Seems to me that a lot of people are dunking on this place and I don't really know why. Is it because it's pricey? It's Santana Row. What do you expect? Still, the poke place Johnny Doughnuts replaced was mid anyway. Replacing mid with mid isn't a win or a loss. But I like this place. Every time I've come, the doughnuts cane dewy and they have a nice flakey texture to go with their sweetness. The soft serve and coffee I've had here is nice too. So excited to see Johnny Doughnuts in San Jose! I remember getting these when I lived in the city, and the doughnuts are just as I remembered--HUGE. I grabbed the Lemon Blueberry doughnut. The flavors were a little lighter than I remembered, but it was still good, with a slightly dense texture. I decided to give this place a try after hearing about a new donut shop on Santana Row opening up. We were greeted by the owner Johnny himself and he was extremely friendly. However, the donuts themselves were pricey. I decided to order the -Guava Donut (Vegan) This was recommended to me by Johnny. The total came out to $7 and I had high hopes but unfortunately came a little short. The frosting was tasty but the donuts themselves were stale and had a layer of grease on the bottom which made every bite greasy and unappetizing. This may be because the donuts were sitting out but otherwise I'm not too sure. By the time I was halfway through the donut, I felt myself getting sick. I love johnnys doughnuts as I used to frequent their location in pac heights so I was so happy they opened one at Santana Row! I got to try the sprinkle glazed doughnut and their lemonade. The lemonade was a bit light on the lemon flavor and I tasted more sparkling water than lemon juice. Came here on Monday morning right around opening. I saw that it was new and I had to give it a try! There was a great variety of donuts and drinks to choose from. We've been to other locations (Larkspur and Santa Rosa) and can confirm that the quality and taste are consistent. Doughnuts here are not cheap and they offer a unique texture. They're a bit more firm and have more of a bite. I wouldn't consider them to be airy, as they are more dense - as if it was made out of whole wheat flour. Nevertheless, I appreciate the unique flavors and that, in general, their glazes/flavors are on the "less sweet" end of the spectrum. It's easier to eat because it doesn't feel sickly sweet and are not oily or greasy at all. My go to order is the maple old fashioned and the apple fritter. I've only been to this location once, but I really enjoyed the flavor and interior texture of the fritter. It was like a soft and moist muffin interior with plenty of cinnamon blended in. It was lacking the crisp/crunchy exterior, but I'm not sure if it was just that day or if that's their style. Due to the price point, Johnny Doughnuts is more of a once in a while treat, especially given the plethora of other more affordable donut shops in the area. read more

Pretty and good. But not necessarily pretty good. They are big and beautiful, handcrafted donuts. Perhaps more style than substance, which makes them the Santana Row of donuts. They're Row-nuts. This won't replace our normal place, but it's a nice splurge. I think I prefer the hard, shiny, almost beetle-like old school apple fritters to their tasty but bready ones. The salted caramel old fashioned was yummy, but we didn't taste salt or caramel: it tasted like spice cake. Yummy but maybe miscarried. It was a faux-nut. I was so excited to hear that Johnny Doughnuts finally opened at Santana Row. When I stopped by yesterday there was no line, so I knew my visit was off to a good start. And my lime poppyseed donut was SO delicious! It is a very unique donut in the sense that they use potato flour in their recipe. Which means the donut is NOT greasy at all. When I arrived, the cashier was very friendly. The lime poppyseed caught my eye because the flavor is sounded so creative! I was so excited after receiving and opening the bag. The first bite was heavenly. I loved how the tart lime icing wasn't overly sweet, and the doughnut itself had such a unique texture to it. Add in the occasional crunch with the poppyseed and I was sold. I ate my doughnut while walking around the Row, which was perfect on a sunny June Saturday. I really liked the strawberry doughnut flavor! The dough itself was a little bit chewy though, not sure if it would taste the same if it was freshly made. I'd be curious to try the vegan ones. I saw a guava flavor. I also ordered a decaf iced vanilla latte and it looked a bit watered down, but surprisingly, the flavor was pretty good and it didn't taste watered down at all. I had read about Johnny Doughnuts opening in Santana Row and saw that they had somewhat of a reputation in Marin County and with the Food Network. As a doughnut lover, I was excited and decided to give it a try on a Sunday morning when I was free. The tagline in my Yelp profile is "what you don't see what your eyes, don't invent with your mouth." Despite reading the mediocre reviews for this place, I still somehow thought that my experience might be different. At almost $5 a donut, I expected said donut to be at the very least as good as one I could get from Krispy Kreme. I don't mean to sound dramatic but this doughnut was probably one of the worst I have eaten and I am not joking. It was not even a situation where I was eating some basic doughnut with a "Santana Row markup" price. I almost felt as if I was eating a dinner roll with some glaze on top. Perhaps the Marin location serves up better doughnuts but I can say with certainty that this Johnny Doughnuts location most definitely does not live up to the hype. I am still truly shocked at how terrible these doughnuts tasted. I usually never give a review of less than 3 stars unless it's a truly horrendous experience (usually because of some issue with service) but it took A LOT for me not to break that rule with this place. Hmm... Sadly, on this visit donuts not so great. Yeast donuts are bready/dough-y and heavy-ish. Old fashioned donut was dry, burnt tasting, but clearly hand made-like a donut bracelet. Raspberry filling was plentiful and fresh, definitely not artificial jelly. These are donuts on a mission to be wholesome and use locally sourced ingredients. My wife and I were so excited about a new doughnut shop opening on Santana Row. Stan's is our favorite but it's a bit out of the way. We got 4 doughnuts which came out to a little over $20.00. Expensive but we like to try new things and if the doughnuts were good, we'd consider it worth the money. Long story short, we were really disappointed with our experience. The doughnuts were unlike any other we've ever tried, and not in a good way. They had almost the same consistency as bread as they were dry and very dense. The glazed doughnut had almost no flavor, the sprinkle with vanilla glaze had a chemical-like taste, the chocolate Bismarck filling had a thick and chunky consistency rather than a smooth cream filling, and the raspberry filled was just all around poor quality. As I said before, we spent $20.00 on these doughnuts and ended up throwing them out after trying them. These doughnuts LOOK amazing but the taste is just not worth the money. The doughnuts from the bakery department at any grocery store would be a better choice. On top of the poor quality, the service was not great. The workers don't seem very happy to be there and were not very friendly. A doughnut shop on Santana Row was bound to well. Yet, every time I walk by there's no line and it never seems like there's more than one or two people there. Went to check out Johnnys Doughnuts at Santana Row to find out what all of he hype was about. Heard they had gluten free doughnuts. They only had one type of GF doughnuts and when I asked if they were fryed in their own oil, was told no, all the doughnuts are fryed in the same oil. This is cross contamination and are no longer gluten free. This is a problem for people with celiac and should never be listed as gluten free. read more

Usually we roll to Stans for donuts but my daughters and I decided to give this place a try this morning. Unique flavor combinations make this place special - zebra, lemon poppyseed, coffee cake donuts, etc. great selection. The donuts were heavy, breadier than a typical donut but delicious. I did take one star off because the two individuals working the register and assembling the orders seemed to not know what the selection was and seemed in a state of confusion. I was excited to try this place when it was first announced. I'd seen their location in SF but never got to try it. It took over a poke place at the Plaza de Valencia area of Santana Row. I came after some yoga nearby. A donut is like my little treat after working out. I looked at their display. And decided on a regular maple bar. They had some interesting combos but I decided on a classic for my first time. No prices were shown also. So I balked a bit when they told me the price. $5.50 for one donut. That's crazy right? I was expecting the best damn donut at that price. I split it with my husband. I was a good donut - similar as what I could get at the donut shop down the road from my house. Amazing - no. Worth $5+ - definitely no.Maybe they use premium or organica ingrediants, bbut I don't know if I could taste the difference.
