Note: Good food, mediocre ambiance. We were looking for a place we had neither been to. I was surprised this was so close to my work. Very tucked away in a small strip mall. You won't easily see it from the major streets. I loved the food. The menu is really robust so it's hard to choose, especially if you are looking at rolls. We got two rolls, the El Camino which was spicier (its not crazy spicy in case you're worried) and the Island. Both were fantastic, fresh, well balanced and filling. Definitely check the wall for specials before you order. After we ate, I saw the spam musubi and decided to check it out because believe it or not, I've never had spam! It was a nice creative nibble (not sure how common spam musubi is, but I don't think I've seen it before). The people were very nice and friendly. Their quality of kindness matched the quality of the food. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was the ambiance. It is very bright and tight sitting. I was about to lose my mind over a guy a few tables away as I could hear him chewing so obnoxiously, so it's that close. It quickly got louder as it got busier and a bit stuffy. Stepping outside was actually a burst of fresh air. I think maybe turning the lights like 15-20% lower could actually make a big difference. It is more the place you'd take a friend, unhappy spouse, casual date, or coworker. It's not the type of romantic setting you'd want for anything serious. Also, not too conducive to groups over 4, and even that may be pushing it because there is not much space in there. Would definitely come back! read more

While we enjoy the quality and service of this restaurant, even in these challenging times, Covid is no excuse to charge so much for a rice, salad and a handful of chopped pieces of fish. We have discovered Joy sushi about two months ago, since then it has become our go to place for sushi. On our first visit we ordered a Bento box of chicken teriyaki, donburi, and two sushi rolls, all were extremely good. Since then we've been going there on a regular basis loving every visit. This was my first time coming to Joy Sushi. With the current climate they have set up their restaurant for takeout only, so I won't review the interior. But I will say they took great care to ensure the cleanliness and safety of their customers. Even to the point of having a basket of clean pens and a separate basket to put used pens that would be sanitized before reuse. It was lunch time and I was immediately warmly greeted by the staff. They have a very large selection on their menu and I went with the El Camino, Golden California, and an order of gyoza to go. My order was quickly made. When I got back home to eat it, I realized they had given me complimentary miso soup that was hot and delicious. All my sushi rolls were packed with care in the container and looked beautiful. Each roll was delicious and very satisfying. What really stood out were they gyoza. I've been to many sushi restaurants and you can tell when gyoza are handmade or purchased frozen. Joy sushi's gyoza taste handmade and were excellent. The price was reasonable, the service was polite, and the food was great. I will be back. read more

I came here with my sis n law and got a dragon sushi roll which wasn't the best, pretty skimpy on the tempura shrimp inside but it wasn't going to make a deal about it. As we're leaving I pay and leave a tip, as I'm putting my nephew in the car the waitress runs out and asks me for a bigger tip...regardless of how much my tip was I left one, even though my sister in law received her food after everyone else ate, no refill on water or asking us if we needed anything else. This is a very solid Japanese restaurant that's hidden in a strip mall in Mountain View. Luckily this place is only a short walk from my boyfriend's apartment and we are frequent visitors. We like to come here when we are craving comfort Japanese food in a casual setting (i.e. tasty rolls and bentos without the need for a fancy restaurant feel). Some of it favorite dishes include the LUNCH AND DINNER BENTOS -- we usually get salmon teriyaki, CA rolls, some sort of sashimi. I'm also a fan of the CHERRY BLOSSOM ROLL and CATERPILLAR ROLL. I recently tried the HAE DUP BOP, which is a sashimi salad over rice with spicy sauce on the side. This dish surprised me because it's similar to a chirashi bowl but with extra veggies. I enjoyed the squid and salmon pieces. All of the fish tastes pretty fresh and the prices aren't outrageous. I feel that the bentos and bowls are pretty large portioned while the rolls are standard size. Service can be a bit slow but I'm fine with them taking the time to prepare our tasty food. Normally they aren't super busy, but there have been weekend nights where the place gets packed. They accept reservations. I know that we will be back again! Next time I'll try an udon bowl or one of their fish lovers specials (sake/salmon calls my name!). read more

I came here today for dinner with a friend and we both enjoyed our dinner here. To start off with an appetizer, we ordered the chicken karage. The karage was nice and crispy and had a juicy texture. It was really good! For our entrees, we ordered one samurai roll and one lambada roll. Both rolls hit the spot for both of us! Normally, I don't enjoy rolls because from my experience, usually restaurants pour too much sauce on their rolls, but this place put on a perfect ratio of sauce on their rolls to ensure it's not overpowering. I would say this place definitely would be my go to if I am craving sushi rolls. I feel like the service could be better though. This shopping complex and this sushi place is very very petite. I do not recommend coming here with a large group! If you pass by the dollar store, is extremely limited. Don't scout a spot for too long, because the parking lot will spit you out before you know it, that's how tiny it is. I'd come here regularly when I worked in Mountain View, and I recently returned, thinking that t would be same 'ol, reliable Joy Sushi. I was a little surprised to see they'd redone the interior. They took down this map/treescape they used to have on the wall, with all their regulars/close friends' pictures and signatures. I think the ownership must have changed, but I liked the mom-and-pop feel that it used to have. It still has that, but the interior has been stepped up a little bit. There's black banners, and lighting on the wall instead, making it feel a smidge upsale/classier. The menu has also changed - it was always a bit expansive but I feel like they've added more rolls. The edamame came out first, which is uncommon at sushi places lately, but was very overcooked/mushy. I wouldn't get it next time. They bring complementary miso soup and a salad, for dinner only I believe, but the salad translates to: a few shaved carrots and iceberg lettuce, with not enough creamy miso dressing. The miso soup was fine. I got the Monster Roll, and my bf got the Baked Lobster Roll. His was...extremely small. Still 8 pieces, but hardly any filling or rice. I get that lobster is expensive, but make it more obvious would you? My roll almost doubled his. I had spicy crab, tempura and cream cheese in mine. It was good, but very one-noted. Their spicy sauce isn't anything to rave about either. I'm not sure I recommend getting their nigiri/sashimi. We have in the past, and it was a mistake. Service was decent, we got the check in a fair amount of time, and they came over immediately to take our order. They must have a bunch of regulars. We were excited to try this in looking for good Japanese food and seeing the reviews and food pics. Very disappointed. Had dinner. A rainbow roll, nothing like the pictures. Looked sloppy, small pieces of fish on top, and a piece of Halibut on top that was so tough and stingy I couldn't swallow it and had to spit it out. I told the waitress and she checked with the kitchen and I was told it was because they got the fish yesterday and it was so fresh?? Nothing done about it. I also had unagi don, was fair, just eel on rice, again nothing in presentation like this as shown in Yelp pics. My wife had a Bento box which was average. The spicy tuna roll on it was again so so. My conclusion is the sushi there is not very good just thrown together fish on rice. The hot food seems average. I have no idea why it has 4 stars. The draft Sapporo beer was cold and delicious. My wife's bento box came to her an easy 10 minutes before I was served my rainbow roll, probably 20 minutes before my appointment unagi don. The waitress was very nice and not at fault. Lastly, when I masked up to go inside for a moment, the sushi makers, definitely not chefs, had their masks off and quickly pulled them up. Would expect them on when working with raw fish. I tried their sushis on July 24th around 8pm. It was actually a pickup order of three rolls, one of tuna, one of fresh salmon and one of shrimp. The quality of the shrimp was ok, but it was very hard to find those tiny shrimps in the roll. The other two rolls were just awfully rolled. Whenever I tried to eat one it fell apart ! Plus the quality of the seaweed was very bad, it was very dry and hard to swallow ! And as I am used to dip my sushis in the sauce cup. The soy sauce bags were not convenient. I had sushis many times before. I would say that was the worst sushi I have ever had. I think there are plenty of other places to try than to return to this nightmare ! I am just pissed.
