Solid basic diner. A local's staple. Excellent Hué is rancheros. Quick, simple tough to beat.

A no frills, inexpensive neighborhood joint. Large portions for the price. I ordered the chipotle western burger which came with fries and a drink. Two of us split the meal. It was tasty but nothing special. I enjoy coming here because they have a large menu and you can get breakfast all day. You can also get a beer or wine (when they aren't out of it). read more

On a whim, I went here lately for lunch. I ordered a simple Greek salad with chicken expecting more or less the same quality and service that I have received previously in the Palm Springs location. Unfortunately, when the salad came, it consisted of a small and very tasteless portion of iceberge lettuce and tomatoes and an unmemorable side of what was supposed to be Greek dressing. When I asked where the pita was, I was told that this location doesn't provide "free" pita with salads. Now, if I were the waitress expecting the tip, I would have gotten my behind back in the kitchen and simply gotten some for the customer, but apparently this location is really hard up for cash (and good service), so that didn't happen. Can't say I'd ever come back and the sad part is I work so close! read more

I eat at the one in Palm Springs a lot. So my wife and I are near this one and figure we'll stop and get a Frisco burger. Frisco burger should come with "cheese, thousand island and the other basic toppings." When our plates come this burger has lettuce, tomato & mayo. Needless to say, we're not too happy and won't be coming back! If you want a good John's experience, go to the Palm Springs location. Food and experience will be way better! read more

Not the John's it Used to Be We attempt to support family businesses. We have eaten at John's for more than 10 years. However, I am sorry to say, the last 4-5 times we have been there have been big disappointments. Recently we have been going in for our usual favorites. However, all the portions were half of the normal size, not nearly as filling and poorly cooked.. Today, 12/5/20 we ordered take out and picked it up in the required time. We only live about 10 mins from John's - food was not only cold, but French Fries were limp. The hamburger was missing the cheese and my fajita plate, the refried beans were cold and solidified and the rice was white rice. Who uses plain white rice for a fajita plate? On top of everything, the service was unwelcoming . We used to recommend John's to everyone. We won't be doing that anymore. read more

I have been a customer for years and it hasn't changed one bit! The food is delicious and the staff is so welcoming. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the pricing on the menu is off. Not by much but it is concerning when you see something misleading such as pricing. Pay attention the next time it says it only costs so much more to make any entree a meal and then see how the meal is priced higher. read more

I have been going to John's for years. Last night was not the first time I witnessed cross contamination in the cooking and food prep...last night was the worse...I was tired and wanted a chicken taco salad...I should have insisted it be remade or just got a refund and left...however I ate it and had severe food poisoning. The owner handled cash then plated salads with his unwashed hands. The cook handled raw chicken then raw beef then bread and buns all without washing hands. I will never go back to John's again. I placed an Uber delivery and yes she ordered was received exactly how we ordered it but how are we supposed to eat without any utensils?? Our order consisted of burgers chili fries, regular fries, nuggets and drinks and we didn't get any straws, no forks or any condiments what so ever. read more

First time I've been here my fiancé always raved about the place so we finally went to check it out. The cashier at the counter was beyond rude she had no smile was the furthest thing from welcome and I had repeated something she had said to me and her response was "yeah that's what I said" so I was like wooh. The server who brought us our food and drinks was very nice a huge smile and super attentive unfortunately there was nothing special about the food so we will not be returning anytime soon and I'd highly recommend the owners reconsider the lady they have taking orders cause she's not the first person you want your guest to see cause that sets off for a horrible start to the experience read more

My elderly neighbors like to take me to lunch or breakfast here whenever we do little favors for them. I don't have the heart to tell them we hate this place. They have good intentions but apparently not good taste. The place is dirty. The food is desperately striving to attain mediocrity. The service is forgetful and slow. Hell, maybe it would be better if the service was nonexistent. At least that way I wouldn't be sitting wondering where my crappy meal is while everybody eats theirs. This is the default diner for desert denizens after a night of serious drinking and hardy partyin', provided they get there before the 9 p.m. closing time. Bottom line is, you can always find something appealing at John's when you're really hungry or you just don't feel up for finer dining. And since my desert base is about a quarter mile from the place, I can get take-out and it's still warm on my return. The place reminds me of Lucky Boy in Pasadena (see review), as it is Greek influenced, but mainly offers American and Mexican food. However, if you eat in, the staff brings your order to the table, like at Sizzler. It is different from Lucky Boy because the counter staff is rarely gruff, and pastrami is not a big attraction at John's. I like all their deep-fried sides, but haven't tried their mushrooms yet. The Greek salad is excellent, and gyros is a trusty menu standby. I don't seem to make it there for breakfast, but I know they get a steady crowd of early morning business from my people, the proletariat. I'm aware of reviewers ragging on John's for being dirty and gross, but I think they're confusing slovenliness with outmoded decor. If you need your diner to look like a poodle parlor, don't enter John's. read more

This trip to John's was one of many over the years and each time I go I find it is either, better, worse or different than the last. We went last night because if we stayed home we would have starved and I have taken a solemn vow to cook as seldom as possible. My choice to eat was the Cobb Salad, a dish to which I am addicted. Dining mate wanted the Chicken Kabobs. Salad was "hyooge" (as The Donald would say.). It had all good ingredients. I was not so impressed with the Chicken Kabobs. They seemed cemented to the skewer, so difficult to remove and they looked a little too charred to me. I would have preferred the chicken cut in smaller pieces, but heck, I wasn't eating it and the one who was never uttered one complaint. It came with the choice of fried zucchini. Here's the bad part. A third way through my salad, the housefly contingent of the Blue Angels zoomed in and performed. It was so bad I covered my salad entirely with paper napkins and asked for a box. The kabob eater bravely continued for awhile and then we boxed his. My salad will provide three meals because it was so "hyooge" and the kabobs were finished for brunch today. Why are not all restaurants required by law to install those wind machines at the entrances? They are very effective in keeping out the flies While watching an employee clean a table I noticed that she just rubbed the crumbs all over the table, never changing the position of the cloth. Dumb, I thought. When we sat at our booth there were crumbs spread all around and the seat was dirty with food in the corner. I cleaned both with a paper napkin. The women employees congregate in a booth and talk and laugh when theIr time should be used to do more cleaning. Our server kindly refilled my drink when needed, offered me a plastic bag for my leftovers and even bagged them. The motto of this review is: It is better to go to John's than starve. read more

I haven't tried a ton of menu items from John's, but only because the first I sampled, I fell in love with. I'm normally not the kind of girl to stick to one menu item because I like to know what I'm talking about and form a representative sample of the place. Bt=ut the first time I sunk my teeth into their giant breakfast burrito, custom made with only bacon, egg, cheese and hashbrown... with bacon and hashbrown crisp, I just can't bring myself to venture to another area of the menu and miss out on the that gigantic piece of heaven. In addition, they have fresh squeezed orange juice that is completely and utterly amazing slash refreshing. If that isn't enough, we often bring a bottle of champagne and make our own mimosas and although it's probably not allowed, they've never hassled us about it. Most restaurants around here, no matter how casual, charge a corkage fee which is definitely a rip-off considering the breakfast is usually less than the corkage. My family and I frequent the Johns in Palm Springs so we just assumed (I know right) that it would be the same. Think again. The place is dirty and I didn't even want to stay, but my family was hungry and the Panera a block over wasn't open yet. Our fries were cold and I just felt dirty sitting there. I couldn't wait to leave. I was just so shocked that the Johns in Palm Desert was so different than the Johns in Palm Springs. Stayed at the Holiday Inn nearby for Stagecoach. You can walk to John's from the Holiday Inn. The first time that we stopped in I tried their country fried steak & eggs breakfast. It was more than enough food, but it was really good. The second time that I ate there I had their french toast breakfast and it was just as yummy. Great menu at reasonable prices with plenty of food. With a large menu to chose from if you can't find something here to eat ...you might as well go home and serve yourself. read more

Visiting Indio for the first time while staying at WorldMark - my husband and I decided to take a drive down the 111 to find a place to get a quick, cheaper meal. We came upon John's and decided that they looked like a good place to try our luck. Upon entering, they reminded us a lot of Tom's Diner in that they have a huge menu with lots of options. You order at the counter & pay, take a seat & your number, and then they bring your meal within a few minutes. I ordered a sourdough bacon cheeseburger combo with a bowl of chili and my husband ordered a pastrami sandwich with a bowl of chili as well. The chili was actually pretty delicious and they provided plenty of crackers for both of our bowls. My husband's pastrami wasn't too bad either. However, my bacon cheeseburger was so burnt that it was all I could taste. Before I could even try the other side of my burger I found an EYELASH stuck to the cheese on my sandwich. Yuck. Additionally, the workers who took our order were not that friendly so we can't even say that our service was good. read more

John's was a surprise! The restaurant was clean and the service was fast and friendly. We stopped in to pick up some dinner and ordered salmon, a hamburger and a chorizo and egg burrito. Within ten minutes we had our entire order, and it was correct. Since our order was to go we knew that if we weren't happy there wasn't much that could be done once we left. Woke up this morning with a taste for fried chicken. Being new to Palm Desert, we had no idea where to go. Looked on Yelp and saw several positive reviews and thought, "OK, let's give John's a shot". My grandmother's fried is still the standard by which I judge any and every fried chicken that I have. I can't do it as well as she did all these years later, but mine is pretty good. I went into this experience hopeful. Getting there was easy enough. The fact that there was no one in the restaurant when we arrived didn't send any major red flags. We were warmly greeted and we ordered 2 fried chicken dinners and were hopeful when we were told that it would take 20 minutes (that means it's fresh, I thought). We ordered soup and salad and they came quickly enough. Even the $33 price tag though spendy was worth it for a good fried chicken meal. The soup I had was a bit bland and needed much salt and pepper to resemble vegetable beef with which I was familiar. The salad my husband had looked fresh (tip - order the dressing on the side). Then the meals came. I ordered the fried zucchini and he had french fries. The sides were hot but the steamed vegetables were not. The bread was toasted but not thoroughly enough for my taste. The star of the meal the chicken was very, very disappointing. It was hot, but they mixed corn meal with the flour which gives the chicken a popcorn taste that I don't like at all. The chicken was not seasoned at all. The portions were sizable, but the food was mediocre at best. It is an understatement to say that for $33 it was not worth it at all. We won't be going back to John's which is sad because I really wanted it to be great. Now I know why John's doesn't have a website. read more

The best diner breakfast in all of Palm Dessert. I have been coming here for almost 15 years and it's still just as good! Don't expect any frills at John's cause you ain't getting any! Order at the counter, sit down and wait for your feast to arrive! The menu is out of control large. I don't really care for their lunch fare, I only get one of two things there. The Huevos Rancheros! Like good sex! Refried beans, salsa verde, fried eggs and corn tortillas...sigh The french toast combo. Perfectly crunchy thick french toast with two eggs anyway you want them and yummy hash browns (ask for em crispy baby!). Oh and the pancakes ain't half bad either!
