I took a bite out of the chicken and it was raw still. My wife's chicken was also raw! 2 for 2 in a bad way! Asked for replacement and felt like they didn't want to do that and I was inconvenience as there was about 50 other orders they had to push out. This is one of the few places in the area with Pakistani food and it is very good, very large portions... however, when we got there the tables were dirty and there were flies around our tables which is to be expected in the summer months but there seemed to be no effort to mitigate them. Based on the numerous reviews for this restaurant, my Family & I decided to try this restaurant on a cold, rainy evening. Perhaps, the quality and warmth of the food would be a better ending for the day. Unfortunately, what we encountered was horrible service, an over priced menu for what we received, inattentive servers behind the counter, and ultimately, did not receive the food we had asked for! I always passed by this place for years and finally got around to trying it after a shopping trip nearby. Parking was a little difficult, but I found something out back. I've been to KP many many years ago. And have since gone to other places to try other things. After numerous recommendations to go back, I decided to pick it up one night on the way back to my hotel. I ordered the lamb chops meal and beef kabob, entree only. Overall I arrived at midnight and didn't walk out until 12:45am. Crazy. They move SLOWWW and it wasn't even a full house. But that being said, people don't come here for the atmosphere. So finally got the hotel and started crushing - everything was as delicious as I remember it many moons ago. It was amazingly filling and everything was seasoned perfectly and cooked perfectly. Not overly cooked! Located in the food row in Crystal City it is just off route 1 but thousands of miles from where this very delicious food originated. The beef kabob was tender and flavorful as it was cooked over wood. They make the nana bread fresh every day and it is warm and soft yet crispy. I had the rice pudding and it had pistachios in it and that hit the spot. Read the reviews and had to try this place for our less than 24-hour stay in Crystal City. The line and ordering process was a bit confusing. I'm not sure whether the person who took our order didn't understand English that well or just didn't want to understand. I got the boneless chicken plate that comes with one skewer, rice, salad, another side, and bread. We also wanted one lamb skewer with a salad but instead got the lamb plate. We both picked eggplant as the side vegetable which also included chunks of potato. The food exceeded our expectations. The meat, rice, and eggplant/potatoes were delicious. Order food for pickup and they did not even have proper boxes to pack it in! They put the naan bread between 2 plates, put the gravy on top of the rice and grilled chicken and were not cooperative at all. Instead of finding a solution to this, they raised their prices and were very rude. When talked to the manager (khan) about this, he stated that it was not his problem and transferred us to another person (Mukash). Mukash went on to apologize about his managers actions and promised a refund the next day. Once we called them, they refused a refund and said that the person had left on emergency leave and stated that they had other customers to take care at the time instead of giving us proper service. On my trip to Dc I enjoyed a sit in at Kabob Place. Foodwise: We ordered the their chicken and beef kabobs with tandoori naans and rice. Let me tell you the Kabobs were good! the marination was just amazing and the naans were so good as they were making them on the scene. The meal also came with choole (chickpeas) apparently that is an "in" thing with a kabob meal in DC as we don't get that in Canada; we got choole at other places with kabobs as well. Our server friendly and prompt. The food took some time but everything was hot and freshly served. Overall, I enjoyed the entire food experience! There are many menu options in this place, but I opted for the lamb curry. The lamb curry was EXCELLENT, and the chick peas & rice were a perfect compliment to the main dish. The huge piece of flatbread was excellent for sopping up the flavorful sauces that come with your entree. And did I mention the portion sizes were HUGE? I was full and had over half of my meal leftover for lunch the next day. Needless to say the food was even better on day 2. The chick peas(cooked to perfection) and rice alone would make us want to stop by every time we're in the area. Ever come across a review with so many variables that it made your mind spin? There's a lot to consider when trying to come up with an objective review about this popular place so here goes.... I've been in the DMV (for non-locals that stands for the DC, Southern MD and Northern VA areas) for some years now. One of my biggest struggles has been dealing with the nursing home hours that many restaurants in this area keep. Being from upstate New York, I'm used to places staying open either 24-7 or till the wee hours of the morning so getting a chicken finger sub at 3 am was the norm back in the day. Moving out here, I found myself left with the intimidating 5 star choices of IHOP, Ben's Chili Bowl, The Diner, McDonald's, Wendy's, etc. anytime after 10-12 (depending on the day and the area). Enter Kabob Palace. This place specializes in lamb, chicken, beef and kubideh (minced meat or poultry that is seasoned and rolled into a sausage shape) kabobs that are prepared Afghan-style and served along with salad, rice and a small variety of side options such as spinach, potatoes and chick peas. The meats are cooked to order and are seasoned perfectly along with the smokey flavor of the grill. The chick peas and spinach are particularly tasty, especially the chick peas, which have a nice kick to them. The condiment provided is a cucumber yogurt sauce (sooo good) and the meal also comes with a huge piece of naan (flatbread) that is light, fluffy and delicious. There are also other items on the menu worth looking into such as their vegetable samosa, which is basically a fried turnover filled with veggies and spices. YUM! I suppose you can say you're getting ethnic fast food here because orders are done and out in 10-20 minutes depending on the line. While there are some seating options, they are very limited so most people go the take out route. Clientele is very diverse and you will notice a lot of cab drivers patronizing this establishment. I've had A LOT of ethnic food in my life so when other reviewers mention that the food here is not the best they've ever had, I think that's fair. The side options can be a little oily and occasionally the meat can be a little overdone. The older guy behind the service counter can be gruff although the younger guys there are friendly and helpful. All that being said, I would most definitely consider this place to be A LOT better than most South Asian/Persian places in this area, especially considering their ability to season their food properly and offer huge portion sizes. Also, since it's open 24 hours, I'm giving out extra stars like it's halloween candy. Parking can be found on the street as well as the CVS parking lot that is just a few doors down. Prices depend on what you get but generally speaking I think it's slightly cheaper than most similar places ($10-$15 per person). What better place to start than with Kabob Palace, one of the "founding fathers" of the declaration of deliciousness that liberated local palates allowing Middle Eastern cuisine to make its mark with several others to follow in the region. 1)Ethnic focus- owners are Afghan, but there is also some influence from neighboring Pakistan with various options of curries and lassis. If you order takeout, the styrofoam boxes are plastered with an American Flag/American pride logo which is either oddly cheesy or sadly a vehement attempt to deny that their storefront has anything to do with terrorist activities. Would be curious if there was any blow back to business in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 2) Kabobs- flavorful and succulent, the chicken outshines the lamb and sirloin cuts and the latter options also tend to get tougher when reheated 3) Side dishes- Both the aromatic chickpeas and velvety spinach/potato options serves as a perfect compliment to both the carbs and proteins with just the right touch of spice and an appreciated "soupiness" to bind the other ingredients together. After a shared Metro ride home together, the rest as they say, is history. If not for that fateful meal at Kabob Palace, I may have gone home and still be a bachelor today. Kabob Palace has always been the platinum standard for kabobs for me. Say what you will about Kabob King in NY, Shalimar in the Bay Area, or any other joints around. Kabob Palace delivers great food, at a great price, and twenty-four hours a day. I am a big fan of their lamb chops, chapli kabob and also their boneless chicken. The kabobs are flavorful and juicy, never bland or dry. What really adds to the experience are the chick peas, spinach, rice, and naan. The side dishes are all really rich and tasty, and the naan is always hot and fresh. The service leaves a lot to be desired, but I will keep coming back regardless of the long waits. If your Friday or Saturday night ends at Kabob Palace, then your evening will definitely conclude solidly.
