The original Joju location in Elmhurst was on my list forever but as Queens is a trek for me, the new Midtown location has been way more convenient. I have had the classic Sweet Joju (pâté, ham, caramel pork) and the beef bulgogi (thinly sliced marinated ribeye, kimchi) banh mis and while I really enjoyed them, I still think there are some minor improvements to be made. For one, the pickled carrots and daikon lack acid-- they're much too mild and sweet. The lightly toasted baguette, while dependable, lacks the airiness and crispiness that defines an exceptional banh mi. Overall, some solid sandwiches in the area. I would recommend getting spicy mayo and jalapeños added to your sandwich for some smoky, spicy, creaminess. I can't believe I've never actually been to this location, only the one in Elmhurst. This location only has take out right now due to COVID-19. There's a few tables outside on the sidewalk. I came here for lunch on a Friday morning with a friend. My friend and I ordered the sweet Joju sandwich (ham, pate, caramel pork) and the bulgogi sandwich (beef, kimchi). I also ordered a mango lychee mojito. Yes, it's a bit pricier than the Queens location but the portion was about the same. At first I was a bit hesitant because the banh mis were pricey here (considering that banh mis are traditionally inexpensive), but the flavors are fantastic and you have to remember that you're in Midtown, which means Midtown Manhattan pricing. I tried their signature "The Sweet" Joju bahn mi (classic Vietnamese ham, pâté, and caramel pork) and thought it was delicious. The baguette was nicely toasted and the carmelized meat was wonderfully juicy and well marinated. The proportion of the meat to the vegetables (fresh cucumbers, cilantro, and pickled daikon/carrots) were very well balanced, and each bite was tasty and appetizing. I also tried their thai tea with lemon and it was a slightly sweet and refreshing drink to have alongside the banh mi. JoJu was a good quick bite while in Time Square and it has a bathroom(though just one)! Once you go in, you order on the tablet and pay and wait of your order. They have seatings both on the main floor and upstairs. Bathroom being on the main floor. We tried the popular item, lemon grass chicken sandwhich with runny egg. Was a bit disappointed that our egg wasn't runny, but was still good. It had great flavors on a warm toasted bread. Personal opinion, but what made the sandwich outstanding was the pickled carrots and radish! It had super good, clean, refreshing flavor that made the banh mi feel super light and enjoyable. For drinks, we tried both the thai ice tea and lemon thai tea. Being semi-lactose intolerance, we preferred the lemon thai tea, which basically tasted like thai ice tea without milk and had more of a lemon flavor. Came by for the joju fries which comes with spicy mayo, spicy green sauce, pickled daikon and carrots with cilantro. I am hoping it's not too spicy for my tastebuds. Near the right side, there are patrons waiting for their orders either standing or sitting on the benches or the wall. If you continue straight, you will see a line that goes to 1 manned cash register and 3 kiosks to order you food. When my turn arrives, I went to the cashier and requested my order, pay the amount and went to wait for my name to be called. The employees getting the order ready are efficient. I waited about 5-7 minutes then I heard my name called. The fries came in a green square box. The fries were still crispy on the outside and soft on the inside especially since it took me a little while before I got a chance to taste it. The pickled daikon and carrots helped soothe any spiciness. Next time I have to add meat to make the meal more complete to the bahn mi inspiration. This caters more for takeout place than eat-in. However, if you are lucky to score a table/seats bear the back of the restaurant or the second floor mezzanine, definitely eat there. Can't wait to try the other fries and items. read more

A JoJu location in midtown?!? REJOICE!! What a blessing to have this delicious Elmhurst based viet place open a spot right near my work. I, like many others came for the BOGO banh mi deal for opening day. Unfortunately, I came too late and they stopped offering the special and instead had a free drink with a purchase of a bowl, which is definitely not as good of a deal. Regardless, I made the trip so I was determined to get something from here. I ordered the JoJu Bowl which came with carmelized pork and sausage. This the go to bowl for indecisive people like myself because it contains two types of meats. Both are very sweet in flavor but a little different in the taste, which offers some variety in each bite. You absolutely cannot skip out on the runny egg on top, it's the icing on top for sure! When mixed together, there's a medley of flavors from the spicy and sour from the kimchi, to the sweet and salty from the pork. I also ordered a Cold Brew Thai Tea. I'm not sure if this was supposed to be a Thai Iced Tea but if that's the case, it was definitely not as rich and creamy as the drink normally should be. I have a sweet tooth so I would've preferred a little more sugar and cream in there. Overall, the taste is very consistent with the flagship store. However, I'm slightly disappointed in the lack of options in comparison to the store in Elmhurst. Some of my favorites like the pork belly and chicken wings were absent from the menu in midtown and they cut all the drinks out except for three. JoJu finally has a Manhattan location! They specialize in modern vietnamese sandwiches (bowls too). They have definitely changed their presentation to fit the Manhattan vibe but the quality and prices haven't changed. There are bright green boxes instead of small chinese bags to hold the sandwiches and brown bags instead of plastic bags. There has been a long line during lunch but it is worth it and it moves fast. There are also two electronic pads for which you can order from. My favorite sandwich is still the lemongrass chicken (get the runny egg). The chicken is so tender. The caramel pork is also very popular but a little too sweet for me in a sandwich. There are ample toppings - carrots, cucumber, cilantro. They will fill you! The fries are also a must-order. I accidentally came across a sign with "Joju coming soon" one morning while walking a different route to work. Since that day, I have been patiently waiting for JoJu to finally open up in midtown. I have been to their Elmhurst queens location before and loved the food there. For those who never heard of this place, JoJu specializes in "modern vietnamese sandwiches". This is because they bring in other Asian fusion ingredients and flavors along with their traditional sandwiches such as kimchi, bulgogi, spicy mayo and runny eggs. Base prices are $10 for sandwiches and $11 for bowls. I got a lemongrass chicken bowl when stopping by for lunch recently, brown rice topped with a generous amount of chicken and the usual banh mi toppings, and finished off with their spicy green sauce. I added spring roll bites for another $2, which were tasty but actually my least favorite part of the bowl. This was my first time getting one of their bowls, but while it was good, I still like the sandwiches better and will stick with those in the future. Whatever you get, don't forget about the fries! This was a little unclear when I was ordering at the kiosk in the store, and when I asked the employees "Does the pork sauce actually contain pork?" it was surprisingly difficult to get a straight answer.
