Two stars b/c I'm hopeful. One star if I'm honest. Cocktails were great and we were off to a strong start. Then was informed they were out of one of the spreads for the sampler and refused any substitutions. Pulled lamb Gyro was a a soft taco filled with dry lamb meat, no tzatziki, tomato or lettuce. Very little added after sending back! Lemon chicken soup was ok. Octopus with olives and capers appetizer was swimming in what seemed to be warmed house Greek salad dressing. Heard salmon was good. In need of some lunch, my friends and I stumble upon Ji-Roz via Yelp. With its ratings, we think we might give it a shot and have some Greek food that day. Entering the restaurant, there are no other customers besides us. This is strange, but insignificant. We're here to eat. As we look around, we are quickly greeted by a kind waiter who takes to seating us in no time. The atmosphere was exquisite, and the mood fantastic. Amazed by the endless choices on the menu, I order a vegetable gyro with a side of fries. Both my friends get the same thing, burgers topped with cheese. Served. With. Fries. Important, but I'll explain later. After the waiter places our orders, we wait. and wait. and wait. Several water refills later, the food arrives! Now, the real evaluation begins. Where to begin?Ah- the fries.. the first thing we notice is the fries, and how they are cooked. Inconsistent is hardly accurate. One plate perfectly seasoned and cooked fries, another average, and the last burnt. Though they both ordered burgers, they were given different cheese quantities. However, their taste sort-of made up for any inconveniences with cheese. Moreover, my vegetable gyro was really good! Balanced, seasoned well, and filling. Three stars is a very generous rating, considering our experience with the fries. I made sure to insert a photo to emphasize that there is no exaggeration when they are described as, "burnt." I'd suggest paying attention to the lower star reviews, but it is the restaurant that REALLY needs to pay attention to these. My wife and I visited for Sunday brunch and were really disappointed with the food and service but this was very frustrating considering the obvious potential that is evident. First, the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous - really one of the nicest commercial spaces in Greenville. The design is fabulous including a bona fide open kitchen with wood fired grill/oven and an exquisite little bar area with rustic wooden dropped ceiling that creates a beautiful, intimate space within the industrial bones of the room. The bar even has the thoughtful edition of charging outlets. Ji-Roz really presents like a sophisticated little restaurant that would not be out of place in any European capital. The menu looked very good - a selection of innovative brunch dishes, sandwiches and salads plus what sounded like perfect small plates; grilled octopus and calamari, cheese, etc plus a charcuterie option (charcuterie is so hot right now...).However, the product being delivered falls far short of this potential. For one thing, their small plates are VERY small. Our $10 plate of grilled calamari consisted of literally about 10 small pieces of nice grilled and reasonably tasty squid sitting on top of some wilted lettuce with 2 small lemon pieces. I honestly think it was the smallest serving of food I've ever received and far far below any small plate/tapas portion I've had anywhere here/Europe. This is just insulting to the diner. I noticed another reviewer posted a photo of their similar octopus plate. Ji-Roz needs to immediately triple up the portion of these plates. Also while the real wood fire cooking produces a nice char, these were a bit undercooked and seemed to be completely unseasoned. They would have greatly benefited from some marinade, at least salt, pepper and some oregano or something. This was a common complaint we had with all our food. Greek cuisine, like Cuban cuisine, is actually pretty bland -at least a lot more bland than people think but still basic seasoning, some fresh herbs, etc are part of it. And BTW, no salt/pepper on the table. Our entrees were also underwhelming. My wife got the grilled cheese w/ sausage and eggs. This came on a hot plate like fajitas (?!). She specifically requested over-medium eggs to ensure a liquid yolk but by the time she got to them, one had a fully cooked yolk from the extra heat. Just dumb. The sausage was two tiny thumb sized pieces, cut on an angle even to be that much smaller - again just an insult to the diner. I got the Greek salad with lamb meat. As they point out this is not traditional gyro Turkish Doner kebab (which was somewhat insultingly described as "processed" by the waitress) but actual braised/grilled meat - lamb, chicken or pork. Frankly, a real lamb/beef Doner would have been better. The lamb was nice quality - basically pulled shreds from a roasted piece of meat - but seemed to be unseasoned and was quite bland. The rest of the salad was good quality - nice greens and olives - and two modest chunks of very good quality feta cheese. I will say, they know their feta and have a good supplier. The size was small but not insultingly so. I'd order this again, hopefully larger and with some marinated, herb crusted grilled lamb. The real kick in the head was the supposedly wonderful "rustic" house bread. I believe my wife's entree was supposed to come with bread. She didn't get it at first but the server asked and brought out a basket with a couple of pieces. It was just horrible, dry thin-sliced dense bread - like sandwich bread - and one of the pieces was completely stale with a totally dried crust on one side (?). For one thing, the basic product was nothing like you would expect - i.,e some robust crusty, yeasty bread and then it was just another real insult to be served this dried out crap; without any butter or EVOO. It was just odd and my wife couldn't help asking our server what she was supposed to do with it. Just made no sense. Of course, there should be a bottle of EVOO and sea salt/pepper on every table to begin with and why not include a dish of tzatziki with these kinds of entrees and bread? So...really frustrating. The potential here is great. It would just take a few tweaks to bring things up to speed and then I'd patronize this place regularly. Not sure what is up with the bizarrely small portions and lack of proper seasoning. The management may even have some false fantasy about "health"? We - and an increasing # of patrons - actually eat low carb high fat. I insist that a meal contains real human nutrition and we definitely walked out of Ji-Roz far below that standard. So easy to up the serving of real food - seafood, meat and cheese protein. We'll perhaps give them another chance for dinner. If they can address some of these issues Ji-Roz could be a real success and a standout in the Greenville scene. read more

I hate to write negative reviews, but this is definitely the worst Greek food experience I've ever had and just a bad experience in general. I don't know if a Monday night is just not the night to go but I am definitely not going to try my luck again. I love gyros and was super excited to try theirs. However, when I tried to order the lamb gyros I was told they were out. We decided to try the pork gyros instead, but I was very disappointed. We also ordered the saganaki, spanikopita, and dolmades. The saganaki came out first and the cheese was nice. However, I was expecting some sort of crusty or toasted bread to go with it and what came was neither of those, which was strange. The dolmades came next, but when I bit into them the rice was crunchy. I am not sure if was raw or stale, although I suspect the latter. The flavor was weird on them as well and we had to send them back to the kitchen. We did not order anything else as a substitute. The pork gyro and spanikopita came out together. The spanikopita filling was good, but the phyllo was too thick and was not as crisp as traditional phyllo should be. However, the portion was ridiculously small for the price we paid. The pork gyro meat was tender and the gyro itself had a nice smokey flavor, but overall the gyro was very bland. It lacked salt and seasoning in general. Again, the portion was very small for the price and I was surprised it did not come with feta on the gyro. The tzatziki sauce was a little runny, very tart yogurt flavor (like they used non-fat yogurt), and also was pretty bland. Because we had some issues with our meal, our waiter offered us a free dessert. Even the shredded phyllo with dessert was soggy and stale. The manager did not even offer to stop by our table to talk to us, nor did we bother asking for him or her. I've never so much just wanted to pay our bill and leave. On a positive note, our waiter was the only decent part of our experience. I could tell that he was frustrated on our behalf and none of the experience was his fault. I honestly felt bad that he could tell how frustrated we were. I have had some great Greek food with plentiful portions for under $15 for two people, so it was even more frustrating to pay more than $30 + tip for small, bland portions for the two of us and to leave there hungry. I sincerely hope that other people have much better experiences than we did. However, there seem to be some major issues in the kitchen. I will not be back. read more

We dropped in for Sunday brunch and were absolutely wow'ed by the space - they've done an amazing and beautiful job here! That is, except for the dying and cobwebby (!) rosemary plants located directly next to where we sat. Cobwebs on your plants, and on ANYTHING in your restaurant, is really off putting. These need to be removed, pronto. But this was a minor footnote, only made major by our location. In general, the space is beautiful with a lot of attention to detail. Whoever designed this space - I would hire them. Gorgeous. Ordering off their brunch menu, the prices seemed slightly higher than average, and then when the food came, they seemed much too high! Bottom line: portions need to increase by at least 50% or prices need to come down by 1/3. I see other reviewers have the same criticism. We ordered the wood fired calamari appetizer which was nicely done and had a nice flavor, but the size was TINY and presentation on top of a bunch of lettuce (to make it look like a real quantity of food?) was off. I suggest a plain plate with a sprig or two of flat leaf parsley. Let the fish be the star, even presentation-wise! I got the cheese and eggs and was shocked at the small portion, and that it was served on a sizzling platter, so it was too hot to eat, and my over easy eggs continued to cook, to a hard yolk. Yuck. The "sausage" it came with was one small nub of sausage, sliced in half. This dish was crazy small. And, it was served with what sounded luscious - house-made artisinal bread -but which was just plain, dense bread, with no fluffiness or airiness like fresh bread should have, and which was stale on one side. AND, the bread is served alone, dry, with no accompaniments. I asked about this later and was told I could have something to top it with "if I asked." ?! Our server wasn't around often enough for this to be feasible, and this is dumb, to put the burden on the patron of how to avoid eating the (stale) bread dry. I left hungry, which should not happen. My partner had a gyro salad, which had great flavor but again, was too small for the price. It was somewhat underseasoned, and then, you must request salt and pepper specifically as none is provided on the tables. It's a style thing, I think, to project that your food is already "perfectly seasoned" and therefore not provide salt and pepper on the tables, but this is a mistake. Peoples' palates vary. Your servers are too busy doing other things to be able to bring us S&P. Just put it out on the tables, please. This place has a lot going for it in terms of decor and elements of their food, which seems to be freshly made with attention to authentic Greek flavors and traditions. I hope they'll take the constructive criticisms (of myself and other reviewers) to heart, because with some tweaks, this could become a really popular destination. As it stands now, though, it won't be added to our dining rotation. If we hear of changes or improvements, we will try it again, though. read more

I ordered bitesquad from here the other day. We ordered the common gyro and that was the only good thing about our experience. Not sure if it was worth the $12 though. We also ordered the lentil salad with a side of briam. We unfortunately did not receive the briam and the lentil salad was the saddest looking salad I've ever seen. A salad also being $12 should at least cover the bottom of the styrofoam tray and probably shouldn't have so many wilted greens in it. We were visiting a friend who lives at Main & Stone (the apartments above Ji-Roz) and decided to pop in for a drink. The Yelp iPhone app mistakenly says that they are only open on Monday & Tuesdays, but they are actually open Monday - Saturday. This was my first time in one of the businesses in the new North Main complex. The decor is open, airy and comfortable, with a large bar area and partial open kitchen. I was surprised at how much parking they tucked in the middle of the complex, so it's easy to park and get to the businesses. The menu is Greek themed, and encourages sharing, so we got an order of dolmades and a gyro sandwich to split. The portion size for the dolmades was small for the price. The Avgolemono sauce was under seasoned to the point of being flavorless...none of the bright lemony flavor I would expect from Avgolemono sauce. The filling of the dolmades was also bland and under seasoned. I feel like they spent more time on the presentation (micro greens and Avgolemono 'foam') than they did on flavor. On we go to the lamb gyro. The meat looked shredded, more like pulled pork than rotisserie gyro meat. Since the kitchen is only partially open, I could not see wheee the meat came from. As with the dolmades, the gyro meat and filling suffered from a severe lack of salt/seasoning. They were skimpy on the tzatziki sauce, and put a couple of French fries into the sandwich in place of crunchy vegetables. I removed the French fries before tasting the sandwich, which left me with more bread than fillings. Kudos on those French fries, though...they were the only highlight of the meal (and the only well seasoned component). read more

I grew up in Chicago where there's a gyro joint on every corner and one more mid way between. They all had one or two spits from which the meat was carved. There's a distinct look when the meat is shaved off one of these things. I saw a spit at Jiroz... but it had nothing on it. The meat on my gyro looked pretty similar to the pre-packaged stuff you get when the joint doesn't carve their own The consistency also was more chewy than what I'm used to. Hard to believe but I'm fairly certain the meat was the pre-packaged stuff tossed on the griddle to crisp up the edges a bit - shameful for a place that's named themselves as such. Really, really disappointed in this place. The decor looks very much like a franchise, nothing else we had as a side was particularly good. This was my first visit to Ji-Roz and I will be returning. They have a good happy hour and the drinks are good! My friend had the cherry juice with vodka, but found out later it was double the price of my Cuba Libra. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Unique Greek dishes are offered and are good. This place was phenomenal! Upon arriving we were greeting and seated by John who is the owner and introduced himself as such. This place is small but the atmosphere is very cozy and inviting. The wait staff is very pleasant and friendly. The food is outstanding. We ordered the saganaki, feta balls and calamari, the lamb noodle dish (no idea what it's called but it's delicious). We capped off our meal with some baklava and the chocolate coconut cake. A definite must try. The owner is extremely attentive and is on top of everything. We will absolutely be back. read more

Not impressed, unfortunately, was really hoping for good things. Ordered the Feta balls, they were SO salty, no honey taste to be found, didn't eat them after the first 2 bites. Gyro was all meat and dry, 3 little dice of tomato, the sauce was practically dry paste. I called ahead to make sure i could watch a certain football game . I asked the bartender if he would change the channel . He replied with a laugh , yeah , when I get a minute . After he stood around for a while , I asked again . He acted perturbed and very quickly went through some channels and couldn't find it . I told him what channel it was and he said he didn't have that channel . So , when some of the folks I was meeting there came in , I told them they would not show the game we wanted to see . We all left and I text the others to tell them to meet us elsewhere . But , what really makes me mad is after we all left , another group came in and requested the same game . This place was great. The Octopus is by far the best I've had anywhere. Give it a try. The saganaki flaming cheese is always a good choice as well and we loved it. This place is beyond fantastic. The only downfall is that we had a 30 minute wait however now after having finished my meal I can confidently say I this place is worth an hour and a half wait. We started with the saganaki flambayed at the table to cheers of "OOPA!!!" from the manager as well as the other patrons. We also ordered the spanakopita which can only be described as life affirming. For the main course I had the lamb gyro which was beautiful in it's simplicity too few restaurant any more serve quality meat that is not over burdened with seasoning with this fresh lamb actually taste the meat which was refreshing to say the least. After sample the kabobs ordered by the rest of my party I feel I can confidently say that this restaurant is truly deserving of a 5-star review as it has become my new favorite restaurant in Greenville. Besides the food the atmosphere is great and the service received from our waitress Virginia was top notch. Do yourself a favor and check it. Lived right next door to this place so I really wanted it to be good. But I have come for dinner and Sunday brunch and I give up on this place. Very underwhelming, bland food. I have had MUCH better gyros from a food truck or fast food restaurant for half the price. The salad is not filling and is basically just a bell pepper chopped into quarters with three small tomatoes and some cucumber. The pancakes are 9$ - for two dry bland pancakes. The scrambled fires are flavorless. Have come here with 8 people so far - not one person was impressed and most left hungry. The service was less than impressive as well - but I will cut some slack there since it was their first few weeks of being open. read more

Oh my God. Greenville has too many Greek places that lack character. This place is fantastic. Great food. Really really interesting dishes that are well plated. We went all the way and tried a Greek red wine which was a first for everyone at the table. It was also very good and paired well with the meal. We skipped desert but did so because we enjoyed multiple appetizers. The ambiance of the restaurant was also a plus. You can see the inner working of the kitchen from the table. Great new place! The green beans are a must. The charcuterie was great, so many creative and delicious flavors! Alexa (sous chef) came and explained what each thing on the board was and told us how she created each item. So cool! Fun atmosphere and excellent service. Wow! What a fantastic find! We had heard a good deal about this place and were anxious to try it out! My husband and I came for lunch on a Saturday around 2:00. Even at this time, it was full and the service was fabulous. We had a variety of dishes all better than the next. I really wanted to love this place. Many of the reviews sounded so positive. But I just didn't. I got the gyro, which had a lot of meat but it was very dry with little else inside. There are five places in Greenville with better gyro. The dolmades can't compare to even the ones served at the annual Greek festival. The salmon was ok but served with a tiny amount of veg. Just not worth the price. But go and judge for yourself. read more
