Imperio! On an epic adventure in a seedy bar in Colorado Springs, I had the unique opportunity to think long and hard about: (a) what restaurant I was going to visit first when I got back to Houston; (b) what restaurant I was really missing from all those miles away; and (c) why-why-why did that restaurant tickle my fancy so much. I really thought my answer was going to be Americas Post Oak because it is awesome. It seemed simple enough. Instead the true answer, blurted out over a game of darts and coupled with a shot of Patron, actually became Jus' Mac. Because like the film Lost in Translation, that badboy really grows on you over time after the experience until it finally builds to the point like you are under the Imperius curse and you must get in your car and drive to the Heights for some good food. There is no other explanation than to say just like Americas, it is simply awesome. So I present for your consideration: a revised review of the place that earned foursies initially and has been granted the illustrious upgrayedd to fivesies. One of the neat things about a place like this is that the people running the show, or running the show from behind the scenes - who knows - actually care about what they do and how they do it in the community. One of the dudes behind the counter recognized me from last time and even unprompted, remembered my order. That is cool. That has never happened at Americas! The seven habits of a highly delicious dinner place (revised from the initial review) -- 1. Diversity in dish choices. All that Jus' Mac does is win-win-win . It took me nearly three minutes for my mind and my stomach to duke it out and reach a consensus that they wanted the Popeye option this time, going for the green and healthy stuff this time around the block. As delicious as the Buffalo Chicken was last time, I had to feel good and righteous that I was going to see a vegetable this month. 2. Clever-curious-unique style. Jus' Mac hit that nail on the head converting a little old bungalow type of shanty house into a sleek, upscale looking trendy little restaurant in an immediately-industrial area that does not look like it caters to my kind of clientele. Yet inside you have pretty average whitecollarfolkpeople who look like they do bland whitecollarfolkpeople occupations like I do. 3. Bang for the buck: I solved the expense problem - drop the soda and feel virtuous you are drinking water instead of something fancy like a beer or Mexican coke. Also don't order the most expensive option (Buffalo Chicken or the BBQ Pit dish) and you really cannot feel bad about what you get for the money. I had so much food I could not finish it all. And it was good, solid, tasty food I could not make at home in my kitchen very easily (let's just round up and assume I could come "close" to preserve my ego) 4. Food quality. All that Jus' Mac does here is winwinwinwin. The mac, the spinach, the mushrooms, the other vegetablespiceherbwhatever things, the bread, and the tasty cheese coalesce into a tasty little slice of awesomeness. This was a good meal. 5. Drink order regulation: Mexican Coke (on family-friendly days) and beer selection at all other points. Jus' Mac has an epic win on both counts. Mexican Coke? Check. Nice beer selection? Check. And they give you a big boy cup for water instead of one of those obnoxious little cups the size of a drop of water as their implied "you should have ordered a soda" jab. 6. Limited hours of operation to make me feel like a true G that I googled/used the Yelp app to know when to come eat. I stepped into the place at 5:01 and there was no line, so I could stand and gawk at the menu for a few minutes. There was only one other table occupied in the small interior and nobody outside. Come in early for dinner and you get your pick of the litter on where you want to sit. Stretch out, bring a book to read, or knock out some e-mail from your iPhone - either way it is all good in the hood. Around 5:30 business starts to pick up and a line will have formed. Around 6:00 when I walked out it was rough seas to get a place to sit. So start a new trend of eatin' early and avoid the crowd, the earlier the better at this place. 7. Television. Jus' Mac: you did well fixing the problem from last time. I was watching the news while eating and reading. I certainly am the master of multitasking. And an additional cross-promotion: great music. I whipped out my smartphone, used the Shazam app, and found some new "my gym playlist" music. This is a certified legit dinner option in Houston - consider trying it. read more

An out of town friend was coming into Houston and wanted to grab dinner with me. I suggested trying out this new spot I had heard about called Jus' Mac. She asked what do they serve? I was like well just mac (and cheese), but specialty kinds. I had always thought this place was closer to washington heights as opposed to the real northern part of the heights. There's not much around and it's actually pretty hard to find this place and their private lot is small but they have a few places to park across the street. Once inside, it's a lot smaller than I expected also. Their menu is written on the wall. A normal order of mac ranges from about 7-10 bucks an item and appetizers are about 5 bucks. Our group tried both the mac and cheese eggrolls along with the macballs. Both were eh. Way over priced As far as the mac and cheese dishes, we had a chili and cheese mac, which was eh, the taco mac and cheese, which was also eh, I had the mac and cheese with brisket. It was good but that was the most expensive at 10 bucks. There was only a few pieces of brisket and a tiny squeeze of bbq sauce on top. Overall, this place is eh, as you can tell by the end of this review. They have some creative mac and cheese ideas but they aren't anything we haven't tried at home during college when you were too lazy to go to the store and threw whatever you had at home in a pot of mac and cheese. I have been here several times and I must say it is one of my favorite places to go right now. Although people have been saying it is overpriced, you can get an all-american for $6+tax. Additionally, all the variations that cause the price to go up is worth it. I'm teling you, if you haven't tried it, its worth trying. The taste is indescribable and extremely addicting. The portions are plenty for me. I typically share an order of mac and wedge salad with my bf and that's plenty for me. Things you must try: Buffalo Chicken Mac Wedge Salad WITH the Blue Cheese dressing (dressing is homeade) Bacon Bliss The Popeye The All-American My recent experience: On of the owners had come out and greeted me and my bf. She said was very cordial and remembered us from our last visit when we tried their pecan pie (which was delicious) and she allowed us to try the Peach Cobbler (also yummy). Through our conversation we found out she and her husband have been working on the concept for 7 years, the all-american is her grandmother's recipe and the variations are stemmed off of the original. Some of the desserts are homeade and also the ambience is great. The only stigma is seating, but take it to-go or just be patient, the food takes a bit to come out anyway. Showed up 18 minutes later and was told I had to wait in the regular ordering line for 20 minutes to pick it up. They need a separate process for those that call in pick up orders. Gave them another shot. Called in my order, showed up 20 minutes later. They never put my order in. I'm done with this place. Learn how to freaking run a business. Update: talked to the manager. Why 4 stars? Because they serve nothing but mac-n-freakin-cheese! --- --- --- Do I really even have to write this review? Their menu consists of 24 different kinds of mac-n-cheese. This is something I've long dreamed for in Tampa, but in Houston, it's a reality. If I lived in Houston, I would surely be a regular by now. For my one visit to-date, I enjoyed the Pit Master mac. I finally got to check this place out! Yay! It is what it is, mostly mac dishes (now with salads and some other stuff, probably because people were complaining on FB and maybe here when they opened, I know they developed a lot from feedback). It isn't like false advertising (Jus' Mac - so if you need more, Jus' plan on going somewhere else), and you're at a cute little place. So a mac dish for $7-8 a piece seemed expected, no shock there. The shock was the selection and the generous serving, and that actually, yeah you could get some other stuff too. They are pretty tasty and very generous in serving size. We got the traditional and the Frito Pie one (I think $7 a piece, which at that size and fillingness was fine, esp with the sourdough bread on top) and they were scrumptious. And you have to ask if I want bread crumb topping? Bring it! Mac is a balancing act when you get daring with the flavors, and a lot of times it gets to be just too rich or heavy. Somehow, they defied this. It might leave some disappointed, but I think it's how you can have mac as a meal and not just a sidedish. I just hope they'll let you buy trays at the holidays, I would love to bring these to Thanksgiving dinner! Their ceasar salad is great too, pretty elegant all laid out leaf by leaf just drizzled with dressing and a couple croutons. It made for a fun appetizer for kids not usually interested in salad. I am sure there is a fancy term for how they do it, but I am no chef. I don't cook, I eat. After we all ate (two moms, two kids on this adventure), we were just smiley. Our tummies were happy, we were full but not over stuffed. I can't wait to go again, I'm dying for the Popeye's with spinach and a couple of other flavors that seem like don't misses. Could you make this at home. Possibly. But it's a fun treat either way and I certainly don't feel like cooking. Plus, the leftovers were another meal in themselves (so I can't feel bad about $7 mac that lasts for two meals) I love the building too. The paint, the landscaping, everything is so cute. Very disappointed! It's always been an annual tradition to make the drive to Houston for my child's birthday at Jus Mac - we invite the family and friends to join us- it's a big deal every year for my child. After our experience today, even my child said "No more Jus Mac for my bday" sadly. We always order our favorite very diverse dishes at Jus Mac - from radical to traditional - the pepperoni, Quattro, popeye, and Tex-mexi but yet today was told they took them off the menu! The audacity! The best menu items are no longer being offered!? Why? Who would purposely remove such good dishes? Even the customer service was unfriendly. I got a very cold "I'm new here, don't know what you're talking about, never heard of it". It wasn't until I called the Midtown location did it sink in that Jus Mac actually ruined their restaurants by taking all the good items off the menu! Please please please put them back on the menu! The atmosphere was so empty and sad with blank walls, nothing is the same and we miss our beloved Jus Mac. Time to pick a new tradition to bring all our friends and family to now. We picked this location solely because of the outdoor eating area. We ordered 5-pc bone-in garlic parmesan wings, Buffalo Mac (1lb), Bacon Bliss Mac (1 lb), and 2 drinks for a total of $43. We grabbed our drinks and went outside. There was a group of four, none of them eating, but two of them smoking. I went inside to ask the cashier if they're allowed to smoke within 25 feet of the building and she says "yes, because they're outside and it's open". This is not accurate at all. The houston ordinance requires all smokers to be more than 25 feet from buildings. But, the cashier didn't care or seek understanding from others. So, I won't be back. There are plenty of restaurants in the area that offer smoke-free outdoor eating that adhere to the city's ordinance. And, the food tastes better because our meal was not worth the $43 spent. read more

Jus' Mac now reminds me of a McDonald's version of Jus' Mac with a it's new impersonal, fully automated, self-service, ordering system. I found the placement of the touch-screen monitors unnecessarily awkward. Additionally, touching a screen that someone else just touched makes me ask, "You there, the person that ordered before me, where have your fingers been all day?" This system also mean two other things: 1. NO NEED TO TIP! (You don't tip at McD's, do you?) 2. Leave your cash at home as it isn't allowed (and you don't need it for tips). Credit or debit cards only. Personal interaction with staff is now completely unnecessary, which is fine in the short term as the staff seemed distant and uninterested anyway. Oh, the food...I ate the Hangover and found it Jus' Okay. If somebody else picked this up and brought it to me, I wouldn't argue. The interior was clean, along with the touch monitors (I know, I know). Exterior: If the Heights restaurant owns or is responsible for the adjacent south driveway, please make the necessary repairs. It might be very hard on less hardy vehicles and was uncomfortable for my Das Auto, Helga. This last point is a friendly warning to future Jus' Mac customers to avoid the south driveway. Jus' Mac is Jus' Plain Good! I loved my first visit and I plan on visiting again soon! The menu is basic...just as the name of the joint implies. However, they recently added panini's, a Caesar salad, and a soup of the day. I went on a Sunday evening, which was very uncrowded. I ordered the Taco Mexi and the Popeyes, both of which came in a 6" cast iron skillet in almost no time at all. The offerings were delicious, and my wife and I both had enough to bring to work the next day. The restaurant is a bit small...but it gives it more of that down home feel than most places you would find in a strip mall. Stopped in today for lunch. Cold and rainy weather calls for comfort food. Girl at counter was abrupt (2 other customers in whole place). Placed my order for ponchovilla. When our food arrived my coworker got hers (same order) and I was presented with a "Popeye". Other than both meals starting with a "p", they sound nothing alike. When I pointed out the wrong food to the girl her reply was "well that's what I heard". I again told her it wasn't what I ordered. She grabbed the plate and within 5 mins was back with a ponchovilla. It's really 3 1/2 stars :) I've only been once so I can't really give it a super review. We split a bottle of wine, caesar salad and frito pie mac & cheese. The caesar salad was unique. It was 5 or 6 full size lettuces with croutons, cheese and caesar sauce laddled on. Quite interesting and easier to eat by hand. The frito pie mac and cheese tasted like a frito pie. They've taken a fun culinary approach to your average Mac and cheese. My favorite is the buffalo Mac. Filled with cheese, buffalo sauce, chicken and topped with breadcrumbs and blue cheese (I remove that and get ranch on the side!) The personal size is plenty for one, I sometimes have leftovers! I've heard many good things (and one not so good thing) about this place from my friends but I never had the time to give this place a shot just because it's kind of out of my way. But I finally decided to come here because I love Mac 'N' Cheese (even though I'm kind of lactose intolerant). The place is pretty small and if you're coming on Yale from 610 and it's your first time here, you really want to slow down because you could easily miss the entrance to the parking lot. If my friend hadn't been waiting for me outside to point out the entrance, I would have totally missed it. They don't have any big signs that tells you the restaurant is there and the parking entrance fits only one car in or out. Look for the car shop right across the street and you'll know you're there. Anyway, we got in and I quickly looked at the menu. It's surprising how you could make so many variations of Mac 'N' Cheese but I decided on the Cheese and Chong and my friend decided on the Buffalo Chicken. We both ordered the regular size vs. the personal size. According to the cashier, the personal size is 1/2 of cheesy goodness while the regular size is 1 whole lb of cheesy goodness. The cashier was nice enough to take our order with a smile on her face and we made small talks. The order came out quickly and whoa boy oh boy, it was gooooooooood. I loved it. The right amount of cheese, the right amount of chicken and the right amount of fullness after. The orders came out in a hot plate topped with a slice of white bread. I should have ordered some appetizers though because even with the regular size, I wasn't really full. So, if you're ever wondering if you should order the personal size or the regular size, ALWAYS go with the regular size. If you're planning on coming here during lunch time, good luck. I can see this place being really packed because it's tiny. The parking lot also has very limited space for parking. If it sounds like a lot of food, it's because it is. The only downside to mac & cheese is that as wonderful as the creamy cheesy goodness is....you really can only eat so much before you feel weighed down. Taco Mexi - really good flavor and I love TexMex so it was a good combination. It also comes with a few chips! The Broc - CHEESEY. If you want something "healthier" then this is the way to go. I mean it has vegetables.... All American - classic deliciousness. Can't really go wrong. Jalapeno - fresh or pickled? We got pickled. Spicy goodness. Spinato - Jus' panini. I really love the food here, I always have. They have a various assortment of Mac N cheese in various flavors and preparation styles. I especially love the new menu choices they've incorporated with the Latin influence. However, I found the cashier employee very rude to me. And JUST me personally. I came in and did not receive the warm welcome that the other customers received. I actually received nothing at all, except cold glances and scoffing. Shortly after I ordered (the ordering method is on a IPad for self serve style) - she pestered me about the fact that I didn't press TO GO on my order instead of FOR HERE... for about two minutes with a very passive aggressive attitude. So I had Jus Mac saved in my yelp for the longest without going, I finally went & was not disappointed!! I ordered my food online & showed up at the recommended time, my food was ready & was definitely fresh when it said it would be! I just couldn't wait to get home so I took a couple bites & it was absolutely amazing! I ordered the chicken Parmesan mac. It was so cheesy and flavorful, I should've ordered a little more marinara but that was my fault for being too lazy to go back inside. The chicken was well cooked, and the cheese was so gooey which is exactly how I prefer it!! The portion for me was plenty, for someone with a bigger appetite it may be a bit small. The food is not too bad if you can tolerate the HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE experience. You drive into a parking lot that is an obstacle course of potholes that feels like you are going to damage your car. I was charged twice for the same order and when I let them know they refused to refund the money for the second order and told me they had made a second order of food and to come pick it up. I am a huge mac n cheese fan, so when I head about this place, I was determined to make the trek out there for this specialty restaurant. I invited two friends along. We arrived right before the dinner rush, and I ordered the large buffalo chicken mac and the bacon and mac balls. The buffalo chicken was around eleven dollars after tax!!! The bacon and mac balls rounded out to being about a dollar per ball. Come on here, we're talking about noodles and processed cheese! What's with the inflated prices? The food came out, and the large wasn't very large at all for what I paid, which was disappointing. Granted, the food was so rich, that eating a large by yourself will put you in a food coma. The chicken was just Sysco chicken... flavorless precooked pieces, nothing exciting. The buffalo sauce and the mac n cheese was a nice combination of flavors of spicy and rich cheesiness. I ended up sharing mine with one of my friends who ordered a regular size and was still hungry after wards. Now, the bacon and mac cheese balls were delicious and super rich as well, and with that plus my entree, it was a cheese overdose. My stomach actually felt a little rebellious from my dousing it in so much gooey richness. Here's the kicker. Funny thing is, I was still hungry! But the food in front of me was so heavy, that it started becoming unappetizing, and I had trouble finishing it off. Out of my company, one of my friends barely touched her "Hangover" mac n cheese. My other friend ate his and didn't have any complaints. While we were sitting and eating, the place got packed, and the small dining room filled quickly, forcing many to take their orders to go. Yum! Since the BP MS 150 was canceled on the first day, I decided to go on the hunt for some good food. I came here with a group of 4 around 3pm on a Friday and we were the only people in there. I ordered the steak mac and it came out in about 5 mins nice and hot with fresh bread crumbs on top. The meal tasted great and was pretty filling. I will say that the portions are pretty small, especially when they put the cast iron pan on a large wooden plate that makes it look extremely tiny. But lets just say, one personal portion was all I need, even though I could have went through 2 or 3 more. The lady that took our order was incredibly kind and answered any questions we had. Yikes! I'm glad I won't have to contribute another one star review! This restaurant could not have come at a better time. After being severely disappointed in my last search for mac and cheese, I really needed a place to satisfy my cravings. When I saw on yelp that a place just opened and only serves mac & cheese, I'm pretty sure my mind exploded. My friend and I went today around 11:30. We noticed that the small parking lot was almost full. The restaurant is pretty small but really gives off a nice cozy feeling. When you enter you'll notice a menu with varieties of mac & cheese to satisfy anyone's tastes. I went for the bacon bliss, while my friend went for the taco mexi. I wanted to try the fried mac balls but unfortunately they ran out. Just saying the words "fried mac balls" is making me hungry again..... The bacon bliss was very good. I really loved the gooeyness of the mac &cheese; the bread crumb topping definitely didn't hurt either. My only complaint is that there wasn't as much bacon as I had hoped. The title "bacon bliss" gave me the impression that this mac & cheese was going to have lots of bacon. However, even with the little bacon the mac & cheese was still amazing. I cannot comment on my friend's taco-mexi but we didn't talk much during our meal. I usually consider that a good thing when at a restaurant. While my whole experience was great, I still think there are some things that this place can work on. One thing is definitely the parking, which I know everyone mentions. The next thing is having items available. Usually when I hear that something is unavailable is because it was sold out the day of and not the day before. I really do hope this place becomes very successful; I love the idea and the food. If you really want to try this place make sure you come early! read more

Nice little place, it is a small setting, you order at the one register and wait at one of the tall tables or they also have a patio. Parking is kid of limited so you might have to park on one of the side streets. Service is good and they will cook your meal from scratch. 3.5 stars. Let me start off with parking at this place. You gotta go in really slowly and carefully or else you'll end up scraping your bumper. The ground is pretty rough and filled with gravel too so beware, low ricer cars. Now on to the restaurant itself. The place was a lot more dim than I thought it would be. My friends and I came in about 30 minutes before closing and the guy at the counter didn't really seem to happy to see us come in. Didn't really greet us or anything. Just took our order and our money, gave us a number, and moved on to the next customer. We felt sort of out of place in there too with some of the customers staring us down when we walked in.. Anyway, the food itself was excellent. The mac&cheese come in either a personal size or regular size. And you get to choose whether or not you want bread crumbs on it too! I ordered the Chik Chik (which had chicken and basil in it) personal size w/ bread crumbs on it and I swear it was the best macaroni and cheese I'll ever have in my life. The macaroni wasn't mushy; the cheese wasn't too creamy and didn't overwhelm any of the other ingredients in the dish. The chicken and basil added a lot of great flavor and the bread crumbs added more texture to the mac&cheese too! Each dish of mac&cheese comes with a slice of bread as well. It blew my mind away. I tried a little bit of my other friends' dishes like the Popeye (mostly consists of spinach), Rustic (has some veggies like tomatoes), Hammie (ham), Chili Cheese (pretty self explanatory; also comes w/ fritos on top), and Buffalo Chicken (chicken w/ buffalo sauce and blue cheese on top). They were all pretty good, but I liked mine the best ;] The fried mac balls were good too! Get it with bacon if you can. They're great without the sauces, especially the white one, which I think was ranch-- it was very stiff and didn't look very fresh or edible at all. .___. This isn't a place I would come back to all the time, considering it's a huge majority of carbs in your diet and the service and location doesn't really make anything better. But if I'm in the mood for mac&cheese and my diet allows me to, this will be the first place in mind. read more

Jus' Mac is one of those places that has the perfect ambiance, the coolest concept and a really unique menu. But the food ? It can just be disappointing sometimes. I love to stop there for a snack, but if I am actually hungry it just leaves too much to be desired. I will say, if you are there and like a lot of garlic flavor try the Popeye. The buffalo chicken was too tangy, and the Mexican inspired dish is overwhelmed by the taste ground beef. I wish I had a better review for this place, because I really think it's cool. Maybe I don't love macaroni enough? Maybe? If I was judging food separately, I'd give it a two stars. But given the cool experience, I bumped it up a star. read more

Don't know what happened to this place. We hadn't been in a very long time. Today we picked up a late lunch and we didn't enjoy much of it. Disappointing for sure because we loved the Mac here last time we tried it. I don't know, today's classic Mac was really off tasting, not even edible. We also got Buffalo wings and a burger. We got the Armadillo and Popeyes macs and they were both so different in ingredients and flavors, that it made our experience very enjoyable. The menu has a good variety so that no two are similar enough. The Armadillo had a nice mild spicy kick, whereas the Popeyes was smooth and creamy. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu! So I love Mac N Cheese and wanted to try this place. Very disappointed at the environment. Reminded me of a fast food chain restaurant. The options to me were a bit over priced. You can get 1/2 a lb or a full lb anywhere from like 8.50 to I think 16$. It's just mac n cheese tho. I ordered the truffle Mac n cheese 1/2 lb. 11$.
