We have been coming to Carino's for some years now. Due to COVID, we haven't been able to come as much so we were a bit hesitant to come today. There wasn't a lot of people when we arrived but only one waitress. We thought we wouldn't get the best service because of this BUT BOY WAS I WRONG. Our waitress, Belle, was AMAZING. Her being alone didn't impede her from her duties. Empty glass? not for long! Chili flakes? Here ya go! She was amazing. There used to be a location in Whittier that I used to go to all the time. When it closed, I was told of this location. I've been coming here on and off for a few years. However, things seem to be declining by degrees here. I've never eaten in the dining room, always in the bar area. They used to have really awesome daily drink specials. The prices on those have been going up steadily, so it isn't much of a value anymore. Still, the food is decent enough to warrant a return. The downfall of this restaurant is the service. Sometimes you get an awesome waiter, while other times you get someone who who should consider a career change. On my last trip, there was four people in my group. Everyone ordered something different: pizza, pasta, salad, and I ordered an appetizer of their boneless chicken wings. Everyone had their food come out at roughly the same time, except for mine. You would think an appetizer they just throw in a fryer would be the easiest thing to prepare. We asked about it, and the waiter told us they would be right out. Everyone started eating, but my food never came out. After the others were done eating and having their dishes cleared out, my basket of wings came to the table. You could tell they had been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile, they were all rubbery. The waiter stopped by to drop off the check and made no apology for the extended wait, nor did he offer to comp it off the bill like other restaurants do when an instance like this occurs. I informed him the wings were inedible and I would like them taken off the check. He tried to make an excuse that he couldn't do it, he would have to get the manager involved. He went and ordered me another one. Nachos came late, I was informed by the waiter that another waiter took it to another table, and another one was on its way. I saw the second nachos leave the kithen and it was offered to a table in front of us which they denied, then this other waiter proceeded to our table and apologized. Then the bill, I was charged twice for the burger, but they eventually took it out and comped the nachos. My wifes pasta and calamari was ok. Overall dinner sucked, I ate my wifes left over while waiting and took the rest to go. I can tell this was a management issues as the employees were not knowledgeable about reading tickets, not aware of table numbers, even the cook does not know how to cook its meat the way it was ordered. read more

I'm so glad I found this place. I used to go to another (now closed) location regularly. I had the Skilletini. I'd forgotten how much I love this dish. The service was good. Could have been a little faster with the food, but the place is about 3/4 full today so I can't complain too much. I know I'll be back again. I hadn't been back in a while so I decided today would be that day. However when I arrived the first thing I noticed was that their food safety rating had been downgraded to a "B". They had three different pasta's, one with an alfredo looking sauce, and another with a meat sauce maybe, then lasagna. Also included was salad and sourdough bread.. it was okay this day but when i order something myself it's truly spectacular. It's located in the Downey Landing center in Downey close to Spa Envy so the parking is wide open and plentiful. The restaurant is clean and nice and the wait staff is really accommodating. Idk what's their low rating for but they're not that bad. It's a chain restaurant so it's a cookie cutter Italian restaurant. I've gone here a couple of times for lunch with 10+ coworkers and the service was good. I find that usually chain restaurants aren't good at handling big parties of people but I haven't yet had a problem with that at Johnny Carino's. They had 2 people juggling the service with us so it was just fine. Plus we ordered a day ahead and by the time we got there they put our order into the kitchen so it would come out in a timely fashion. The bread is yeasty, soft, and warm. It comes with olive oil and little fried garlic pieces or balsamic vinegar if you wish. The pizza is better than little Caesars, Pizza Hut, etc. but it's not better than quality pizza places that specialize in pizzas. Their pastas are good but not awesome. I didn't even know this place existed until today. Chain Restaurant: -1 Poor Service: -1 Food Taste: +3 We had a Prime Rib Combo plate that was pretty decent. Bread and garlic oil were served first and their bread is damn good. Wine selection wasn't that great but they had BlackStone which I have grown fond of as my cheap go-to Merlot...so I was happy. I don't know what the heck kind of music they were playing, but it wasn't Italian and it wasn't pleasing to the ear. Made me want to throw my bread roll at my server and ask for them to change it... then I realized how yummy my roll was and I reverted to eating again. FYI: They offer a "buy 5 meals and get one free" card, so do yourself a favor and get that. Also, on Tuesdays, they stamp 2 instead of one meal on your card. Go three times and you get a free dinner. Not bad at all. Pasta was ok. Nothing fancy and nothing all WOW like with thoughts of oral orgasms... but decent nonetheless. It's been a long time since we've been here (~8 years) so we thought to give it another chance. It was a busy Sunday night and took 20 minutes to be seated (which is normal for most places). Issue 1 was the front person wrote my name down badly so "Paul" became "Dave". If I were not next to the desk, we would have been skipped over. Next, we ordered our drinks (teas) and an appetizer along with our dinner. When 25 minutes had went by, I asked about the appetizers, figuring that we could eat those before our dinner. We get those another 10 minutes later. (35 minutes since we've been seated) Another 25 minutes later, our dinner still hasn't arrived, so I inquire about it and am told the kitchen is running slow. Other tables with more people have been server and they're also complaining about the food since half of their tables were served and they had to wait another 20 minutes for the other half to get food. At this stage, I tell the waitress, just bill me for what I was actually served and we'll leave. I'll never go to that location again. read more

I've been to Johnny's a couple of times and the only reason I go is because of their happy hour specials ($3 Lagunitas) and to watch my Clippers kick some ass. The food is a-ok. I've had their boneless wings, they "aight". Cesar Salad was pretty good as well. The bar section is pretty spacious. They have plenty of TV's which I do enjoy. Like everyone else have mentioned, their service is not the greatest. I know COVID is going on and things change often, but you don't need to lie to your customers. After many years of avoiding this place, I called tonight to place an order to support my local restaurants. The lady that answered the phone was nice and all, but she flat out lied. Both Google and Yelp say this restaurant was open till 10pm. The lady on the phone says they closed at 8:30. I asked why they are not updating any of their info online, and she says due to COVID, neither Google or Yelp are allowing updates to hours because it is only temporary. I'm sorry but I run multiple retail stores and a restaurant and I personally ensure my store hours are changed. It can be done! At least be honest and say we don't care if our customers show up and we are already closed. Maybe I'll give this restaurant a try in another three years. read more

Got a big platter and they give you two forks ? No napkins a lot of potato wedges and no ketchup. BBQ and no bbq sauce ? Didn't even offer anything , just here take your food and leave. I've given place several tries before posting my review. The food is fine for a corporate, white bread kind of restaurant. I just don't understand why the service is ALWAYS so slow. I've made it a point not to go during peak times because I know it can be too noisy and crowded. So when I walk in to a deserted room I do expect to be seated quickly. And I expect a server to come by and at least acknowledge my arrival. Knowing my server doesn't have a lot of other people to tend to, I expect water refills and check in, too. Just never happens that way at this location. So, I continue to go because their Garlic Jalapeño Tilapia is bomb and I've never found it anywhere else. Came wth coworkers for lunch on Friday and it was pretty quiet. Were seated right away, and they placed the hoagie bread loaf with their oil on the table. This is delicious! Seven years later, I decided to come back for a repeat performance. The food was much better than I remembered. At first I was disappointed in the calamari. When it arrived at the table, it was light in color, and I assumed that it was going to be soggy and flavorless. This wasn't the case, however; even though I prefer my calamari to be crispy and covered with lemon, this version wasn't half bad either. The seafood fettucini had a good flavor, and the accompanying shrimp were large, tender, and delicious. I can't speak for the muscles, because I don't like those and my mom ate them all. The spicy romano chicken was also a pleasant entree. Instead of bowtie pasta, we substituted penne. The sauce was tasty, and I enjoyed it. At the end of the meal, a waitress came by with a birthday cake, but she didn't sing "happy birthday." She didn't even say "happy birthday," which was weird. The cake was great, and the accompanying ice cream was also lovely. I guess I was just looking for something a little more for my mother's day. read more

They weren't even discreet about it. The services/waiters are rude. You can tell they don't want to be there. You can tell they hate their job. Second, the food is disgusting. It seems liked everything was frozen. I order the tortellini pasta and some of it was still frozen! The fettuccine pasta taste bland according to my sister and the lasagna was terrible. My little brothers order a pizza and it took almost 2 hours long. They got their pizza when everybody was doing eating. The place wasn't even packed there was only 5 other tables in total. My server was Andrea and she did a great job, I truly enjoy a person that is attentive at doing their job. Never once needed anything. Tried their Sicilian Fire Sticks, they had a bit of a kick, not spicy hot but spicy delicious. They are basically a taquito but with bacon, cheese, Italian sausage, chicken, roma tomatoes, jalapeños & cheeses. They offer two dipping sauces that compliment these sticks, marinara and ranch sauce. My friend and I split two meals to enjoy a little bit of everything. She chose the Spicy Shrimp and Chicken and I ordered the Pecan-Crusted Chicken Salad. The Pecan_Crusted Chicken salad was pretty good, combination or spinach, gorgonzola, applewood smoked bacon and warm vinaigrette tasted so good. I also tried the Spicy Shrimp and Chicken pasta and it too was good, penne pasta with cayenne pepper romano cream sauce, mushrooms, and sun dried tomatoes, delicious, wanted more, but I was way to full to continue, Italian food is very hearty. I doubt I will return to this Carinos since it is in Downey, I don't frequent these parts of Los Angeles, but I do know where to find good service and good food. read more
