Off night tonight at Jim's. After sea world we decided to have a late dinner and we found out they the waitress that a new cook was being trained. This is why our chicken was raw and the waffle was cold. They did remake it and it took an extra 10 minutes. The broiled chicken was good but the mashed potatoes were cold and the brown gravy was super salty. The chicken fried steak was fried well but the cream gravy was cold as they forgot to warm it. Over easy eggs were good. The biscuits were slightly cold as the waitress said they were in the fridge while they cleaned the biscuit tray. The grits were thick like drywall putty so I swapped for hash browns. They were served undercooked. There needs to be a quality control system in place when new cooks are being trained. Stall walls, and floors were in rough shape. If I'd gone in before ordering there a good chance I would have left without ordering Sorry Jim's. Best diner in San Antonio! Hubby's fav is Jim's number one. I go for the enchiladas and a cup of tortilla soup. Best in town! And the cheese soup is fabulous. Used to be open all night, since Covid, not open past 8ish. The chili on the enchiladas is awesome... no beans and tender shredded beef. Pass on the rice and beans get some onion rings and a salad instead. Breakfast is good too. Jim's is a San Antonio Icon! read more

Two words. STEAK & EGGS. 'Nuff said. Sunny side up eggs were cooked to perfection. Mix those golden yolks with a bite of tender steak and biscuits and gravy and you're in heaven. Service was insulting! On Friday night, 1/31/25, we were seated and left alone for 20 minutes!! We stood up to see if anyone could see us. There was a guy with AirPods who came out of the kitchen but he never saw us, and the lady who sat us never checked on us, and passed by us to sit someone else down. Called in to ask how long the wait was and told about 15 mins for a table of six. After more than half an hour of wait, we were put into two separate booths, when asked how much longer. Ordered breakfast with coffee, came with a cup with lipstick on it, asked to replace the cup was given a shabbier coffee spilled cup. It was replaced with a cleaner one. I wouldn't recommend all Jim's, but this one is solid. We've been going to this location for a while for early and late breakfast; dine-in, and carryout. It's better than a Denny's or IHOP (IMO). The coffee here is good, and there are plenty of options on the menu for everyone's taste buds. They also have Senior options for anyone 55 and older. We often come here before out-of-town guests go off on a long road trip in the early morning, or to pick up a carryout order because we are craving a hearty breakfast at home, without all the work. The Chopped Steak Breakfast, Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast, and Texas Two-Step have been some of my favorites. ~TIP: If toast comes with the meal, you can substitute for a yummy pancake! Lastly, we recently noticed they installed partitions on some of the booths. They also had a sign on the door that they are closing a couple of hours early due to short staff, so make sure and check times. read more

So the food at Jim's is very good and the desserts are even better. The service is usually good but they can get busy at the obvious busy times. I feel like the restaurant is clean and kind of like a vintage diner I would have visited as a child in the 80s. I recommend Jim's for down home cooking. read more

What can I say this was a great experience, I asked my mom what she wanted and she said anything but Mexican food, as we always eating the same thing. I saw a Jim's and decided to stop and try them out. Walking in we were greeted and we were sat right away. Our waiter was Albert and he was very friendly and attentive through our whole visit. I am a very picky person when order food and he listened and place my order and the rest of the other orders. Th food cam out exactly how I asked for it and I was truly shock as there seems to always be something wrong with my meal. Albert check in us periodically as he had a lot of other tables but he seem to come when I need to place another order, it did not phase him a bit. On my way it I was really please on how fast the order went in and came out fast. I really wanted a desert but I was to full, these are the differs kind of cakes and pies they had and the all look super duper good. I surly will be going back and already try the desert. Went to the rest rooms and I thought that they would not be to clean due to the amount of people at the restaurant but they were super clean . One of my local faves right in my neighborhood if I want a quick breakfast or burger. I pretty much know the waitstaff and everyone is very friendly. This time I decided to try their daily special for the first time ever. It included an entree, 2 sides, bread and tea for $7.99. You definitely can't beat that price. The selection of the day was chopped steak with mushroom and onion gravy. I chose mashed potatoes, cabbage and Texas toast. The chopped steak seemed like there were a lot of fillers and tasted like fake meat, not my thing. Too soft with a TV Dinner Salisbury Steak like texture. Had breakfast there this past Saturday and it was delightful as expected. I haven't been here in years and we decided on a whim and we were not disappointed. I ordered an oatmeal with fruit and biscuits and my spouse ordered their pancake special. Our server was prompt, friendly and accurate in her order. If you're going to eat at Jim's you know what you're getting every time you sit down. Most Jim's are pretty clean and there's hardly a wait for a table. Food is consistently prepared and as long as you order AMERICAN FOOD, it's not too bad. The burgers are well prepared and I really enjoy the breakfast options. I have to say, the chicken tortilla soup is really good. If you're out late on a weekend or want to grab breakfast before work, it's a great place to Visit. I would just like to say the manager who was on duty that night was phenomenal. My boyfriend walked in just wanted some pie was going to pay eight dollars a piece for pie and then realized he could get a whole pie for $16 the strawberry pie that we wanted was not available however, the manager was able to go back and make the pie within about 5 to 10 minutes. He actually gave us an extra piece of chocolate cream pie, which was delicious and told my boyfriend that he had taught the staff a valuable lesson about being able to make a strawberry pie very quickly. I know it sounds silly but the manager was just awesome. He even walked my boyfriend to the car. read more
