After the disaster that was the Boardy Barn on Sunday, my friends and I opted for John Scott's Surf Shack. It's a cute little bar on Dune road, which is not pretentious or boogie, it's a good old bar with killer food...so I've been told, I didn't get to try any. With parking out front, patio seating with bay views to the back, and a lovely bartender from queens serving up great cocktails, it's a perfect spot for eating/drinking. The scene is casual so need to deck yourself out, there are families eating here so you may not want to get too rowdy during the day, not sure how it gets at night. This is a relaxing summer hang out spot when you want to cool off from the sun and have some margaritas, stuffed lobsters and sandwiches.They have indoor and outdoor seating and a view of the bay! Don't expect fancy flatware, wine glasses and gold trimmed plates. I appreciate that this is an unpretentious beach shack with a very laid back vibe. This place literally suck I felt like I was in a trashy neighborhood bar .. I was there with a group of 15 people asked the bar tender 3 times for a seltzer that I never received I then asked an employee to bring me a seltzer he literally got an attitude telling me they don't do that here and to go get my own drink !!! I'm a local whose been here too many times to count, each time it got worse. Both worst bar AND restaurant in the hamptons. Rude staff, DISGUSTING food, and very slow bar service. This weekend I went with some friends, not only was the bartender not wearing a mask, they were PLASTERED and didn't look in our direction for no joke at least 20 minutes of us standing there. I don't know how he didn't see us being that there were 5 of us along the bar, maybe because he was too busy high-fiving everyone else around us. Aren't we in a pandemic? I tried to like it being that I'm from the area and my friend would always drag me there for the scenery but this weekend was the straw that broke the camels back. How could I give anything less than 4 stars to the place where I witnessed the NJ Devils oust the Rangers from the playoffs, while surrounded by a bunch of clearly bandwagoning Rangers fans?? That's my first memory of John Scott's, and it's one that I'll be able to cherish for a long, long time. Not to say that I wouldn't have liked the place anyway. John Scott's is quite good for what it is - a place in the Hamptons with a surf shack feel, offering good food and strong drinks. I was here on Memorial Day weekend, which meant that as the nights wore on it got more and more crowded by people with a higher and higher douche quotient. But it was a good time nonetheless. First off, the food here is pretty damn good. We came here both Friday and Saturday night and loaded up massively on appetizers both times. The calamari is meaty and delicious, and probably just beats out the stuffed Quahog as my favorite of the bunch. The mussels, wings, buffalo mozzarella sticks and popcorn shrimp were all great as well, though (especially the sauce with the popcorn shrimp!). As for entrees, the buffalo popcorn shrimp wrap was very tasty though a bit low on the shrimp/lettuce ratio, the crab cakes were delicious, and the cajun chicken wrap fantastic - all surprisingly flavorful for a place that I had initially assumed would be putting out very standard fare to help absorb copious amounts of alcohol. Oh, that's right, alcohol. They certainly do that well here, too. If you're starting the night off slowly, the beer choices on hand are reasonably solid - it's certainly not craft beer central, but they've got enough bottles of Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada, and Saranac to keep a beer snob such as myself content. And when you're ready to move on to liquor (and, let's be real, you probably came here to get drunk), they will certainly not skimp on the liquor. For whatever reason I settled on Jack and ginger ale as my go-to drink for the weekend, and my hangover on Saturday morning tells me that they certainly were heavy on the Jack. While this place definitely got crowded, I still enjoyed myself quite a bit. It wasn't too hard for me and my friends to etch out some space to hang out, and others people here were generally pretty friendly and not too hard to start up a conversation with. Definitely worth stopping in for some food and/or drink if you're in the area. read more

Well, I can agree I didn't have a great experience here. There were also some good things. I will just run down the pros and the cons. Pros First, the pros. The clam chowder was fantastic and the service was pretty friendly. The lobster was also good, and the ambiance really felt like summer. I came on a Tuesday, so the kids menu was free with the purchase of a drink. They had live music. Inside, at the bar, they were playing different music, and the outdoor music was... Ok. Cons My brother got a hot dog, which is a definitely a big con. It looked like coal, and it tasted like ash. He had to pick the flesh clear off the dog, and resulted in a gross skinless hot dog that wasn't that good. By far, my least favorite thing was the mosquitos. I, writing this review the next morning, have at least 10 uncomfortable bug bites. It was like a cloud of mosquitos. Not good. Over all, I didn't have a very good time here. read more

John Scott's is a local favorite, and it is definitely touristy "in season." The food is very good, the view is awesome, the music a nice touch and it feels very beach towny. Be prepared for a wait and it's not cheap. But if you are a first timer to WHB or are renting during the season, it is a must on your destination list. read more

Went last weekend for night out. The bartender service was awful. The bartender was rude, was spraying people down. People were not social distancing in their pods. This one bartender "Woody" had no mask on, was overserved, and was high fiving everyone...we are in a pandemic and he took forever to serve drinks. Won't return for a long time! read more

This cute little joint is right by the beach, you can always take a quick walk there for lunch. They have an indoor and outdoor seating. Food was really good, nothing fancy. I had a jerk steak with fries, it was really good! My boyfriend had the steam platter, came with lots of mussels, lobster and little neck clams. On the weekends they have a nice band playing good songs. The service was lacking a bit. My friend ended up getting a hair in her food, it took almost 30 minutes for the waitress to come to our table and take care of the issue. read more

Came here with my family since they hadn't had good seafood all summer. There was a fundraising going on the night we went so things were crazy but got seated very quickly. Didn't like the fact that we couldn't be sedated because my dad was still in the car waiting to find a spot. But their FIRECRACKER SHRIMP is to die for. Absolutely amazing. It's a Tuesday at 4pm, my 2 young children and husband and I tried to sit in the outdoor section, there was only 3 tables occupied in the whole restaurant. The hostess tells us we need to buy masks (for $5 each which is a slap in the face). We ask if we can walk around the restaurant to our table so we don't have to pass the 1 table in the way. Were told no. My husband goes in maskless to buy 4 masks for us while the rude bartender says "i don't know if you've heard, but there's a pandemic" and makes him wait over 10 minutes at the bar (while maskless), we finally leave. John Scott's was a 4 out of 5 for me this fine evening. First let me start with the pros: 1) The atmosphere is amazing. Great beach-bar vibes. 2) Their bottled beer is ice cold. 3) They serve Landshark and we all know Landshark is the greatest beer on earth. Now let's get to the things that could be improved: 1) They need a happy hour special 2) They should incorporate more seafood into their menu, I mean for gods sake you could throw a football into the ocean from the restaurant it's so close 3) How about a raw bar? I don't really understand the rave reviews for this place. I went here twice and both times I had the same experience. The food is mediocre-at best. I went here yesterday with my boyfriend. It wasn't that crowded. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. We sat outside which was nice. It took about 15 minutes for someone to take our order. Our waitress came and we knew what we wanted. Two lobster rolls, a shrimp cocktail, a sprite and a corona. That was it. My boyfriend asked for the food to come out all together. Pretty easy order you would think, right? 10 minutes later our shrimp came out. It didn't taste that fresh, but it was still okay.. We finished that THEN our drinks came out. A few minutes later our lobster rolls came out. It would have been nice to get our drinks first like they should have, and our food brought together like asked. The lobster roll was, again. Okay. I've had way better for half the price. I was half way through my beer and the whole time I thought it tasted funny. That's when I realized it was a corona light. I didn't even bother saying anything since I drank most of it, and our waitress never came to see how everything was. The bill was 78 dollars. That seems extreme for what we got. I won't be back a third time. It's a shame because the place is cute and they sure do have a prime location, however that doesn't make up for overpriced average food and poor service. read more

Went here on the second to last night of the season. The hostess was pleasant, seated us promptly and asked if we were happy with the table. We opted to sit outside as it was a beautiful evening and there was loud music inside. The waitress came over to us right away and took our drink order. My husband and I both ordered the lobster roll on gluten free roll. The waitress let me know that the fries are cooked in a frier that is used for wheat so I knew to order a salad instead. I got corn salad on the side and it was good. The lobster roll was great! Really stuffed with lobster. This is this most generous lobster roll I've had and that's exactly what you want when you order a lobster roll! Tasted great too. I would eat it again next time I'm in town. read more

The service was horrible. Mean worker who gave us attitude with each interaction we had. Got order wrong not once but twice. OFFERED us waters then as my group is walking out says "Don't forget your water bill." Last but not least, the woman took my friends phone to charge, originally a good idea turned into a nightmare because she "forgot she had it." After arguing with the woman she finally realizes she did indeed take the phone and gave it back to us with a disrespectful look. Drink refiller's beware! One Star is for the view. It's a beautiful view and this restaurant has little to no competition so it will continue to thrive. My issue with a place like this is that they're just not do my their best. They know there's little competition, they know the view is pretty, so they do the bare minimum. I don't mind an up-charge for waterfront dining; what I do mind is being blatantly gouged for non alcoholic drinks. $3.50 for a 12 oz plastic cup of ice tea! That's a high price for ice tea-but- I wouldn't have noticed the price if they hadn't charged me for a refill (without telling me btw). You got it folks, that's $7 for two mediocre ice teas. John Scott's is the most affordable place to drink on Dune Road. They have a decent beer list and the mixed drinks are very strong. What more can you ask for? The food isn't bad either. If you have been spending the better part of your summers out east like myself then you don't need any introduction to the beach bar stalwart known locally as "Scott's". The diversity of this establishment requires separate consideration for both dining and binge drinking. First the dining: Pros Adequate parking - you will have no trouble finding a spot for your yellow land rover defender that is perfectly sprinkled with sand from cupsogue beach after a wicked session of offroading. Note I only offroad there, I lay out at Rogers because that's where the best waves are. Decor - high density hard plastic table upgrades, and a multitude of sponsor themed umbrellas including aqua de pana, San pelligrino and the champagne of beers provide an optimal environment for sporting your fresh off road induced tan complimented by your vilebrequin swim trunk (4 inch inseam), frog skins and vintage v neck. Note don't drift too far out into the marsh if you're wearing rainbow flops. Food - three letters BSW! Buffalo Shrimp Wrap. Crispy fries and an Arnie round out my go to meal. The mint chocolate chip rice crispy doesn't live up to its billing. Note outdoor port a pottys and BSWs go together like white after Labor Day. Grab a side of franks red hot and take that BSW to go. While some of the less experienced Scott's patrons are in it for the long haul I prefer to take a leisurely drive down dune road to my conveniently located, quaint yet comfortable 12 bedroom 8.5 bathroom ocean front cottage. The family has been coming out to the "beach box" for decades and it provides a great place to throw an epic bonfire with 50 of closest friends. I like to shower up al fresco - frosted glass, teak wood and sunset. I keep my Oakley's on the entire time. No Rosé available at Scott's so open up a bottle of Wolfer's finest as you prepare to make your late night return. Leave the Tod's driving mocs in your shoe closet, things are gonna get messy. Been going to John Scott's for over 30 years . To all you complaining interlopers.." F off" . I hope its always sticky, smells like beer and never changes. Quite frankly, it's " fancy" menu items like lobster rolls ( yummy) is change too much for me but Not complaining cause they taste really good. It's a local place and not for tourists. My husband and I have spent hundreds of dollars at this highly mediocre excuse for a fish shack over the last 3 years (we thought we enjoyed the atmosphere, despite overpriced dry seafood) - until last night...When Glenn, the guy checking IDs at the door, decided to stop my husband as he walked in to tell him that he HAD to button one more button on his sweater. We were with a couple friends and we were all pretty astounded. We thought he must have been kidding, because WHAT PERSON CARES about a customer's sweater buttons.... It was unreal, honestly. My husband said "seriously?" as he buttoned up another button, but Glenn must have been feeling more insecure than usual last night, when he decided we could not have dinner there because of the way my husband "spoke to him." I couldn't comprehend that he was serious (it was one of the most bizarre power trips I've ever seen) but it was clear he was extremely upset, unstable and insecure. Clearly euro v necks make the guy very uncomfortable, and can deem someone ineligible to eat seafood. Well, we'll certainly never go there again, even though we have a house around the corner, and will never allow anyone we know to go there, because of Glenn. Mill House, Out of the Blue (best lobster rolls and seafood) and Dockers just won all our business. Side note - Glenn also likes to write fake 5 star reviews on John Scott's across the web. We have been coming here for years. The steamers are excellent and fresh. They do run out sometimes. That is my only complaint. The lobster roll is great and on the larger size as lobster rolls go. The wings are terrific and Monday nights are 10 cent wing nite. Super casual and fun. There is also live music sometimes at night. A great view of the bay. Worst service at any restaurant I've ever been to. The waiter was so disrespectful and I have never been so appalled by a restaurant in my life. Her name was MJ and was the rudest waiter for no reason. Our bill was $237 and we were charged over $400 on our credit cards and when we tried to rectify the situation and was making fun of us and she stuck the finger at us. The other waiters explained that she can get away with us because she is related to the owner. I am repulsed by the behavior and I will never come back to this restaurant. They denied my friends and I at the door after seeing IDs from different states. They are not able to check IDs from Kentucky, Louisiana, and Florida. They told us that scanning them wouldn't prove anything- we showed other credit cards, student IDs and even social security cards. My wife and I have been coming here for about 3 years now and we really enjoy the atmosphere, food, and staff - and don't mind the decent prices either . Our affection for this quaint little fish shack grew even fonder when last night, Glenn, the guy checking IDs at the door made a passing comment on my outfit. "Dope shoes, bro" he said, and my heart nearly melted. I have frequented many nightclubs and bars in the Hampton bays area all my life, but have never been approached with such a friendly and positive attitude by any other ID checker. Only a guy who feels utterly confident in himself doesn't mind calling out another guy's swaggy outfit. Clearly Yeezys don't make Glenn feel uncomfortable. Needless to say, Glenn's compliment on my shoes absolutely set the tone for the rest of my night. In fact, a few hours into the night I was sipping my beer and noticed Glenn outside near the ID checking area, leaning on the fence. We made eye contact, he smiled and gave me a thumbs up. Awesome. I love this place. Thank you for making me feel so welcomed. Outside of some weirdo who had the nerve to waltz around in an unbuttoned euro v neck sweater was the only detriment to the overall ambience of the evening. He was even asked to humbly button up his shirt but refused. If it weren't for this guy's contentiousness, this might've been the best night of my life.
