    Surf and Turf
    Chris C.

OUTSTANDING! Friendly service on an order of a Surf and Turf, California and Bean Burritos. Excellent, well seasoned carne asada, tortillas wrapped by an expert with no breakage or spillage. The Surf and Turf is massive like others have stated and it is PACKED with flavor. No one likes a $15 burrito, but when it is two meals, call it a great value. All were very good with an excellent, spicy red salsa. DO NOT MISS!

Everything about this place is just plain old decent. I've gotten meals here twice and it's just fine. Last time I got a beef burrito and a potato taco. The burrito just wasn't very flavorful. The potato taco was actually delicious and the best thing I've gotten here. It had a light but airy crunchy shell, which I thought was going to be the same shell used for the crispy shell carne asada and carnitas tacos I got today. It wasn't. Instead the shells were thick and seemed store bought. The meat is just decent - not super flavorful, and not anything I'm beyond excited to get again. The salsas are meh - the red is too spicy for me, and the green is (surprise!) just..... not that flavorful!!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside is pretty chaotic - the menu is on the wall, but also covering the walls are dozens of random new hand written menu additions. All around it's just sort of confusing and overwhelming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The prices are also a bit more than I expected. My partner and I got the exact same order - 2 crispy shell tacos with rice and beans each, which came out to $30. The perks are it's in a very convenient location for me with an easy free parking lot so I will probably come back, but maybe for the breakfast burritos and crispy potato tacos only.

I remember going to JV's Mexican as a kid with my family because of the huge portion sizes. So when I was craving Mexican food recently, I knew exactly where I wanted to go. Now that I'm older, my taste has shifted from California burritos to lengua tacos and menudo, but we still ordered a California burrito for nostalgia. The shop is located in a small plaza with limited parking. We went around 9 pm and had to find street parking since the lot was full. Even though it was busy, the line moved quickly. Inside, there's plenty of seating and a salsa bar in the center with a variety of salsas, carrots, and jalapeños. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The menu is extensive, with regular items and specials posted all around the restaurant, giving it that classic local spot feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Lengua Tacos The lengua tacos come in a three pack and are generously filled with meat. They're topped with cilantro and onion, and the lengua is tender and flavorful. For the price and portion size, it's a great value compared to most taco spots. Menudo I ordered the red menudo, which comes with rice and your choice of tortillas. It had a very authentic, homemade flavor and a large portion with plenty of tripe. The broth wasn't as deep red as I expected, but it was still delicious! California Burrito We ordered the California burrito for nostalgia, and it's just as massive as I remember. It's filled with carne asada, fries, guacamole, and sour cream. It's heavier and richer than what I normally order now, but it still has that classic comforting flavor. Service Service was fast and efficient. Even with a long line, ordering was smooth and we waited about 10 minutes for our food. There was a small mix up where I was rung up for pozole instead of menudo, but they fixed it quickly and were friendly about it. Everything came out fresh and together, and the staff stayed accommodating even during the rush. JV's still lives up to what I remember. The portions are huge, prices are affordable, and the quality is consistent. It's a comforting local spot that's worth coming back to

Super salad 1/2 chicken & 1/2 carne asada. No Crema on mine and I never use the dressing. Doesn't need it.

I have been going here for over 20 years. It is our fave local Mexican food spot. This is typically a five star for us. The staff is very friendly. Owners and managers have been there as long as I have been stopping in. It is close to USD, so I used to come here on my way to my evening grad school classes after work. My favorite dish is a Super Salad 1/2 Carnitas and 1/2 Carne Asada. Tonight someone else was working the register. We did our usual order. My salad arrived with 1/2 chicken and 1/2 carne asada. I went to the front counter and the gentleman said I'm sorry I can't do that. Maybe my manager can but I can't. He went into the kitchen and brought me a container of Carnitas. I appreciate the effort. Carnitas are so good, but my salad was ruined for my personal craving. Before leaving I went back to the register and thanked him for the carnitas. He again apologized saying he can't make that change. I said maybe next time please let the person ordering know that you can't. That would have given me an opportunity to fix the order or change it. Other longtime favorites here are the California Burrito (#1 in my son's book$ and a carne asada quesadilla. If this was my first time here I would have given 3 stars but I know this is a 5 star spot for my family. In over 20 years this is the first time I haven't been 100% happy.

Wanted to try a new location so I came here. Amazing customer service. Ordered a steak quesadilla which was really good.

I found a caper in my burrito and it tasted like curry
    Zack W.

Ordered the surf n turf burrito. Huge burrito. Decent value considering how much shrimp and asada they put inside. Piping hot. Unfortunately the shrimp didn't seem fresh. Probably frozen before. The asada barely had any flavor. They put a weird combination of peppers and onions with hints of curry inside; It tasted off. I found a shredded carrot, corn, and even some pickled peas or capers. First time I disliked a burrito so much that I ended up throwing it out. Really confused considering how many recommendations I got for this place and all the good reviews. Maybe they messed up the burrito or I went on an off day. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside was clean[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], the guy taking my order was super awkward and didn't know how to look at anyone or speak. All the workers seemed pissed. I don't know. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Weird vibes and even weirder burrito. Won't be going back.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Hi San Diego peeps! I was out visiting. We stopped here on the way home to eat. I ordered the surf and turf burrito. It was humongous! Holy poop ... like an old school burrito! I took a Pic and put a quarter on it so you can visualize how hefty it was. The service was great also. It's been a LONG time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My only complaint was for a sit down meal the place could have been cleaner and the water dispenser 100% needs to be updated or bleached, scrubbed, and then burned.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But when you're thirsty? Ehhh... it will do. I loved the green salsa! Thanks all

    Lengua Tacos

Delicious family owned Mexican restaurant in the heart of Morena Blvd/USD area! They have anything you could think of a Mexican restaurant serving- absolutely huge menu. I got the lengua tacos and the lengua was so good- super tender! The only con is the parking lot, it is super tiny shared with a few other businesses. Overall, I would come back here if I was in the area for fresh delicious Mexican food.

    Inside where you order.

I love everything about JV's. I used to come here all the time when I went to undergrad at USD, so of course I had to stop in for a visit when I was in SD again. And to this day, they impress me. Talk about bang for your buck! I ordered the surf and turf burrito which was only $14 and the size of a small child. I kid you not, that thing had to be 3 pounds at least! I cut it in half to share, and each half looked like the size of a normal burrito... I'm not exaggerating. It still has great flavors. San Diego burritos have a specific flavor profile, and JV's' burrito hits it spot on. Tons of meat inside, great guacamole, great salsas. My friend ordered the Sonora quesadilla which has grilled chicken with Ortega peppers, bacon, guacamole and jack cheese. Again, it was a really big portion and she said it tasted great as well. This is a family owned restaurant, and the love of this family shows in the food. Truly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a casual restaurant, you can get food to go or eat in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And they get your food to you very quickly. They know what they're doing because they've been doing it right for so long. I was so happy they're still in business and I'll make another trip back soon!

Tapas style menu, we were a party of 4 and ordered: Squash blossom Relleno - it's the flower part of a squash plant and stuffed with mushroom duxelles which resembles a meat mixture with squash succotash. Outside is a corn tempura with a tomato base sauce. Pulpo-grilled octopus, one of the best texture and perfectly grilled skin with a chewy yet soft interior. The sauce has a slight kick and crunch from the corn nuts. Crab corn doughnut- this is their specialty and we were about to skip out but glad we didn't. The brioche bun had a donut batter with lumps of crab salad and corn mixture on top. El Festin- perfect for our party of 4 because it was a platter full of 4 Cheese quesadilla, 4 shrimp, 4 chicken slices, 1 jalapeño bacon wrap, ribeye. Flan-we should have each ordered one ourselves! Great flavors and texture, the top had ancient chocolate soil and had crispy corn nuts. Different but yummy. Overall, delicious food that came out so quick, great ambiance, we celebrated our birthdays and were each gifted candles with our names on the label. Truly amazing from beginning to end. You need to go at least once. A good place to bring peeps from out of town as well if the budget provides. Reservations are recommended. My only real gripes are the parking (not really their fault), the prices being a bit high and the noisy and dim atmosphere, but the other perks make up for a lot of this. Also, be careful of the candles, one dripped on my date and messed up her dress.

We grabbed a table for our whole crew, kids included, and settled in for what turned out to be a really memorable evening. Now, no meal is perfect, and ours had a funny little hiccup. We ordered the shrimp salad, and it showed up... shrimp-less. Just a salad. We laughed about it because hey, things happen, but what really made the night was how it got handled. Our server Erika noticed something was off before we even said much, and she jumped right on it. Not only did she get the dish fixed and out to us fast, she also surprised the kids with free dessert, no fuss, no attitude, just genuine hospitality. That's the kind of service that turns a small mistake into a story you actually want to tell. The rest of the meal was great too. Fresh flavors, a menu that leans into that coastal Mexican-meets-California vibe, and a setting that makes everything taste a little better. Sunset hit while we were there and the whole patio just glowed. It's one of those spots where you're paying for the experience as much as the food, and honestly, both delivered.

Decided to finally mix things up this time, and it did not disappoint! It's definitely an upscale Mexican spot, but the main draw right off the bat is the location. We got hooked up with a waterfront table, and the views of downtown SD and the Coronado Bridge are unreal. Here's what we ordered: Queso Fundido: Started with this and it was delicious. Famous Fajitas (Shrimp & Steak): Hands down the highlight. The meat was super well-seasoned and the charred veggies added so much flavor. Tampiqueña: Really solid and flavorful. Note on the chips: The chips here are a little different than what you usually get at a typical neighborhood Mexican joint--a bit thicker/different texture--but still tasty! All in all, everything was fabulous. If you're stuck in a routine of only going to C Level, definitely give Coasterra a try! We're super glad we finally did.
