This diner is a gem! I can't believe I've been driving by it for three years and never treated myself to the great food and service they offer. I can honestly say it won't be long before I'm back. Who doesn't love a diner that serves up breakfast all day long, if you want it? Tonight I was in the mood to try their fried mullet, and was not disappointed. Others at our table had The Pig burger, and grilled Mahi, and all were happy with their choices. I had a side of the fresh mango salad, which was a treat. The place has been open for decades, and the signs and wall ornaments reflect it, just a fun place with the most attentive servers you'll ever find. I'll be recommending Jerry's to everyone i know. I know my review posts are bordering on too many but I haveta keep reporting on how consistently great what we order here is. As always I get a fried grouper sandwich with three fried shrimp added to the sandwich. Anne gets the fried grouper fingers and onion rings. Absolute perfection. I love that the sandwich comes on a soft hamburger bun so you don't have to deal with a hard crusted roll like on a Po Boy. I add one serving of tartar sauce to the sandwich. I order fries, not because I want fries, but because I need a carrier for Jerry's dressing. Anne's grouper fingers were perfectly fried as were the onion rings. If you want a hoot ask Grok if it has the recipe for Jerry's dressing. It doesn't as the secret has been carefully preserved for all these years. But the response is so great. Grok knows stuff. I have not looked at a menu for a while now as we know what we want. But I noticed today that the printed menu is apparently new and appears to include a way upscaled game in its offerings. First time here for my wife and I. The teamwork exhibited by Michael and all the staff is impressive! My wife was in the restaurant business for 25 years and she pointed out how well they all worked together in providing excellent service. We had the grouper fingers which were delicious. My wife almost didn't want to eat her very good fries with gravy because the grouper was so good. I had the mullet which was quite good also. Good vintage atmosphere. I was very eager to try this place based on years in service. Unfortunately it was not as much as I'd hyped it up to be. The decor is very cute and the place is very clean. The cheeseburger had great taste and was great value for the cost. The green beans and greens fell flat. The fried green tomatoes were piously frozen. They were soggy inside and you could see the doughy crust. Funny that it was the worst thing we had, and the most expensive. It was a 1st and last time for us. Went here for lunch. The staff was so friendly and kind. They let us try their signature crackers, pickles and signature sauce. It sounds weird but it was delicious. Cheap, frozen food with nice service in a quaint diner. Not expensive, but not worth it either. I got the fish and shrimp fried combo. The grouper was terrible. Mushy and kind of old tasting. Very obviously frozen, and very unpleasant to eat. The rest was just bland. The shrimp had no flavor, tasted like those battered shrimp they sell in supermarket frozen aisles, and oddly had the tails covered in batter. Nothing special about the French fries either - also the same you would find in the frozen aisle. Same with the hush puppies - bland and clearly made weeks in advance. And the Cole slaw had an odd, kind of old, taste to it. Service was nice. Very friendly people who clearly enjoy working here and have dedicated customers who love to come here because people love diners. Cash only - they have an ATM in the front. Got a shrimp sandwich and mullet sandwich for my husband along with fried mushrooms... the shrimp sandwich was THE WORST I've had ... ever! Jerry's Drive In is a Pensacola institution. And I'm not just saying that it's super popular and trendy. I think it has literally been here since the beginning of time. And for good reason, too. Great location. Solid food. Nice service. It's just good. This is another one of those Pensacola places that has funny little signs and antique Coke signs and college football signs everywhere. Like an indoor flea market, in a way. They also are cash only. So show up with your cash, or you'll have to use that ATM in the vestibule, and that fee is harsh. Once you order at the counter, you get your number and find your table. Cozy booths and a nice long bar top. They bring your food and drink out to your when it's ready. This most recent time I came, I ordered the sweet tea. Living in Orlando for so long now, I forgot just how irresponsible the South is with how much sugar they put in their tea. I have missed it so. And then I ordered my usual, the only thing I have ever ordered here, the one, the only, the Mullet Sandwich (with Tartar). People think that mullet is a garbage fish, but they are wrong. It is delicious. It is my second favorite fish of all time, after catfish, of course. Jerry fries it up in a light batter, throws it on a bun with some tartar, and serves it up nice and fresh. I have been hunting for an amazing chocolate malt. Stopped in and ordered fried chicken livers and a malt to go. Livers were golden, crispy and really good although pretty greasy so this was a one time taste test. Malt was not very malty at all. Fine flavor for a chocolate shake. Staff were all very nice. I have vivid memories of packing into Jerry's with my family on a loud and busy Saturday night, with every inch of the walls decorated and sports on the TV. I haven't been to Jerry's in about three years. Today, I walked into a different restaurant. Almost empty, quiet, more spacious, and without that Old Pensacola charm. Instead of having an actual server take your order from start to finish, you're handed a menu and told to come back up to the counter to order. What??? Not only does this lessen your customer experience, I was stressed about how much to tip... at first, I didn't want to tip at all. Then, as we were given drinks and food, I felt bad about not tipping because the entire staff was quite helpful. Please fix this because a confused customer is not a customer at ease. And an uncomfortable customer does not tip well. People might say they don't have a waitstaff because of COVID. But they have about 7 employees milling about, so that shouldn't be an issue. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but it was distracting in a way that hindered my dining experience. Pickles and crackers used to be nicely presented on a plate with a bowl of pickles. Today, I received a plastic ramekin half filled with picked juice and maybe a total of 6 pickles, as well as a sleeve of crackers. Not cool. Fries also lacked their usual crispiness. Banana chocolate milkshake was less thick and creamy as before. After each sip I was left wanting more banana. I am very happy to say that the burger was just as phenomenal as ever. Crispy edges and juicy interior with a nice cheese melt. I still think this is the most iconic and satisfying burger in Pensacola. Luckily, my experience was also saved by the illustrious Jerry's secret sauce, which pairs perfect with fries, burgers, crackers, and just about anything else on their menu. Why do people enjoy old-fashioned restaurants and mom and pop shops? I would say that, primarily, people love to enter into a place that looks and feels the same every single time. Childhood nostalgia evokes a time when people were not burdened by mortgages and bills, but instead enjoyed the simple pleasure of rolling a couple quarters into a pinball or Galaga machine (BOTH OF WHICH ARE NOW GONE). People crave something to remain the same amidst Time's destructive power. Walking into Jerry's today was not the same experience I had time and again as a child. I am sure that they have struggled to remain the same because of the negative impact of COVID and other economic obstacles. But please do your best to return to normal. Heard good things about Jerry's so we tried it out. Nothing there is homemade except some soups, ranch dressing and maybe a couple of other items. The entrees are not home made. I was told by the waiter that the hamburger steak is hand pattied there, but you could tell it was a frozen hamburger patty. None of their deserts are homemade. I grew up coming here and came back a few years ago and the food was just as good as before until I came back today. The service was awful and no one payed attention to you. Everyone was very rude when we did ask questions about the new changes. The food itself was disgusting. I got a milkshake which tasted spoiled and a cheeseburger which just simply wasn't as good as before. I also had the onion rings which were severely undercooked. The new ambiance wasn't good either.
