Anyway, I ordered the club sandwich - they actually have three versions, two are not called out on the menu. The menu lists the traditional turkey and bacon version. Also offered is the Colorado version with ham and bacon. There is a version that is hamburger patty and bacon. I tried the Colorado. Tasty. The sister pretty much sticks to the patty melt. Always a good choice. Service was very good. Drink refills were fine. There is a lot of seating in this one. They also counter seating. Go there. read more

I've been eating at this Jim's location for something like 20 years (my grandfather lives a mile or so away), but I hadn't been in a while so had never reviewed it! But after visiting again this past weekend, it's time for a review! So - reminder - this review might be affected by a bit of nostalgia. But the truth is that I like Jim's. I like that it looks the same as it's looked for decades. It's retained all its vintage diner decor and vibes - the long bar with the bright red barstools, the booths for two, even the carpeting. It maintains the classic diner customer service - when you walk in, you feel like you're at home. And then there's that huge menu. This past visit, I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast (when home in Texas...), which was a Texas sized amount of food (a huge portion of chicken fried steak with two eggs, hashbrowns, and toast with butter and jam). It was also delicious. But Jim's has a large menu of tons of options that are exactly what I want at a diner - breakfast, Tex-Mex, sandwiches, burgers, and a thousand other things. I have only been to Jim's once before today and it was in Austin after a night of partying and I don't even remember what I ordered. Fast forward a million years and I'm in San Antonio, home if the OG Jim's! This i didn't know. It's described as similar to Denny's. I really wanted to like it, but I didn't. The good: our server in training was phenomenal. He was sweet and patient. He gave us time and reviewed our order and when he missed a couple questions, he promptly returned to remedy it. The food came out quickly which was also a plus. The negative was the food. I ordered scrambled eggs with toast, hash brown, and bacon. Eggs and toast is one of my favorite things. It's simple and can be amazing (see Proud Mary). The eggs were way overdone, not gray, but dry. The toast was not toasty. It was a 2 on a 1-5 bread to toast scale. Bread and dry eggs isn't too good, unless maybe there was a ton of butter or cheese or something. The bacon and hash browns were already just dry. I don't even know how that happens unless maybe food just sits there for hours. Also, watch your soda refills because they aren't free. read more

Jim's Restaurant holds a special place in our family tradition. Every time we travel and fly out of the airport, we make it a point to stop by this location for breakfast or lunch after checking in. It's our little pre-travel ritual and it never disappoints. This time, we weren't heading out of town. We just wanted some good food and that same friendly service we've come to love. I had been seriously craving chicken and waffles, and Jim's delivered! It hit the spot perfectly! It was actually my mom's first time trying them, and she ended up loving them too. An honorable mention goes to the tortilla soup! 10 out of 10. Flavorful, comforting, and one of the best I've had at a diner-style spot. Definitely worth ordering if you haven't tried it yet!!! Finally tried Jim's and I'm glad we made it there. It's classic diner vibes with a couple extra interesting menu items. We had the steak and eggs plate and the tortilla soup. The breakfast plates come with your choice of toast and potatoes. It was decent steak for the place and price. The soup was fantastic. The service is incredibly fast and I'm eager to see if they return to 24 hours. read more

I hate giving a low rating.. The waitress was awesome. The food was OK but when I got my plate, it was so lukewarm. The hashbrowns weren't even warm.. But I think the most important thing is the attentiveness of getting the plates out. I observed that the plates are sitting out on those hot plates way too long and the waitresses are not getting them out early enough. Jim's is a San Antonio treasure that started over 70 years ago by the original Jim when it was called Frontier Burger. It's a go to for San Antonians for any meal of the day. I've had many a group meeting here sometimes doing business up to 1.5 hours and Jim's has never put a limit on time or made us seem unwelcome. Also Great coffee. Today I ordered a Frontier cheeseburger with fries. Good patty overall good burger. Fries were hot and crisp. My friend ordered a club sandwich which also came with fries. I've tried the club and they make a good one. They have an assortment of pies to include lemon meringue, seasonal strawberry as well as other icebox pies and traditional flavors. I Couldn't resist the apple pie. And be generous with tipping, these servers work hard and rely on tips to make a living. read more

I'm very disappointed with these Jim's locations closing since I've been coming since I was a child and remember attending with friends that have moved away and family and other loved ones that are no longer on this earth. Diner food, but comfort food. I've been going to Jim's for several years now, but this location was just middle of the road. The restaurant was clean and had enough space to accommodate our large group of ten people, but someone's order was lost in the process and was brought out halfway through everyone else's meal. Fortunately several of us ordered the same thing as her and we cobbled together a hefty plate for her to eat before hers was basically brought out to go. The waitress did her best and was super kind and apologetic, it just sucked that someone's meal was left out, especially when we're all the type of people to wait to eat until everyone has their food. A lot of us were also missing our sides or bread and they were eventually brought out well into the meal like they had forgotten to make them. I went with one of my usual orders and chose the Chicken Tender Basket with Cream Gravy, Mashed Potatoes, and a Dinner Roll. I'd learned my lesson at the last Jim's and opted for the Dinner Roll instead of the Texas Toast with ungodly and chemically tasting butter which we ended up referring to as 'yellow' as it did not taste like butter in the slightest. Definitely dodged a bullet as that same neon 'yellow' appeared in the Texas Toast of those who were unaware of the apparently new 'butter' standard. My Dinner Roll was nothing special but yummy and soft all the same, it just did show up several minutes into the meal as mentioned before with a lot of the other sides and breads. My Mashed Potatoes were bland and didn't quite taste like potatoes. What they tasted like I'm not sure, all I know is that I've had instant potatoes better than what I was served here. The Cream Gravy really did all of the heavy lifting on the few bites I took of this side. My Chicken Tenders were massive and there were entirely too many for one person to eat alone, which helped in the missing meal debacle; several of us could have taken home leftovers if we wanted to. The breading was crunchy, the chicken was moist, but again, the seasoning just missed the mark compared to what I've had in the recent past. My fiancé ordered the Spaghetti and I WISH I had ordered it too. It was nothing incredibly special, but compared to my meal it really seemed that way. The noodles were just so-so and almost tasteless, but really absorbed the flavor of the meat sauce. The meat sauce was really yummy and the star out of both of our meals, and the Parmesan cheese just made it even better. He was one of the ones stuck with the 'yellow' adorned Texas Toasts and I ended up sharing my Dinner Roll with him. The roll worked significantly better with the Spaghetti, but then again ANYTHING other than the 'yellow' was a step up. I'm not sure if there's just been a recent drop in quality across the board for all Jim's Restaurants, but I was still pretty disappointed with the food and felt slightly ill afterwards. I'm giving this one three stars despite all the negative because everything was super clean, our waitress was super patient and polite in waiting for some of the latecomers in our group totrickling in, and I have in fact been to worse locations. Took the kids to Jim's for breakfast on Sunday and had a good time. The ambience is what you expect, not much, but for many that is the allure here. Just a classic diner type spot. The food was decent and came out quickly. The prices were reasonable and attractive enough to come back and try again. I was a little disappointed with being charged four dollars for a side of bacon that we were not told was an up charge but it was good either way. The service is what stands out here. They were quick, professional and attentive. My kids even noticed how good they were. read more

I have eaten at Jim's for years. I love Jim's. However, this time was just not getting it done. Service was wonderful, as usual, as expected. The restaurant was in a nice googie architecture building. Fun to see for certain. It is loud, but that is what it is. The food was mostly good and hot. I never thought you could mess up pancakes, but they did it. They were cooked correctly, just did not taste like normal pancakes. I'm a die-hard Jim's fan. I love diners and diner fare and being in a laid-back setting, and Jim's always delivers. Is it the most glamorous place? Not by a long shot! But it's an SA institution that offers a wide variety of food that's pretty good and warm, friendly service. My go-to is the chicken salad plate, which comes with a side platter of crackers. It's a super refreshing meal and perfect for when it starts warming up outside. I hardly ever deviate from this option, but my husband likes to try new things all the time. His favorites include the chop steak dinner, chicken fried steak breakfast, sampler basket, and their apple pie with cinnamon ice cream. We have patronized this location for years. Never have we been completely ignored. We seated ourselves in a booth close to the front. It was long after the lunch hour and not many people in there. One server running to the tables ahead of us and behind. Passed by us 3 times and never said a thing.. a " be right with you" would have gone a long way and we might have been willing to wait. My family has been coming to Jim's on Broadway/410 for many years. Ever since the pandemic, they've lost their mojo for sure. The last time we were there (weekend), was the last time we'll ever be there. My husband had ordered a pancake (one) to go with his meal. The server agreed jovially saying that everyone should have a pancake with their meals, and we all laughed. The food came, and there was no pancake. When we reminded him of it, he said, "Oh, I forgot. Sorry, I'll put it in." We began our meal, and after we were almost done, no pancake. So we reminded him--this tall, white guy with glasses, light hair and a dad bod who also fancies himself to be a Spanish-speaker. He told us he'd look into what happened to the pancake. After a while he went to man the cash register. Having had enough, I got up and asked him about the whereabouts of the pancake. Oh, he said, they're working on it. I was fuming for I had seen the pancake sitting under lights by the cooks. Instead of saying more, I went and sat down. Eventually he brought the pancake and we asked for a box so that we could take it home. He apologized for the lack of service blaming the cooks, his position (server, host, cash register). However, he didn't mention all the laughing and talking he had done with the rest of the staff to pass time, I suppose. When I went to pay, I did not tip him. He said, "Have the day you deserve." I said nothing in return. I should've said, "You too." But God bless his little heart, it must suck to work at Jim's on Broadway and 410 post-pandemic. read more

This was only my second time here. This is a San Antonio institution. I got off late one night about 9 and tried this location, which is on Broadway at 410. I was craving eggs and chicken fried steak and they sure did deliver. My over medium eggs were perfect, especially when I allowed my toast to swim in that beautiful yellow gold. The chicken-fried steak was tender and perfectly battered. The white gravy was creamy and rich with no flour taste whatsoever. Not a big fan of this app, but I downloaded it just to rate this place. For starters, waitress had no manners what so ever and had no personality at all. On top of that, pancakes tasted like butt and Moms bacon tasted like burnt marshmallows. Also, everything was burnt, bread, bacon, pancakes, everything. Server took 30 minutes to bring me my second drink after coming to our table 5 times. I usually give places a break because of COVID, but this restaurant deserves anything but that. Wasn't pleased with the visit. Even though the food was decent, the staff left much to be desired. From the moment my family walked in the door to the time the check was paid - not once did we feel welcomed. Whether it was intentional or not - I could care less. Had it not been so late and my kids not so hungry - I'd have gladly turned around and walked out... I digress. The food wasn't bad. Had a "Denny's" feel to it but with a twist of less commercial and more family kitchen cooking. The grits though were like wet sand in a dish. Not edible. Eggs - cooked perfect from the start, so a major plus (I prefer mine over medium). Coffee was fresh as well - no bitter taste at all. Overall not too bad. Might visit again when in the area. George McCrae's Rock your Baby was playing when we walked in and set the right mood today. Then an ininterrupted series of old songs made the diner feel like a pulp fiction escapade that had me wondering if this was all staged. Seriously, even the employees here had exagerrated features like marionettes and were all so attentive, helping each other to make sure customers are all taken care of. A solid, no frills breakfast joint. We stopped here on the way to the airport for a quick bite. The restaurant is self-seating, but our table/seat ended up being not thoroughly wiped down (syrup residue). Our waitress was super nice and had some wet wipes in her apron to give us. The food came out in a timely manner and was served hot. We had plenty of syrup and ketchup at our table. We are from San Antonio & used to love eating there. We moved away and came back this weekend to see our kids. Service sucked! Food was horrible and they served my husband food stained tortillas in the warmer with his plate! When it was brought to their attention, the black cashier girl said she was aware of the used tortillas being put in the warmer, that she saw them remove food from the taco & just threw it in container that was served to us, but said nothing to them.This made it worse! That a worker actually admitted to seeing it done and kept her mouth shut. Then, all they said was "pay up your $56 bill you owe and we will let the manager know about what happened." Very tacky! All they said was there had been many, many complaints all week about food & service and that I was not only one complaining, but that I still had to pay my full bill. Then they trying to say they deducted the tortillas from the bill, I told them they came with the meal chosen & we should've not been charged and black girl & Hispanic lady said, "oh yes, you're right."
