I wasn't sure what to think based on the mixed reviews, but this is must stop for anyone wanting great service and premium food! We thought it was going to take forever to get seated but the host made it happen in 10 minutes on a packed Friday night. The Grecian half chicken was so amazing! It was melt in your mouth juicy and that sauce is perfectly garlicky! Everyone at the table got some form of the chicken and raved about it. I celebrated my 29th year anniversary at Johnny's Kitchen. The food was delicious. I didn't get the waitress name but she was outstanding. We didn't have to ask for any refill on drinks and she always kept us updated on our meal. (table 11) The soup of the day was cream of rice. Went to Johnnys before Covid and loved the place. We decided to go there this week and was so dissapointed in the quality given the price of the food that I will never go back. Salad was $$ and was romaine leaves with a few pieces of feta cheese, half radish and a thin slice pf pepper. The chicken looked like it was cooked hours ago. Chicken Alfredo was mostly noodles in a gooey sauce with a few round pieces of chicken for $23!!!! Avoid this place. read more

Where to begin? Let's start with mediocre food--Olive Garden quality but much higher prices. Add overcrowded space--and that doesn't take into account that we're still dealing with the pandemic. As for the pandemic, we asked why the staff wasn't wearing masks--and they said they didn't have to. (Which isn't true.) Throw in badly performed music played at unsafely loud levels (even the staff complained, but the management did nothing). I might add that the performer began his set by saying that if you had requests to keep them to yourself, and if you thought he was playing too loudly you should leave--how's that for making guests feel welcome? We have been coming here for a long time. Yesterday we encountered three different things that we were surprised by. First, we felt rushed. We were waiting for a friend and was asked if we wanted to order at least every three minutes. He knew we were waiting. We felt pressure even though the restaurant was at least half empty. Second, they now charge you to use a credit card. I used cash instead, but was surprised that I did not receive any coins back- but they rounded the bills up to the next whole number (40-34.02=5 back). Not bad but not good. Very dark inside. We had a great sever though! Ordered a burger with fries, ribs and chicken, and an appetizer. Appetizer was okay, calamari not that good, wings didn't have any flavor like didn't taste like anything and the potato skins were tough, thin filling, covered in hard cheese. Burger was decent, was missing some requested items, fries were delicious! Ribs were good, chicken again didn't taste like anything, no butter for the baked potato but lots of uncooked chopped bacon veggies weren't even steamed all the way. London Broil was a bit over cooked and chewy. Salad was typical. Wood roasted chicken was phenomenal along with the potatoes. The service was great and attentive. Overall, not a bad spot for a lunch beer (although the cocktails were heavy on ice) and a quick bite. read more

We use to be regulars at Johnnys and we moved farther away and hadn't been there in awhile. We were in the area again and wanted to try it as we really like the food. Unfortunately, this trip was disappointing. We ordered a slab of ribs and a the whole wood smoked chicken. Both items were very dry and way overcooked. And even though had sauce it didn't help. I'm hoping this review will inform the owners to pay closer attention to what is being served as I would like the restaurant to improve. Our server was also not very friendly as he didn't say more than a few words, just dropped things off and disappeared even though it was a quiet night with very few tables. A quick check-in would have been nice. And lastly, they charge an extra 3% for credit cards AND debit cards. Pretty much all the restaurants are now charging that 3% for credit cards but not for debit cards because they should not be getting charged by the bank for a debit card since it's basically a cash transfer. I really want to wish this restaurant success and hope they're able to change things from this review. read more

The time was right and I came by to try their happy hour offering. If you sit at the bar or the high tops by the bar, the beers are $3 and they have a "bar bites" menu for $7.95. The bites menu is not too extensive (items such as chicken tenders, quesadillas, etc). I had a pint of Murphy's Irish stout and their basic 1/2 lb cheeseburger (with a small cole slaw). The burger and food offerings were in the ok range. The Happy Hour beer pricing is nice and with an OK selection, but there's also plenty of competing Happy Hours in the area. The spot's food is fine that's what I would say. It's not great it's not horrible. If you are over the age of 65 you'll fit right in. It kind of reminds me of an old fashion supper club. If you're in a pinch for a decent meal it's a great place to go but if you're looking for quality and don't mind driving a little further I would pass. read more

We've been long time customers of Johnny's. Went this week for lunch and the experience was... okay. The restaurant was largely empty and service was adequate but inattentive. Food was middling to good. The fact that this restaurant charges a credit card fee this late into covid is problematic in my opinion. Most folks do not carry $100+ dollars in cash, which is what a meal for 2-3 people costs without alcohol. I get it that restaurants incur credit card company fees, but passing that cost onto your customers seems disingenuous when clearly this and other establishments have also raised prices. It fills the gap between diner and supper club, appealing to families and retirees (not so much to River North foodies). It's popular with groups for celebrating special occasions. The softly lit decor of the two dining rooms with a bar in between is dated but comfortable. We have been 'regulars' here for quite some time. Over the years, the food and service have been consistently good and the value is on the plus side. Johnny's menu is strong on basic steaks, chops, ribs, pasta, and sandwiches. Additional items together with fresh fish and seafood appear on the daily specials menu. On our most recent visit, the list featured 'supper club'-style 3-course meals (including soup or salad and a full-size dessert) for less than $20. We ordered the pork chops (2) and Parmesan crusted tilapia from this menu. Our entrees arrived perfectly cooked and the portions were generous. On weekends when Johnny's is going full tilt, the kitchen occasionally stumbles. This time, it was a puddle of water at the bottom of a salad and a side of steamed veggies with virtually raw carrots . But the attentive servers willingly fix any problems and fulfill special requests. read more

Staff was friendly and attentive. The old fashioned drinks were watered down so we switched to beer. The ribs description on the menu hooked me. Sadly, they tasted like leftovers. Pauline was our server for the evening and she was phenomenal. She was great at guiding us through the menu, ensured that the prime rib was cooked to preference. She is very attentive , professional, great hospitality, and friendly. The prime rib was tender and the fascia was broken down with minimal chewing. Chicken was chargrilled was terrific. Johnny's is part of Dining Out Enterprises, a small collection of diverse cuisine outlets in the NW suburbs of Chicago. Johnny's is noted for wood-grilled foods, including rotisserie chickens, steaks, and daily specials. Full bar, take-out, and catering is available as well. I'm making one more swing through the Upper Midwest before the snow flies and I make my hasty retreat to warmer climes for the winter. I've had the privilege, luck of eating in some of the finest restaurants on the planet, but when it's my money, there's no finer meal than a good Club House sandwich and a cup of coffee. The (choice of white or wheat) toast was perfect, the turkey thick sliced and oven roasted, the bacon and lettuce crisp. Home cut fries were fried and seasoned to perfection. My dinner mate went with the 8 oz burger, cooked precisely as ordered, with a big beefy taste of a quality grind. Service was great, the amply-sized room can seat a crowd, and the atmosphere is generally subdued. A perfect tryst rendezvous. Off-street parking. Came all the way from Chicago to stay away from the craziness of July 4th. Stopped at this place to take a good amount of food back to my hotel. Did not disappoint. On a recent lunch visit it was not good at all..except the chicken which was hot, juicy and very flavorful. The baked onion soup was luke warm and lacked flavor. The ruben was one of the worst ever, very little corned beef and a peculiar tasting sauce. I know that you don't go to a Greek joint for a ruben but at least make an effort to make a good one. The chicken dish had flavorless garlic mashed potatoes and seriously over cooked old broccoli. I thought possibly that it was an off day but maybe this explains the lack of people having lunch there. Nice average neighborhood place. Menu has a lot of variety and usually you can find something that you would like to eat. Not all items were good though. I would recommend their wood oven chicken. You get a half chicken that is seasoned well and juicy. I got it with a side of fries but they came unsalted and are just average. All meals come with a soup of salad. I had the french onion soup for a upcharge. The cheese and croutons were good but the broth was a little weak. Not enough salt or sweetness to it. My husband had the french onion burger and said the meat had no flavor to it. Average burger. This is an mediocre old school supper club place. Wow ! Wow ! Wow ! WOW! Today I ordered the Thursday special for 2. Full meal for $24.95. Roasted Rotisserie Pork. Wasn't expecting much for that price. Surprise!! Plenty of food for 2 or more. Mashed potatoes, gravy, apple sauce, bread, a salad, and a large amount of sliced pork. But the best part ? It was absolutely delicious!! I have eaten there before and enjoyed it. This however is simply amazing. I highly recommend it! We called in the order, paid by card (Don't forget to tip!!) And picked up curbside by calling from parking lot. Visiting Johnny's usually has been a treat and never disapointing for us. We recently had 2 lunches. One was very good, but the full rack of ribs were a bit dry. It may have been that they were prepared previously and re-heated. And, to their credit, they were very lean, which may also have contributed. At any rate, we are not dissuaded. I don't know what the previous review is talking about, because we ordered the Thanksgiving meal for takeout tonight and it was fantastic. Everything was fresh and tasty: Salad, turkey (really good!), gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. The only thing that was not 5 stars was the pumpkin pie. It was pre-baked in a box like at the store. Still tasted very good but not 5-stars good. I probably could have thrown it in the oven for a few minutes to heat it up some. But overall the meal was top notch. It was a big hit with everyone. We may be ordering again for Christmas. read more

I'm not quite sure why I have not dined at Johnny's sooner when it is just in Glenivew but I'm glad that I finally did. Better late than never right? I was craving for steak on a Friday night to end the long and hectic work week but I did not want to go to a fancy shmancy steakhouse place. I called around noon to make a reservation for 7:30pm and I do suggest that you make one because the place was really busy at this time. There was a musician playing near the bar area and I believe they have live music every weekend. We were seated in a comfy booth by the windows which was great since the place is dimly lit and the overall interior of the dining and bar areas are more on the dark side. The sunlight coming from the windows helped "lighten up" the place a little (and for reading the menu too:) Our server, and her trainee, immediately gave the menus and took our drink orders. They have an extensive menu including burgers & sandwiches, ribs, pasta dishes, salads, steaks & chops, seafood, wood roasted chicken and they also have specials which I think are great deals to try. The TWIN FILLET MIGNON (Two 4 oz. meat) was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The rice pilaf and grilled mushrooms that came with the meat were delicious as well. Basic but solid dish. The HONEY GINGER SCALLOPS were 4 fairly big pieces of scallops, each wrapped in bacon with a flavorful honey ginger sauce. The vegetables that came with the seafood were just as tasty as the rice pilaf. Overall, this place gets a YES from me (if I was a reality competition show judge). Service was top-notch, the vibe..although the crowd is more of for "older" people...was nice because people were obviously enjoying their meals and drinks.
