Four stars: because this is probably the best 3-star sushi place there is! The sushi here isn't amazing but it's good, prices are fair, and the rolls are huge! It's a solid choice and very satisfying if you are craving some rolls. The lambada roll is one of my favorites because I like a little spicy. The sunshine roll is also good if you like refreshing salmon. Their sushi lovers plates are also good. We've also ordered their party platter with 60 rolls and it's a great item for catering or potlucks with a wide variety of massive rolls. I've mostly ordered takeout from here and only eaten in once, but the wait was not bad. If you're craving some sushi but aren't looking for something super fancy or a long wait, this is a great go-to. read more

i came here with 3 colleagues for a team lunch since this place had a little of everything....sushi, ramen, udon, and bento boxes. we got lucky, since there was exactly 1 table open when we arrived, around 1145 on a friday. we were given menus, and immediately started perusing to see what was good. i knew that i wanted to order sushi, and there were a ton of different roll options: traditional rolls, hand rolls (maki) and nigiri. i chose the fishirrito roll ($13.95) since it was very different from anything i'd ever seen before, and very unique since the wrapping was made out of soy paper. the inside had crab meat, tuna, hamachi, salmon, and avocado, and came with a side of spicy joy sauce. i loved the taste of this roll, so many different types of raw fish mixed with creamy avocado. i cautiously dipped my rolls into the joy sauce and was delighted that it wasn't too spicy (not even for a spice wimp like me!) before i knew it, my 8 pieces of sushi were gone, and safely resting in my tummy. service was quite swift, as our orders were taken within minutes, food delivered within :10-:15, and check brought promptly at the conclusion of our meal. this is a great place to grab lunch if you work in the area, or happen to be in the area during lunchtime. it's outside of downtown mv, so you avoid the massive crowds, waits, and parking horrors that accompany castro st. i definitely recommend coming here on the earlier side (before noon) if you want to be seated immediately. they also do takeout if you're in a rush! read more

This wasn't the closest sushi restaurant but it had high Yelp ratings so I took a chance. I got here about half an hour prior to closing and I was ordering food to go. They were very accommodating and cheerful. The wait for the two items I ordered was longer than I would have liked. I got the baked lobster and the dancing shrimp which were both good but I am used to more flavorful rolls in L.A. 4 stars for the waitresses and the food. Loved the sushi bar pleasant staff always attentive and polite. Lunch bentos are the best and priced very reasonably. Their menu is very extensive and not limited to sushi rolls and sashimi they do have tempura, appetizers, donburi, desserts, Japanese beers and sake. Interior space is quite small though I rather be at the sushi bar watching the chef preparing sashimi and sushi rolls, so it was quite a treat they even spoke Japanese now you know they serving authentic Japanese dishes. I chose one of the lunch bento with three items for $14.95 five pieces of gyoza, tuna sashimi and mixed tempura that comes along with a bowl of miso, salad and rice. Quite appetizing I liked the tuna sashimi and the mixed tempura though it was bit greasy batter was fine. Within the next 20 minutes more people were coming by maybe eight or nine people always best to come in early and get a seat. Wouldn't mind coming back that's if I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I came here on a Tuesday night at around 7:15 and even though it was pretty full, there was no wait for 2 people :) Sake lovers plate (all salmon) was super worth it! Nigiri, maki, sashimi, and hand roll for $22.95 and it was very fresh. We also ordered 2 baked rolls- the joy king roll and baked crab roll. The joy king roll is your typical lion king roll and the baked crab roll sounded really unique to us- avocado and unagi inside, spicy crab, tempura crunch, and sauces on the outside. We were excited to try it, however when the rolls came, we noticed that they switched the insides of the roll. The joy king roll came with unagi instead of crab and the baked crab roll came with crab instead of unagi... It wasn't a big deal, but I would've preferred the rolls to be what they said they would be and I didn't want it re-made because baked rolls generally take longer to make Pros- very good deals, the rolls were $11.95 for a good portion! They also give miso soup and house salad on the house :) Cons- food took about 20-25 minutes to come out, which is a little long because it didn't look extremely busy. I noticed people around me who thought the food took a while as well, so if you're in a hurry, this might not be the best place for you! If I can give this place 10 stars out of 5 full stars, I would. I've been going here for almost two years now and never once did I have a bad experience in the Mountain View location. I understand that there's another Joy Sushi in San Mateo, however, I prefer this location the most. My usual orders are either the Joy King Roll, the Chicken Udon, or both! lol. I love how their food is made to order so when it arrives at your table, you can really taste the freshness of the food. The Joy King Roll can be best compared to the Lion King Roll at Old Town, however, there's a slight twist to the Joy King Roll as they include their own unique "special sauce". Whatever that sauce is, it's bomb-diggity and really enhances the various flavors encompassed within the roll. You know your sushi is fresh and perfectly crafted when you barely need to dip it in soy sauce to mask the flavor! Yes, it's that serious, here at Joy. The Mountain View location is a much smaller venue than that of the venue in San Mateo, meaning it can become quite congested during peak hour. However, don't fret, the service is relatively quick and guaranteed you'll be able to get seated, eat, and leave within an hour, depending how fast you eat. The customer service and quality food is fairly consistent and I've always had a pleasant experience when dining during lunch time. The Sushi Chefs are so friendly and are quick when it comes to preparing sushi rolls. Whenever I don't have time to dine-in, I usually order online via Yelp, which enables Eat 24 to place your order. All you need is to have your card on file, then you'll be able to place your order within minutes from the Yelp site! I usually try and order about 15-20 minutes before pick-up time to allow cooking time and any other hassles that they may have, especially during peak lunch hour (11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) Upon arrival, I just tell them my name, that I ordered via Eat 24 and they are able to pull up my order within seconds. So we've now tried this place multiple times over the past few months (each time ordering different things) and have really enjoyed it each time. We've ordered delivery through the Yelp app, and it's been flawless. But most important - food has been fresh and really delicious. We've not only been impressed of the flavor of the food, but also how well it's comes to-go. Some places we love have not been so great when ordering to-go, so it's been wonderful to find a place that does both well. Eh. My friend brought me here because her mom gave her a groupon for this place. Service was attentive and up to par, but the food wasn't... However, it is important to note that i am a sushi snob! My friend, who isn't very experienced with sushi, ordered 2 rolls that are more on the Americanized side-- one of them had spicy tuna inside with eel on top and the other with cooked salmon on the outside and shrimp tempura in the inside. I ordered the cherry blossom and the 8 piece sashimi with tuna and salmon (you pick 2 kinda of fish out of the options they give you, which includes hamachi and some others). The slices of salmon were like half slices; so not cool. They were like long skinny rectangles. On a brighter note, the sashimi were nice and chilly and I liked their presentation. They place the slices on slices radishes that are on top of a bed of ice. The fish seemed pretty fresh and did not appear to be colored, like some other sushi places. However, they were not the freshest fish I've ever tasted. Btw, they give you complimentary miso soup and salad. Most other places only give you them if you order a combination dinner or lunch. Overall, this place is pretty average. It can definitely not be compared to places like Sushi Tomi, Tanto, and Dan, but it's about the same as places like Yoshida and Gombei. For $9-$10 lunch bentos this place is a steal!. The 2 item bentos are pretty good for the price. They come with a sufficient amount of food at a decent quality. The sashimi they serve here is huge! I haven't had a chance to try their sushi yet, but I may in the future. They also take orders via an app called Order Ahead so if you're just doing pickup, its a breeze. This is a great lunch spot though, but be careful it does get fairly busy around noon on weekdays. Update: If you want to use their order ahead service, make sure you specify the sauces you want. The first time I got my tonkatsu sauce, the second time I didn't... It feels so incomplete, I wish they had been more conscious about that. I had long heard about Joy Sushi in San Mateo but had never had a chance to try them. Word was tha they were popular and offered good value and generous portions. When Yelp announced a deal for Joy Sushi, I was pleasantly surprised to see they also had a Mountain View location. Given it's fairly new, I decided it would be a good chance to check Joy out. First off, the Mountain View location of Joy Sushi is located in a strip mall, but more than that, it's really in the middle of nowhere. It's not really a restaurant area and in the evening is pretty empty. During the day, I can see it being more popular as it is close to some tech companies, but not during the night. It was empty when we arrived, but by the time we finished, a handful of diners had arrived. It's a fairly small space and can seat about 30 people and also had a sushi bar seating area. Although I imagine it's more of a rolls place, I decided to use my Yelp deal for all nigiri. Prices were a bit high given it's remote location and, after dining, I'd say a touch high for the quality too. I'm not a sushi snob, but felt the rice wasn't the best: it fell apart and was a bit cold/hard. Good thing I had the Yelp deal. Our selection: Amaebi - $5.50. It was fresh and included the fried amaebi heads, though they came out lukewarm. Hamachi Belly - $6.95. Our favorite of the night, but really too expensive for the location and ambiance. Escolar - $4.25. Decent Saba - good large slice. Missing the seaweed on top to counteract the fishiness but had some ginger and scallions. Tobiko/Ikura - enjoyed the large portions Salmon Skin Hand roll - too many deep fried small pieces of salmon skin. Overall, it was an ok nigiri sushi experience. The prices are almost exactly the same as the San Mateo location and while that may make some sense, I'd say the Mountain View location is more remote and a much less popular and busy location. I'd say they have to drop their nigiri prices a $1 or two to be competitive with some of the offerings we have in the area. The service was fine, but a bit slow and he wasn't familiar with the menu so didn't know an item or two we were ordering or if it was available. It could have been a language issue. I had used a groupon to try out this place. Sometimes, I would go order take out for lunch, but this time my boyfriend and I had gotten dinner. We ordered three specialty rolls and it tasted great! My boyfriend didn't like the rolls with the shrimp tempura inside because the tempura tasted soggy to him. Since I live near the area, I'd probably go back because they have cheap three item combo for about $15, so that includes beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki and with the spicy tuna roll they would charge me $1 more to sub out the Cali roll. Then she brought our complimentary miso soup and salad! The soup was average, I had three pieces of tofu and one piece of seaweed. The salad was premixed with dressing, heavy on the dressing. I was so excited to try the lobster roll because some of the other reviewers had mentioned it was amazing but it was just okay to me. It was way over sauced, it overwhelmed the roll for me. I felt like there wasn't enough sauce on that one, the salmon was kind of dry. I can't really tell how fresh the fish was because of all the sauces. The mixed tempura was just alright, it had much more breading than I'm used to having at sushi places so I found it to be extremely filling. I was STARVING when we finally got here. My GPS was giving me issues so it took awhile to get here. When our food was brought out, we realized that it was way too much for us! The island and lobster rolls were 8 pieces each!
