We just went to Jose's Country Kitchen. We have to say it was pretty darn good. The hub ordered the hamburger and fries...it was a huge tasty burger. I ordered the taco salad with chicken. It was delish!! And so much chicken..so worth the price. I recommend this place. read more

We have eaten here many times over the years. They serve good food and large portions . But lately the last three times we have eaten here the service was terrible. There used to be several ladies who were waiting on you service was friendly and very prompt but recently when we have gone it's just one guy serving and he is polite but not fast at all! We were there yesterday, stopped at 1 pm on a Saturday we were the only couple sitting outside there was a large party of 13 inside we orders at 1:04 by 1:44 another party of 7 css as me on the patio we still did not have my husbands salad or our food by that time. I could see through the window the waiter just standing at the counter waiting fir orders. He refreshed the inside parties beers but never once came out to ask if we wanted anything nor did he bring the salad I asked twice for the salad finally got it but the dressing that was to be Italian was just the oil on top could not use it at all . He moves very slow no urgency at all. We finally received our food an hour after ordering . The party of 7 behind us got their food 15 min later . I recommend their food just having only one very slow waiter on a Saturday at a busy truck stop is not good business. As the party of 7 food came out there was a young lady helping him finally . Went camping across the road and heard this place had great all American old school trucker cafe food. And it was!! The place was filled with farmers, truckers and out-of-towners and packed. The waitress was the only one working the whole place and she ROCKED IT LIKE THE BEST MULTITASKER!!!! Taking orders, refilling coffee, bussing tables, processing checks...never missing a beat. This is a truck stop diner with great service and decent food, complete with a waitress that calls you "Honey". There was the usual breakfast offerings plus some Mexican influenced dishes. Mr. S played it safe with french toast, eggs and bacon. We love good bacon and this was darn good and cooked just right. I ordered a Chili Verdi omelette that was way more than even I could eat. The chili verdi was chunky and well seasoned but the eggs were cooked hard. I ignored most of the hash browns and opted to focus on the omelette and side biscuit. I was disappointed in the biscuit, being too doughy for my taste but Mr. S. ate part of it for me. The gravy that was reviewed so highly was just mediocre and not worth the calories. Service was personable and outstanding. She kept our coffee cups full and knew when to bring me a box to haul home my monster egg leftovers. Did I mention there is tons of RV parking? A good old fashioned, clean truck stop is always a safe haven when hungry. read more

Stopped by for breakfast while heading up to San Francisco and I'm so glad we did! Server Maria was super friendly and fast. They were prepping bbq for lunch and it smelled amazingggg. This place was a bit hard to find as it is located behind the truck stop. However, we were rewarded by the small extra effort. It is a fairly small place and based on the appearance one might be unimpressed. We stopped in the day before Christmas and there were surprisingly few people given it was a major travel day, Maybe they were closing early and everyone else knew. Anyways, we ordered Jose's Omelet. Not a new mix of ingredients but the taste was very, very good and it was a good sized portion. Price was $11.95 so not unreasonable and well worth the cost. The sole waitress was helpful and friendly. No hesitation to recommend this restaurant to other travelers. read more

Took an exit off Wellsona (you wont know the street name anyway I just followed the sign for food and gas) and found that the gas station / convenience store was closed. Behind the abandoned gas station is Jose's, a diner. All you can eat fish and chips for 11 and change but did not opt for it. We got a late afternoon breakfast of eggs and sausage. Service was very friendly, but if you look different (Asian) be prepared that fellow diners will give you a long scrutinizing stare which is by no means unfriendly but enough to make you feel eerie. A word of advice, don't eat the pc of flat sausage that comes with the breakfast. read more

What a diner! I'm a diner man. I love eating there food. I love working in them. I love taking pictures of them. I love thinking about them And this diner has the best fries of any diner I've been to. That is saying something. I ordered the fantastic Ranch Burger which had cheese, plenty of veggies, bacon and a tasty spicy BBQ sauce. Throughout the entire plate I could taste the care the cook had put into it. The biggest takeaway for me is an unusual one. I saw three staff while I was there: the waitress (who is the incarnate of the "diner waitress"), the dishwasher and the cook. Each of them were warm, friendly, sincere and smiled at me. Whoever is in charge of hiring at this joint is on the ball, because these people are gold. Cute little restaurant, as you walk through the front entry there is an arched grape vineyard. Surrounding the area are cacti in this desert landscape. Oh yeah, can't forget your fountain in the front for the Pokéstop to collect whatever it is you collect. Jose's Country Kitchen has big servings. I don't have much of an appetite but my son is pleased with his food. I did sample the fries, too much on the greasy side. Everyone seems really nice here & they serve coffee in glass coffee pots. This place was super clean, friendly and the food was outstanding and you definitely could not beat the price. Loved Loved Loved the cashier/waitress that was there the morning we stopped in on our drive to Santa Cruz . She told me the specials and didn't laugh when I asked if the chilaquiles were authentic. On our way to San Simeon, my family and I stopped here for a quick breakfast. We sat down and our waitress, Phyllis, walked over and asked us what we would like to drink. As soon as we said "coffee" , I had noticed that she ALREADY had a coffee pot in her hands, and she quickly poured us our drinks. My four year old sister thoroughly enjoyed herself with a fairly big bucket of crayons and a coloring sheet while waiting for her breakfast. The food was delicious and came out fairly quickly. (My father had the Oh Papa! Omelet with chorizo and pepper jack cheese , which he recommends!) Luckily, we got there around 9 am so we missed the rush hour at 10 when a lot more people piled into the restaurant. Fabulous park tacos with grilled pineapple, cilantro and onions. The beans are not your same old refried but pintos seasoned to perfection. A delightful lunch. We would have given the place 5 stars but hubby's hash browns with his otherwise very good ham and egg breakfast were nasty greasy. Too bad because everything else was excellent. Sorry yelp but you got this one wrong. I ordered takeout and the waiter was salty with me. In person, when I picked up it was no different. I ordered a medium steak which ended up being cooked well done. They also forgot my biscuit which was supposed to come with the plate. My coffee was constantly refilled without having to ask. Ordered the hot mama omelette, all the flavors are great- the serrano chili has a kick and and hashbrowns were crispy! So, we were heading north on the 101 and had stayed a night in Paso Robles. We found this little nice country kitchen spot just 10 minutes north of PR. Phyllis served us and she was so nice. I had the Potato Skillet which was really good, my fiancée had the Machaca and also recommends it. Im from Scandinavia and have never been to a classic American truck stop like this. It was really authentic and the staff was super nice. The food was really good and we both strongly recommend this for breakfast to any hungry travelers. read more

Just by chance, perfect timing to stop in at Jose's and meet the lovely Phyllis. She does it all, welcoming, caring, great service, busing, and keeps it all straight. Nice counter space and 8 or so tables. All were full at 11:30 am but a quick wait. We shared the tuna melt and it was delicious. Fries were also good , hot and crisp, but I would try the homemade chips or onion rings. They looked great. Overall a nice respite from the drive and will stop again. read more
