At a "late" hour went here intentionally as a first-time ever to a sushi house since I don't actually eat sushi. I like my food cooked but *now* know most sushi places have cooked fried foods! Easy to locate and free parking in front. Several people inside eating so that is actually a good sigh. There was a party of abt seven sitting there having finished their food. They apparently ALL wanted separate bills and it was a big surprise to see the waitress come over presenting to each separate checks to each of them! wow!! Ordered the pot-stickers and mussels, with the Tempura Shrimp as a main, and that comes with salad, soup and rice. I was surprised when they delivered two soups to my accompanying friend and I though we had only ordered one main entree. Each item came hot and fresh, and though I have refrained from eating salads of any type while stateside (I don' like the dressing or type of lettuce, etc), I did eat theirs with a light sauce and it was quite good and tasty! My friend was shocked that I ate it too since she knows I don't eat salads here!! The shrimp arrived piping hot and was good but with little flavor. Probably what I enjoyed most was the medium-sized mussels I ordered and were topped with a sauce also - it was very good, and tasty. The restaurant is tiny and was pretty busy when we went for lunch. I tried a bento box with chicken teriyaki and tonkotsu. The chicken was good but the tonkotsu was a bit overcooked. The sushi looked better so maybe I will try that next time. This is a great spot for some Japanese if you want to avoid downtown crowds. read more

When I try a new sushi place I ask for two things; 1) For the restaurant to be clean 2) For the service to be friendly Joy Sushi passed my initial Sushi Restaurant litmus test with flying colors. The servers were extremely nice and the restaurant was spotless! I ordered a cup of miso soup and a hot tea to start. The miso was delicious but could have used some more tofu/seaweed in it. The tea was super hot but hit the spot. I have a normal regimen I order when trying a new sushi restaurant. I usually stick to basic rolls and try to see how they treat the standard fare, then leave experimentation to my second visit. I ordered my 3 normal rolls, Spicy Tuna, Super White Tuna and a California Roll my review of each are below; Spicy Tuna- The tuna was rich in color and tasted fresh, all of the rolls were freshly prepared none of that pre-prepared nonsense some other places are trying to pull off these days. The roll could have had a bit more kick to it, I recommend they do that in the future, but what do I know. Super White Tuna- This roll was my favorite... The sushi chef sliced the fish perfectly and there was a good fish/rice ratio. For that matter all the rolls were fairly well sized. The fish tasted super good. California Roll- I am not sure of this but I think they put a little may in their crab mixture. The roll had a sweet taste to it. I'm not a huge fan of Mayo but there wasn't that much mixed in this roll and it didn't overpower everything as easily as it could have. All in all, I would say that Joy Sushi hit the spot and that I'd go back. I'm gonna give them 4 stars because when I see a 3-star sushi place I think "hmmm... maybe not" and Joy Sushi doesn't deserve that. This is a solid neighborhood sushi joint. Fish has been fresh every time, decent portions of fish, rolls not falling apart like you get at the shadier spots. Service is friendly, if decidedly average. I thought I beat the lunch rush today (there were maybe 6 people eating when I arrived), but it still took over 20 minutes for me to get a 2-item bento box to go. I had to remind them I was waiting for my food. Ah well, I survived somehow! Come here for good sushi at a fair price. That's probably all I really have to say for Joy. I've lived in the area for 5 years but I've held off trying Joy Sushi because I figured how good can this sushi place off in the back of a strip mall in the middle of Middlefield be? One night, strapped for new options I decided to bite the bullet and give it a shot. BOY AM I GLAD I DID!!! Joy sushi knocked it out of the park with their welcoming atmosphere, their mom & pop feel, and their delicious sushi. I've gotten various rolls (Tiger, Lambada, Rainbow, a few others) as well as their lunch bento boxes and their sashimi and nigiri. It's *all* good. I've gone 20+ times since then, and have introduced my coworkers to Joy sushi as well and they all love it too. Give Joy Sushi a shot, you won't be disappointed. Since it's in a strip mall parking is not an issue, but if you go at lunch time, around 12:15 occasionally you may wait 5-10 mins for a table b/c the dining area isn't very large. read more

This is a great, affordable sushi spot in this area. A lot of similarly priced restaurants will skimp on the fish or the sizes of the rolls, but this is not the case for Joy Sushi. The quality of the fish is good, and I feel like I get my money's worth. The temaki (hand rolls) are quite large, and they contain a sizable amount of fish. At OTHER restaurants in this area at a similar price point, the temaki are painfully small and they stuff them full of nearly bad fish that is drowning in sesame oil to disguise the almost rotten flavor--HOWEVER, this is not the case at Joy Sushi. The fish is always fresh and the serving sizes are GENEROUS! I love it. I highly recommend this restaurant! Island Roll - crab, tempura, cucumber, salmon, lemon slice, tobikio, joy sauce. Joy sauce is nice. Crab was disgusting, and I'm a huge crab lover too. It was real crab but they took all the non meaty parts and just squished into a bunch of mini strips of crap. tempura was nice. lemon slice made no sense, I just took it off. I would try a different roll Salmon nigiri - just meh. Best sushi near the area is Kappo Nami Nami. Sake Roll - not bad, just piece of salmon in a roll! Ichiban Roll - I really liked this one. 8 small pieces. Yellowtail was nice, wish the eel had less bones. Would get again. read more

Yes, but what is in it?...nehr mind. I don't know...there is something about 'mizo' soup that my mind says, 'matzo balls'...I dunt know.....whatever! Waiter brings my diet coke. Can I get some lemon please for my diet coke? You remmon, with a head nod? Yes, I would like some lemon please for my diet coke. Waiter brings out the the 'traditional mizo soup'...hello, can I get a spoon? Waiter brings out a small salad....hello, can I get a fork up in this place? Waiter in heavy accent: you no chopsticks as he shoves them toward me? No! I no chopsticks that's why I asking for fork fule! I go to the San Mateo Joy Sushi a few times before and absolutely love it. I was so excited that the same owner opened one in Mountain View, so I went and tried it out. The location is somewhat in a residential area, unless you live or work close by, it is not an ideal location. The San Mateo is right downtown, so is very lively with the other restaurants. The place is clean, although it feels like a fast food joint decor rather than a normal sit down restaurant. Quiet disappointed. When we got there at 6pm on a Saturday night, we were the only ones there. The staff was very nice. San Mateo location gives you free Salad and Miso soup as soon as you sit down. With this location, NOPE. They said it is because their menu price is cheaper than San Mateo. I looked at the menu, not much of a difference, maybe $1 or so?? Disappointed on that too. That night, the sushi rice was hard, the rice wasn't fully cooked, so all the rolls that we ordered was less than perfect. Needless to say the Nigiri was awful with the hard rice. I mentioned it to the waiter, the waiter didn't do anything about it. If the rice was perfectly cooked, (which I have to say this is the FIRST time ever ever I go to a Japanese Restaurant, and the sushi rice is hard), then I would say the fish is fresh and the rolls would have been good. I don't think I would go to this place again, there are plenty of other good Japanese Restaurants in Mountain View. For $10 average for the sushi rolls, with 2 adults + 2 kids bill came out to be $70, we could have a much nicer environment and better sushi! Sorry Joy! read more

Chicken karaage and rice for each of the kiddos, yummy. Seafood udon, good. I don't normally say this, but... could've used a lil more salt. Scallop, Unakyu and Poke Seaweed rolls, all very good but too big (wayyy too much rice). So it's not possible to eat these with finesse, at least not for me. ;) It's fine because I was out to dinner with my family, and the kids had fun telling me I look like a chipmunk (hur hur), but if you're out with friends or co-workers... not so funny anymore. ;) Service - quick and friendly. Our server Daniel was phenomenal! He was friendly, prompt, and generous with our service. We came here the day before Christmas Eve and he offered us a free large sake (as long as we promised to drive safely) after finishing our purchased large sake. Seriously?! I'm not a huge fan of the tipping phenomenon in the states but I'll (try to) tip the crap out of you if you're kind and generous like this guy! We also received a salad and miso soup after ordering 2 rolls, which is pretty uncommon based on the many sushi places I've visited. We cheers'ed with another couple as well as the sushi chef and overall, had fantastic time! I started being a fan of Joy Sushi when I lived in San Mateo. I must say the San Mateo location is considerably better and I need to go write my five star review for that location but I am currently living in Mountain View and this is the location I frequent. I seriously live a block from this place, they take orders online, and this definitely effects how often I eat here. That being said these are what I look for in a typical Japanese/sushi place. Variety of Special Rolls - 5 - They have a fantastically large special roll menu that includes all the staples and more. Variety of Appetizers - 5 - Their appetizer selection is excellent and just like above they have staples and more. Quality/Freshness of Fish - 3.5 - This is probably where they lack the most, however by no means is their quality bad it just isn't the 4 that I would give to the San Mateo location. Non Sushi Options - 4 - A plethora of options that are all standard Japanese fare. Price - 4 - Relatively cheap considering the amount of food you get. List of things I usually order from: 49er Roll, Ninja Roll, Calltrain Roll, Shrimp Shumai, Tempura, Bento Box, Gyoza, Unagi Don. If you are looking for a casual sit down Japanese place with tons of options that isn't going to charge you out of the water for the freshest fish Joy is my pick in the area. read more

Came here Wednesday night with a friend. Was able to get seated right away at 7pm when arrived. The places was about half full. It was nice to offered the seaweed tempura on the house. It was crunchy and well, seaweed tasting. Not something I would order. It was weird that it was paired with sweet and sour sauce instead of the usual tempura sauce. I got the sashimi salad. It was well worth the $11.95. I picked salmon and hamachi. They gave plenty of fish. I liked the dressing, like a lemon ponzo ginger tasting. It was very refreshing. There was also seaweed salad. My friend got some nigiri (not huge pieces), and we also got two rolls to share. They have like five pages of different rolls. We had the dynamite and baked scallop. As most rolls are, they all end up tasting about the same. Fish and mayo. Next time I would like to try some of the other rolls to see if it is anything different. However sometimes they seem to give the wrong cut of salmon on their sushis (that is why I don't give 5 stars) I also like their Cali rolls with fake crab meat. Just went here because of a Yelp deal. The waitresses are super sweet, but not the best at keeping your drink refilled, even when you're right in front of them. The quality of fish isn't that great, so I don't recommend sashimi. The wakame is the standard wakame I've grown to love. And if you are getting their rolls, I recommend the mango roll. It had a good sauce on it along with sliced mango and yellow tail on a California roll. I love things that are deep fried which led me to the dynamite roll, deep fried white tuna, salmon, tuna & Joy special sauce - I could have done without that on my palette. Hidden little neighborhood gem! Not located in the grandest of plazas, but the restaurant is cozy. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the sashimi is buttery fresh. And they use REAL crab meat in their rolls (not that cheap imitation crab!) And the owner is the sweetest little lady :3 Things I've tried: (1) Island Roll - Everything about this roll is 10/10, especially the slither of lemon on top and real crabmeat (without mayo). (2) Sashimi salad - BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK right here. For just $11.95, you get so so so much sashimi. It's a mix of salmon, tuna, albacore, etc. The ginger-sesame dressing (equal parts tangy-sweet) is pretty good, and the small scoop of seaweed salad is a nice touch as well. (3) Chirashi bowl - if you prefer rice (instead of salad) with your fish, then this is the way to go. The price, $18 during dinner, is pretty standard with other sushi places. Comes in a nice, large bowl. (4) Joy Scallop Roll - there is so much going on here. Think Lion King Roll, but with baked scallops instead! It was pretty delicious, but the "Joy sauce" was a bit too much and overall, a very overwhelming roll. Would not order again. (4) Bento boxes - great deal for lunch at $11 but nothing really special. At first, I didn't want to come back. Then at lunch time today, I was randomly craving a bento box. I checked Yelp and lo and behold, I had a note waiting from James, the manager of Joy Sushi. I called this morning to speak with him, but I think the staff thought I was a representative of Yelp. I told them I'd like to come in around lunch time to speak to James personally, and we set an appointment. I came in 20 minutes early and ordered another bento box for the hell of it. This time I got salmon teriyaki and BBQ short ribs. My salmon was delicious and fresh. It was a little crispy around the edges, but that's how I prefer it. The ribs were OK, but I'm particular about my ribs being from Texas. In short, the food was pretty tasty and the staff was very attentive. To my surprise, James not only offered me a refund of my last meal, he also comped my meal today. Nothing tastier than a free lunch, kids! In short, I was impressed enough by today to give this place another try. I'm glad too - sometimes you just need a bento box lunch, and I'm glad there's a decent joint in walking distance from my office. read more

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the servers are really nice and the portions are a good size. My boyfriend and I came in for dinner on a weeknight - we ordered a hot sake, lobster roll and sake lover's plate (hand roll, salmon maki roll, 8 sashimi slices, 2 nigiri). Salmon slices were huge and not too fatty either. Also, since it was our first time, they gave us free edamame and the chef made us a free shrimp tempura deluxe roll - very nice!
