This spot has a good selection on the menu and the portions are large. Nope, scratch that not just large.. HUGE. The flavor of everything was tasty, the only drawback was that the sweet potato fries were a little on the crispy side, if you know what I mean. They have a nice little outside patio area overlooking the 101 which is nice to sit on and watch the cars go by. When visiting the area I always plan a trip to Jose's Country Kitchen for breakfast. Being a creature of habit I usually order something that includes their delicious Chile Verde though any of the generously portioned breakfast plates is a great choice. While Jose's has a fairly large menu of lunch and dinner items never got past the breakfast menu. Today I went off program because one of my friends who lives in San Miguel sent me a picture of The Big Rig Burger that I just had to see up close and personal. This massive burger is built on a hubcap sized toasted sesame seed bun and stuffed with a one pound beef patty, bacon, jack cheese, mushrooms, avocado, strips of roasted green chiles, onions (grilled at my request), lettuce and tomato. This beast was well prepared, not super juicy but not dry and overall it was delicious. I treated it like a food challenge but in the end I lost. I am looking forward to the rematch. Wanting to try a new breakfast place, and based on other reviews, we went to Jose's. What we got was a very mixed bag. Upon entering we were quickly directed to a table - that hadn't been cleaned properly. After it was, I went to wash my hands in their bathroom - which also needed cleaning. Not good. We both had Francisco omelets, which were surprisingly bland and devoid of seasoning (but I did love the variety of fruit they gave me instead of potatoes). Sadly, the coffee, which can be a mediocre meal's saving grace, wasn't very good either. However, our waitress was wonderful. So... the 3-star rating is based on: Cleanliness: 1 star Food: 2 stars Coffee: 2 stars Fruit: 5 stars Service: 5 stars See what I mean? We stopped by this place after a long drive, haven't had proper food for over 8hours and were starving. Fortunately for us, this was a gold mine. The food was great and this is not just my hungry stomach talking. This place has traditional diner food with mix of mexican style additions to it. It is a cozy little place and it seemed like there was only one person waiting tables but it definitely did not affect the service. We were well attended to and the food arrived quick. Right off the freeway for some quick eat and go grub. Road trip stop. I make the drive from Vegas to Monterey regularly, so something that isn't fast food and convenient is ideal. Jose's is very no frills, and like others have mentioned very truck stoppish. But the service is friendly, and the food was good. I had the Jose's Burger with a huge roasted pepper in it and it was delicious. A no nonsense burger with fresh veg, well seasoned meat, and a side of onion rings that were not frozen.. yum. Just when I thought I had found the penultimate breakfast place in Templeton, I tripped over Jose's on Yelp. This place definitely has its merits and will be a place I will eagerly alternate with Joe's. Just don't tell the others that this is here, ok? While the light brew coffee was just ok, I can forgive, because I know Paso Robles has more than its share of gourmet coffee houses to feed my snobby habit. Moving on... We shared a Linguica Omelet with jack cheese, and sauteed onions, tomato, and mushrooms. Great linguica, this omelet was masterfully simple and good. I can definitely recommend this. To find this little gem, look for the 76 gas station/truck stop on the 101 Hwy north of town, in the middle of nowhere. Bad signage, there is nothing that says the name Jose's in front. And sure, this place looks divey, but this is a very good, clean one with friendly staff. And then there are the locals. A plethora of ball capped, bearded,Vietnam vets, who drive up in their pick up trucks with over sized tires. Trust me, they know good food, I would follow them anywhere. You think I'm making this up? I could not help but admire the food passing by...a massive breakfast burrito with chorizo, plump pancakes, thick, nicely done bacon, and of course, the chicken fried steak. I would definitely try this here, after tasting their food. If that is not enough, now we are talking homemade pies My disappointment was there were none. Sold out. Ok. This is EXACTLY the kind of place one hopes to find in a diner. Start with the waitress, Jeanine, whose warm, friendly welcome made us want to come back before we had even ordered. Plus, excellent (as in matching our) taste in music. Husband and I shared a GIGANTIC Denver omelette. Onions and peppers were perfectly grilled; ham was fine but not epic, and I would guess at least a four-egg omelette. As sides, husband picked grits and I chose corn tortillas. Vegetarian son had chiles rellenos (delicious) with rice, beans (more baked bean than Mexican bean style), corn tortillas, most of the slice of coconut cream pie and was almost full - which is kind of amazing if you know him. I ate some crust of the pie - which is rare - kind of sugar cookie-ish with a touch of cinnamon. We do this drive often and are thrilled to add a potential stop on the 101. It was your standard veggie patty but cooked to perfection, topped with swiss, and served on a bakery fresh bun. My baked potato was cooked perfectly.
