Went JJ's because I was hearing that it was possibly a better breakfast spot than Crossroads Diner. While I disagree that it is better than Crossroads, it is definitely a pretty awesome breakfast joint. We ordered the migas and chocolate chip pancakes. Both were extremely large portions so make sure to come hungry or share a plate. The prices here are reasonable and the service was great. I believe they even offer a 10% discount for Yelp check-ins. Definitely a good spot to try if you are in the Lake Highlands area. read more

I can't write an honest review about the food because we left without ordering. We felt uncomfortable being rushed. Before I could say what I wanted to drink the waiter was like I'll just bring two waters. I recently moved to Lake Highlands and stopped by JJ's Cafe for lunch after driving by several times. The interior is boring but nice. It's fine for the older crowd, which is okay as I was the youngest customer by at least 20 years. The lunch buffet was sparse and didn't look very appetizing so I passed. I immediately regretted this choice because while the wait staff is very friendly they're also pretty lackadaisical. Instead I ordered the fried chicken salad which took forever to come out. It tasted okay but needed more dressing. I asked for more but it never came out; nor did the waiter came back to my table. After waiting a bit I gave up and ate anyway. In the meantime, literally half the other customers were constantly coughing, hacking or blowing their nose without regard to anyone else around them. It was totally gross; by the end I just wanted to finish my meal and get out. While not the worst dining experience I've ever had by any means, it's definitely not a place to which I'll be returning any time soon. read more

The several times I have had breakfast or lunch here, I've left feeling like it's a crap shoot how you're going to get treated from one visit to the next. Sometimes very warmly and attentively, other times a little as if you're a pain in the ass. This place seems really clique-y and skewed to the over-65 set. I've tried to make pleasant small talk with the owner at check out (dude, en serio, I'm not trying to flirt with you or pick you up, por Dios!) Country Scramble comes with yummy veggies, spicy sausage, and covered with rich tangy cheese. I chose the hashbrowns which were perfectly light, crispy and delish, not greasy at all! I was invited to JJ's Cafe over a year ago for breakfast. The food was fantastic! Had the California Omelette - it was not dry and covered with slices of Avocados, yum! I've been back a half dozen times Sunday morning when my wife gets off work. Order something different almost every time and all but one was great!! Lazy Kitchin Staff! Slow Server! We arrived on Saturday June 28 at 12:20pm. I was surprised to see that the buffet was still full of old breakfast food. The waiter tried to sell me on it but I decided to order a fresh hot breakfast from the menu. Shortly after placing my order, the kitchen staff took the buffet to the kitchen. My meal was cold and old and I am positive that it was served from the old buffet trays. The server was very slow at refilling our drinks also. The restaurant was empty! Came here for the Sunday brunch, which was only $9.99 but offered such a wide variety of food. They had unlimited mimosas (which you pour yourself and can change the ratio of OJ/champagne to your liking), great breakfast food, and a variety of salad and fruits. Overall enjoyed the atmosphere, which was toned down and not loud or busy at all, but there seemed to be fewer servers, and ours came by only 3 times during the whole course to refill my water. Went here after reading an article in The Advocate. Don't know why I even bother reading the recommendations in that magazine. The place is a "reinvented" Chubby's or Luby's at best. Article made it sound like a hip place but it was at most filled with people young at heart. Nothing wrong with that except it means the restaurant is filled with worn out taste buds. I am not being mean, there is scientific proof about that. Anyhow that means the food is worn out too. I took my wife to this place and oh did i regret it. We both had eggs Benedict (californian, and florentine). Mine were pretty much hard boiled. The food was pretty cold, so the hollandaise sauce wasn't pleasant. Anyhow there is an old philosophy that if a restaurant can screw up an egg dish then you should not come back. The owner invited us to come back because they want to improve based on our feedback. I, however, don't want to waste my life teaching a restaurant how to boil an egg. read more

I find that I'm usually craving breakfast when most places aren't serving it. So, it's nice to find places that serve it all day. We had to drop off a friend who lives in the area and we searched on Yelp for somewhere to eat. It was after 1:00 and they weren't busy. We were seated right away and the service was great the entire time we were there. I ordered the Crunch French Toast with eggs and bacon. The eggs were exactly how I asked for them - over medium well. It's probably annoyingly picky but it's not always easily executed. They were just right. The bacon was good but a little too fatty. Probably could have been cooked just a touch longer. The Crunch French Toast was delicious! It's corn flakes with almonds to make the crunch and was very tasty! A little too much exercise for my jaw after a while, but still tasted amazing! We also ordered the breakfast tacos with chorizo and a side of biscuits and gravy just to see what they were like. I'm told the breakfast tacos were really good and the chorizo is the real deal. The salsa was a bit spicy but had a Pace quality to it. The biscuits were yummy - greasy and crispy and didn't even need anything on them! We will definitely return soon and would like to try the buffet sometime. read more

The waiter was completely unhelpful and looked like she was itching for a fight but why fight when social media is there for us to use? We choose to be as diplomatic as possible even thought we didn't have to. We didn't go here with an attitude or ready to argue with the waitstaff. We don't do that!! The problem was because we wanted to switch one of the sides and the waitress didn't want to do that. I think the bone of contention here was because we arrived about 30 minutes before the closing time and she wasn't very happy about that but that was the least of my concerns. As far as the decor is concerned, this place is just average. The breakfast we ordered was horrible but my mum opted to go for the lunch buffet which seemed to enjoy. Finally stopped in to try this neighborhood cafe on a Sunday morning. The menu selection was great so we chose to order from the menu instead of the buffet. I had the feta omelette and my boyfriend had the eggs Benedict. The food came with potatoes o'brian that were delicious. Food came quickly and was on out table in less than 10 minutes. The servers and staff were nice and kept our beverages filled. We plan on coming back to try the brunch buffet that includes mimosas, hot breakfast and lunch items, and cold salads and desserts for around $10. We tried this place for the first time for breakfast this weekend since I saw they had a breakfast buffet. My son and I went in about 9:30 AM on Sunday morning, which one would assume would be prime breakfast time. We were seated in the "dining room" which is a horribly decorated space with institutionally bright florescent lights, dirty stack-able chairs and an ambiance that resembles a seedy river boat casino. The buffet was comically terrible. There were two pancakes in the warmer, one of which was so old it was stiff. The eggs benedict was a disgusting looking mess, ice cold and greasy. The biscuits were literally rock hard. I'm not saying they were stale, they were so hard a knife would not saw through them. .There was a dinner buffet set up (9:30 in the morning?) and that looked equally as wretched. We tried to get a waitresses attention to order something else, but no luck there. After not eating a thing and having to track down 2 different servers we finally got our bill, $22.00 for 2 buffets, coffee and a pop!! Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. I saw they were advertising a seafood night. If they can't cook pancakes, god have mercy on your soul if you try seafood there. read more
