My fave sushi spot! I wouldn't consider myself a regular here, but I'm here pretty often (at least once a week for lunch). It's a small place and can get very crowded fast so prepare to wait if you plan on eating there for lunch. Service can be excruciatingly slow during the rush hour too. They greet you once you enter which I think is pretty awesome. I only go for a few of their rolls but the ones I do get are so yummy! Normally I get the tiger, lambada, island, or ninja roll. I think the salmon they use is on point! So fresh it almost melts in your mouth. The only reason why I only gave four stars is because I went to dinner there once and the tiger rolls I ordered were a lot smaller than the ones I usually get at lunch. Maybe it was because I arrived an hour before closing, I'm not sure. But the portions should be consistent throughout the day. Overall, good food and nice staff! read more

Great service and good quality sushi (for the price). The restaurant is located in the same plaza as Dollar Tree. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the servers are really nice and the portions are a good size. My boyfriend and I came in for dinner on a weeknight - we ordered a hot sake, lobster roll and sake lover's plate (hand roll, salmon maki roll, 8 sashimi slices, 2 nigiri). Salmon slices were huge and not too fatty either. Also, since it was our first time, they gave us free edamame and the chef made us a free shrimp tempura deluxe roll - very nice! The crowd loitering around the door of this tiny restaurant almost scared us off, but I'm so happy it didn't! I think a lot of people order takeout from here given its tiny size, so the two of us were seated immediately. Definitely don't bring the whole crew here--you'll fill the whole restaurant! Getting sushi with me (celiac, so no gluten whatsoever) and my boyfriend (avocado allergy) is always a little embarrassing, since we have to play 20 questions and modify our rolls a lot. The server here was fabulous with recommending rolls they could modify and keeping track of everything. No gluten-free soy sauce though, so BYO. The fish here is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and we split 3 rolls. I would recommend anything with their super buttery salmon! Fish-to-rice ratio is pretty good. The rolls are creative and they have a lot of variety. The best part: shockingly affordable. We spent $30 for a full meal for two. I can't wait to come back! read more

Lunch was great. Decided to try this place a second time after a not so cool dinner time experience. I did not care too much for the rap like music selection. Service was just ok. Server never ask me how the meal was or refilled my water. When the waiter brought me the check, no pen was in the bilfold for me to sign. Okay, so I had to get up to flag him down for a pen. Definitely a great place to go eat sushi! not the best of quality but the quaint little family atmosphere was great :) I went here with two of my friends last night just to grab a bite for dinner. I got four rolls (so ambitious).. I got the tuna roll, eel roll, gyoza roll, and foster city roll. I don't recommend the foster city roll and the gyoza roll was better than I thought! Came here to enjoy my first sushi of the new year and this place did not disappoint. The shop is a bit small in size but nicely decorated and comfortable. They have a huge selection to choose from and by huge I mean 8, count it, 8 pages of rolls to choose from! A lot of the rolls are very reasonable priced. Some of the ones tried were the spider, cherry blossom, ichiban and mango paradise. All I can say is good quality and quantity, fresh tasting fish, and ending in awesome! Service was fairly prompt with frequent tea and water refills. This place is worth coming back a few times to enjoy more special rolls. read more

We used to love going to Joy Sushi but the past two times we've had a bad experience. Two times in a row, the tempura sushi we ordered came soggy and totally non-crispy. The sushi roll we ordered came topped with tempura crunch and there was sadly not even a little bit of crunch left in the tempura that tasted like it had been made a long time back. We've visited when they're not as busy in the past and had a good experience. Perhaps they're getting busier these days and don't pay attention to every roll that's made, but after two such experiences we likely won't be back. read more

We loved Joy Sushi in San Mateo, so we were thrilled they opened one in Mountain View. Huge rolls and great service. This is definitely the place to go if you like big rolls; 1.5 rolls per person is a full tummy for sure. No free miso soup and salad like in San Mateo, but the rolls are about $1-$2 cheaper, so that's the trade-off. But everything tastes the same as the original location, which is terrific. I agree with Kristine Y.'s assessment completely: "Pros: 1. Same great Joy Sushi food. 2. Great service 3. Not too busy (you won't have to wait to be seated or for someone to take your order). Cons: 1. Awkward location in Mountain View (I would have hoped they would be a little closer to Castro Street). " The location is really random and there is NO ambiance. Bummer because we want Joy Mountain View to do well and stick around. Maybe it's been a while since I've had good quality sushi, but JOY SUSHI really stood out to me for its quality. The fish was fresh, bursting with flavor, and generous in portion. The staple Hamachi (yellowtail) and Hotate (scallop) stood up to the test and passed with flying colors. I also had a fun time with their appetizers--edamame gyoza, shrimp shumai, vegetable spring rolls, and Croquette. Each one was unique in flavor and delicious! Also, some of the photos of the interior are outdated--you'll be happy to see that the place has ample "ambiance," complete with dark-wood floors and modern tableware. read more

I happened upon Joy Sushi since it is now located in the same spot of another place I used to grab take-out from a few years ago. As a vegetarian (who eats shellfish) I am always a little apprehensive about trying new places.. but I was starving and figured I would give it a go and get a sampler. I ordered the following (to go): Tempura roll w/o tobiko and sauce Tempura roll w/o tobiko and sauce + cream cheese Inari Kappa Roll Avocado Roll EdeMame Mixed Tempera When I opened the boxes I noticed that one of the tempera rolls had sauce and one didn't... to their credit... I did not make a special mention of "no sauce" when I ordered the additional roll... lesson learned. For being to-go - the shrimp held up nice and was still somewhat warm when I got back to the office... The sauce was not horrible and not overly sweet as you get at some places. All of the rolls were very large and the tempura rolls were extra large = about the size of a traditional Spider Roll at most places... They didn't skimp on the cucumber or avocado either. I did have the second one fall apart a bit.. but I somewhat expect that from a larger roll. The avocado and Kappa (cucumber) are often difficult to mess up and I think that Joy Sushi goes the opposite. They are very substantial rolls and both tasted fresh and crisp. The inari was a little "sweaty" the sweet sauce was dripping off the tofu and not as firm as I like.. but it was a standard and simple inari - which is what I had hoped. The EdeMame could have used some salt and while I prefer mine cold - These were lightly cooked and not mushy - which was great. The tempura was just "eh".. the shrimp has nice flavor and was not fishy at all - which you can sometimes come across... the veggie selection didn't wow me... but I typically like yam, mushrooms, eggplant, etc... The décor is simple and boring, but very much like the restaurant that it replaced. This located is not bad if you work in the area and the reason that they got my business to-day... which is largely take-out business anyways. I would go back for another take-out lunch and may even venture to try their Udon when the weather gets cold again.... Not the best sushi I have ever had but reasonably priced for decent sized rolls and fresh ingredients... read more

This place has so much that's good about it. They have friendly staff who will greet you when you arrive and leave. The sushi is simply delicious and very well put together. Whether ordering the traditional rolls or the more fancy ones, I've never been disappointed. Their miso soup is perfect. Sometimes they will serve free fruit dessert after the meal which is awesome.
