Another long overdue review. Dr. Hellman is such a fantastic Doctor! She's so sweet! She's a perfect doctor to treat problem skin. I couldn't ask for a better doctor--her staff, Karen, is also a lovely lady. She took the time to explain the procedure and process before a treatment. Angela at the front desk is another great staff. The follow-ups and scheduling were perfect! Excellent team! The office is beautiful, overlooking Central Park. I visited the office a couple of times. Dr. Hellman is a top doctor specializing in skin, especially acne scars. I plan to use her for future treatments if I need one. I've tried the eye treatment and mini Morpheus. Meh...It was seen by Dr. Hellman after a 1 hour and 15 minute wait. My visit with the doctor was brief. I came in for a regular skin care check up and she did a cursory exam of my skin (avoiding certain areas, she didn't look at my feet or underarms at all, for instance). She tried to sell me on a few additional, non-necessary treatments (e.g., laser hair removal). I last visited Dr. Hellman over 5 years ago and had a similar experience (unjustifiably long long wait times), I thought that maybe they've been able to improve their practice since then but I guess not. I returned because a friend saw another doctor at the practice and raved about it. I most likely will not be returning. Waiting an hour and 15 minutes is unacceptable and disrespectful of my time. read more

Dr. Hellman is wonderful. She has a clean well-run office and knows all her patients well and by name. She is also very, very smart. I have not been to her for cosmetic treatments, so I can't speak to that. But I have benefited from her excellent care and phenomenal diagnostic skills for post-cancer care and shingles. Dr. Hellman has spoiled me for any other doctor; I judge all of them by her standards of care and caring, and nobody measures up! My daughter was recently diagnosed with a skin disorder. She is 20 years old and I live out of state. I called the office of Dr. Hellman to inquire about an appointment. The office manager spent considerable amount of time discussing my concerns and help guiding me in the right direction. In contrast, I had made several calls to other providers and was cut short with my questions and told to make an appointment. Since I wanted to make sure I was choosing the right provider, it was important to me that I had my questions answered before committing. I am very impressed with the empathy and professionalism of Dr. Hellman's office. This is not for Dr. Hellman; this review is for Dr. Kofinas who works in Dr. Hellman's group. I came to her for acne problems, and she made me spend a ton of money with no result whatsoever. And her staff is extremely unhelpful. They never answer the phone and don't call back if you leave a voicemail or send a text. I sent them a text once very upset that my medication wasn't working and told them to call me back. They didn't. Later I called and they said "oh yeah I saw your text" .... but you didn't do anything about it? More about my experience with the Dr: I came to her with cystic acne problems and told her I have oily skin but it is also sensitive and dries out easily. She told me my options were topical cream, hormone medication, both, or laser. That's it. I asked what to do about my enlarged pores. The only option is laser, not covered by insurance. She prescribed me Aczone cream at first. I went to go buy it and was almost charged $997. Hell no. After two days of working with my pharmacy and her staff, managed to find it for $250. I didn't buy it because she gave me enough samples for two months, and I didn't want to pay until I was sure it would work. 6 weeks later, nothing is better. Still having plenty of deep breakouts. I go back and she switches me to Epiduo cream and puts me on 50mg Spiranolactone, while noting I will probably need 100mg. I buy those and I use that regimen daily and 4 weeks later, still not even a slight improvement. This is when I got upset, given that I've spent 10 weeks and over $100 on her prescriptions, and my acne is still as prominent and deep as ever. I texted her (angrily, tbh) and asked her for another solution that actually works. After days of calling with no answer, I finally got a text response that I need to keep trying the regimen for two more months bc it takes time and there's nothing else she can do. And that I could find another dermatologist if I want. SO DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME. If you have acne, you're much better off with over-the-counter medicine. $6 Acne-free spot treatment is 10% benzol peroxide; Epiduo costs upwards of $70 and is only 3.5% benzol peroxide. Adapalene is a Vitamin A derivative, so just get some Vitamin A oil and mix it into your moisturizer. Don't waste your time or money on these dermatologists, who are only out there to serve Big Pharma companies with their fake inflated prices. read more

I came to Dr. Hellman's office for a treatment called SculpSure. It is a non-invasive, 25 minute body contouring treatment that is designed to reduce stubborn fat in the abdomen and flanks. I had done my research and I felt like burning the fat would be less painful and less harmful than freezing it with an alternative treatment called Cool Sculpting. I went in with realistic expectations. All I wanted to do was eliminate stubborn fat that i had in my abdomen and flanks (those lovely love handles). With just one painless treatment I saw great results. I was able to wear tighter shirts without my side flank protruding as it had done before the treatment. I went back for another treatment in the abdomen area today (first treated the flanks then two months later the abdomen). I am so happy that I didn't have to go under the knife. This treatment is good for people who are not fat but have stubborn fat that they can't get rid of no matter how hard they work out or how well they eat. Karen who treated me was amazing. So nice. terrible experience. was assured that my appointment would be covered by insurance as it was strictly to get a yearly preventative care cancer skin check. a few months later i was slapped with a large bill. i had been referred by a coworker with the exact same insurance plan as mine. her bill was $0 and mine was close to $200. they lied to me about and also sent me to collections. i'd recommend avoiding this practice. to clarify. they took care of my coworkers bill and wiped it to zero dollars. they then proceeded to lie to me and told me that she paid her bill. i called them out point blank. disgusting and unprofessional, as far as i am concerned they owe me $166 dollars. read more

I live and work in Brooklyn and usually see doctors in my neighborhood (I live in a blue-collar working-class neighborhood.) I was not impressed with the dermatologist my primary care reffered me to. I figured I should look in an upscale neighborhood to find the most professional doctor. Dr. Hellman is a skilled dermatologist with a friendly professional deameanor who has priced her services fairly. I have been going to her for about a year and have purchased a wide range of cosmetic dermatology treatments from her. I am always happy with the results and enjoy spending time in her company. Dr. Hellman suggests cosmetic options, and I have never felt pressure to try anything I didn't want. Recent staff changes have eliminated office waiting times and her assistants clearly aim to please. I went to Dr Hellman for 4 treatments of morpheus fractora laser. Unfortunately, even though it helped even out some of my previous scarring, it left additional scarring on my left cheek. I should have stopped going after the first session when I started to notice the marks on my face but Dr. Hellman convinced me it was just temporary. I also tried to discuss lowering the settings but she wouldn't listen to me. After the 4th session, the worst of the scarring occurred. I went back to discuss what could be done about the negative side effects and she completely gaslighted me. It has been over a year since the last session and the scarring is permanent. I have done light lasers and chemical peels with a new dermatologist which have helped even out skin tone but have not reduced the scarring. I'm not blaming Dr Hellman for this but the gaslighting and denial was completely unprofessional. She's not a dermatologist who can work with you if you have issues with her cosmetic procedures. I had a dermatologist I was happy with but it was impossible to get an appointment. At the recommendation of a friend, I made an appointment with Dr. Hellman. I was seen right away and I've dropped my old dermatologist like a hot potato since. Dr. Hellman and her staff are fantastic. They will bend over backwards to get you seen on time. Dr. Hellman's always makes me feel like I'm the most important patient and never rushes through like past doctors. The front office are always welcoming and actually remember who I am. As a woman, I love products... so I did try her own product line. The outcome... My skin looks amazing. The woman knows what she's doing. And as far as pricing, the products are cheaper than my old products that didn't give me the results I was looking for. read more

Went in for a laser treatment. I didn't get any results, but that isn't why I'm giving two stars. I paid hundreds for this treatment as I had some surgical scars I wanted to fade. After the procedure, I wanted to go in for a follow-up so that she could see the results and we could figure out if I should get more treatments, but she wouldn't see me again unless I put another $200 towards another procedure. I was warned that she was in this only for the money, but I went anyway b/c she was close to my work. Lesson learned. Any doctor that makes you pay hundreds for a post procedure check-up is a crook in my opinion. That said, at least she didn't damage my skin, so things could have been worse. read more

Dr Hellman really transformed my life. I've had acne for over 20 years and tried everything. Pills, antibiotics, lotions, peels, diets to cure acne. It wasn't until having pulse dye laser acne treatments that my acne went away. It was affordable and Dr Hellman really wants her patients to be satisfied. Her assistant also is really wonderful. They gave me alot of great encouragement going through the process. I had 8 treatments. There is no pain but you look like you have chickenpox. The first 5 treatments my face was "chickenpocked" for about a week after 5 treatments it lasted a few days. I stayed inside the first few days cuz I didn't feel comfortable to go out. Dr Hellman is an absolutely wonderful Dr. She is very knowledgable, and has been spot on correct in her diagnosis. Every cream she has ever given me worked effectively. She is highly trained and removed large, deep skin tags I had painlessly and with no scars (unlike some other Dr's). She never pushed any of her products, although they are very good. Her facial cream turned out to be the best one I ever used, completely cleaned and cleared my face. She is nice, courteous, and devotes sufficient time for all the questions and answers you need. I went to see Dr. Hellman about a small rash on my neck. I waited an hour for my appointment to then feel slightly rushed whilst in it. I left not asking everything i needed so I quickly ran back in to double check on something. She was kind enough to see me again for a few minutes. When I expressed my issue she then said I was fine and what I should worry about was the wrinkles in my forehead and that I should get botox. I am a 32 year old female. I take good care of my skin. I have never been more insulted. I went in for a completely different issue and was told this. I am not even going to take the cream she prescribed, especially from someone who pushes something as unnatural as botox to someone my age. I recommend not going to this docter. Some time ago I was here for a Botox/filler treatment. Although the dr. is nice and takes her time, in the end my conclusion is she is not skilled. The botox traveled and I developed a form of botulisme. This is a known risk of Botox, which I am not necessarily blaming the dr. for. What I cannot except is that when I mentioned this in the follow up visit, she flatly denied it: "I have never heard of such a thing before'. She totally disregarded it and she flatly lied in my face. This did it for me. And, why have people return for a follow up when you are not going to listen to any concerns? The filler was a-symmetrical, but she said that every face is asymmetrical, so no worries, but if I would pay for more filler, she could fix it (...). A year after the treatment her office called me: 'You next scheduled visit is coming up'. I never made a new appointment, but they try to make it seem as if that is common practice and try to spam you into returning. I recently had another botox treatment at another office, and it is only now that I realize how bad it was done at this office: then my forehead felt frozen for 3 months; now I do not feel a thing - like a different product has been used (at least that is what the new dr. suggested to me). I went in to get my ear lobes stitched up since I had been gauging them for 6 years now. I was in a bind and needed them closed in order to join the service. Without DR. Hellman I'd still be lost or sitting on my butt at home. The staff members are very helpful, friendly and made me feel like I've known them for years. The procedure was quick with only a bit of pain. I've been going to Dr. Hellman for 10 years. She saved my life by finding a cancerous mole on my back. She's also very skilled with a syringe - I get Radiesse filler twice a year and I look so much younger as a result. I just started Dysport, and I expect to continue that indefinitely. I don't know what these people are talking about saying that people at Dr. Hellman's office are rude or saying anything negative at all, for that matter. Those reviews are very, very old. From the first second I spoke with Dr. Hellman's staff on the phone I felt welcome. I was treated with kindness and respect. Whenever I go, everyone is extremely nice and cheerful. They remember my name and I am a fairly new patient. I have never had to wait and I always receive a reminder call. The office is pretty busy but I never see anyone else waiting for very long either and everyone else seems happy too. They have various samples of different products that you are able to try for free available in baskets around the office too. Ignore the old negative comments. Do not recommend! VERY UNHAPPY. Whenever I read bad reviews, I always wonder why people go through the trouble of posting them. I now have a reason to do so, unfortunately, and am sharing so YOU will have a full picture of this particular office/dermatologist. I read reviews on Dr. Hellman and thought she would be a great dermatologist to visit for a problem I was experiencing. I went to visit her and she diagnosed me with a condition and prescribed an ointment/lotion. During my follow up visit, I told her that I researched the condition that she diagnosed me with and that my rash didn't match it...at all.... so I stopped using the prescribed medicine. The rash went away on its own in time for my follow up visit, but I took pictures to show her. I then allowed her to inspect the area. While inspecting my skin (and possibly in an effort to make up for the previous diagnosis), she asked about the products I used for some light acne she was seeing. I told her what I used. She then gave me some free product samples to take home for acne. I left the office and was told that my insurance covered everything, and that there was no copayment. A few months later, I received a bill in the mail for about $200, for services including an ACNE BIOPSY and SURGERY for my follow up visit. Of course, I was highly confused, as not only did I not have a biopsy/surgery, Dr. Hellman didn't even TOUCH me during my second visit. So when did this biopsy/surgery happen?????? I called the office and was told, "No worries. That was probably a mistake from our old billing system. Don't worry about it." I received an updated bill later, which was lowered to about $50, but not itemized. So, I called the office for clarity. The receptionist stated "This is a deductible for the acne biopsy you received." I laugh and again explain that this must be a mistake. I didn't have a biopsy. The front desk staff member stated again "No worries. I'll look into this." It is now a YEAR later, and not only am I still receiving bills, I received a "final notice", charging me for services that I did not have. I've consulted my attorney about this, and determining if I will be filing a dispute. I have been on the phone with the billing staff and front office staff all week, and what have they stated, "The doctor's notes are stating that you did not have biopsy, but you had surgery." Not sure when this mystery surgery happened as she literally did not TOUCH me, only inspected my skin with her eyes. Dr. Hellman is still trying to charge me for services I did NOT receive. The price is not the issue, but the fact that Dr. Hellman is continuing to state that she gives me services that I did NOT have is a MAJOR issue. It shouldn't have been a surprise, after I was diagnosed with a condition that I did NOT have. It's my word against hers, I'm being told, and she's not budging. Are you kidding me? It's so silly and honestly absolutely ridiculous. What kind of professional can't own up to their mistakes? It's shame because I really (thought) I had a great experience at Dr. Hellman's office. I will NEVER return. I haven't ever had a bad experience with a physician, and I always pay my copayments and deductibles, but of course it's for services that I've actually had. Dr Hellman is an excellent dermatologist. She's very conservative, which I appreciate. She put explained the various options I had to deal with my cystic acne...oral medications versus laser therapy. She discussed the pros and cons of each one and even showed me before and after pix of patients that had gone the route of the laser therapy. I decided on the latter. The laser therapy took about 7 sessions to deal with my cystic acne but definitely worked. I paid at each session and definitely saw results after the first two treatments. One has to remember to be patient when receiving dermatology treatments. One laser therapy treatment may not result in anything. These things take time. Dr. Hellman was very supportive and explained everything to me. Even when offering to sell me her skincare products and me declining...she was most polite. Eventually, I did buy her skincare products and have to say that they are excellent, especially her exfoliator and BB creme. They're no pricier than any other brand and work very well. I now have a couple of friends that see Dr. Hellman, too, and feel the same way about her that I do. She's great!! read more

I've seen so many dermatologists over the last two years and I've learned a big lesson - You have to do your OWN research! After two-years-of-disappointing-doctors I sat down for days and did my own research. I ended up going to see Dr. Hellman based on a friends recommendation and guess what? Her advice/ suggestions we're exactly what I found to be the best course of action based on my research. She didn't try to push any procedures or products on me. She simply advised me on what she thought would be my best option. I let go and finally trusted a derm and I finally got some results/ progress on my issue. Dr Hellman is very experienced and quite good treating problem skin. Her products are good and reasonably priced. I agree with the comments about the waiting time at her office though. The staff can do a much better job to avoid long waiting times. Also, the office manager Karen has a terrible habit of asking for your credit card upfront. Just say no and pay at the end of your appointment. I have never seen any other doctor's manager who keeps asking for your card upfront, pretending all the time that she's saving you time. I don't know how efficient it is to do the billing before the appointment is finished since the services provided often change during the appointment. read more

I visited Dr. Hellman twice for the removal of many skin tags which were located on both sides of my lower neck. Although I was aware that this procedure was nothing to worry about, Dr. Hellman's attitude and demeanor is such that you are immediately put at ease. She is very friendly and low-key which makes everything that much more comfortable. She explained every step in a casual, almost humorous manner. Like many others, I am someone who suffers from acne and before seeing Dr. Hellman, my adult acne had severely gotten worse. When I was advised to see Dr. Hellman, I took the opportunity! While for my first visit I did have to wait, a while - that's only normal for specialty doctors, especially on your first visit. I ended up going with her special laser procedure specifically designed for people with acne called PDL, Pulse Dye Laser. There are no long lasting effects like with antibiotics or the dreaded accutane. The only down side is the immediate bruising that shows up from the spots that were treated and the worse your case is the darker the bruising and a slight discomfort during the procedure. With the bruising medication that Dr. Hellman prescribes you these go down in 3-5 days and within two treatments (once a month) I had already begun seeing changes...so the bruises were well worth it. I had a total of 7 treatments and while she prescribes a usual 4-6 treatments but will tell you that it is on a case by case basis. It is a little pricey because insurance does not cover it and you have to pay upfront at each appt, but if you can figure it out, it will change your life. Her products are amazing. Let me tell you, I went off them thinking that I only needed them at the time and then could continue with a nuetrogena or something like that. My skin just doesn't adapt to those drugstore brands, but it LOVES whatever Dr. H puts in her skincare line! A year later (yes a year... but now I'm done and it's amazing) I have mostly clear skin and have gone from wearing cover up every single day to applying some powder to my reddened areas while I now work with Dr. Hellman's Aesthetician, for microdermabrasion to help even out the skin and clear up the scars. Working with Dr. Hellman and Helen, the Aesthetician, has been wonderful. I've never been happier to know a dermatologist who actually knows what she's doing and finds effective ways to treat such a common problem. I'm not embarrassed when I go in there because I know that everyone is in there for mostly the same reason. The PDL is well worth the money and the time and while I still have occasional flare ups..mainly because of stress or probably some real crap that I ate - because lets be honest, they say its not what you eat, but we all know better! - they are NOTHING like what I use to get and my day to day routine has completely changed and gotten better! I can't thank Dr. enough for honestly changing an aspect of my life that I've had to put up with for so long. You won't be disappointed. And give her time. It's not going to be done in one appointment. read more

I went recently to have a mole check and discuss some concerns about aging. I loved the look of the office, modern, clean, yet warm and friendly. The staff was very efficient. The doc was really great! She spent a lot of time talking about sun protection, how to look out for bad moles, and also talked about good skin care habits. I was given a lot of options but there was absolutely no pressure "to sell". I felt very comfortable with Dr Hellman, loved her sense of humor and friendliness, and was knocked over by the views of Central Park from the room I was sitting at! I went to Dr. Hellman for a very frightening rash I developed on my leg. Her PA (very kind) saw me first, but brought in Dr. Hellman to look at me and explain my condition to me. I was informed that my rash was herpes, and understandably, I was in shock and very upset. Dr. Hellman said "Looks like you might have to cancel your wedding; your fiance might soon just be a memory." Instead of trying to calm me down and explain the possible causes/treatment options/what to do next, she just made me feel miserable and scared. I found this really unprofessional. I was confused, scared, and trying to learn more information about how this could happen and what to do about it, but she didn't really give me anything other than a diagnosis, a prescription, and advice to "cancel my wedding." To boot, they then started talking about acne treatment options when I was still trying to process this harsh blow. I went to another doctor who gave me a much more thorough explanation and advice.
