My boyfriend and I were out here for a weekend so I did some research and found this spot on Yelp ! Everything was so so so good. We ordered a half carafe of the house red and drank it through dinner! The service is amazing and so kind! They continued to bring us bread and water consistently ! we ordered the rack of lamb, crab cakes and the shrimp cocktail. Everything was a hit!! One of the worst meals I have ever had. Not edible..Price for the slop we were served was outrageous. The bill was a mess, all blacked out, and yet we made no changes in our orders. Palm Springs worst kept secret! Lovely setting great service, but awe full food. Salad was just lettuce and tomatoes. Crab cakes were tiny and not lump meat, but the cheap stringy crab meat, we ate them but that was it. I had lobster ravioli, one bite and I almost barfed, sent it back! Husband has the filet. It didn't look or taste like a filet. It tasted like hospital food. Sent that back too. To top things off, they charged us for everything, full price! Do not come here unless you like nursing home food. I just remembered, they brought me a plastic container with Kraft Parmesan cheese from the can for my pasta. This place is always busy and deservedly so! One of the best things about John Henry's is the way traditional dishes have been refined to be more healthy. The beef stroganoff, for example, is traditional slow cooked tender chunks of beef, but the sour cream is on the side. Yum! Likewise the chicken pot pie is a comfort food favorite to which broccoli and cauliflower have been added. Amazing! The meatloaf is more traditional, but the veggies on the side show careful attention by the chef. read more

Sorry to disagree with everyone--but I am not enamored of this place. And that is due to it's maniacal nature. Wow. It's CROWDED. Tables are way way too close. Numerous servers weaving in and out--unsuccessfully. Our table was in the middle outside. I was bumped constantly. It was really obnoxious. I was cringing, waiting for someone to drop something on me. And they are the Southwest Airlines of turning tables. We watched people stand up and before they were a foot from their table the tablecloth was changed and plates etc moving in. It WAS NOT relaxing or conducive to a nice meal. This is our go to place whenever we want an assured great meal, perfect service and superb ambiance. We're Palm Springs residents 9 months of the year with a wide array of restaurants to choose from. John Henry's offers quality, decent selections and very affordable prices. It's never been a hit and miss because the offerings are consistently perfect. I'm partial to the Escargot then Rack of Lamb. Always spot on. My friends and loved ones have tried just about everything on menu, never a complaint. Visiting friends from Sante Fe recently asked us to take them to "that place that had the marvelous chop-chop salad" .... and so we did. They also had duck and crab cakes. Again, a hit! Casual yet enchanting ambiance and delicious food with a staff who are professional, efficient and pleasant. Been here at least 50 times over past 6, 7 years, never a complaint! They get top marks. Pros: Our server was great. She tried as hard as she could but it was so busy that she did not have time to check on us more than once. Cons: The food was mediocre and completely overpriced. In our party of 5 on Tday, four of us had the turkey dinner with salad and pie, and the fifth person was so disenchanted by the $48.95 pricetag for the turkey dinner that he got pork roast (pork loins?) instead. Let me just say that this was one of the worst Thanksgiving meals I have ever had. It was completely tasteless. Not even the salt/pepper on the table could save it. The chopped salad that came before the plate was fine but this sort of salad (with feta and chopped tomatoes) doesn't really fit in with Tday cuisine. The pork pieces served to the fifth person were HUGE, and he reported that the taste wasn't even good, that whatever marinade they used was just kind of blah. The pecan pie slice I got was probably the last one in the pie tin, it was just soggy remnants of what was probably otherwise a good pie. The ice cream scoop tasted better than the pie! Like I said, it wasn't the worst, but it was pretty far down there (the granddaddy of all failures came some years ago at Black Angus steakhouse where they quite clearly pulled the pre-made plates out of the freezer and microwaved them). All this aside, it was very packed in the all-patio seating area and a number of people in walkers/wheelchairs were trekking in and out. It was very noisy and we all had to talk loudly in order to hear each other. Smokers - and not only of cigarettes but pot and vape - were smoking right near the entrance and the smoke came right over to our table. There was a very hot heater above our table that got so hot that we had to ask them to turn it off. Anyhow, we'll make up for this meal at Christmas, but will not be returning to John Henry's again. read more

While it has a great Palm Springs history it has gone downhill over the years. It is tucked behind a strip mall with over grown lighted ficus trees creating a charming cover on the coveted patio. The food is one step above a middle grade diner and the service is adequate. There are to many new and innovative places springing up all over the desert. read more

This restaurant is a well-kept secret in Palm Springs. It was suggested to us by friends whose parents live there. We have not dined out much in the past year and a half because of Covid and I admit I have been jaded against not having great experiences anywhere in 2021. But coming to dinner at John Henry's blew me away! From the friendly owners, to the beautiful patio, to the old-school menu, to the impeccable waitstaff, I came away from this experience a very happy lady! We had the escargot, lobster ravioli, and baked pork chops. My husband had two glasses of wine, each a very generous pour. And to end the evening the staff brought an ice cream sundae and sang to me for my birthday. The patio was full of repeat customers, you could tell by the way the owners and servers greeted them! And I loved that the waitstaff worked together to remove an empty plate every time they passed by even if it wasn't their table! Prices in their website do not reflect the prices charged in the restaurant. They also do all their receipts manually and make mistakes on the bill. I took six friends to the restaurant yesterday and the bill was nearly $40 more than it should have been due to being added up incorrectly and not charging the prices from their online menu. We were here for an early dinner this past Friday.  This has been one of our favorite places for a while now. The food we had was some of the worst the 4 of us ever had anywhere. Palm Spring's Local's "secret love" isn't so secret any longer!! This unassuming venue has become a favorite of many of our good friends who love great food and a pleasant atmosphere with good service. We actually arrived a little early and there were already many tables taken, however we found a nice table for four on the side which was just fine. Our sailor friends arrived, and drinks were served...another beautiful desert evening commenced. We ordered Macadamia nut-encrusted Sole, Liver and Onions, Scampi with pasta, and I just had to have their delicious Salmon...all cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed their dinner salads and Potato leak soup with ham beforehand. We little is lacking for this local gem and the staff works hard to make sure everyone is enjoying their evening. Sorry to admit, we over-stayed our welcome so hopefully we were able to make sure our servers were duly rewarded!! Oh YES!! We will come back and soon!!! read more

We've lived in PS for over a year and finally gave John Henry's a try. We made a reservation for Saturday night but could only get inside seating at 5:30. When we arrived, we asked if patio seating was possible. The manager offered us our choice of tables but we had the be finished in one hour. He assured us it would be plenty of time to enjoy drinks and a full meal. The patio area is charming; we had a nice table. We ordered drinks and asked for an order of their escargots. The waiter was quite pushy and demanded we place our dinner order. We pushed back and said we'd order dinner once the appetizer arrived. He informed us that due to the tight one hour turnaround, we needed to order everything and all of the food would come at the same time. We offered to move to an inside table as we did not want the appetizer, salad and meal at the same time. He went to speak to the manager and returned saying not to worry. The escargot were amazing! The green and Caesar salads were both excellent. The Caesar is $4 extra, no big deal, but is is garnished one anchovy. You have to pay extra for a side order, which I'll do next time as they were really good. I ordered the house specialty, rack of lamb and my husband got the pork chops. Dinner was served quickly on very hot plates with delicious piping hot mashed potatoes. My lamb was raw-- purple in the middle. They cooked it more and it was still raw so I asked for the pork chops instead. The pork chops are two big, breaded chops and are cooked through but still moist and so tender. The carrots were pretty bland. Next time I'll order extra mashed potatoes--so good! We each took a pork chop home and a piece of their coconut cake (huge slice). Looking forward to enjoying dessert later this evening. Despite a couple of bumps, we are very impressed with John Henry's. The service was friendly and very attentive and the food as excellent. Had it not been for our pushy waiter, who chilled out after he spoke to the manager, it was a 5 star experience. We're going back next Saturday!!! read more

Excellent food and outstanding service! My family and I had dinner on their patio and the setting is very nice. Everyone ordered different dishes (Grill, Salmon, macadamia crusted sea bass and, oven escotes duck). Everyone loved their dishes. As appetizers we ordered escargot which is the best we ever had. We loved this place and we have made it a tradition when we vistió Palm Springs. Alfredo and Luis (owners) are the best in ensuing you have the best experience. I love this place. I loved it 5 years ago too. This was the first time sitting inside. the patio is wonderful but inside you can peek in to the artistic mind of John Henry. Casual dining with table linen and wonderful cocktails. I told the server that I remembered the martini glass from before I ordered sea bass and my FWB had a shrimp dish. My fish was an ample portion especially when a yam or was it a sweet potato and some asparagus accompanied it. YUMMY! I wanted to lick my plate. my friends shrimp in his word "Devine" and the asparagus was perfectly cook. From our table we were able to see the parade of oversized desserts coming out of the kitchen. We were only two and didn't have desert but most could be shared with 4 or 6. Lovely cakes and piles of ice cream. Best to have a reservation and the patio is great. But indoors was fun because of the art and watching the kitchen staff put out food that looked like I should have it next time. Rack of lamb is definitely on that list. read more

VERY VERY BAD RESTAURANT, TERRIBLE SERVICE AND POORLY COOKED FOOD...AVIOD THIS RESTARANT!!! I went to this restaurant because my experiences in the past have all been great. The food was good as well as the service. This time it was a completely different experience. The problems started with the main courses. One guest ordered the Lobster Ravioli in brown butter. There was so much butter on the dish that it totally overwhelmed the dish and that was all you could taste. Another guest ordered the nut crusted fish. The crust was soggy and tasteless. Another guest ordered the pork chops. They were over cooked and dry and there was no gravy as stated on the menu. The ultimate insult was that one of the guests ordered a Caesar Salad with grilled Chicken. It was a bit over dressed but that was not the main issue. The wait staff had been clearing plates as we finished. That include the bread plates. Since he did not have a bread plate he took a piece of bread and a wrapped pad of butter and put it on his plate. The waiter came over as he was eating and tried to take his plate. The waiter said the "there was paper on his plate and that meant he was done". My friend pointed out that he had taken the bread plate and where else should he put the wrapper. The waiter insisted that he was done since the wrapper was on the plate. My friend said he was not done. Finally the waiter took the plate and walked off. This is completely unacceptable, especially for the prices of the entrees. They run upper $20-low $30's. In addition, all the meals had soggy over cooked vegetables which included one that had mashed potatoes. Not of the vegetables had any flavor. How do you over cook fresh vegetables? I will not be returning. I have also told many of my friends that live in Palm Springs of our experience. I was told that this type of service and food quality has been going on for quite some time. Second year in a row for our anniversary. The service was excellent. The wait staff were (as it seems always) warm, friendly and fun. The food is excellent too. Courteous and always asking if everything was OK, but it wasn't the usual sort of just saying it, they really wanted to know that we were enjoying everything about our experience. They treated us to a good old fashion sing of "Happy Anniversary and even though that's always embarrassing, it felt like family and was much appreciated. It seem that John Henry's is the destination spot for our celebrations from now on. Don't Go Here (LOL) because we want this to be out place !...... but alas.... no one will heed this and will go there out of curiosity...... or they already know John Henry's and and love it like we do. 5 stars for food and 5 stars for the staff (I wish I could give more) read more

It's a shame how quickly this place has gone downhill. We had dinner (well some of us at least) last night and it started out with having to wait 30 minutes for our 6:30 reservation. When we finally sat down, the place was overpacked with people with nowhere to walk. The owners obviously was overbooking and jamming tables everywhere and making people uncomfortable. We then asked our server to turn the heaters on as it was cold out. That never happened and I had to ask another server who finally made us a little more comfortable. It took awhile for our orders as our waitress was running around with her head cut off due to the overbooking. We were then told there was no meatloaf or chicken ( I guess ground beef is hard to find). With limited entree options I chose the spaghetti (again, I begged for a meatball but due to the ground beef shortage that wasn't possible). All the meals came out except for mine. I waited another 10 minutes, no waitress to be seen in an hour, and finally had to flag her down. She then told us that they are "out"'of spaghetti and forgot to tell me!!! Now, my other guests are all done eating and I ended up getting someone's leftover fettuccini (it sucked). I asked to speak to the owner but even he was too embarrassed to come out until the end. So a recap- they overbook, seat you late, forget your meals, average food at best, overpriced, and it doesn't seem like they care. read more

The best-kept secret in Palm Springs! The outdoor patio was delightfully magical. Service was wonderful. Everything we ordered had a special and delightful quality to it. We came over the Christmas holiday week with a party of 18. We sat at two tables - adults and kids from teen to college - and everyone had a great time and great meals. I don't understand all of the great reviews. This place needs a lot of help. Having dined here several times, I will say that the patio is quite romantic, indoor seating is cramped and right next to the kitchen) The menu is super outdated, and pricey for what they offer. Not to mention all over the board, There is no signature style or reason why some items are even on this menu. For instance escargot 13$ Beef stroganoff $26 Roast turkey dinner $26 Moussaka: 28$ (seriously) Meatloaf $24 (yes all of these random items are on the same menu) Pretty sure Im not gonna order escargot at a restaurant that serves meatloaf, kielbasa, Italian sausage and roast turkey We had a filet mignon, overcooked, dry and bland. I would have sent it back if it had not taken 30 minutes to arrive. Macadamia crusted sole, good flavor but mushy and the crust was not seared well at all. The salads that came with the meal were like a handful of bag lettuce on a plate, laughable actually. Service was really slow and made the dinner last two hours. Skip this place and go to Spencers, better value, way better food, service and ambiance. read more
