But, the manager or owner who stands over her employees and criticizes everything do in front of their customers is kind of annoying. I understand that she was just trying to ensure the order comes out correctly, but I over heard her talking to one of the employees, and it's that poor ladies 2nd day at work! Cut her some slack, let her learn the menu and what you have to offer and I bet she will do just fine! Will definitely be back, because the food and price is pretty great! I'm guessing an update will append to my prior review. First, I went to their website and saw that they've been serving folks since 1995. I don't know why it says that because a group of buddies and I were coming here in '73-'74. I've never really been a fan, but I was craving something last night and I noticed a blurb on their menu. I ordered a regular bomber with their meatball sauce. It was amazing. I love meatball subs, but they disintegrate so quickly. This is a regular sub, but with chopped meatball sauce. It was the perfect combination. It's not another variation of a Philly cheesesteak. It's not another roll with Italian cold cuts. It's its own thing and I liked it a lot. Long time go to for east coast style subs. Started in early 70's and still going strong. Great subs or bombers as they call them. I usually get a 6" double meat on Italian bread with all the veggies and seasonings. I love them always fresh made right in front of you. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got the opportunity. I walked in at 7:30pm and placed my order. Sat down with my food by 7:35. At 7:40 I am addressed by staff to ensure I know they close at 8:00. At 7:43 the lights were dimmed. At 7:45 I walked out chewing the last of my food. Literally the best sub I've ever tasted. The lady was rude, snarky and senile. The meatball sandwich was on of the worst I've ever had. The bread was soggy and the meat had been assaulted with mounds of Italian seasoning. The place was small, and noone was there which should have been a reflag for me. I tried my lovers 3 or 4 meat sandwich and it tasted like something a 7 year old made in the kitchen. I've been eating at Jo-Ed's for about 120 years. Not really but a good 45 years going all the way back to when they were on Cooper Street. The sandwiches are always PERFECT and the blend of spices that they sprinkle on give it a very distinctive taste that I have loved since I was a teenager. The staff is always friendly, although maybe a little too right wing for me but they do not push their agenda on the customers. Great food with good service. What more could you want? read more

I don't know what happened to Jo Ed's bomber today. And I'm not one to leave a bad review based on one bad visit. But their subs have truly gone down hill. The shop wasn't very clean. I couldn't find a clean table. And literally my 12 inch sub had "MAYBE" four pieces of meat. Very little relish and two pieces of cheese. It was a bread sub. And it's sad because I love this place but the last few times I went here it's been the same way. You have to pay for double meat to even get the regular amount of meat. This 12 inch sub was $9. Which isn't bad but come on. Make it like you used to. This is not how it used to be. read more

I spotted Jo-Ed's the other day while dropping kids off at nearby Camp Thurman. I was excited to find what looked like a legit sub shop but it was too early in the morning to confirm. Thankfully my wife was due to be back in the area later in the week and I'm happy to report that my instincts were correct. The sandwich was delicious, especially with the dill pickle relish which thankfully was not reminiscent of hot dog relish at all. The Italian roll was nice and soft with great seasoning on top. My wife opted for the salad which received high marks as well from her. For those with a big appetite I would recommend doubling up on the meat. And if anyone thinks Jo-Ed's and Subway are in the same league they must be crazy or have some personal axe to grind. Overall, great sandwich spot. Looking forward to a repeat visit. read more

This was the worst sub I've ever had. I took one bite and it was uneatable. the lettuce was gross and the sandwich had no taste other than the god awful turkey. Although I wouldn't even call it turkey and the coke was not a coke but tasted like a toilet bowl. Now the cheese is a whole other bracket. In my life so far I've been lucky to enjoy some really good bomber sandwiches from other establishments. Bombers as in real deal submarine sandwiches. From what I've learned, the business was originally opened by a couple from New Jersey. Therefore the name, Eastern style submarines. It's been a long time since they were at the helm since its been sold and run, now by new people. The cost of a 6" versus a foot is menial and quite affordable. I think the major difference is a mere dollar. Approximately $6 and some change for the original bomber in a foot long size. Their menu is short. Bombers consist of the typical deli meats but also include roast beef. Which is usually a plus since deli's tend to charge much more when roast beef is offered as a main or additional topping in a sandwich. Other than the bomber, you can opt for a meatball sandwich or one other style. Bombers may also be ordered with double or triple meat. If only the bread they used were of a better quality, this would be a plus. The bread is alike a French style though it's soft to the touch. Kind of like a french loaf you might pick up at a local bakery. To me, it reminds me of the small loaves I could buy at an Ethnic bakery, like a Middle Eastern or Greek one back in Chicago. I allowed them to just hook me up with a sandwich the way their locals have it. Got a foot long bomber topped with meatballs and marinara. They also loaded it with all their usual toppings. What makes a sub an Eastern style? Supposedly its the oils. Unfortunately for taste, it was a sandwich and nothing else. It made me realize that I at home am a pretty good chef in my own kitchen. I've made awesome meatball sandwiches from scratch and fantastic oven baked sandwiches. The pickle relish had nothing to relish about it and the bread became soggy to touch from being inside the hefty sandwich wrapper. This was a one and done experience for me. If management is listening. Real French bread would make a difference. Also sandwich style tomatoes, check them out at Whole Foods, they are like fruits. Maybe upgrade your meats to Boar head quality or a similar brand that Texans associate with. Or toast the sandwiches. While Quizno's is figuring out whether they will bankrupt or not, take some of their business. Only upon leaving did I notice an advertisement for the Tea Party in their front window. It was big, I am not sure how I missed it initially. I always give kudos to folks that have the balls to stand up for what they believe in, whether that be politics or religion, even if it differs with my own beliefs. However, being that they support the TP movement, if I'd noticed the sign sooner I may not have dined here. read more

a small one-off shop in arlington. my kinda place. i prefer to give my money to the individual shops over the big chains. i love the decor and the folks are nice. the price is reasonable. BUT every time i go there (EVERY TIME) they mess up the order. if it were crowded i could understand, but the times we go it isn't. and every time i can count on them not following instructions. i think the approach should be, "could you please make me a sandwhich?" and when asked what kind respond, "it doesn't matter, you don't listen anyway." trust me, i WANT TO LOVE this place. i've gone back probably 8-10 times over the last few years - always the same thing. last night was the same thing and i decided to finally write a review. attention to detail would go a long way. instead of "trying again" every few weeks it would become a weekly dive. i'm much more forgiving than my wife and she gets frustrated with them every time. but we keep trying to like them. read more
