up appetizers instead of getting hummus every time. For my entrée I chose the Kobideh with a side of rice and salad. It's basically like a Persian meatball in the shape of a kebab. Honestly really delicious in flavor and something I order often and would highly recommend. They also bring out free wraps and onions, which I love. They don't skimp on the portion sizes either, and you will not leave hungry. Overall some delicious person food in a casual setting in a quieter part of Los Angeles. The dining room is spacious, the menu has larger format options and the food, service and atmosphere is always top notch. The owner is very knowledgeable and particular about how everything is prepared and presented. At most restaurants, chicken is often dry. Javan's is always moist and savory. Their gheymeh bademjan and fesenjan paired so well with the tadig and other rice dishes (baghali, zereshk and albaloo polo). Another measure we use is the tea after dinner. Javan's tea is ultra fragrant and served in handsome tea cups. It was a perfect foil for our baghlava. We truly enjoyed our dinner at Javan and they will always be our place for excellent Persian cuisine. read more

Had extra to bring home as well. **Chicken chunk skewer - one skewer of chicken breast, moist, and well seasoned I've had their beef koobideh and grilled vegetables, all great. Sumac sprinkled over the rice adds some tartness. Very clean bathroom and on some nights you'll hear a live piano. By the entrance is a case with tempting lemon bars and baklavah. Just quality food all around. On a whim and craving Middle Eastern food, I stopped by Javan Restaurant On Santa Monica Blvd, and it was worth the visit. I ordered the Combination beef and chicken Koobideh with basmati rice, and a side of babaganoush, garlic sauce, and Tatziki sauce to go with the flat bread. The food is simply delicious. Both the beef and chicken Koobideh are well seasoned and full of flavor. More importantly, the chicken is plump and not dry. A lot of times I add a lot more sumac as a way to enhance the dish, but I really don't need anything more on this dish. The basmati rice has a wonderful aromatic flavor and the grilled tomato had a nice sweetness to it. They all just work so well together. As for the side, I like the combination of the garlic sauce, which was surprisingly less pasty but more complex than I usually have, and the yogurt-cucumber is refreshing. They go well with the taftoon flatbread. Finally, the babaganoush is just delectable and dependable as ever. It's almost not even just a side dish on itself, and I do wish I've gotten it earlier so I can enjoy it by itself rather having to choose between that and the two other sauces to compliment my Koobideh combo and the taftoon bread. I'm not gonna lie - I came here over a year ago, but I'm choosing to write about my experience now because I think this restaurant is worth it :) My boyfriend and I were feeling Mediterranean food one night, so we looked up some spots in the area and stumbled upon this gem. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted and asked where we came from, etc. etc. We were surprised by how personal our experience was before we had even ordered - I felt like I was being treated like a celebrity. The owner (at least we were pretty sure he was the owner) came up to us during our meal to thank us for being there too. :') Granted, the restaurant was pretty empty, but the owner had no obligation whatsoever to talk to us so it was all just a very pleasant surprise. The top-notch service didn't end there - we were offered bread, hummus, and tzatziki, all on the house (and all of which was delicious by the way). For our mains, we ordered kobideh with grilled veggies, and for dessert, we ordered a chocolate mousse. Even a year later, I still remember that all of the food was delicious and absolutely hit the spot. The interior is also well decorated and a nice place for a date, friends, or family. We had an amazing experience here (probably the best service I've ever experienced to date STILL), and if it weren't for the fact that we usually order in when we want Mediterranean food, I'm sure we would have been back by now. You can also get half salad and half rice for your dish for an additional $2. I had the Greek salad which I enjoyed. If you're not much of a vinegar person you might be turned off by the dressing. I would have liked to leave 5 stars but the Barg kabob had a lot of fatty pieces not sure how filet mignon has so much fat pieces . The chicken kabob was excellent best thing there . Rice was decent not really any saffron on the rice very plain . Appetizer was good nothing spectacular. I ordered grilled white fish with sabzi polo before it was so tasty but this time they didn't have sabzi polo so I ordered white rice with grilled white fish! first of all, the rice was not enough and fish tasted horrible that I almost throw up!
