Jongro, I wish I discovered you sooner! On my recent trip to NYC, we went to Jongro on a weekday. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations for less than 8 people. We arrived and waited about 15-20 minutes for our table of five. While waiting, you can order a drink at the cashier station. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I had questions about the menu (how much to order) since this was our first time there, and he was very helpful in answering our questions. My receipt says the servers name was David O, so shout out to him for taking care of us. Between the five of us, we ordered: Large Beef Platter ($114.99) Beef Tartare ($23.99) Pork Belly ($24.99) Medium Kimchi Stew ($18.99) Seafood Pancake ($9.99) With the food listed above, we also ordered beer ($6.99) and soju ($11.99-$14.99 depending on what you order). The food was sooo yummy. The meat was good all around and the beef tartare is worth trying too. I definitely satisfied my Korean BBQ craving for sure. The price came out to $355 total, which is $71 per person after tax and tip (all food, five beers, and three sojus). Spectacular Korean BBQ. Make sure you show up hungry! Our personal favorites and recommendations are kimchi stew, pork belly and marinated kalbi. You know you're in a good place because it feels like a feeding frenzy! Staff moving super fast, tables turning over and K-Pop pumping in the background. Jongro is another solid KBBQ spot in Ktown. It's a bit cheaper than some of the competitors on the block while still retaining high food quality, and Jongro has a unique Korean influenced decor, which adds to the experience. The service is also excellent and efficient. The highlight meats here were beef brisket and ribeye. The galbi was slightly tough and disappointing. The side dishes were also a pretty huge letdown, but I can forgive them since they provided us with plenty of lettuce and bean paste. The egg soup, kimchi soup, and tofu soup were all good, and japchae also tasted delicious with plenty of vegetables in it. It does get popular here, so make sure you plan on waiting. read more

Amazing Korean BBQ. Very clean and efficiently run. I would go back every time I'm in New York and craving meat. Their vent system is well designed. I don't leave smelling like smoke like I usually would eating at Korean BBQ places. The ambience is like retro Korean streets. I enjoy seeing the attention to details. Price is definitely on the expensive side. Expect to pay about 30$ a person but leave well fed and satisfied. Food I recommend the pork belly. It was my favorite. The flavored soju was really good too. Dangerous that it didn't taste like alcohol. I've been here multiple times and each visit is fairly consistent. No reservations but you can put down your name and they will text you when your table is ready. If you're connected on Yelp, there's a countdown that will show the estimated wait and the number of parties ahead of you too. THE MEAT - the selection is good and you can pick whatever platter size or cuts you please. Quality is great and on par with the rest of best KBBQ in Ktown. Portions may be a little smaller than other places but a large beef platter, seafood pancake, and drinks was just right for a group of 3. SERVICE - staff is super attentive to the meat, and check often if we wanted more banchan, lettuce wraps, or drink refills. We saw a staff change during the middle of dinner and nothing was forgotten or diminished in service. ATMOSPHERE - it's definitely loud in there. First time trying this chain. We were worried about the wait on a Saturday night even though we were there on the early side of the evening. They said 30 minutes. We waited less than that. The music is loud as some of the reviews have indicated but my kids love K-pop so no complaints there. They had fun trying to identify which songs they we're familiar with. Now to the food... Everything was delicious. There was 6 of us and we ordered the large beef plate, a pork plate, and an extra beef plate. I love the banchan especially the kimchi. They also had an egg appetizer that was delicious. The server expertly cooked the meat. He was patient with our questions and was quite helpful. It was the first time some of us ever had Korean BBQ and we were impressed by this place. Order the platter, better value for your money. GET HERE EARLY! Ride the slow elevator to the 2nd floor with the rest of the people in this office building! Why does this place look like an episode of M*A*S*H? I love that the hostesses use tablets (Samsung?) to enter your cel number & name on the list and then texting you updates and when your table is ready. It's still a madhouse in the waiting area during prime time and I was told they do not take reservations on Friday & Saturday nights. If you're smart, send an advance scout to put your name on the list while the rest of your party assembles or are stuck in the lobby waiting for the elevator. Kind of like what my friends did with me (you have the most patience, they said). We only waited about 30 minutes for a table of 5, though. The service is fantastic with the waiters constantly tending the grills. Normally, I would be the grillmeister, but for tonight, I defer to the professionals. Even if the waiters are not flipping or cutting meat on your grill, there's a convenient call button at the end of the table, though you will probably never need it. If you're carnivorous like us, order up a lot of meat. We got the marinated beef combo, pork belly and marinated pork ribs (my favorite). Even though the waiter said he didn't recommend it, we also ordered the marinated chicken, which turned out to be pretty good. This ended up to be just enough food for us since the banchan game was a little lacking, but you can ask for refills if you really like the kimchi. The seafood pancake was underwhelming with not a lot of seafood, but I wished we had more of the cook-on-the-table steamed egg casserole and soondubu tofu soup. My other downside is that every table is cooking with an open flame, there are gas lines running along all the walls, all the decor is made from real wood, you're on a high 2nd floor, the fire exit is nowhere to be seen and it's wall-to-wall people. I was told this was the best in terms of Kbbq in the city, I really wasn't that impressed, Flushing, Fort Lee and Palisades Park for the win! The venue is huge and it is super packed on the Friday my group went, it was about an hr and a half wait at 7:30pm. I thought the service was great, they were very attentive and did a good job swapping out the grills and preparing our food. Also, the entrance is kinda weird, it's located in the basement of a office lobby. Also, the name is prounced "joung no" not "jon grow" The food: Beef Platter- Kalbi/Ribeye/Beef thin skirt/Beef brisket. There are two options on the menu for marinated and unmarinated, we went with the unmarinated and it was a little underwhelming. The meats even with the addition of the table side condiments and wraps helped with flavor but did little to add that punch of flavor I was expecting. I also felt the beef was more chewy than I expected it to be, I was expecting the meat to fall apart but it had some give. The overall experience felt like I was at a backyard bbq at a friend's house eating underseasoned bbq. I would want to go back and try the marinated version. Pork Platter- Belly/Neck/Jowl. I never really liked Korean BBQ because of the sweetness of the marinated meat and the smokiness. Thankfully we ordered unmarinated meat and the place wasn't too smoky due to the right in your face fan which sucks away most of the smoke. I still smelled like Korean BBQ afterwards, but it wasn't as bad as usual. The place is a bit hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for. Just look for the Citibank, and Jongro is located above. Enter the building to the left of the Citibank and take the elevator to the 2nd floor. For our party of 8, we ordered a Kimchi Pancake ($9.99), Seafood Pancake ($9.99), Large Beef Platter ($99.99), and Large Pork Platter ($88.99). Kimchi and Seafood Pancake were great, but seafood one needs more seafood. Unmarinated meats were tasty with the soybean paste and soysauce with ginger powder. Favorite was the pork skin, which we all thought was just a piece of lining for the rest of the meat. Best part was the bowl of steamed egg which cooks in front of you as the meat cooks. The large platters is supposed to come with your choice of steamed egg or tofu stew. We ordered the two large platters, but they only tried to give us one of the bowls until we argued for them to give us two, which they eventually complied. Don't expect great banchan, only kimchi and macaroni salad. The two large platters and two pancakes wasn't enough food for our group or at least for some of the guys, so we went over to Woorijip for a second dinner. They say they don't seat you until your whole party is here, but they seated us missing 1 or 2 people. Come early to put your name down or expect a wait. Luckily, a person in our group came two put our name two hours before we agreed to meet. New Korean Restaurant in K-town? Isn't KBBQ restaurants saturated in K-town? Apparently not! Upon entry you'll be surprised to see the restaurant layout. Jongro sets a new standard in terms of interior design with open traditional wooden frames build with fluted columns, rustic tables and chairs, and a sign that quotes "Raw Meat is Delicious!" in Korean. The 14 of us came here for a dinner and noticed an entourage of guests mostly the younger generation waiting for a table. Glad our party made reservations in advance which was available right on time. Kudos! I highly suggest you make reservations especially for Friday nights and weekends. We ordered unmarinated meat and pork combos for the 4 of us in our section. The meat was absolutely satisfying, but I have to say it was no different from Seoul Garden and Wonjo. Perhaps the meat comes from the same distributor? Or supplied from Seoul Garden? Who knows. Who cares. It was delicious! I was quite surprised to see a slab of rib-eye steak to be included in the meat combo. Bonus! Along with the meat came soy bean soup (Dwen Jang Jigae), raw onions in soy sauce, fresh romaine lettuce, shredded green onions, semi-spicy kimchi, diced jalapenos, meat sauce (ssam jjang), and NO RICE. What? Yes you have to order it for an additional charge. Isn't it customary at a Korean restaurant for rice to be provided? I was expecting steamed egg as a service given our party size, but no dice. Guess my expectations were higher than expected. Overall the night was memorable. To note subtly playing in the background was 90's Kpop! It was quite a nostalgic experience listening to childhood favorites- G.O.D, Sechskies, and other Korean classics while enjoying the company of others. Aside from the lousy rice charge (which itself if not all that expensive, but the idea of paying for rice at a Korean restaurant is displeasing), I left the restaurant satisfied and felt like a BBQ exhaust pipe, BBQ vapors seeping out of my jacket, pants, and hair. My coworker kept mentioning to me how good this place was even within ktown area, so I know I will have to pay a visit at least once. Since they do not take reservation on Friday/Saturday, we walked in as a group. They had a big space inside and everything was fast. We opted for the beef tongue, the platter as well as the short ribs - made themselves perfect combo with lettuce and the spicy sauce. I also enjoyed their steamed egg a lot however portion seemed to be too small for six people to share. This place is so good I came here twice in one week. Some things to know: - The restaurant is above the Citibank. Entrance is on the left of the Citibank, you need to take the elevator to the second floor. - There will be a wait. I came on a Tuesday and a Friday around 7pm with a party of 4 and in both instances I waited about 1 hour. - For non-Korean speakers, the servers here speak fluent English and are both polite and helpful. I've been to other restaurants in the area which I will not name here, where servers weren't so nice to non Koreans. - There is a button on the table which alerts the server to come but didn't need to use it. - If you are not sure what to order, I would suggest ordering the combo platters. My favorite was the marinated beef platter ($50) but the pork platter ($38) was good as well. For a party of 4 people, 2 platters was the perfect amount. - The servers cut and cook all the meat for you and will let you know when it is ready to eat. - Meal comes with banchan (side dishes) as well as kimchi stew and steamed egg cooked table-side. - Rice costs extra per bowl. - They have a coat check which is free, but tip expected. - As with most Korean BBQ joints, your clothes will stink of meat. Make no mistake, the meat is delicious. But I don't know how I feel about paying $40+ per person for KBBQ. We had a party of 9, and we ordered three platters, 2 beef Combo platters and 1 Pork combo platter. I thought we ate pretty normally, and at the end we were still a little hungry. Then the bill came for a whopping total of $370.43. Holyyyyyyy...I double checked to see if something was off, but it wasn't. so $370/9 people comes out to about $41 per. Came here with some friends after drinking and really liked it! I had not eaten before drinking so I was pretty hungry and getting kbbq was perfect. We ordered a platter of beef, a kimchi jigae, and added a kimchi pancake afterwards. Of course, we had a bottle of soju to share as well! It's nice that they cook for you and the facilities looked clean and nice. Not too busy around the time I went (11:30/12ish I believe) and the waiters are very attentive. The beef was nice and flavorful and good to share with four people. Honestly, it was probably enough for us at the time with the kimchi jigae but I was craving the pancake. This was some pretty quality Korean BBQ. My advice, based on what I saw, would be to try to get here early because the word has gotten out. The hostess specifically asks beforehand if you are BBQ'ing or regular and my guess is the menu is different depending on it. I can only speak for the BBQ. Much like more specialized places, condiments are more limited and focused (kimchi, dipping sauces, lettuce, onions, picked onions) that go more specifically with meats. We got the set marinated beef combo, which includes egg appetizer and a choice of soup. We added the pork belly because it just looked oh so tempting. The quality of the meats were better than most places; the pork was amazing (perfect meat to fat content in my opinion). The marinated beef had a short rib portion and a steak-like portion: the short rib portion was delicious and but the steak portion was just average. We finished off the meal with a solid, water based nengmeun (noodles). My biggest takeaways: - the portions are not that large; all of the above we ate through two people. - the "marinated" beef had the lightest marinated I've ever had at a Korean BBQ. In fact, I actually thought for a second they misheard us and gave us the plain version, but you could see the sauce. Now, I actually like non-marinated meats so no big deal, but big FYI. I came here for some BBQ and hot tofu soup. As soon as you come in, they will ask for your number if there is a wait. They text you immediately when a table is available. The tables are pretty standard. Each table has a grill and a drop down vent. I have attached a picture down below to show you the decor. The marinated kalbi was tender and the soup was tasty. Kimchi is spicy here so if you cannot take the heat, stay away from the kimchi. Service was great! I really appreciated how our server grilled the meat in small portions as oppose to grilling it all at once. This prevents over cooked meat. If you really want to eat here, do plan on going early, really saves you the wait time. SERVICE: The service was great. Our waitress always made sure we had everything we need. For how busy the restaurant got, they staffed enough workers that if you needed anything then all you had to do was ask. FOOD: Really enjoyed the food experience. Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas or NYC or whatever anymore. Point is it is a rather nice escape from the city streets when you walk in. Two lunch trips and two extremely successful meals so far for me. The banchan (starter salads) includes spicy onions, spicy kimchi, macaroni (loaded with mayo), and bean sprouts. We also received another bonus dish (not sure what it was but it was damn good). The lunch specials are certainly your best bet. $13 for a spicy pork or spicy seafood bibimbap? Bulgogi bowls are on there too. So bring on the eat. Very filing, very awesome, very tasty, and very satisfied to the fullest. Service was wonderful too. We had to walk up and down the street to find this place. The entrance is located in an office-building lobby. Many passersby would not notice this place unless they were either in the know or curiously looked up to the second floor. Inside the lobby is a small sign near the back wall advertising Jongro on the second floor. When you get off the elevator, it feels like you are taken outside to a small Korean village with kiosks and huts. Along the walls are posters of old Korean movies. I found the ambiance very enlightening and relaxing, and as if I were in a KDrama. You will find your usual Korean meats to BBQ at the table with overhead smoke exhausts. But since a few of my colleagues and I were on lunch hour and we didn't want to smell like BBQ, we opted for items from the lunch menu. I ordered the Kalbi + Cold Noodle ($13.99), the latter half better known as Naengmyeon. For ban chan, we were treated to an assortment of primarily vegetable dishes ranging from Mung Bean Sprout Muchim, Baechu (Napa Cabbage) Kimchi, Kongjaban (Korean Black Beans), pickled onions & jalapenos, pickled cabbage & carrots, and macaroni salad with imitation crab meat. All were good and spot on in flavors and texture, my favorites being the kimchi and bean sprouts. The kimchi was crunchy with just the right amount of saltiness and spiciness. Yum! Next came our lunch entrees, the boneless kalbi served on a hot skillet on top of a bed of semi-sauteed onions. The kalbi was tender and flavorful, subtly sweet from the sauteed onions and salty from the soy-based marinade. The Naengmyeon was served in a large stainless steel bowl, filled with buckwheat noodles, a half-sliced hardboiled egg, slices of cucumber, and 2 slices of beef. If the server doesn't ask, make sure to ask for the noodles to be cut up, unless you like to suck up all the long strands of noodles. No crushed ice was present, but the dish was super cold as expected. The noodles were slippery and wet, slurping up all that deliciousness in the light and sweet broth. It is definitely a refreshing and very satisfying dish on a hot summer afternoon. Add the protein from the kalbi and assortment of veggies from banchan, and mom will be proud. I also had the pleasure of trying my coworker's Chicken Cutlet ($11.99) over a bed of rice and egg. I was surprised how crispy and tender the chicken cutlet was, almost reminding me of the Japanese variation known as Chicken Katsu Don. A simple dish yet very tasty for those who don't want beef or seafood. Jongro BBQ is definitely an affordable spot for Korean sit-down lunch and expect me to return back. WINNER. We came here on a Saturday night at 8 and surprisingly NO WAIT for the four of us. We ordered the set menu for $49.99. Our waiter said that it would be enough to feed two people so we ordered two more meats to add on. We normally eat A LOT but we were quite full and bellies happy after we ate the meats from the $49.99 portion. Maybe because we had all the side dishes and ate a lot of them. We trucked through the pork belly and then the last meat we ordered we could do no more. We were struggling to eat but it was sooo good. We were defeated and had to take the last meat to go. This is definitely 4+ star place. Looks like they have been doing the soft opening, and because of that the price is almost unimaginable at 32nd st. Actually I didn't know until now, but this place came directly from Korea where there are 80 branches. Unlike other korean barbeque places they sell ribeye steaks. They also have other stuff like marinated shortrib, pork belly, briskets. They have very funny looking ventilation system, so the smell won't follow you much when you get out of the place. In fact this restaurant's concept is "old timer" thing. They have movie posters from the time I was young and they in fact also sell the candy stuff I had like 25 years ago in Korea. Good, especially relative to other choices in the area. Service is accommodating and efficient, allowing us to specify an order to the meat courses (dietary restrictions). Meat was cooked with only the necessary attention, and meat temperature was pointed out to allow people to eat at different levels of doneness as desired. Extra water, lettuce, kimchi all provided quickly when requested. Space is cool, and tables and booths are spread out so it's much more comfortable than other restaurants. I arrived early to request a table about half an hour later, though the restaurant was empty. As it filled out and people start waiting for restaurants, I checked in to make sure that if there was a list, that I would be added. The host and hostesses assured me that they knew I was the first one there, and they checked in with me as my party arrived. This was a really nice touch, to feel wanted even though the restaurant was filling up at this point. Food is good. Meat is tender and tasty at decent prices. The pancake actually stood out. It's crispy and delicious and still cheaper than at other restaurants who quite honestly tend to price gouge on this staple. All in, a great experience. In looking forward to going back. read more

Ambiance: I really like the decor and layout in this place! It's roomy and you are seated in booth like areas so it feels more private unlike the other ktown restaurants. Con is that you have to wait for the elevator just to get to the second floor. Service: top notch, these guys and gals are quick, courteous and always checking in on how your doing [update 12/4/15: their service still proves to be top notch... A server accidentally spilled a shot of soju which wasn't a big deal, but they immediately gave us a free bottle of beer, which we were Totally not expecting as again it wasn't a big deal the spill. Also our server noticed that everyone at our table was too polite to take the last piece of food so he would immediately cut it into 3's so no one was taking the last one- honestly over the top service here!!!] Food: delicious! There's something about having your food cooked in front of you that makes it taste extra good! I ordered the meat stew which cooked in front of us giving us time to chat and enjoy the sides. The meat stew had a generous amount of meats ranging from bacon to spam. Man is this thing filling. On top of that we ordered the spicy marinated pork. Because we only ordered one BBQ platter they had to cook it in the kitchen which was nbd since our meat stew was cooking in front of us.
