We've been meaning to come for dinner for a while now, but it never worked out. In season this is a hard Rez, especially in the 530-7 range. Most all seating is outdoors, they do have a very small interior. As a result, they close for the summer for three months. Too hot!! Check the website. John Henry himself was on duty and came by to chat us up. Each of our dishes; chicken, turkey, and pasta were very good. The chopped salad was perfect for me. Stellar service and environment.

Our dinner at John Henry's Café, a well-known hidden gem in Palm Springs, was a treat. Though "well-known" and "hidden gem" sound contradictory, the restaurant sits off the main tourist path behind the Sunrise Center strip shopping area (home of a Dollar Tree.) The restaurant has a charming, nostalgic retro vibe with an intimate interior and a large outdoor patio strung with twinkling lights and greenery. I enjoyed the Roast Turkey Dinner from the chef's specials -- generous portions of both white and dark meat with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, and homemade cranberry sauce. We were told it appears on the specials menu "every day" during peak season. I can see why -- it was superb. My partner chose the Chicken Piccata: grilled chicken breast in a bright, tangy lemon‑and‑caper sauce, served with sautéed green beans and buttered carrots. Our party also ordered the sautéed veal liver, milder than beef liver and served smothered in sautéed onions and crisp bacon for a sweet‑and‑salty crunch. And the meatloaf was equally good -- moist, flavorful, and topped with a savory tomato sauce. All entrees came with a choice of soup or salad; the four of us had the Chop Chop Salad -- finely chopped iceberg and romaine with bleu cheese crumbles, diced tomatoes, and red onion. Famous for its massive homemade cakes, we finished up by sharing a slice of the Sunny Lemon Cake. Large enough for four people to share and served a la mode with a pint (no kidding) of vanilla ice cream. Yum. Definitely worth a visit when you're in Palm Springs.

Escargot.... Hands-down, the best in Palm Springs!

we love to come here, the staff is fantastic and Cheryl is our favorite waitress! It's sad to see that this place has to close each summer for the extreme heat so we wait patiently each year for its reopening.

Green dinner salad gone wrong with too many onions and too much honey mustard dressing.

An overrated restaurant IMO. We hadn't enjoyed two sips of our cocktails when our dinner salads were already brought out to the table. And because our cocktails were way too vodka infused, it didn't do the taste of the salads any favors; my dinner salad was positively soggy in a mound of onions and honey-mustard dressing. Our right-on-the-heels entrees were nothing to write home about and in fact bordered on disappointing. I suppose the outdoor patio experience makes up for a lot. Alas we were seated indoors.

What a lovely outdoor garden area they have to dine under the stars. The staff here was very friendly and accommodating. The food was solid with a wide variety of herrings on the menu. I had shrimp and scallop scampi-style and it was fresh and perfectly cooked. I did notice quite a few of the tables were celebrating birthdays and saw quite a few large cake slices getting passed around, one day I'll have to come back and try the cake.

Great start! I heard friends talking about this place and haven't been able to make it until now. I was able to get a reservation on thier last night before closing for the summer. I started with the broiled artichoke. This was a great start! The artichoke with parmesan tasted on top was so flavorful. For my main, I ordered the beef stroganoff. The beef was so tender with the egg noodles cooked to perfection and the sauce topped it off, Yum!! It also came with carrots and green beans. Loved the veggies!! The ambiance was surprising, I'm not sure what to expect, but it was smaller than I thought. Interesting art on the walls. I was hoping it would have been cooler so I could enjoy the outside seating with the big tree and lights, but I'll definitely come back when they open. The service was great, so attentive and professional.

Plentiful Turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, and stuffing with green beans.

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. We've been to Trio then Spencer's the previous 2 years living here. JH was superb! We had a 5:30pm reservation; when we arrived we were ushered into our indoor table. The restaurant has some lovely artwork throughout of tasteful big bottomed gals! The waitress we had was professional and immediately brought our drink order and took our 2 orders for the Turkey Special dinner. ($69 per person if you're wondering) As you can see in the attached photo, the meal was plentiful and I will tell you it was delicious. My hubby had the chop-chop salad & I the green garden one. Desert of pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream followed was the perfect ending of our meal. We were out in 30 mins. Leaving there must have been 20 more waiting to dine! I hope they all had just as nice of a time as we did! BTW, both owners came by our table, and shook our hands. I wished both a Happy Thanksgiving.

The menu has nice seafood dishes, pastas and classic meat entrees as well as salads. The outdoor seating ambiance is great for casual dining. Reservations are a must. I enjoyed a delicious large Barramundi filet with sweet potato, green beans and a salad. A friend had the duck and said it was delicious and a large portion. Will be back soon. The service is friendly and excellent. Must try their martinis next time! I liked their bread and appreciated the high quality butter cubes.

It was an outstanding evening with excellent service and food. This is a restaurant with outside dining and it was a perfect evening with all the beautiful trees lit up with lights. The host and the staff were the best. The drink order was taken immediately and large martinis were served. The waiter was very kind and got all of our dishes, correct. I had the stroganoff which had and abundance of tender beef over noodles served with carrots. Our tables shared a dessert which was oversized and was perfect ending to a lovely evening.

I'm glad to see John Henry's is doing such a great business for years. It's sort of been a hidden gem for locals, I think the value is very good. The ambience is just wonderful seating, cocktails . Strong And large portions

Ask the Community - John Henry's

Is there any sort of dress code?

Not really, but I would recommend nice shorts and button shirt in summer and nice jeans/pants and button shirt in winter. A polo type shirt would work too.

Do they allow dogs on the patio?

I can say, absolutely! I happen to have a seizure, alert, dog, so she is a service dog. However, they did not ask and being a small dog, even pulled a chair up for her. On the inside not being a service dog I would say probably not. But outside on…

Are you open during the summer?

John Henry's closes for the summer at the end of May and reopens in late September.

We tend to come for them mainly but have never tried dinner here. Of course the bubbly is always a good start. A bottle with three juice options and fresh fruit for adornment. Strawberries and blueberries for the bougie bubbly effect. And for the price, it's worth it. Food wise, we went with the chicken sandwich with salad and the burger with fruit. A side of fries is definitely a must even if it comes with it. Portion for the sandwich was massive. Nice thick piece of grilled and marinaded chicken breast filled with lettuce, tomatoes, onion and avocados on toasted bread. It's massive even when they sliced it in halves. The lady at the door told us inside would probably be loud because there were two bigger tables in there. It was hot outside, so we decided to sit inside anyway. We almost immediately regretted that and wished we'd sat outside. This place is not made for being busy on the inside. It's just too loud. But, cute in there. Our server, who we later learned was the bartender and not a usual server, took our drink orders. A few of us ordered the Hugo spritz, one gal got a beer, and a few other cocktails were ordered. We got our drinks and they were enjoyable. The problem began when we were ordering food. One girl in our group is Celiac and literally can not eat gluten. She ordered the salmon and asked to be sure the potato salad was gluten free. If things are fried or prepared in the same place as gluten objects, she is incredibly ill for weeks afterwards. She has to be super careful. His response was, "I think so." She told him she was celiac and had a true gluten allergy, and she needed him to be sure. Meanwhile, the menu boasts about how they proudly serve gluten free options right on the bottom. He then said, "yeah, I'm pretty sure it is." He genuinely did not seem concerned. She ended up ordering it but felt uncomfortable about whether or not it was really safe for her. Another girl at the end of the table asked him to please double check, as it was really a serious allergy. He said, "Yeah I am going to ask the chef. I wasn't going to just ignore it and make all you girls mad." He had the snarkiest tone when he said it, and it was incredibly, incredibly rude. That right there gave us a bad taste in our mouths. He came back out and said he checked with the chef, and it was indeed gluten free. Food came out and all tasted good. But when a restaurant prides itself on gluten free options, and then makes it so hard to order, it's not a good look. We wouldn't be back.

Hi top, low top, booth or the bar. Option is alway a good thing. We went with the booth seating as it was quite roomy and had a nice back cushion. Of course our waiter David was the sweetest. He remembered us from way back but something else was there that I couldn't put my finger on. Asked him if he worked somewhere else which he did and the funny thing was, he took care of us there about a month and half ago. Guess the desert restaurant experience, you'll run into the same people. Very sweet there and the exact same here. Made the dining situation great. Brunch menu does offer a good amount of items. A mixture of breakfast items, egg dishes, sandwiches and salads as well as miscellaneous items. Plus they have the mimosas deal. You can either go straight with champagne with 2 refills for 12.00 or mimosas with 2 refill for 14.00. Not bad and alway a must for brunch. Food wise, I'm not a burger person but something about the "Gregor" looked interesting. 1/2 pound of fresh ground angus beef, Kobe short rib, beer cheese sauce, romaine lettuce, tomato onion jam, dill pickles in a brioche bun. Also had it with an over easy egg. It's massive and a little messy picking everything up. Not a burger lover but this item was quite tasty. The meats were juicy and there was enough of it. It was worth having a burger. That was served with fries which was more like shaved potatoes. Also the Rolys Cubano sandwich. Pressed under iron skillet roasted pork, Virginia ham, Gruyère cheese, dill pickles and sour cherry Dijon. It wasn't the same as I've had at Cubans restaurants in Miami and others but it was tasty. A little different from what I'm used to but it was good. Also comes with a side which we went with onion rings for an additional fee. They were quite tasty and big. Cooked well and nice and crunchy. Refills of mimosas were always on time whenever the glass was empty. Service was excellent. Everyone working was major dolls. David was excellent and made sure that we were taken cared of with anything we needed. Water was always refilled when it was emptied. The place did picked up during our meal and after we left. They do have patio seating but no one wants to be out when it's triple digit. We enjoyed and had a great time for brunch. Until next time.
