5 STARS!!! Well-seasoned but in addition to being tasty, it was beautifully moist, not overcooked the way many restaurants serve it.
    Ruth K.

Somebody sent us to this restaurant with instruction that we had to absolutely asked for the "chicken roll". Well, we never got to that. The ground beef seasoned kabob was extraordinary in that it was not overcooked, but instead tasted great and was super juicy. We tried the hummus sampler which is three styles and the standard one was really good, but the other two were just a little bit too spicy for our tastes. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs as we hadn't eaten all day and we were so hungry that the ordering got away from us LOL. The baklava is freshly made every two days, but there's no photo because Mr. Picky ate it when my head was turned. It's all halal which sets my mind at rest. It's a bit of a drive to get there from here but next time we go I'll run through all the individual dishes. In the meantime, I can definitely recommend the place.

This is a casual restraunt where you order at the counter. I ordered chicken biryani rice. It came with chicken on the bone. It was good! I also tried my partners chicken tikka masala. It was also good! Both dishes seemed authentic. They had a good amount of spice in them, but it wasn't overbearing. We ordered some Naan bread for the table, and it was some of the best around.

12/31/19 I found this place thanks to yelp Great reviews and photos had me come here. Well that and my love of Mediterranean food. I ordered a mixed grill meal, which came with various meats, on a bed of rice and a few select veggies. Salad came along with it, and I ordered garlic naan. This is the type of restaurant that you order before you sit so the food is hot and delicious. I was well taken cared of here by the staff and enjoyed all my food thoroughly. I had so much, it made it lunch for me on the next day.

Omg! Glad I gave this place a try, everything was amazing. The best gyro I have had in years and I have eaten a lot of gyros. The pita was melt in your mouth and so was the meat. The gyro meat had so much flavor and was so moist and the tzatziki sauce was so creamy and delicious. I was even surprised how much I liked the Naan, it is just bread. But it was soft and seasoned well I couldn't stop eating it. I also got a baklava to try and that was perfectly executed. The phyllo was flaky and it wasn't overly sweet like some baklava. Will definitely return when I am in the area. Might even just drive out as a destination.

We ordered the Chicken Kabab plate and butter chicken. The veggies were burnt. The chicken in the plate was too dry and the salad was not fresh at all. The butter chicken was not too bad thus the 2 stars.

This place is a casual restaurant where you order at the register and they bring it to your table. The service was very kind and patient with all of their customers. We ordered the chicken seekh kabob wrap (not pictured), chicken shawarma platter with hummus and tabouleh and onion naan. My favorite was the seekh kabob it was so flavorful and juicy! I would come back just for that. I'm not sure we would get the shawarma again, the flavor was good but it was just a tad bit dry :/ and the hummus wasn't the best we've had. But we definitely want to come back to try more items.

This is a great local business with a good lunch special and great serving of food for the price. I will say the shawarma can be rather greasy, but seasoned well

    CHICKEN SEEKH KABOB PLATTER

First time trying Mediterranean food and it was pretty good. I ordered the chicken seekh kabobs, rice, a side of garlic naam bread with spicy hummus and the baqlawa alamode. The chicken and rice was pretty good but my personal favorite was the regular naam bread with the spicy hummus. The garlic naam had a little to much garlic for me. But the baqlawa was a great way to finish my meal. Just wish it was a little bit more fresh. It was quiet, clean and the cashier was nice and helpful. I still want to go back and try one of the wraps.

All dinners come with a Greek garlic bread starter. I love their iced tea- fresh brewed and always good! The wine is Greek and seems a small bit pricey, but for the extra dollar or two it's worth it- Very delicious. Anything you get at Athena's is amazing so feel free to branch out on your choice. And the desserts are large and homemade! It's hard to save room though. You'll love the fish, steaks, and kebabs. They do a nice lunch sandwich- and still comes with the bread and a Greek salad. Started to enjoy this first each time I come. It is that delicious, but why can't I find fruit like that anywhere at a grocery store? Give this place a try. Yummy. Officially the authentic Greek restaurant without going overboard. Wait- the homemade 3 layer chocolate cake and the lemon cake! Actually bought a whole one for a large birthday party and everyone wanted to know the bakery name- just Athena's homemade cake! Remember, Greek food is fresh with best ingredients. When the entree arrived I thought the lamb shank looked small. Taste wise it was good but I have had better. Also the potatoes were as advertised however their appearance and taste to me was average. If I ordered this meal again I would order another side dish perhaps the rice. This meal was a 3.5. Another visit was for dinner was to try the Kokkinisto entree for $21. Again this meal comes with the same enjoyable side salad with bread and I chose the Briami as the supplied side dish. The Kokkinisto (Greek beef stew) arrived on a bed of rice and covered in its herbed tomato sauce with garlic and onions. The Briami was in a separate bowl of stewed veggies in a light tomato sauce. I liked this meal better. The stew had good flavor with tender beef and a tasty red sauce. Also the veggies were good tasting too. I gave this meal a 4. Finally the waitress was very friendly. I believe her name was Jennifer? I like this restaurant and believe they serve good tasting and authentic Greek food.

Established back in 1977, this Greek café has grown from a humble walk‑up window into a full‑fledged neighborhood institution, beloved for its hearty Mediterranean comfort food and lively, come‑as‑you‑are atmosphere. The Montrose location stays bustling from lunch through late night, drawing in everyone from families to night‑owls to longtime regulars who've been coming here for decades. What keeps people returning is simple: the food hits. Diners consistently praise the authentic Greek flavors, especially the gyro plates -- a blend of beef and lamb shaved from the spit, tucked into warm, fresh pita, and finished with cool, garlicky tzatziki. Portions are generous without being sloppy, and the pricing stays reasonable, making it one of the best value spots in the neighborhood. Your gyro arrives stacked, your fries come hot, and your plate feels like it was built by someone who actually wants you to leave full. The menu is huge, but the classics shine brightest. The Greek salad is crisp and refreshing, loaded with feta, olives, tomatoes, and their famous dressing. Service here is fast, friendly, and efficient -- the kind of counter‑style operation where the staff keeps things moving without losing the warmth that makes the place feel welcoming. Guests frequently mention how upbeat and helpful the team is, even during rush hours. The vibe is lively but never chaotic: families grabbing dinner, couples sharing mezze plates, and regulars chatting with staff like old friends. It's casual, energetic, and unmistakably Montrose. One thing that sets Niko Niko's apart is its deep Houston history. The Fetokakis family has run the restaurant for nearly half a century, maintaining a strong work ethic and a commitment to quality that helped the café earn multiple Houston Press awards over the years -- from Best Pork Chops to Best Family‑Owned Restaurant. Even as the city has changed around it, Niko Niko's has stayed true to its roots: hearty food, Greek hospitality, and a community‑driven spirit. Whether you're grabbing a quick gyro, sitting down for a full spread, or stopping by for dessert after a night out, Niko Niko's delivers exactly what a neighborhood staple should: great food, great value, and a welcoming atmosphere. The flavors are bold, the portions are generous, and the experience feels like Houston -- diverse, warm, and full of character. If you're in Montrose and craving Greek comfort done right, this spot remains one of the city's most reliable pleasures.
