I've come here several times now since I work nearby. I have yet to be disappointed. Their burritos are amazing, especially with their Chipotle sauce. I've been adding it to every order I've now. My mom had the chance to try their tacos on Taco Tuesday and she said she loved them. The people who work here are so pleasant and you can tell the community adores them. The most recent event the support was a beautiful thing to see. The agua fresca de pepino was sooo refreshing that even a coworker of mine decided to take the rest. This is my go-to spot for a burrito that hits my craving. I typically ask for a burrito with just carne asada, avocado and Chipotle sauce. The other burrito that is bomb is the Breakfast burrito with ham, beans and cheese. Also, the crunchy Chipotle burrito. I'll have to expand the things I've tried but like I said yummmyyy!! read more

Driving home from Comic-con Sunday afternoon, my wife suggested we stop at JV's on the road home. I can't believe it's been so long since my last visit. Now that my son doesn't attend school in San Diego, we don't drive out this way much anymore. My wife ordered a chile relleno, cheese enchilada combo plate which puzzled me because she asked what the name of the place with good takeout Mexican food seafood was. She enjoyed it but regretted not getting something with fish or shrimp. I went with the Del Mar which is so big, it could pass for a creature from the Odyssey film. The burrito was as large as both of my fists placed side by side. It would easily feed 2 moderately hungry people. I do recommend that you eat it all or share it because it's just not as good after being refrigerated and consumed the next day. Some food tastes just as good warmed up the next day but this is not one of them. The parking lot is smallish and shared by 4? other shops so finding a spot can be challenging during peak hours. Everything about this place is just plain old decent. I've gotten meals here twice and it's just fine. Last time I got a beef burrito and a potato taco. The burrito just wasn't very flavorful. The potato taco was actually delicious and the best thing I've gotten here. It had a light but airy crunchy shell, which I thought was going to be the same shell used for the crispy shell carne asada and carnitas tacos I got today. It wasn't. Instead the shells were thick and seemed store bought. The meat is just decent - not super flavorful, and not anything I'm beyond excited to get again. The salsas are meh - the red is too spicy for me, and the green is (surprise!) just..... not that flavorful!!! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The inside is pretty chaotic - the menu is on the wall, but also covering the walls are dozens of random new hand written menu additions. The broth wasn't as deep red as I expected, but it was still delicious! California Burrito We ordered the California burrito for nostalgia, and it's just as massive as I remember. It's filled with carne asada, fries, guacamole, and sour cream. It's heavier and richer than what I normally order now, but it still has that classic comforting flavor. Service Service was fast and efficient. Even with a long line, ordering was smooth and we waited about 10 minutes for our food. There was a small mix up where I was rung up for pozole instead of menudo, but they fixed it quickly and were friendly about it. I have been going here for over 20 years. It is our fave local Mexican food spot. This is typically a five star for us. The staff is very friendly. Owners and managers have been there as long as I have been stopping in. It is close to USD, so I used to come here on my way to my evening grad school classes after work. My favorite dish is a Super Salad 1/2 Carnitas and 1/2 Carne Asada. Tonight someone else was working the register. We did our usual order. My salad arrived with 1/2 chicken and 1/2 carne asada. I went to the front counter and the gentleman said I'm sorry I can't do that. Maybe my manager can but I can't. He went into the kitchen and brought me a container of Carnitas. I appreciate the effort. Carnitas are so good, but my salad was ruined for my personal craving. Before leaving I went back to the register and thanked him for the carnitas. He again apologized saying he can't make that change. I said maybe next time please let the person ordering know that you can't. That would have given me an opportunity to fix the order or change it. Other longtime favorites here are the California Burrito (#1 in my son's book$ and a carne asada quesadilla. Ordered the surf n turf burrito. Huge burrito. Decent value considering how much shrimp and asada they put inside. Piping hot. Unfortunately the shrimp didn't seem fresh. Probably frozen before. The asada barely had any flavor. They put a weird combination of peppers and onions with hints of curry inside; It tasted off. I found a shredded carrot, corn, and even some pickled peas or capers. First time I disliked a burrito so much that I ended up throwing it out. Really confused considering how many recommendations I got for this place and all the good reviews. I took a Pic and put a quarter on it so you can visualize how hefty it was. The service was great also. It's been a LONG time. I love everything about JV's. I used to come here all the time when I went to undergrad at USD, so of course I had to stop in for a visit when I was in SD again. And to this day, they impress me. Talk about bang for your buck! I ordered the surf and turf burrito which was only $14 and the size of a small child. I kid you not, that thing had to be 3 pounds at least! I cut it in half to share, and each half looked like the size of a normal burrito... I'm not exaggerating. It still has great flavors. San Diego burritos have a specific flavor profile, and JV's' burrito hits it spot on. Tons of meat inside, great guacamole, great salsas. My friend ordered the Sonora quesadilla which has grilled chicken with Ortega peppers, bacon, guacamole and jack cheese. Again, it was a really big portion and she said it tasted great as well. This is a family owned restaurant, and the love of this family shows in the food. Truly. This is one of the better Mexican joints in the SD area for burritos. JV's Mexican Food (the marquee sign says JV's Taco Shop) is located in a corner suite of a tiny plaza of businesses in the Linda Vista neighborhood. Lately, the area has been congested because of construction on Morena Blvd. The parking lot is not very large either so be forewarned. I really like the late closing time of 11 pm on Wednesday to Sunday which is great for the night owls. Menu boards/sheets were posted in at least three different areas... behind the service counter, on a wall to the left of the counter, and on a pillar in between the two dining rooms which could hold about 50 customers combined. For a small kitchen, there was a plethora of offerings. One area I noticed was the price of the standard, one protein burritos which ranged between $9.45 and $11.20. For the portion size, the cost was a very good deal. Some of the bougie Mexican restaurants in town charge over $20 for their burritos which is wack. On the board of Super Specials was a list of about a dozen special burritos. I picked the Del Mar version which was made up of shrimp and fish with beans, lettuce, guacamole, cheese, and homemade tartar sauce. The length of this behemoth was close to a foot long. A worker brought a plate to my table along with squeeze bottles of red and green salsa. I cut the burrito in half to examine the ingredients stuffed inside. The fish was fried pieces while the shrimp was grilled. I consumed about half of the product before taking the rest home as leftovers. The flavors were sufficient that I didn't even apply either of the salsas. For my latest visit to JV's Mexican Food, the experience was more than four stars but not quite up to the highest level because of the ambiance. For variety and value though, this place is about as good as it gets for a non-chain Mexican spot. read more

Disappointing experience today. We've been coming to JV's for years because my mother-in-law loves it for quick Mexican food, and it's usually been a good experience, until today. The woman at the register was extremely snappy and impatient with us. When we asked for a fork, she responded with a nasty tone toward my mother-in-law. When I asked for a knife, I got an annoyed look like I was asking for a favor instead of basic utensils. What really left a bad taste was watching her immediately switch to being cheerful and friendly as soon as male customers stepped up. The contrast was obvious and uncomfortable. If the food is just "fine," then customer service really matters. And today it completely missed the mark. Customer service like this ruins the experience. Service is fast and very friendly. Looks like a lot of locals and repeat customers. I loved my carne torta. Just the right proportions of beans, to greens, to meat to bread. Bean and cheese burrito: surprisingly, this one ended up being the more massive burrito in terms of size. It is h e f t y. Lovely refried beans, melted cheese, and tortilla wrapped neatly and securely. An impressive feat and at a modest price. Breakfast Burrito Grande: slightly smaller than the bean and cheese. The items inside lacked texture in my opinion. The potatoes were mushy with 0 crisp, and the bacon also lacked crisp. The ingredients are overall pretty dry and bland, so you definitely need some salsa on this one. Mostly came here for the breakfast burrito, so I was disappointed in the result. Burritos are a decent size and prices seem fine. Both burritos needed more guac and the meat wasn't great quality-- dry and salty. Bread is old, rice is extremely salty, fish for fish tacos are store bought. As you can see in the menu options a place that has this many op tions is not able to produce fresh meals !! Also make sure you check your orders. I asked for separate fries and they added it to my son's plate when it was actually for my husband's. A legit lil whole in the wall(respectfully).. Stopped by after a long day at Sea World. You can see the Tacos ain't no joke! Babies are pretty big. Yes, it's a disappointment to see them naked, but my child insist on plain plain plain! He really enjoyed them and was full! The food taste pretty good, and they were not stingy with the Guac!
