Alas, Joe's Dining has gone so far downhill I may never eat there again after six years of steadily patronizing this neighborhood cafe. A friend and I popped in at 3 p.m. yesterday for a quick bite. Only three tables in the place, but getting a sandwich and onion rings took 25 minutes after we ordered. The chicken club was unremarkable and dry--barely half a teaspoon of mayo on one of the pieces of bread--and the onion rings were overcooked and lukewarm. Service was minimal. Since Covid, numerous items have disappeared from the menu (turkey sandwich, Reuben sandwich) and prices, already high, have risen even further. My friend and I shared a sandwich and one order of onion rings and drank water (this was a between-meals snack), and our bill was $24.86 before tip. Really? Terrible service! Or shall I say nonexistent service. We went on a Friday afternoon for our lunch break, got seated outside where 4 other tables were occupied and receiving a ton of attention.. After 25 minutes without acknowledgement, much less getting our drink order taken, we had to leave since it was our lunch HOUR! I returned our menus and silverware to the waitstaff who were just hanging out at the front, chatting with each other. I should also mention that it was far from a packed house. Joe's is an overlooked gem, due partly to its location, which is in a strip mall in the Southeast part of the city. Joe's sources local ingredients and focuses on quality in everything, they even serve Ohori's coffee. My husband and I have eaten there several times. Recently we ordered their rack of lamb with mashed potatoes as take-out to celebrate our anniversary. The local lamb was delicious, tender and a perfect medium rare. Parents invited me here for a St. Patrick's Day dinner, place was packed for the occasion. We had made a reservation earlier in the day, but wound up waiting 30 minutes to be seated anyway. Another 5 minutes for a server to take our drink orders, then 15 minutes more til we were served the drinks. Don't you hate it when you look over the menu, and make a decision, only to be told that the item isn't available, causing you to make a quick decision on a second choice? Me too. They didn't have eggplant for the eggplant parm. Went with the Veggie on Focaccia sandwich, with a side of mashed potatoes. Fast forward 20 minutes, and our food arrives. First bite of my sandwich gave me hope that I made a good snap decision for my second choice, it was delicious! Second bite revealed that the artichoke in the sandwich was COMPLETELY FROZEN! Server was nowhere to be seen, so I grabbed a busser, and let him know that the sandwich was inedible. On to my 3rd choice - Spaghetti Marinara. By the time it came out, the rest of my party had finished their meals. Couldn't eat much of it as it the noodles were way too salty. The marinara sauce seemed like it was just canned tomato chunks mixed with diced onions. 1 star because of having to wait 30 minutes despite having a reservation, terrible table service, & being served frozen food. If it was possible to give NO stars, based on my lunch today, I would do so. However, Hubby's BLT saved it--I won't give two stars because today, I had THE. MOST. AWFUL. LUNCH. EXPERIENCE I have had in many a year. Really! Hubby and I were seated at a table and waited a minute or so when the waiter, "Shon", delivered two glasses of water with lemon to the table. I was under the impression that our lovely state is in a drought condition and we are supposed to be conserving water; if I had wanted water with my lunch, I would have ordered it. The waiter NEVER asked either of us if we wanted another beverage than water; I managed to get one glass of iced tea from him, but only because I specifically asked for it. At the outset, I must say that the prices here are waaaaaaay out of line for any restaurant, I don't care if this IS Santa Fe. Just because everyone in town seems to be a snob, and this place seems to be at the top of the snob pile, doesn't mean that the prices have to be so high. I mean, $7.95 for an order of nachos?? (And more on THAT later). $8.99 for a BLT? Please!!! And adding $1.50 to a sandwich price for fries rather than chips?? Out. Rageous!! Hubby ordered the BLT with chips, only because the next cheapest thing on the menu was a grilled cheese and tomato, and he doesn't "do" grilled tomatoes. I ordered the nachos, and requested an add-on of ground beef (add $1.50 to the cost). We waited and waited, and when my nachos arrived, it was obvious that there was no beef on them. Shon stated that he had specifically stated "w/beef" on the order (confirmed by the final ticket). So the waiter returned to the kitchen with my plate, and it was returned to me within about 45 seconds, WITH A CHOPPED UP HAMBURGER PATTY PILED ON TOP OF THE PILE OF NACHOS!!!!! Any fool knows that one makes nachos with spiced and seasoned ground beef LAYERED with the other ingredients and a reasonable amount of queso (spiced melted cheese) also in the layers. There was AT LEAST one full cup of melted Velveeta poured over the chips, and a few squeezes of sour cream atop the pile. I tried eating them, and I have had better nachos at Taco Bell!!! Seriously! Hubby's BLT was very good - he let me finish about 1/3 of it because I could NOT eat those nasty nachos. However, the chips (made in-house) were soggy. He tried to eat some of my nachos, and said that the chopped-up hamburger on top was pretty lousy too---we get better hamburgers at Ironwood Kitchen in Rio Rancho!! When I complained, Shon said that I should have sent them back; I did, once. That's all the chance they get. He offered a salad, but by that time I was so disgusted that I was ready to walk out. He told Hubby "we don't sell that many orders of nachos." To their credit, they did remove the charge for the nachos from the final bill, but that doesn't make up for the fact that this restaurant has a cook who does NOT know how to make a plate of nachos that are edible and turns out soggy chips. We won't be back, and I am also posting this review on this restaurant's website to make sure that the owner is aware that not everyone loves their place. This restaurant was recommended to us by one of our customers, who highly praised it. EDIT: After I posted this review, I was led to read prior reviews of this restaurant. I have to say that if I had had access to a computer at 11:00 a.m., we would NOT have gone to this restaurant at all. Reading that a person wearing a "Joe's" tee shirt was seen shopping at Sam's Club, and another person was seen loading meat and produce from Sam's into the Joe's van leads me to believe that "Joe" is not being totally honest about his "passion for a local and sustainable food supply"; I am sure that Joe buys staples--flour, sugar, oil, etc.--at Sam's, but to buy meat and produce there is beyond the pale. Patronize this place at your own peril. SECOND EDIT: About a week after I posted this review, I received a response here from someone representing Joe's defending the restaurant. In response, I have only this to say: For an owner and a restaurant that advertises his "passion for a local and sustainable food supply", his credibility is completely destroyed by allowing an employee to shop at Sam's Club in a restaurant tee-shirt and by allowing his company vehicle to be seen in the parking lot at Sam's. If he was serious about his "passion", he certainly would not allow those two things to happen---so he could keep on disillusioning his clientele about his "passion" for locally obtained products. Second, I was castigated because I didn't allow a third chance at making the nachos right. If the second round didn't fix the problem, how was I to know that a third round wouldn't?? The cook obviously does not know how to make nachos. The waiter - Shon - was studiously ignoring our table as well. When he DID finally appear at the table, it was to bring the check! It's called a diner and looks like a very clean diner, but the food is on another level! "Diner food" of a much higher quality. The quality of service is equally as high. I've been here a few times, tried the beef, buffalo, and lamb burgers (I love green chile on all of them, and they offer many options) and a few desserts which were great as well! The meat is very high quality from local farms, and you can tell! The housemade potato chips (both sweet and regular) are tasty, and the salad is nice and fresh. GREAT food! Generous portions and good prices, too! I eat here whenever I am in Santa Fe. The staff is always welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere of the restaurant is always light and cheerful. Everything on the menu is locally sourced and absolutely delicious. The salads are always fresh and satiating if you are looking for a lighter meal. Probably the worst dining experience we've had in Santa Fe. My mother-in-law ordered a cup of soup, My husband ordered a cold sandwich (came with a cup of soup), I ordered a veggie burger with blue cheese and a cup of soup. All three soups came and we loved them. Thought we were off to a really good start. Thirty minutes later no sandwiches. The place was empty (only three tables seated) yet the place was filled with waiters and bus-people taking buckets of dishes to and from the back rooms. We watched them cart dishes across the restaurant and then start dumping out old beverages into the planter out in front of the restaurant. Classy! We're still waiting. Our waiter never came back to clear our soups; he completely disappeared. We had to hail someone from the kitchen to find out what happened with our food. They found our waiter and he immediately came back with the food saying "it's crazy here tonight." It may have been crazy earlier, but it wasn't now. The sandwiches were bad. I had about four dry blue cheese crumbles on my burger...no sauce. It was just dry bread, a dry patty, the usual uninspired lettuce and tomato. My husband's sandwich was equally dry, as if, he said, it had been sitting under a heat lamp for 30 minutes. Fine enough for a diner I guess, but we had yet to see what they were about to charge for these barely edible sandwiches. Our waiter never came back...ever. Thirty minutes later, we had to stand up with our coats and take our check to another waitress, who acted irritated to have to ring us up. Loved this place! It has such a fantastic vibe. It's one of the few places in town that offers a generous gluten free menu. What a treat for me because I love pizza and don't get to have it often because of my restrictions. Smalls here. I was delighted to retunn to Joe's after an abstinence for whatever reason. The restaurant is in tip top clean shape which is a huge attraction to me & anyone I've instilled the importance to. Roland you rock on the duty. Right out of the gate while sitting there deciding what to eat I glanced into the open kitchen to see the lead kitchen employee without kitchen gloves wiping his nose with his hand, then using his fingers to addredd whatever else was in his nose that was bothering him. C'mon man!! Roland, after seeing that.. I really hesitated to dine with you. You obviously can't be there to watch everything, but you can clearly instill important kitchen skills to long time dedicated employees which should be your signature to your restaurant's success; clean restaraunt, staff hygiene, good service.. at affordable prices. No gloves? Not that anyone won't touch their nose or other body parts without owners observing, but up front in the window? Really? What goes on behind that open window? There's caring chefs and then there's employees. Take your pick. It will be years again before I visit again. We went to Joe's tonight for dinner. The service was good. My husband had the special halibut and he said it was good. It looked good. I had the eggplant parmesan. Was really disappointed. The eggplant was cut really thin so it was nothing but breading, the eggplant was just not there. The sauce was really bitter, had no taste. Don't think we will be going there again. Good food, fun servers, interesting atmosphere, admirable ethos. This eatery is committed to locally raised items (slow food, some might call it), and high quality. The nice thing is that they produce some tasty dishes without breaking the bank. There are a lot of places that emulate the same concept, but are decidedly more pricey. I had the BBQ platter, which was good but nothing to crow about. Wife had the lamb burger on a gluten free bun. I liked hers more. Oh, and about that gluten thing, if you are into gluten free this is the place for you. They have a ton of GF options. Also, local beer on draft, hooray! Our server was fun and personable. Always nice to have someone that takes their job seriously, but isn't too rigid. He made jokes, I liked that and it fit the casual ambiance of the place. Excellent dessert options. We tried the Strawberry-rhubarb pie, and I liked it. I'm partial to rhubarb. Also had an espresso truffle which I was so impressed with I ordered some to go to give as gifts. read more

Joe's is a great place for some traditional American dining. The restaurant uses local food where they can, and organic and high quality ingredients where that is not possible. I found this place when I had a doctor's appointment that was going to be delayed by an hour. After deciding to get something to eat here we became fans. Sunday brunch is very good with their hollandaise crab cakes. Their burgers are very good and pizza is awesome. The wait staff is top-notch and go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. This is a surprising find of a restaurant in Santa Fe. It's much better than the overpriced tourist traps in downtown. The only thing I've had that wasn't excellent was the spaghetti. It was merely "good". Be sure to check out their specials as they have all been quite good. The price is a tad high, but in a town where eating american food is considered exotic it's a great place. read more

This just happenes to my father and I: After seeing the new Spider-Man film, my father and I decided to go to Joes Diner for some food. After ordering our beverages, it took almost 30 minutes for our server to take our order when our menus were clearly down. A simple order of a cup of soup as an appetizer and two salads for our main meal. None of our food arrived within 30 minutes of waiting as opposed to several tables seated after us. Really? Your serving steaks and other entrees within 20 minutes but cant make good on a cup of soup? I threw $2 down on the table and we left. Just left this Saturday night after spending 180.00 at Joe's Diner. Food and service were excellent. But a loud drunk in the corner ruined dinner for many folks shouting his politics to us all. I complained, but manager told me it was fine if we left and didn't come back. We said nothing else and left the restaurant. All I did was tell them politely this guy was ruining dinner for folks with his loud, insane drunken commentary. If we hadn't already paid out, I'd ask for compensation. Joe's Diner is conveniently located on Rodeo Road, a main traffic passageway from Eastside to Westside Santa Fe and has a primarially american style food menu. And pizza that is oddly almost the same as Piccolino's on Agua Fria, but a bit more expensive because they use fresh mozzarella cheese. Pizza at both places is quite good, but not the primary focus. I think my main gripe with Joe's Diner is that the price of EVERYTHING is pretty high for what you receive. Black bean soup is astonishingly high-priced for the amount you receive and even the salads, while tastey, hover about $2 to $3 above anything on the southside area of town. Maybe it's the location, I don't know. With that said, I've never had any TERRIBLE food at Joe's Diner and even though it's a little out of my way, I do eat here a couple times a year. read more

If you're looking for American food, Joe's is a good place to eat. We had a fish and chips special which was good if the way my lunch partner gulped it down was any indication. I had a veggie sandwich on focaccia which consisted of tomatoes, lettuce, artichoke hearts, and red pepper. It was good, but so thick that the arties kept falling out. We each had cole slaw for a side. It was okay. I will eat here again...lots of stuff on the menu and I was impressed that Joe Salatin, one of the movers and shakers in the sustainable food world, ate there. We got pizza here based off of other yelp reviews. Sadly those reviews were grossly inaccurate. This was probably the worst pizza we have ever had. The crust was like cardboard and it lacked in toppings. The toppings we did get also had no flavor. It's also a complete rip off. $30+ for a large pizza and two sodas?! You know, Joe's is okay. We know now not to go on Mondays (closed?). It's been maybe 2 or 3 visits now. Each time the service was medium paced, pleasant enough. Meatball sandwich: really heavy, sauce turns buns into mush. Tasty. Burgers, kind of pricey (but to be expected), and has some tasty combinations to choose from. (Blue Cheese and Bacon burger that doesn't taste like dirt? Or salad dressing? Yipee!) I know I should try something else....but B&B burger...tasty.
