I'm so sorry to do this. I had high expectations. Lots of hype on this little hole-in-the-wall takeout joint. (It is literally a hole-in-the-wall!) The buns were ok. Not sure they were worth the effort. Ordered b phone with an hour wait time, then waited inside this tiny, crowded no frills spot for over 1/2 hour. The gentleman/owner is hilarious calling out the orders and having conversations with the regulars and customers. Very upbeat. I'm just not someone who craves buns. Had another meal from Jayd Bun last night. I was literally starving, so I didn't take pictures before inhaling my huge meal. As usual, it was phenomenal. The buns were the perfect texture; soft & squishy, with a bit of crunch on the bottom. With each bite, juices poured out. SO GOOD. I went rogue & ordered a couple of items I normally don't. Omgosh... amazing. Jin Jin dumplings (vegetarian). The wrap on these was my favorite part. With the buns, the dough is also my favorite part. I'm kind of carbohydrates person. Most places screw this up, & focus on the interior/contents of their pot stickers/buns/dumplings. Jayd Bun items prioritizes the interior AND the exterior. And for that, I am forever thankful. I also got cold peanut butter noodles, which I normally don't get. The sauce was flawless. The texture was so good; it stuck beautifully to the noodles. And it had carefully sliced up tomatoes & julianned cucumbers. Yum. And of course I got their regular noodles. There is absolutely nothing like this place anywhere around here. I wish this spot was closer to me. I rarely venture out of South County so I was excited that hubby had some errands to run in Wakefield. We ordered 3 orders of pork buns. Yes. They are THAT good. 3 boxes is enough for a family of 4 (3 adults one 10 year old). I really like the little changes they've done (with take out). The sweet soy sauce (heavenly manna) is now in black cups. The black vinegar sauce is still in the clear cups. It has a very pungent and sour taste. But I found that if you mix both sauces together, you get a near perfect dumpling sauce. You can also distinguish them apart by the scallions floating inside the sweet soy sauce. The boxes of buns now have a snazzy Jayd Bun logo. Also they are now offering their sweet soy sauce and their Dragon Fire-Yum-Tastic hot chili paste for sale in larger containers. I'm quite certain they did that for me. I would bring my mason jar and have them fill it up for me. Please please please come here and support a wonderful local business! This is an authentic (Baozi) Chinese noodle and bun place. If you want the traditional American Chinese food restaurant with the menus that look the same, this isn't it. If you love Asian noodles, fresh food and distinct flavors run to this place! I can't say enough about my first experience with this place (5 weeks ago now - sorry for the delay). I had the Spicy Tomato Noodle. It was fresh and flavorful. The noodles were tender and delicious. It appears that nothing sits in a pan anywhere. It takes 15 minutes or so to get your order. I appreciated that all the more, and the food is worth the wait. The husband of the husband-wife owner team is extremely friendly (in a genuine way). He clearly takes pride in their little place. (I didn't meet his wife, but I'm sure she is as well.). He offered me a taste of their family recipe Congee (a spicy porridge with ginger). It was really outstanding and something I wouldn't have thought about when I think of Asian food. I can't wait to go back and try the dumplings!! read more

Who the hell wants to cook on their wedding anniversary.... and i'd had the biggest craving for the peanut noodles at Jayd Bun (You all know what im talking about)So i figured id email Jayd Bun and tell them my story.. im lazy yada yada it's my anniversary i dont want to cook. Not ever thinking they could fit me in, at such late notice. Welll guess what i get an email back within the hour. "Ofcourse Kelly.. say 5:45?"In my mind i'm thinking i'm gonna get those peanut noodles in my belly, But couldn't help to think WOW!!!! Joe and Annie wanted to make our anniversary special by providing their amazing food on our anniversary! So i go crazy i'm like that's it i want peanut noodles for days, im not cooking ....i want leftovers! I go there to pick up the food and Joe comes out and "Says happy anniversary kellllllllyyyy" then i proceed to drive home. I Get home and empty my take out order-salvating btw. We drove down from PVD to check out this restaurant. Be aware, this place is takeout only, which definitely cuts down on the ambiance as you are either eating at home or on picnic tables outside. So be aware that you should call in an order ahead of time. To cut to the chase, I thought the food was pretty good but far from Best in New England. My family was largely underwhelmed. We found the apps better than the entrees. The buns were tasty. Dumplings were ok but pretty standard. Jade fusion pancake was decent fare. Would be great at half the price. $12-16 for apps to eat on picnic tables is a bit much IMHO. We were less enamored with the entrees. The cool part was the fact that the noodles were handmade. Love that. However, the wonton noodles were rather bland and lacked flavor. The October noodle had an odd spicy flavor that my son just couldn't appreciate. Spicy yo po was probably the best and had a kimchee-type flavor which seemed more Korean than Chinese. Lastly, I had the Ja Jen men noodles. Traditionally these are considered peasant food by the Chinese (although they are enjoyed by Koreans), so I found it funny that they were some of the priciest noodles on the menu. They were OK but nothing to write home about. Conclusion: Decent Chinese food? Yes. Amazing? Not really. Best in New England? - especially with the takeout experience, it's gotta be a no. Yesterday we finally took the 45 trip from CT to Jayd Bun in South Kingstown, RI and man we were beyond pleased with our surprise choices. I call it surprise choices because I got there and I gave Joe some ideas of what I was looking for and he delivered. We had the Yo po Noodle with the egg on top, wonton soups, spicy wontons, chicken bao buns and pork JinJin dumplings. The thought put in every ingredient and flavor on each of the dishes was very impressive, no wonder they have received so many deserving accolades. When my picky grandkids ate it and my preggo daughter didn't complain of heartburn after eating it proved that the food was for the whole family. I wanted to like this spot more than I did. They did a couple things REALLY well, but overall I am not sure I would ever go back. First off, it's still takeout only. This is fine, except it can take ~1 hour to actually receive the food after ordering. They tell you 30 to 45 minutes, but trust me it's always an hour. Sitting waiting for my food on two separate occasions I saw people coming up to get their food, only to be told it's another 15 minutes. Onto the food, I'd recommend only their eponymous buns and the soups. The buns are quite good, a more savory version of the popular bao you see all over. I preferred the pork stuffed over the chicken stuffed. For soup, they have a really nice wonton noodle soup flavored well with and added kicker of sesame oil. Where I ran into trouble were the entrees. The 'Jayd Fusion' is a scallion pancake topped with scallion oil. It resulted in a sour stomach due to the oily sauce on the pancake absorbed into an oily pancake. Oil on oil = blech. While more of an appetizer, the fails continued. The Chinese Pancake (different from a scallion pancake) is a Jian Bing pancake with a hotdog. While in theory, this should be good by itself - having to go home to eat it leads to a soggy experience. While not as much as a stomach turning fail as the Jayd Fusion pancake, this led to a gummy experience. The flavors were nice, but this is not a 'bring home and let it steam in the container for 10 minutes' dish. The final fail came from the 'October Noodle'. I expected a nice noodle dish, fired in the wok with lovely flavors and wok hei. Instead, I got boiled noodles with a scoop of 'meat sauce' on top. I think this dish is *supposed* to be a picked cabbage pork noodle dish (酸菜猪肉面) where the topping was more of a soup than a wok-fried noodle dish, which when I have had it before had an equal amount of shredded pork and cabbage to thin noodles. What I got felt like a poorly made Italian dish of boiled thick noodles and a small 'scoop' of ground pork. It lacked the 'tons of flavor' described on the menu and the pork sauce was also rather oily. The dish I am used too would have had the noodles in a nice thick pork broth with loads of shredded pork and tangy cabbage. I tasted no tang nor saw any cabbage. In summary, given the time required and other challenges if I do return I'll stick with their buns and avoid the other items. It's sad as I really want to like this place more given the awards and positive reviews... but all this did is make me want better made Chinese cuisine. read more
