8/27/26 Haven't been here in years nor have I had Okazuya food in quite some time But "Wow!" Was surprised at how expensive w prices having gone way up 2 Tamago Rolled Eggs n 2 pcs Fried Halibut... $17.00 Pieces were fair sized n tasted good though On a hopeful note Okazuya business must be good cause they are renovating the dine in restaurant What happened to this place? Say "Good Bye to the Good Ole Days" When Locals get overcharged everyone will lose money

Kabuki Restaurant and Delicatessen was established in HI in 1961 by Katsumi and Haruko Kazama in the Waimalu Shopping Plaza in Aiea, together with a handful of small businesses, with a vision where local people could gather, shop, and fulfill all their daily needs in one location. The popular, old-school Japanese eatery was known for its traditional Japanese dishes, fresh sushi, and extensive okazuya (deli) selection, which consistently drew long lines. It served breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After many successful years, the Covid pandemic slowed business down, and the owners were ready to retire but couldn't find anyone to take over the business. The main dine-in restaurant closed on 1/31/24, while the okazuya side remained opened. An electrical contractor by trade, John Afong, teamed up with Randall Hayashi to take over the okazuya side in Oct. 2019, and still operates today. This Yelp review is for the Kabuki okazuya (take-out Japanese comfort food). The long-standing Japanese delicatessen known for the popular okazuya & fresh sushi with a busy morning window for breakfast and lunch items, e.g., chow fun, cone sushi, fried chicken, and more. Note that items are not traditional Japanese okazuya, but more about what will sell based on value or price point, what is considered "old-school" local charm, and take-out food that can be packed for easy transport. After the closure of the dine-in restaurant, the okazuya take-out line was improved to protect it from the natural elements and became more efficient by having two lines when ordering at the counter. A checklist was placed so customers could write down items to be ordered and hand this list to the staff for fast-ordering. Bentos are still available until 11a. Some of our recent okazuya purchases are: * Maki sushi. Pieces are large with generous flavorful fillings, but they are square, so a mold is used, which is surprising. * Potato tempura. Doughy batter with generous piece of sweet potato. Put it in the air fryer, and the batter will be crispy. * Chow fun. Somewhat seasoned, a little mushy, and lacking with the add-ins. Doctored it by adding in spam, cabbage, kamaboko at home. * Long rice. Lacking in taste and add-ins. Doctored it up by adding in spam, cabbage, kamaboko at home. The long rice soured quickly. As with the chow fun, love that each was wrapped in a light brown paper for portion control and that they don't overflow onto the next item. * Corned beef hash patties. Crisp on the outside, but ratio of potatoes far exceeds the corned beef. The okazuya items sold at the Kabuki Restaurant were always favorites for us, especially during the pre-Covid times. We live on the east side, and we were aware of its popularity with those who lived nearby, as there were always long lines whenever we went. Granted there was an ownership change in 2019 and with the after-effects of the pandemic, things are no longer the same. Recent visits to Kabuki revealed that while the portion sizes of the okazuya items are still generous, they have lessened in inventory and are not as flavorful as they used to be. Their quality is not as good as before. What happened? I'm assuming new cooks with the management change? In its hey days, there were always long lines for the okazuya. Not any more, as there haven't been any lines so that we could just walk right through and order. Local folks are very nostalgic, as they remember how good things used to be and by continuing to patronize the business, hoping that their loyalty will allow the business to be there, instead of having memories. As there are no lines, the two staff ladies are eager to take your order, and they are quick and efficientin assisting you without any waiting time. Good time to ask questions about the okazuya. Hours of operation are daily from 5:30a to 1p. Cash only. Free parking available in the complex shopping center that is shared with other businesses. There are other okazuyas that offer great comfort food that also should be considered, especially in seeking taste, value, and options. These will be memories one day......support local!

    Now for $3.50

All the okazuya prices have gone up since new ownership and the 2 ladies that have been there forever are no longer there. The cone sushi price went from $2.40 to $3.50 and the size shrank a lot. I used to buy the cone sushi for my mom all the time, but I don't think I'll be going there to buy it anymore. Definitely not worth $3.50.

Today for breakfast I ordered from Kabuki One hamburger, shrimp tempura? Hash and cone sushi . Service is always friendly and there were no long lines . Support local

    Good

Mmmmm so ono. And the service, so friendly and fast. So many choices and everything was good. My favorites: shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura, long rice, sushi (both rolled and cone), and the gobo is perfect. Check 'em out!

Gohan(rice), fish soup, tempura sauce is presented before the meal arrives.

9-15-25 Picking up lunch for hub's aunty who became 90 today. Luckily when I arrived there was no line outside the door. So many things that looked good but the plate could only hold: Monday's special meatballs Cone sushi Nishime Shoyu chicken Egg They carefully put the meatballs in a little cup, wrapped the nishime separate from the other items. I could hear a man n the other line saying hot dog, hash, etc. Those sounded good. I also ordered 3 rolls of maki sushi: one for aunty, 1 for a friend and one for our own lunch. My friend emailed asking where the sushi was from cuz her husband said it was the biggest he ever saw and that it was delicious. I wish I could show you Aunty's plate before the lady packaged it in a plastic bag cuz it was heavy. I hope she liked it. Strictly business, no pleasantries or smiles. You stand inside the doorway and wait to go in either the right or left line cafeteria style- you look, say what you want then pay, cash only. Nothing fancy as the main dining room is dark and closed off. Typical okazuya place you order and go. Not an eat in place.

My husband & I are suckers for okazuya's. We always passed by this place and we finally decided to give it a try. When we first arrived they had a line (always a sign that it'll be good). They also provided paper menus and pencils so you could figure out your order while waiting. We handed over our paper order to the cashier and she started on our plate. They were quick and packed everything really well so it wouldn't leak onto each other. They have a lot of options from maki sushi, fried chicken, gobo, adobo, etc. We tried a little bit of everything. The fried chicken was super crispy & fresh which I liked. It was also cooked all the way through. Some places don't cook their chicken all the way through. The gobo was spicy for some reason but to be fair, it was my first time eating it. My husband likes gobo and he said it was spicy also, or packed a bit of heat. I seen that a lot of people got the adobo, so being a Filipino, I had to try for myself. It was really tender pieces pork that were falling apart. But had a strong vinegar taste. I personally liked it. The Friday special was stir fry eggplant so I also got that. It was Chinese eggplant cooked in a brown sauce w/ pieces of meat. Price wise, it was typical pricing for okazuya in Oahu. Nothing compared to the okazuya's in Hilo but definitely satisfied our cravings. We will be back to try again :) thank

Anytime I go eat okazuya, I can't but help to think about my Yelp buddy- Bruddah Dan O., as he is da KING of okazuya! Bruddah Dan is da man for okazuya, as he's been to a lot of okazuya joints (including Kabuki), and has generously shared with me some of his recommendations/favorite okazuya joints. On my recent okazuya adventures, da Kabuki Restaurant was targeted, as I was enticed by a marinaded frrrrrried chicken that my Yelp buddy - Donna O. had posted on Yelp not too long ago. Where is the Kabuki Restaurant??? If ya know where the Waimalu Shopping Center is, you can find the Kabuki restaurant among the various eateries at this shopping complex in Aiea. Upon walking into the restaurant, both ladies working the okazuya counter was already helping some folks, but after waiting behind a lady, it was my turn. I proceeded to order da following items- 1. Frrrrrrried Chicken ($3.50 per piece), I got two. Unfortunately for me, I didn't see that Marinated Frrrrrried Chicken that by Yelp buddy - Donna O. had talked about. 2. Shoyu Chicken ($3.50 per piece). 3. Cone Sushi ($2.40). 4. Shrimp Tempura ($2.50). 5. Potato Tempura ($2.25). 6. Egg Omelet ($1.40). What can I say about the grub?? If you like old skool comfort food, Kabuki Okazuya clearly meets the old skool joints. Nothing fancy about the food. I found some items better than others. I LOVED the Shoyu Chicken, but the Fried Chicken appeared over cooked & hard. I really dug the Cone Sushi, and of course the tempura items were to die for! Like many okazuya joints on Oahu, I have a few favorites, but my ultimate all time FAVORITE okazuya joints is actually on da Big Island (Hilo to be exact!). If you're ever in the Aiea neighborhood, Kabuki Okazuya really meets the old skool comfort food joints! Chance 'em!

Kabuki Restaurant our favorite Japanese food restaurant. Now only serving Okazuya 7 days a week. Catering is available especially great for the Holidays. We were feeding a bunch of folks with a bunch of different tastes. Pretty much ordered everything on the menu. All were delicious . The ladies at the counter were awesome. . The cooks were on point, everything was prepared perfectly and so Delicious . When we brought it home everything quickly disappeared.

Food was terrible. Way too salty. Waitress kept messing up our orders, but we just ate what she brought and will never go back.

Everything looked appealing and appetizing to the eye, but we were met with disappointment on multiple dishes. With Da Bite, you get a flight of three smaller portions of entrees: 1) the waygu loco moco meat was overcooked and the gravy was just salty; 2) crab benedict was more breading than crab so once you bit in, it was quite mealy underneath the initial crunch. The lack of crab could easily go unnoticed when smothered in sauce. 3) Ube pancakes with ube marscapone... the marscapone was delicious, but the pancakes lacked fluff and moisture. The kids pancakes also had the similar spongey dry texture and my nephew chose to only eat half the portion. We also had the Longsilog, which is a sweet sausage, but it was overly sweet for my taste. All in all, the food was just all right for the hype. Maybe we would've enjoyed it better if we hadn't already experienced better versions of similar menu items that set the bar earlier on the trip.

I can see why this is a BTS favorite. And that Yobo Toast, oh my goodness, I am living for their version of a French toast with a lovely pear compote on it. The burrito was packed with lots of meats and cheese, though I think a spicier, tangier kimchi and/or gochujang aioli may have given it a little more rounded out flavor for me. As for the waffle bap, I personally am not a fan of crispy rice, but I appreciate this concept as the flavors were there. The owners were welcoming, accommodating and made us feel like home. I would say that Forty Niner is a great place to get the bang for your buck in terms of pricing for their food, but I will say that the quality of the food isn't as great as it's presented on their ordering site, Beluga. Today, my husband and I chose to do takeout and ordered three things: The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Chorizo Hash, and the Molokai Loco Moco. For the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, the lemon taste was pretty concentrated in the middle of the pancake/not well distributed and we couldn't really taste the ricotta flavor, but it was pleasantly sweet (not too sweet). For the Chorizo Hash, I was a little bit sad that it wasn't very flavorful and the Chorizo wasn't well cooked. The Molokai Loco Moco's flavor receives the same review as the Chorizo Hash; although it was special/the first time we'd had Loco Moco like that, it was pretty soggy/watery and lacked flavor. The food itself in my opinion gets a 3.5/5, but because they were timely and friendly as a staff, I'm bumping our review up to a 4! It was empty when we got there, it was when it just opened at 9. The menu looked incredible and the ambience was really nice, very quaint farm-chic wood everywhere warm vibes. We got the Crepe Forestiere, Banana Crepes, Wagyu Burger, Açaí Bowl, hot chocolate, and the espresso martini. First, the Crepe Forestiere was sooo delicious. The crepe was crunchy underneath a healthy amount of arugula, over easy egg with perfectly runny yolk, and Gruyère cheese. It was so good and well-balanced flavor and texture-wise AND you don't feel guilty eating it. The Wagyu Burger came with mixed reviews. My 3yo and I loved it. Hubby was not a huge fan. The key thing is that it is super blue-cheesy, which I absolutely loved (my new obsession is blue cheese on burgers...I can't resist!). However, if you're not a blue cheese person like my hubby, I would skip it. The banana crepes were so well made, with the crepes crunchy on the edges hut nice and soft in the middle. They used dark chocolate which paired perfectly well with the sweet bananas, whipped cream, and powdered sugar. Simple enough but elevated and my 9yo essentially finished a whole plate (with 2 crepes) by herself! The Açaí bowl was from Blue Hawaii, which you can't really ever go wrong with. We added some coconut shreds which made it perfect. The hot chocolates were not on the menu but they were so good. It tasted like they used actual drinking chocolate based on the flavor and the texture, and not Hershey's or a packaged variety. My daughter said it was the best hot chocolate she's ever had, and she's had quite a bit. It reminded me of the hot chocolate my grandpa used to make us in the Philippines from these hard chocolate balls called tablea that you had to use a batirol (traditional hand-turned wooden whisk) to dissolve and froth the chocolate. It had a nice slightly gritty texture in a positive way. Anyway, it was quite nostalgic and hubby and I agreed with her that it was definitely a phenomenal hot chocolate. The espresso martini was pure coffee, which is good, and it was smooth, although I like mine to have an almost creamy texture, like nitro coffee. Needless to say, I drank the whole thing. A special bonus were the potato Mille Feuille that came with the fries and their signature Farmhouse "ketchup" and I put it in quotation marks because it was more of a demi glacé, with a very thin texture and it did not taste anything like ketchup. It was really good though and was perfect for dipping the potatoes and the burger in. The service was also great. They were nice and attentive and always came over with a smile. And they made the hot chocolate for us off-menu. Needless to say, I think we've found our new favorite brunch spot without having to trek all the way to Kailua. Really happy we came and looking forward to going back. P. S. By the time we left about an hour and a half later, the place was completely packed and busy, so I guess a pro tip would be to try and get there early.

We checked in before 9:00 am; four Yelp friends helped me out. Aiea Pancake House was formerly called Koa Pancake House, and it pretty much serves the same food. I have been dining there since before the name change. Good portion sizes, local favorites, at an affordable price. You order at the front, and they call out your number. There are several tables inside, and it's nicely air-conditioned. There are also tables outside. That day I ordered the Strawberry Waffles. It was topped with strawberries and whipped cream. It was a Belgian waffle, fluffy on the inside and nicely crisp on the outside. I also ordered a side of Portuguese sausage and pineapple juice. Everything was great! The staff was nice. They checked on us and thanked us for our business. Free parking! There are so many great businesses at Aiea Shopping Center, so it can get pretty busy during peak hours. At least there are three parking levels. Thank you, Auntie Nadine, for getting everyone together, and mahalo to fellow Yelp Elite friends for the help: Auntie Nadine C., Irene C., Debroah P., and Gabriel P.

The Breakfast Club…read more.. It's always fun meeting up with Yelp friends and today was no different as visiting local Kim needed her Breakfast Club badge is enough of a reason to have some yummy breakfast. Located on the second floor of Aiea Shopping Center right beside McDonald's there are two entrances and do like this casual type of dining as you place your order and pay first to then seat yourself and they bring out your order. I decided on their namesake of Aiea Omelette and why not it's filled with Spinach, Mushrooms, Portuguese Sausage and Cheese...yum! My side is potatoes of course as they're a nice rustic chunky cut cooked up perfectly and as most of the condiments are at each table no need to ask for them in advance was nice as well. During these busy days it was really nice to stop and take the time to have some breakfast with friends and this breakfast club group is amazingly generous with their time and thoughtfulness...Nadine, Deborah, Gabriel and Kim ;) cool group. Thank you!
