Self-care has been my MO this year and what better way to treat yoself than to go to a salon and get pampered with a cut and color? I recently visited JE Salon and got just that with the expertise of Suzie. I was a bit nervous going in because I've always gotten home haircuts by my mom in the past, and I was satisfied with them; I didn't really care too much about how my hair looked - until now. Suzie made me feel really comfortable with her friendly professionalism and when I told her I didn't really know what I wanted to do, she made suggestions based on my hair history, current condition of my hair, and future upkeep plans. After years of heading to the cheapest local barbershop or supercuts, I finally decided it was time for a real barber. I am a member of the gym where Jason has his salon, and got to know him as a friend before he was my barber. He takes his time and really gets to know you and your hair. I have curly hair and a lot of hairdresser don't know how to handle it, I went to a couple of places before Jason including the well-known Throne PDX, but please don't go there because you can't call those guys hairdressers, only one thing they can do and that is a simple fade. I had never colored my hair before and she was so kind and easy going! She colored, cut, and conditioned my hair plus gave me lessons on how to style it for $95. Yvette Zaverucha is without question the very best hair stylist I have ever had. I first found her in 2002 and have followed her several times as she moved to and from different salons. I believe that if she moved to Alaska, I would go there to have my hair done. She is an artist, as Jason told a customer in a different review. I am sorry that person had an unpleasant experience, because I can assure anyone reading this that in the almost ten years I have been Yvette's client I have never had anything but exceptional service. Yvette always makes me feel beautiful when I walk out the salon -- and almost without exception, people stop me and compliment my hair cut and color -- which speaks volumes about her skills since I am an overweight 60 year old woman. I am a very loyal client once I find a stylist I know I can trust. When I first came to Yvette, it was about a year after moving to Portland. Soon after arriving in Oregon, I had my hair cut by someone recommended to me, and the result was so horrific that it took me that full year to grow it out to where something could actually be done with it. I used to love this salon. I had a stylist there named Allison and my prior visits were wonderful, Jason (the owner) would come and check my hair after the stylist was done, which he didn't need to because I was always pleased. However, I made an appointment last week and discovered Allison had left the salon. Jason suggested I use Yvette, a stylist I didn't know of, but trusted the owner's judgement. I had an appointment today (2/3/12), showed up, shook Yvettes hand, sat down in the chair and immediately felt judged as the stylist fingered my hair as if she didn't want to touch it. I have lovely hair, I have it maintained at the salon, it is very thick and healthy - natural curl when not blown out. I recently had a coppery red put in with some strawberry blonde highlights a few months ago and though I love it, it is too difficult to keep up with the new growth so I thought if I weaved in some medium brown leaving the reds as more a "highlight", as a complement it would be nice. Having done my hair like this many times before over the years depending on the mood I am in for color I didn't think it would be such a big deal. I was wrong. The stylist begin to tell me that she would have to totally change the color of my hair, it was a long involved process and she would need to do three steps and put semi permanent color on my roots. I questioned this since I have never had to do that process to my hair in the years I have been coloring it. She insisted then and she again "fingered" my hair with a nasty look on her face then said "well honestly your hair is orange". I was so amazed how blatantly rude she was that I was shocked. So I said to her, I want to keep the red as a base, just put in lowlights of brown. She said to me, look I've been coloring hair 20 years, I can't just do that. And I told her I appreciate that but I have been getting my hair colored for about 20 years and never has doing something like this been made to sound so complicated. So she said, look, our personalities don't mesh, you need to make another appointment with another stylist. I was shocked! Having met the owner before and figuring he was always interested in pleasing his clients, especially ones being treated so rudely by their stylist - I asked for him. He came in and asked the problem, with his arms folded and looked like he already had sided with his stylist. The stylist Yvette stood behind me, Jason was in front of me and I felt like a child being intimidated by my parents. I felt uncomfortable that I couldn't just speak with Jason, but I felt I needed to let him know how his stylist was treating a client. So I told him, I felt very frustrated that Yvette wasn't interested in what I actually wanted to do with my hair and she was being very rude, condescending and abrupt with me and after I asked questions about why she said certain methods had to be used, she told me our personalities didn't match and I had to go find another stylist. So Jason then says that I need to understand that Yvette is an artist and she knows what is best for my hair and I just needed to listen to her, the problem was communication. I told him I understand she is an artist, the point is she is not listening to anything I have to say nor is interested in anything I have to say. Yvette then jumps in and says, "what she doesn't understand is that the process is complicated because she is trying to change her entire hair color", I turned to her just shocked by her blatant lie (or fact that she really hadn't listened to a word I said) and said to Jason, "that is not true, I do not want to change my hair color, what I want to do is..." at that Jason cut me off, said "we don't want people like in our salon, you need to leave." I was shocked and said to him " What?! I have come here before and had a stylist that was wonderful! He just ignored me and left. I left the salon, will never ever go back and suggest no one else support this business either. read more
