Bake N Broil. I want to give you 5 stars. Your food seems to never disappoint, but now I worry about your cleanliness. I dined here about a month ago for breakfast. I ordered pancakes, which seem to never fail my taste buds! After cutting my potion in half and getting to the bottom of the plate, I was very displeased to find that plate I was eating off of was NOT CLEAN. I actually tasted an herb (most likely from an omelet or something) that I knew, did not belong to my pancakes! When I looked at the plate, I could see the remnants from the previous meal on the plate! Gross. As soon as I saw this, I stopped eating, but I did not want to let management know. Since I was with a friend I had not seen in a while and we were enjoying catching up, I did not want to ruin our get together by complaining to management and having to leave. Instead, I called the manger when I got home, told him about it, and he said he would see what happened. That's all. This place was one of my favorite breakfast joints, but after an experience like that, I don't know if I can return. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was just this one incidence, but eating off a dirty dish is just disgusting. I won't return here, unless I know for sure that they make necessary changes to ensure the cleanliness of their kitchen. I also think it is sort of gross that guests walk THROUGH the kitchen to get to the back tables in the restaurant, but that's an entirely different issue. Anyway, eat at your own risk. Hopefully the manager cracked down on what happened and that they are taking better care to ensure the cleanliness of their kitchen. read more

We arrived around 1pm on a Sat. The lunch crowd was still hopping, but we only had to wait about 15 minutes. From what I understand wait times here can be significant. The place does not have their own parking lot but we found a spot on the street. I later learned that you can park in the church lot across the street Mon-Sat. The decor is perfectly charming and the place was bustling. The noise level was on the high side, so if you're looking for a quiet relaxing repast this may not be the place for you. The place was clean and appeared to be well kept. We were seated we were immediately asked what we would like to drink and our waiter (Brian?) soon appeared asking if we had any questions about the menu. I started with Navy Bean w/Ham soup and tried their Special Roast Beef sandwich which is described as sliced cold roast beef, Swiss cheese, tomato, onion and horseradish sauce on a french roll. The soup was excellent. The sandwich while was a picture on the plate lacked much in flavor except for the over-powering of the red onion. The roast beef while nicely tender lacked any real flavor. There was a hint of horseradish sauce, but could have been much more for my liking. I ended up removing the red onion because it was all I was tasting. The french roll was crazy good - very soft and delicious. My friend ordered a grilled tuna and cheddar on sourdough with a side of fries. She said it was good, nothing exceptional. All in all we had a very enjoyable dining experience and I will definitely be coming back. Perhaps for breakfast as that seems popular here. There are also other items on the lunch/dinner menu that I would like to try as well. Bottom line - Compared with other similar type restaurants this place is better than most. I dined here based on the Yelp review and a cousin's recommendation. I had high expectations because of the rave reviews, but was a little disappointed when I tried the food. We order the usual breakfast items including omelets, pancakes, chicken fried steak with a side of their seasoned potatoes. Their breakfast tasted just like any other mom and pop breakfast joint, it was enjoyable, but I wasn't impressed. Honestly the best muffins I've had in Long Beach. Moist, hot n steamy, perfect texture, buttery, delicious and once its inside you, just wow. Waited to eat here for Sunday brunch for over an hour but I'd say the waiting wasn't in vain . The waiter was extremely nice and the portions were HUGE . So overall, I'll give it 4 stars. For breakfasts-- there's always a wait on weekends. During weekdays, usually you're in the clear. However, if it's a small group-- like just 2 of you-- avoid the line and saddle up to the bar. No need to wait. The wife and I have tried many of their cakes/pies/cupcakes... don't believe the hype on the red velvet cupcakes. Nothing special. A bit dry. We really liked the Lemon Lush pie. The wait can be crazy, it's true, but by waiting till about 8PM, the rush of the crowd from the nearby Towers dies down and you can get seated pretty quickly. This is the place to go in Bixby Knolls if you have a jones for an incredibly traditional American meal. I often get the chicken-fried steak meal. Yes, seriously, you can get chicken-fried steak, and it comes with rice pilaf and buttered green beans (there are other choices for sides), a little salad up front, and a scoop of ice cream at the end - all as one item from the menu. And the food is actually pretty good. It's not great fine dining, but as a package, the sum of the parts is greater than any one component. I mean, it's not that I want food like this every day, but for less than $10- you can feel like you really had a complete meal - in that traditional American meal sense. The structure itself is mid-century, but someone did a pretty decent job back-dating the feel of the place a couple of decades and taking it to more of a neo-colonial thing with the correct fenestration and color (black - olive - ivory) palette to mostly pull it off. There is counter as well as booths in a variety of sizes, including two and three-person examples. Parking is all on the street or at the church across 37th street. Try it out, just go later in the evening and when you are thinking of your mid-western suburban childhood. read more

If I were to attempt to postulate a median age of the person that actually eats at Jongewaard's versus the average age of the people posting on Yelp, I think you would find it a bit askew. And just by my rough estimation, I would say that the majority of people eating there saw both the First moon landing on television as well as the Watergate trial in its entirety. Having said that, I go there because I couldn't stand going to Hof's Hut one more time (unless its the dark nautically themed bar in the back of the PCH location-Serious functioning alcoholics only, please!!!). My parents love Hof's and if there was any way to cut those Hut apron strings it was to find another establishment that replicated that type of menu, and so here we are. The food is good, as is the wait staff. I think they tend to be a little frosty when the hostess seats you initially. I would liken the shape of this place to be somewhere in between a extra wide railroad boxcar or the worlds largest cracker box as it is very rectangular and some of the booths are built in to the interior making it hard to tell which table you are supposed to sit at. I have a variety of dishes and desserts there all of which have been pretty good. I did take some cupcakes home that were a tad dry, but I feel all cupcakes at this point are kinda a crap shoot when they are now in the throws of the falling down the trendiness scale. So the lesson to be gained by this is: if you have some older people that you need to feed and the pain of going to Hof's or having to drive out of your way so as to not pass the Hometown Buffet is a necessity, then might I suggest this establishment as a tolerable alternative. read more

I love this place! I used to work a block away and would walk over for a sweet treat of day-old discounted pie when I was having a bad day. They have an excellent lunch special that gets you half a sandwich, soup and salad at a great price. My fave thing on the menu is either the chicken dinner, the chicken pot pie, or their baked spaghetti (special). Went to breakfast this am with my daughter, and she completely finished her food before mine was even served. And when it came, it was cooked wrong. The cutest diner ever! Talk about nostalgia. When you walk in the decor is quaint and intimate. You can tell the customers here are die hard loyalists, including myself . I've been coming here for over 15 years and they never disappoint. There's always a line outside the door, but don't worry. Just place your name on the list, it goes by pretty quick. Grab some complimentary water from outside and take a seat. Other diners are very friendly and will normally start a conversation with you. If you're not interested you can check out the endless baked goods they have on display (cakes, pies, muffins, cinnamon rolls). I can't really advise which is best because they are all made from scratch and I can't be biased. They are all just so damn good . My favorite part is they serve breakfast all day. I hate breakfast, but breakfast here is bomb so it doesn't count! My go to order is the country fried steak, over easy eggs, and toast with coffee. I could sit here all day with husband and have the most relaxed morning. My second favorite dish has to be the lemon blueberry pancakes with raspberry sauce. Light, fluffy, pillowy...yup...just get it. You will thank me later. Lunch and dinner are really good too. My family and I would come here after school for dinner, after trick or treating, before going to the mall. Great memories are made with good company and amazing food. I am like very upset at the quality of the wait staff at this restaurant. I've called them twice to see if their Swedish Meatball they to be available on Tuesday nights. Not more than 30 minutes before I got there, I thought they verified there are meatballsn over my cellphone. When I got there, there were none left. I sat trying to figure out my plane B. I then asked questions about their Asian Chicken Salad, details like "oriental noodles"-- turns out my waiter had no clue what that means. Are there Mung bean noodles? Soba noodles? ramen? Nope just dark brown noodles. (Not what my mom used for Chinese Chicken Salad.) Also asked the same waiter on their Bake & Plate hamburger dish, what "cheese bread" means... He wander around and mumbled about Rye bread with cheddar cheese... I told him that would be a very strange combination to have as "Cheese Bread," He was wrong... it was sourdough, mayo and cheddar cheese. After that, I decided to leave. I don't feel people should lie about or make up silly ideas of what they are serving. Basically i felt lied to by the wait staff there. How can you run out in One and Half hours a whole evenings supply of Swedish Meatballs? unless you never made them for the night? I would not recommend people go here for that reason, very clueless, and frankly deceptive group. The manager, Juan, when i talked to him about this experience, would not offer anything other than a vague promise of "let me help you" I am sorry, but when you write vague descriptions of what your dishes are, and have your people lie or make up stuff --- you don't make me feel i can trust my food won't be 'enhanced' by retaliatory spiteful people. read more

Maybe because it's thanksgiving and their about to close but the order wasn't taken right and instead of offering a discount they just offered to remake the order. The chili is fresh and homemade and delicious. The service wasn't the best but because the food was so delicious I'm willing to give this place a second chance. By the looks of this restaurant, I think this place has been doing business for a long time. I had a chance to try their breakfast one morning and I was glad that I made the right choice. That's the reason why I went there for the second time. I tried country fried steak, breakfast burrito, and some pancakes. They're very big portioned and they were very old fashioned in a good way. It's too bad that my pancakes were slightly burnt but it was still good. It gets pretty croweded in the morning since lots of people know how good this place is. If you crave for good ole country style breakfast, this is the place I recommend. This place doesn't have a parking lot so you have to find a parking in the street. The area is not so busy in the morning so you won't have a hard time finding a space. You can also park your car in the church parking lot across the street except for Sundays. read more

With my disclaimer in tow, I have to say what a disappointment my lunch at B 'N B was the other day. Insert frownie face here. First of all, I had raved about it to my mum for so long that it probably made the disappointing lunch even more disappointing. We decided to do splitsies, sharing two sandwiches. Every so often I get a hankerin' for a good ole' fish sandwich. Sort of like what McD's used to serve, except without all the fake everything. For some reason my mom thought a tuna melt sounded good. So we ordered 2 fish sandwiches, I guess it was our low brow version of "fish done two ways". The fish sandwich was two deep fried fish blobs similar to Van de Camps. They were placed unlovingly on a white bun and slopped and topped with a blob of tartar. No flavor, overly greasy, bun didn't offer much and just two stars. The tuna melt had potential had it been crisped up and cooked long enough. There's a hint to be taken here, tuna MELT means something more than just a tuna sandwich. It was cold tuna with a slight light brown edge, then slapped on bread and sincerely nothing to write home about. The french fries tasted like last week's wonders. They were hard, cold and lifeless. If you'd like french fries that'll make you swoon, pop down the street to Mustard's. Oh my god, those fries are delish! Our waiter was nice but wow, did he have too much caffeine today? There was a point that I had to wonder if my mom invited him to lunch with us. Thanks to one of my friends, we decided to check this place out for dinner one night. Apparently we were lucky to have the 20 yr old waiter who catered to our every need because I heard that the service here wasn't the best. So we went in with an open mind and thought we'd end up at the counter. We decided to wait for a table, and it was only 15 minutes; so far, so good. I decided on the pot roast sandwich with the navy bean soup - yummm! My boyfriend had their wheat pancakes and they were surprisingly tasty! For dessert, I went for something simple; a slice of their custard pie. Flaky crust, firm yet smooth custard and topped with nutmeg - very nice! Returned a couple of weeks later to bring a whole pie home. They were out of banana pudding, so I chose their famous lemon lush, and WOW! The crust was very consistent, and there is a layer of crushed pecans between the crust and the lemon curd. Topped off with fresh, whipped cream, and what a great combination! I was introduced to this place by my coworker when I moved in the area. I have never dined here because the line seems always to be long. I also order to go for my breakfast. I like the country fried chicken with seasoned hash brown. I always choose the muffins as side. Their blueberry muffin is to die for. The flavor or the food is pretty light, seems like everything doesn't have a lot of salt. I have to add some salt and pepper to the hash ( I usually do not eat very salty so I can imagine they probably really didn't use salt ) I have came here just for muffins before, but one time they were sold out close to lunch time. It's hard to enjoy a meal when you feel like you're irritating your server when you need something. They don't smile...none of them...just take a look around. Let's tack on another great review! I love the home sweet home cooking here. I've never had an entree that I didn't like. What I love most is how you can get "a little bit of soup and a little bit of salad" with your entree as opposed to one or the other at most restaurants. I definitely want to put a vote in for the French Onion soup. This is a really popular spot, so if you don't feel like waiting you'll want to go on a slower day (during the week). Of the many times that I've been there, there was only one instance where my food was slow coming out. I didn't really think it was that slow really, (my date must've been incredibly engaging) but she came around twice or so reassuring that my food was on its way once she felt that something was up. At the end of the meal, she offered the dessert menu and I waffled about it for a bit. It's hard to pass up dessert at Bake and Broil with all the cakes, pies, cookies displayed but I really wanted to exercise some self control, being an adult and everything (hah!) Ultimately, I declined and she said "are you sure? I mean... I feel really bad about the food." I ordered a small slice of pie and she put it on the house. (Strawberry pie, I remember. It was delicious.) That, I think, is SUPERB service. PS. I checked "Good for Dessert" but it really should be checked, circled, underlined, highlighted, bolded and made into a Las Vegas style neon. Loved it! Will come back! Mom had the open-face turkey sandwich special with mashed potatoes. I had the Denver omelette with seasoned hash browns and an English muffin with some of their homemade jam. I also took home a slice of the chocolate brownie pie. It was all soooo delicious!! It was one of those silent meals where you kind of forget to talk because you're stuffing your face with heavenly yumminess. Giving it four stars because of the long wait for a seat. We waited probably about 15 minutes before seats opened up at the counter, and our names weren't called for a booth until our food had already arrived. The unfortunate part about the counter was the fact that we sat next to the most obnoxious customer in the history of ever. Did not even read the menu when ordering apparently because he called the owner over when the food arrived and complained that what he received was exactly what the menu said he would get and then proceeded to send back his food and order a completely different meal but refused to be charged for it. As my mother said, "gauche does not even describe that man... maybe cochon" Anyway, our waiter was amazing! He drew a little heart in the latte I ordered. It was quite tasty as well. I would definitely want to try this place not on peak hours, but coming from LA probably not going to happen. I also think we're going to order a pie from here for Easter and drive all the way down to get it because they all looked sooooo freaking awesome. A true gem in the LB Bixby Knolls area. This place is even busy on weekdays. I absolutely love their red velvet cake and cream cheese muffin. Country Breakfast - sausage gravy with biscuits, hash and sausage links. Not the best I've had but still good. Steak and Eggs - you can never really go wrong with this. I also like how there's an option for plain hash or hash with onions and bell peppers Omelette with cheese and avocado - don't quite remember the name but my mother enjoyed it, even found it quite rich with the avocado and cheese Chocolate cake - Found the cake slightly drier than the red velvet. It's an alright option if red velvet is sold out. There's many standard diner items here but the quality is definitely better and fresher than other diners in LB. Today was one of those food adventure days, so my friends and I came here to try the famous chicken pot pie and a bunch of different desserts. Chicken Pot Pie - I must say that this is a pretty good chicken pot pie, second to only my friend Monica's pot pie. Not many places can pull this off. I truly believe that they use fresh ingredients to make that amazing filling in that flaky crust. I ate that bowl clean. I would have licked it if there weren't so many people around. Bread Pudding - It was decent, but I've had so many delicious bread puddings from various places, including my friend's homemade kitchen ones, that this one just can't compare. It was a good portion for a one person dessert, something that's not too sweet. Apple Pie - Get it warmed. They used the perfect apples for this pie. Care to take a guess? The only reason that I know is that my friend uses the same apples when she bakes for me, and they are so good! They complement the crust so well. Banana Cream Pie - I would say that this was a better than average banana cream pie. The bananas were fresh and the cream was perfect. In general the cream here is so good, sweet and fluffy. Red Velvet Cake - I'm not a fan of red velvet anything in general, but this cake seemed moist. I had a small bite and it wasn't overly sweet. Pumpkin Pie - This is just your average pumpkin pie. I don't think I've ever had bad pumpkin pie but I've also never had super memorable pumpkin pie either. read more

This restaurant is mine and my boyfriend's go to breakfast place. It always seems to be busy, even on weekdays, but we always luck out with seating at the bar. Everything has always been delicious, and the service is always timely, super friendly, and overall amazing. Put our name down, tasted the complimentary coffee cake which was EXCELLENT. Sat down and were told 35 minute wait, the lady came out and called 4 different names who were not there. 2 more names of people that had left and our wait was only 20 minutes, WOO HOO. This place makes their own jams and all sauces. I didnt know what to get after all the positive reviews and trying to stick with no meat or cheese. I ended up getting vegetable omelet which did have cheese on it. It came with a muffin and the reviews had mentioned the blueberry muffins were really great so I tried one. I myself did not find them sinful as one reviewer mentioned. Yes, it was freshly made, but I must be used to the over sugared really large muffins you get most places and I admit I love that extra sugar. Still, I did finish my half, also got to try the raspberry streusel muffin- me and mom split them. This one was more my style, pretty sweet BUT the raspberry jam had seeds, I didnt dig that. so after 3 cups of really great coffee and 1 whole muffin, I was ready to eat. However my giant omelet came out bursting with plenty of avocado wedges, diced tomatoes and fresh mushrooms. I think I forced myself to eat 1/3 of it. With most breakfasts there they offer you hashbrowns, or seasoned hashbrowns. The seasoned really means red and green bell peppers and onion. Kind of like hashbrown/home fries. They ruled too! The hashbrowns were grated a little wider than I'm used to and I personally loved it. My dad ordered a short stack of pancakes which were seriously GI-NOR-MOUS. And they tasted wonderful. My nieces avocado, bacon and cheddar omelet had so much bacon inside she actually scooped some out. Of course, I had to sample that. YUM. I have to say on a special note the salsa here ROCKS. I usually hate restaurant salsa in non-Mexican restaurants but there was plenty of jalapeno in this one. Everytime I have been here it's been way too crowded with a long wait. The joint is tiny and they really pack 'em in. But if you order right, you'll know why people don't mind being packed in like sardines.. Chicken fried steak (both breakfast and dinner) versions are great. The breeding isn't too skimpy that it just falls off leaving a bare piece of meat on your fork, but not too thick that your eating more bead that steak. Came here for the first time for breakfast with a good friend of mine. This place is full of hospitality, clean, friendly and let's not forget the A1 food! I had a breakfast plate which included scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns (these are a must), sourdough toast & 1 blueberry pancake! Fulfilling, great portions and one satisfied customer. I definitely will be back. I will recommend for breakfast to be prepared to wait, luckily we were in and seated pretty fast. This place is popular, with regulars that come in. BAKE n BROIL!!! Best Pies in LB, hands down. Some of the best breakfast also and they serve it all day. It can get crowded for sure, but if you go by yourself you can usually catch a seat at the counter pretty easily. Their dinner isn't my favorite kind of food, but it is still super solid home style food. The staff is great and this place is a total local institution that you need to check out if you haven't. Your gramma has been coming here for years, she just never told you. She probably wanted you to think those pies were homemade...but they actually came from Jongewaards! read more

Nope. Time was (or so I've heard) this was The Place for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Apparently it's still worth a stop for breakfast, but give it a pass for anything else. I've ordered off the menu a few times, and gotten underwhelming salads, entrees and sandwiches. One memorably horrible visit, I bit into a roast beef sandwich and a huuuuuuuuuuge chunk of gristle came out in the bite-- it composed most of the (very dry) meat in the sandwich. When the waitperson came by to ask how it was, I pointed out the gristle sitting on the plate, and it received only a blank look. What. I was told that the daily specials were better, as they were prepared day-of. My last visit, my party arrived at 8:30 on a Friday night, which turned out to be half an hour before closing time. On a Friday! But no matter. We waited 25 minutes for a seat, and served. I ordered the "baked mac and cheese" off the specials menu. Our food arrived well after closing time (probably around 9:30), and my macaroni was packed with chunks of ham, which were not mentioned on the specials board or by the waitress. I don't eat pork products. But the kitchen had visibly and noisily began to shut down and we'd already been there an hour. I didn't send it back, but ate around the ham. My mom's meal came with pie. The waitress updated the dessert card and brought it to us. Mom wasn't expecting a big variety, as these would pretty much be leftovers, after closing. But chocolate pie was on the list and we ordered it. The waitress argued with us briefly, saying "you mean chocolate cake." Until we showed her the list she'd given us. She looked confused and then said she'd crossed off the wrong one. ... What's the point of having an updated dessert list if you can't update it correctly. NOPE. read more

Their baked goods are divine. It's a perfect place for breakfast and lunch, and their red velvet cake is the best I've ever had. Perhaps Frosted Cupcakes on 2nd Street ties with them on a smaller version, but they don't make full sized cakes. I tried one of Jongewaard's quiches for breakfast the other day, and it puts Mimi's to shame. Their stuff is just so much fresher. read more

I tried their cinnamon roll today. Nice and hot, super big, and with butter! It was so sweet I couldn't finish it. I also tried their pumpkin pancakes a while back when they were in season. Also pretty good if not a tad dry. Some down sides: The place is usually packed on weekends and I usually wait at least 30 minutes to get a table for 2. I took my grandparents here once and it was a hassle to get them to a table because one of them was in a wheelchair. Seems ironic to me that there's hardly any room for a wheelchair to pass through, although there's so many old folks who eat here. The place also smells musty, probably because it was crowded. I sat at a table when one of the waiters decided to wipe it down with a wet rag. That just smelled nasty! Overall, the food is good. Just need to get past the crowd and the smell. read more

I've been going here for years! My best friend from high school used to live a couple of blocks away but I never started going here regularly until I started college. They are known for their chicken pot pies! I get that almost every time. I've also had their french dip and my brother has tried almost everything on their breakfast menu. I also recommend their lemon blueberry pancakes. It is served with a really good raspberry syrup that's not too sweet. In terms of soup, I'm a fan of their french onion soup (super cheesy!) and their vegetable beef. When I go with my friends, they rave about the chili cheese scrambled eggs. It's a lot of food, but it's been a staple whenever we would take a breakfast trip here to catch up. The restaurant is family owned and always very clean and neat. You can either sign up to be seated for a table or just seat yourself at the bar for a quick meal. The service is always great and you can tell by the atmosphere that there are a lot of locals that go here for breakfast or dinner. Everything on their menu is pretty consistent for a restaurant that serves American food but I'd say their food is always above average. If you're in the mood for American food, you have to try Bake n Broil! read more
