I've been ISO a new hair stylist/salon and I'm happy to report I've found it! Magnum Opus is a beautiful, large space with plenty of natural lighting, tons of chairs, and the nicest people! I was immediately greeted when I walked in, given a cape to throw on, and offered a complimentary beverage. They also have their own parking lot so you don't have to worry about feeding the meter during your appointment. A handful of the stylists are in an apprenticeship program post-cosmetology school, and it's clear they're learning from the best. There are numerous stylists to choose from so there's always a lot of availability, ranging from different price points. If you're unsure on who to see, I recommend calling to explain what you're looking to have done so they can pair you with the best stylist to fit your needs. You can also check out the salon/stylists on IG! Liv was so kind and patient while I talked through my vision and showed her inspo photos! She took the time to explain the unique French-cutting style they use, as well as the different products she was using throughout my appointment. My hair looked and felt amazing after! I found the salon back in 1988 and I have followed them every time they moved locations. My husband joined the military and we were out of town from 1994 to 2009 but every time I came home on a visit I'd go and get my hair done there. We reside in Portland now and this is my go to spot!! I went in with a photo of Balayage color that I wanted. I decided to go in to a higher end salon hoping that their education and styles would be current. I should have read the reviews before I went in. First, I went in and noted she was charging me for Balayage but basically gave me highlights. Besides the toner and cut, it didn't even look like I got my hair done or the blonde "Money Piece" in the front. So I called a day later, and slid me in for a "Fix" with the same stylist. She basically highlighted the front section and said it wasn't going to look like the photo because her roots are darker. I wanted brighter blonde pieces to frame my face, not dark roots. So here is the final product. Close, but not balayage. Just a chunk of highlights in the front. My more affordable stylist (who doesn't feel comfortable doing balayage) could have done this easily. Two stars for the dark chocolate by the hair dryers. Lol read more

I'll start my review by saying that I've been getting my hair done at Magnum Opus since the world reopened following Covid. It was the only salon that I could find that was able to get me in. They set me up with a stylist who was supposedly an expert in cutting curly hair and they used my color line of choice, Goldwell. I was ecstatic. Initially I was happy with my color, but the cuts where hit and miss. The stylist was able to do one cut I liked - If I requested anything else, I left with the same old lady/bank teller haircut. Simply put, it resembled the Flintstones characters, Betty Rubble's hair. The one time I expressed my unhappiness with my cut, instead of using it as an opportunity to improve, I was told I should get my cuts elsewhere. I did just that. My only regret is not changing salons for my color at that time. The situation with my color was exactly the same, as long as I didn't request any change, my hair looked fine. The last time I requested going lighter, it was a total disaster. I was left at sink and told one of the trainees would take over when the stylist left to start with a different client. Well, they forgot about me. I literally had to raise my voice to get someone to come rinse the color out of my hair. A different stylist ran over and started rinsing me. My hair was fried. Not only were the highlights terrible - at least half of them were drastically overprocessed - my hair had a slight green hue it. They actually had the nerve to act like it turned out great and charged full price. I was told not to worry; it could easily be corrected my next appointment with a gloss process. If I was smart, I would have never returned. Since I did return, I suppose the next horrible experience is my own fault. On my next visit, when the color should have been corrected. She literally did the opposite of what I asked using a dark dark brown process when I had said I wanted my base and brows the lighter shade of brown used previously. My hair is now darker than I've ever worn it and my brows are black. The only way this would be possible is if it was purposely done out of malice. In my opinion, it's a fireable offense. I WILL NEVER RETURN TO MAGNUM OPUS. When I first started going to Magnum Opus, the prices were low so I overlooked some of the smaller offences. However, the prices have more than doubled and the service has worsened. Simply put, both service and quality are lacking, it's all about speed. My appointments never exceed 1.5 hours regardless of the number of processes booked. The stylist from a different salon, that currently cuts my hair, generally spends longer than that for a cut, let alone a base, brows, balayage and a cut. That is far too many services to complete in 1.5 hours. Again, the attention to detail is not there. After leaving the salon with crooked brows on more than one occasion, having to get my hair cut elsewhere due to outright incompetence, being charged for a balayage process and getting foils with the process starting an inch out instead, being handed off to an inexperienced intern who couldn't even do a proper blowout on multiple occasions, and enduring two color disasters, I feel I can accurately give Magnum Opus one star. Please think twice before making an appointment at this establishment. They are no longer the reputable salon that they used to be. Addendum: The water pressure at MO is so low that I have never left an appiontmwent with adequately rinsed hair. read more

I had a color and cut. The stylist, Theresa, was supposed to be one of their Master Stylists. She didn't listen to what I wanted, the cut was one of the worst cuts I have ever had. The colr was okay but not the color I requested. The cost of this was over $350, and not only not worth the price but I will need to go to someone who can RE-CUT my hair. I could have done a better job cutting my own hair. The salon is highly rated but this is one of the worst experiences I have ever had and completely overpriced. I honestly don't know where to start... it's been several weeks since my appointment at Magnum Opus and I still get upset. I come out of the shower, look in the mirror and feel like crying. When I first made my appointment I was so excited. I was booking the appointment because after almost 3 years of no haircuts (thank you Covid); my hair was very long and was past my butt. It was so heavy, hard to wash and with two kids I was ready to get it cut off to a more manageable length. I told my stylist I wanted something chest length, maybe with layers, I wanted to dye it mushroom blond and I don't style my hair so a cut that suits my natural wavy hair would be nice. She told me that she couldn't do the blond I wanted because it was an expensive balayage that would take many appointments. I told her no problem, I just wanted to be blond at the very least. Long story short I ended up with a hair cut and color that didn't look anything like what I had asked for. I asked why there wasn't any layering and she told me it was so that I could braid my hair back. I figured she knew what she was talking about, so I headed to the front to pay. When they told me the cost I was shocked. It was over $400 and if I hadn't had a gift card I wouldn't have been able to afford it. I had to cover about half of the total myself. When I got to my car and looked at the receipt it said that I had gotten a balayage and the majority of the up-charge was due to that. I was so confused and thought maybe I had miscommunicated? But the more I thought the more I was certain I remember her saying she wouldn't do that. Several days after I got my hair done I knew it just wasn't right. I couldn't braid it back because it was so thick and un-layered. And after I washed my hair, the natural wave in my hair went crazy. It did not go well with the thick cut and it popped out and made me look like Hermione's ugliest sister. I tried everything to manage it and nothing worked so I called the salon in tears and asked if they could fix it. They said they were happy to fix it but insisted I see the same stylist. When I came then next day she was awful to me. She badgered me with angry questions, intimidated me and blamed me for my hair looking bad. She was clearly unwilling to listen to anything I had to say and I cried through my entire appointment. I left my appointment not only feeling hurt and confused but utterly ugly. I suffer from depression and It's hard for me to love myself. The thing is, hair grows back. I know I can change it eventually. But the way I was spoken to wounded me in a way that won't go away quite so easily. I look in the mirror and hear her words in my head over and over again. I deserve to feel pretty when I leave a salon, not ugly. read more

This was not the first salon I went to when we moved to Portland but i wish it was. Thankfully it is my go to salon now. Making good use of the still industrial area of the pearl by savier has given them the luxury of a huge salon with tons of talented stylists and colorists and one stop shop. Everything is attractive inside and super professional at check in. Somehow it is always full but never feels crowded. I was also lucky to randomly get Sara as my stylist. I trust her so much that i let her chop off my hair into a funky bob and have no regrets. I also love that she does cuts and color so I don't have to go to two different people. My bob is funky and stylish and my color is on point. She knows what she is doing and is a hoot to Chat with while getting your hair done. Plus she always looks awesome. You want your stylist to look good. I've walked out of here happy every time and I'm a picky pain in the butt. My only issue is I hate not being able to put a tip on my credit card but they have their own ATM so that's nice. Also I can't always figure out the pricing. It can be reasonable but then today I paid $200 for color which I have never paid before. Not clear on that. Otherwise I'm grateful to have found this wonderful spot to keep my locks looking fresh. read more

Wow I was very taken aback yesterday after taking my daughter to our favorite salon Magnum Opus. One of the hairstylists was very rude to one of her helpers on the floor yesterday. The helper looked to be trying to communicate with a hairstylist and there seemed to be a bit of a language barrier. The hair stylist became more and more irritated by the helper not understanding her, getting louder and more angry very quickly. I was not the only one taking notice at the scene being made. In this day and age with all that is going on with equality I cannot believe this stylist was treating someone with this much disrespect. Please work on the presentation of professionalism in front of clients because it makes for a very uncomfortable experience. read more

No, I won't give you the name of my stylist at Magnum Opus, because then I will never be able to get an appointment with her again! But the level of expertise at this hair salon is pretty consistent. You can always count on getting an expert opinion on style and color, and the stylists are hyper-educated and constantly learning new and better techniques. It seems as if they move hundreds of men and women in and out of there as quickly as possible on a daily basis - a wash, cut, dry and style only takes around 30-45 minutes. I went to Shae with damaged, dull hair which had different strips, shades of very dark and light colors and stubborn grays. She knew exactly what to do to bring the shine and give me the warm, natural, even color I was looking for without damaging my hair. She did a great job cutting my thick wavy hair without over layering and thinning. My hair feels so soft and healthy even after one appointment. I am extremely happy with my first visit. I care more about the stylist than how the salon looks but MO is a great place to be while you are getting your hair done; clean and good atmosphere. read more

Oh my gosh... where do I start. The people at Magnum Opus are so amazing! I wanted to get balayage highlights and went to a horrible salon. Learned my lesson. I needed to find a place to fix it so I did some research and found this salon. It was a Saturday morning and everywhere else I was searching was booked but when I called these guys they understood I needed help and got me in within 2 hours from my call! Ashley C. did my hair and she was so awesome. She knew exactly what to do and I was outta there quickly. After my visit I set up appointments with her for the next six months - that's how much I loved my hair when she was done! They are a modern salon and are up to date on cuts, color and products. The price was what I expected for great service - $130 for balayage, wash, cut, and style (I have long hair with layers and bangs). BTW they don't leave you walking out of the salon soaking wet. She blow-dried my hair and it looked so good the day of and a couple days later. + They have their own parking lot which is a big deal for parking in Portland. read more

I have been going to this place for years - after another place butchered my hair, I needed someone to fix a highlighting incident gone awry. These hairdressers are all trained to exacting standards in-house, after they have already had the required schooling to get their licenses, so the training is well above industry standards. This led to another discovery - I can go to any of their 45 hairdressers and get the same color every time! Their training process makes it so that all stylists use the same methods and get the same results each time - at least for color. The only other place I recommend in Portland is actually owned by an ex-Magnum Opus stylist! This place is awesome. read more

Aksana was exactly what I was looking for in a stylist - she took the time to understand my needs and challenges and brought to life her suggestions and the outcome was a haircut that I was 100% happy with. There's nothing worse than leaving a salon and being unhappy with your hair cut and feeling like you overpaid for a mediocre cut. I enjoyed the look and feel of the salon and can confidently say I left feeling happy and excited to come back for my next cut! I've been three times now, and have been happy with my haircuts by Teresa, who is lovely and totally professional. It's hard transitioning to a new city, and finding someone who is a great fit on the haircut front is one issue I no longer have to deal with, thankfully! :) My only issues with the salon is the lack of professionalism of the front desk staff (asking if I want coffee, then promptly forgetting about it two seconds later; checking me in for an appointment only to find out after waiting 20 minutes that there's been a mistake in the booking) and the fact that you cannot leave gratuity on a credit/debit card bill. There's an ATM inside, but they charge a $2.50 fee to use it. Just seems to be in a business where tipping is a regular feature the card machine should be able to have tips written in. Basic stuff, really. read more

I probably won't return this time. I have gone to this salon off and on since they moved to their new location on Savier for the last 3 years. I will say that most of the stylists are good on style and color, well- educated with great hair care - they do use Kerastase! ...but Magnum Opus just getting more hurried for the price. It feels like a production factory moving men and women in and out of there as quickly as possible on a daily basis with little time for pampering for a fairly high price. My stylist was working on 4 different people while my highlights were lifting. In the end - my highlights were not quite the color I wanted so I just decided to go find a new salon. read more

I really want to like this place but it just has too many downsides. For starters, it's a big, loud hair factory. There is no pampering, the experience is very choreographed and rushed. I always ask for the same senior stylist, who is very sweet, but she seems only capable of cutting my hair in a plain vanilla bob with lots-o-blonde highlights. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of invention going on here and even if the stylist took the time out of her obviously very busy schedule to talk to me about doing something with my hair that would just be for me I doubt she could hear me over the blaring music that bounces relentlessly off the concrete walls and floor. If you need a recovery haircut after a really bad cut (why I went this last time), I can recommend this place. Your cut will probably be fine. But if you want a signature look, and a relaxing experience, this isn't the place. read more

This salon was recommended y my sister who recently had a great experience. I went in and saw Jamie, who was AMAZING. The salon is really nice and spacious inside. The front desk team was so sweet and welcoming when I got in. Jamie was so great and I left feeling like a million bucks. I don't know how to rate this salon. Do I go by the decor and location or the outcome of my service rendered? I'll try to do both. On a positive note, the salon is in a great location and has free parking. That's huge when it comes to the Pearl and downtown area. It's also stylishly decorated and has a comfortable vibe. My stylist was very nice and super personable. Unfortunately, I have long, straight hair and want to spend little to no time styling it in the morning - so I am rarely happy with the haircuts I receive. To date, I have been to 3 different stylists in 3 years (all different salons) and none have been able to layer the frame of my face to my satisfaction. What I want are those long layers that do not need to be maintenanced after swimming all day. Think Jennifer Anniston on her wedding day to Brad Pitt. What I always get - this time at Magnum included - is too many layers in back and uneven layers in the front that I have to curl and grow back out - for someone else to try to cut/shear correctly. I brought in a photo of what I wanted - knowing I would not walk out looking like Reese Witherspoon - but hoping to have her hair (from the 2010 Golden Globes). While I got my (long, grown out) bangs cut shorter, the stylist wouldn't go as short as Reese's, afraid I would freak out. That, I could appreciate. Of course, I cut another inch off as soon as I got home. I do wish my gal would have gone a little more sparingly on the back - since she took off 5-6 inches and I thought I'd only lose 3. No biggy, it'll grow back...I just won't have Kardashian curls again until the end of the year. I can't say I wouldn't recommend the stylist to someone else....they'd just need to be more attentive than I was. I also need to be more assertive when it comes to questioning what is taking place between the scissors and the hair on my head. I should have been more specific about how many inches I was willing to let her cut off the back. I also should not have let her style my hair with a blow dryer - in a fashion I would never wear it and instead insist she flat iron the front, so I could see if it could be worn straight. Had I done that, I've have known then and there that she needed to fix the front (or work on it - since I can't remember if she even did any cutting around my face). My hair isn't so bad that I need to go somewhere else to have it fixed, but it does need to grow out so I can get it cut in a way that I don't have to put so much work into it. I have been coming to MO for 6 years and would never even consider any other salon. The morale and professionalism of the employees, the thorough mentorship offered to new hairstylists and the breadth and care afforded through their services are just far superior to other Portland salons. And with a hair style and color that needs monthly attention, I have tried many before Magnum Opus. Beware that this is a busy place. This is NOT where you go if want to stare at koi laden water features while you contemplate your oneness with the universe. This is where you go if you want exceptional service, great hair and attentive stylists who will devote 100 percent during you appointment, while making sure you get to your 1 o'clock business lunch. I have been visiting Lainie for my color for almost 7 years. She has never once disappointed me. In fact I now leave most decisions up to her because she understands color so well. I seriously get near-weekly compliments on my color since I started seeing Lainie and it always makes me feel so good! Lainie is also really great at recommending additional treatments (gloss, deep conditioning etc) on an as-needed basis only, and I have *never* felt pressure to spend more than I am comfortable with. My only (minor) complaints are that this salon is a teaching salon so often the assistants finish the dry and style, and they are definitely not all at the same level. Also, I feel like the front desk gals could be a tad warmer when welcoming people into the salon and when checking them back out. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review about MO all this time... In fairness it was probably because I felt badly about leaving my last place (they were great but it was time to move on.) Now that I've come away with yet another (!) great (!) cut and have seen my gal Jill Jeffries' name on at least one other review, I have to speak up. This last cut (short:almost pixie-ish, definitely "gamine") was a request from me to Jill to please duplicate the previous cut. I had never gotten so many compliments from so many people for so much of the life of a cut as I did about this last one. I didn't have to stand to get my hair cut this or the last time (I read a yelper's review and smiled) and I did pay for the cut (a very reasonable $55 before tip) but yes, given $55 to spend on my mother/grandmother/retired-public-school-educator self where would I spend it?: Jill Jeffries at Magnum Opus would be one of the people I would invest in! She is:down-to-earth and real. Smart. Funny. Responsive to my picayune quirks and needs. Professional. (She cuts the hair of at least three other women I know and I do not hear anything about any of them from her.) This review is for MO. Magnum Opus. But as all y'all know out there, it's the person and not just the shop that counts when it comes to those very personal services. Jill Jeffries (at MO) is GREAT.
