Casual atmosphere (again, no frills) Jenny's provides all of the above. A friend and I came here for breakfast on Sunday around 11:15am. The restaurant is small and was packed. We had about a 10 minute wait, and there was a steady flow of people who came in after us who had to wait. After being seated, we were immediately asked what we'd like to drink, and our drink orders came quickly after. Our waitress came over quickly to ask for our food orders, and came back several times in nicely spaced timing to keep asking us this, as I had a horrible time making my mind up. The menu is large and offers lots of the typical diner breakfast fare that you can find at most places. Our waitress ended up suggesting that I order the "Double-Up" and making some substitutions after asking me what I wanted (which was basically everything #fatgirlmoment). My meal with substitutions included 2 large pancakes, scrambled eggs, two strips of bacon, one sausage patty, and hashbrowns. 'Twas a very satisfying meal indeed. My friend got the steak and eggs and was also satisfied. Our total with both meals, a small OJ, and two coffees, totaled $24 after tax, so not bad. I'm sorry to rate this place 2 stars because it is an old school diner, and I'm all for preserving traditions. That, plus the fact the owner is a very nice lady who is trying to make the place work well. My issues with Jenny's include very slow service - especially with coffee refills - and inconsistent food quality. Examples of the inconsistency I've encountered include the freshness of the biscuits, the availability of some items (country fried steak and beignets), and the pancakes are sometimes too chewy. I think these problems can be solved with some more employees and a cook who maintains good quality. Again it is a nice place and I hope the improvements come and remain. read more

One of my favorite breakfast spots. Jenny's is a small diner. Jenny is almost always in the back cooking. To be honest I can be a pain with requests like burnt hash browns and well done bacon but Jenny's always accommodates my requests. Daily Specials are listed on the front wall. Homemade pies (slices) are now being offered. The staff works very hard and is a friendly group if you take the time to get to know them. I asked for the home fries very crispy and they obliged. It was good. My breakfast date ordered the skillet scramble and asked to add a side of bacon. When the order came out they had put the ham and bacon in with the eggs and potatoes. He asked for a side of bacon and the waitress brought it out. Everything on their menu is under $10. It's been a while since Ms T and I went out for breakfast for various reasons including managing caloric intake. She has wanted to go to Jenny's so we went for late Sunday breakfast (~10:30am). The place was bustling as is the norm for most places at this time. We had a brief wait for a table but when seated our order was taken quickly. I really have been avoiding breakfast, so ordered the vegetarian omelet with no onion but with some cheese added. Ms T had a Farm Skillet (or some such name) with two eggs over fried potatoes, peppers, sausage and onion; ordered without onion. I have to say up front that three stars are about all I expect to ever give a breakfast place. I don't mean that in a bad way. There is not much they can do to screw up eggs or on the other hand, to make them special. There were plusses and minuses at Jenny's and I will leave it at three stars. Plus - I really liked the way the vegetables are sautéed into the egg for the omelet. This means that there are not a bunch of steamed, watery vegetables inside making the whole thing wet. This is probably the first time I have had one fixed this way and it would be my choice. It reminded me of the way our Indian friends said they make omelets. I really liked that the omelet was leathery (but not tough) and not fluffy. Minus - the omelet had no salt or other seasoning; zero, zilch, nada. OK, so I understand that some people can't have salt and some are offended at the notion salt of interfering with the delicate and subtle flavors of the dish, but this is a diner (apparently; the sign out side and on the door says Jenny's Diner but the menus and the register receipt says Jenny's Cafe) and this is not health food. Season this omelet and you have something very good, a notch above the ordinary. Plus - the fried potatoes are clearly homemade. They have a great hand cut look and nice grilled crust and were done just right. Minus - the fried potatoes were absolutely unseasoned. Fry in a little onion and celery; add a little salt and pepper and you have something special, not like the potatoes dumped out of a frozen bag at most places. First Watch would be an example of frozen, mealy potato cubes. I seasoned these at the table, but it is just not the same. Plus - I asked for hot sauce and they had a decent brand of Louisiana sauce. Since I forgot to bring my little bottle of Valentina, I was concerned about having to eat Tabasco ("the first and the worst"). Plus - Ms T's eggs were fixed the way she ordered them, over easy. Minus - She ordered the skillet without onions and then spent most of her meal picking out a huge pile of half cooked onions. We were unable to flag down the waitress and after a while she just decided to deal with it. Minus - When we checked out, the cashier asked how everything was. Ms T remarked that she ordered without onion but the plate was delivered with tons of onion. The girl clearly did not care and did not want to know. She kind of grunted and that was all. I'm not the kind who wants to see managers or have food for free, but if they are going to ask how things are, they need to be able to respond when things were not up to expectations. This reflex question that they ask is meaningless without some appropriate response to a negative. So the plusses and minuses kind of offset each other and leave me where I always start at three stars. I do think Jenny's is better than the other places we have been for breakfast in and around Chesterfield and Creve Coeur. It would be my choice for return over the others. This is on the strength of the omelet technique and nicely cooked potatoes, lack of seasoning aside. If they put a little thoughtfulness into seasonings, for me this is easily four stars. As for Ms T, she never forgives an onion mistake. read more
