I've been going to Kabuki restaurant for as long as I can remember. Seeing how this is my dad's favorite Japanese restaurant, it's definitely not avoidable. But who avoids good food???!!! Crazy people I would say and well I borderline that aspect but not on the food front ha ha. This would be a five star review but I docked it for the mere fact that it's a typical teppanyaki restaurant where you go in smelling like good perfume and come out smelling like a grill. Kind of uck especially if you have to keep sniffing your clothes all the way home. But the other four stars? Good service + deliciously made food! Japanese restaurants don't normally run cheap and well they follow suit just as well since fresh fish is a pricely commodity. But my go-to meal are the teishokus. They include tempura, choice of meat or entree, salad and your choice of sashimi or oden. The sashimi is usually a good amount and the tempura is tasty and just enough. The entree portion which I usually get Teri beef is just the right amount to go with the rest of the items. My father's favorite is the nama chirashi and compared to any where else they have the BEST assortment of fresh fish. Hands down. Haven't been here in decades for dinner, except for lunch on a couple occasions. Went to dinner the other night and found it to have a great local atmosphere, and very tasty food. They were also crowded but, fortunately we had reservations! Received excellent service. I really liked the steamed mullet - on special that night. One of my good friends likes Kabuki because she went there a lot as a kid. The employees are really cute, but the food is just ok. Nothing special. Also, my husband said the restroom was gross, which never makes me feel good about eating someplace. The restaurant itself vaguely smelled like an old bathroom. Yuck. As for food, I wasn't super hungry so we split some agedashi tofu (with yamaimo, not my favorite!) and I ordered some futomaki. I know, not too adventurous! But I wasn't in the mood for a huge meal and I didn't trust any raw fish there. Just call it a gut feeling. I really wanted miso butterfish, but just couldn't handle a teishoku. Ordered chow fun today along with a few other items. The chow fun was different. Plain. Only a couple shedded carrots, onion and bits of pork? Taste was bland. Not like it used to be. Also had the vegetable tempura. Only white onions and a tiny carrot. Used to have green beans. I'd rather pay a bit more for what it used to taste like than to pay same with less taste. My co-worker used to buy okazuya from this place and share with us.. I liked the cone sushi and the shoyu chix is tolerable but i couldnt get over the hamburger patty!! it was so mushy!! and my grandparents used to say "if the hamburger is too mushy they added too much bread"... now.. either way they didnt cook it long enough or yes, they did indeed add too much bread to make the hamburger meat stretch.. anyway,thing made me sick.. so i shall pass on this place.. read more

I finally got to taste their okazuya. The lady who packed my food was very neat. I ordered butterfish, nishime, gobo, and hash. She packed butterfish and nishime separately. I came here cause I had a date set with a friend of mine that got cancelled, and I was waiting for another friend instead to finish up her work. I didn't mind because I had my guitar and my phone so in between songs I would just go through random texts. After she got out early than she initially told me because I was already waiting, we drove off planning to go to some place by pearl harbor. Unfortunately there was tons of traffic and I had forgotten when they closed... so after much debate about where to go, we finally decided to go to Kabuki since we remembered a friend that worked there that told us about it. This is the second time I've been here, but last time I went for lunch with my friend. When we got seated, we had a nice Japanese lady greeting and serving us in Japanese. It was kinda fun actually, reminded me a little of being in Japan except you don't have young, young adults who're probably in college shouting "irashaimasse~!" at you as you walk in like 3 times in a row, and instead you get a kind and quiet lady asking for your order. Okay, so its not always like that in every restaurant in Japan, but hey, I've only been there once, so I can't say too much. My friend was craving some butterfish, and that's what I had last time so I told her to go ahead and get some since I really liked it. When it came, she was surprised at how big it was, and even said its worth the extra cost, because she usually gets it at gyotaku and she said its only about more than a 1/4 of the size. I wanted to try something else, so I got the tonkatsu with tempura and sashimi. I actually don't eat a lot of raw meats, but this sashimi was pretty good! I ate all of it, which I didn't expect to do because there was a lot... Least to say, we were pretty much stuffed. Its good we came around 5:30 because the place started filling up super fast with what seemed like regulars! We left and the restaurant was pretty full, but yeah, it was a Friday night, so made a lot of sense. Tepanyaki and NABE!!!: We are SO coming back for that!!! read more

My family has been going to Kabuki for years. We've celebrated many milestones here(graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, Vegas winnings(lol), etc. We just finished eating dinner here tonight to celebrate my moms birthday and the food as usual was delicious. We love the food and service here. It's a great little hole in the wall spot. It looks like they may have renovated it a little or changed the carpet...not sure. It always looked a little worn down and they were in a need of a facelift. However it never stopped us from going, because we love the food here. This place only gets TWO stars because of the service of the hostess. Sorry folks. The food is awesome in the restaurant. Don't care much for the deli part of it. I think because it just sits out there and the freshness is no longer there? I highly recommend the restaurant but don't be alarmed when the hostess (older asian lady) is not friendly. It is normal. I have been there a countless number of times and I think I saw her "friendly" once. But I love their TEISHOKUS! The waitresses are pretty good considering there are only two working at a time! Hands down Best sushi bar thus far!!! Alex and Masa are amazing sushi chefs! I love eating at the sushi bar. Staff is very friendly and service is terrific. Fish is fresh and taste better here than any other sushi bar or restaurant I've ever been to! Even Japan couldn't touch this place in my opinion. I treated my friends from Japan to this place and even they agreed that the sushi here was better than the best they had in Japan. Soft shell crab like no other! Hamachi so creamy and the Salmon cured perfectly! Very traditional sushi and sashimi here. This restaurant has been around for so long and since Futabas closed I don't know another place to go to that has my fried scallops. I came here for lunch with my mom and dad and I ordered the $15 combo of fried scallops and butterfish. It was really good. Although the scallops weren't as bug as Futabas it was still good. So good! So fresh! One of the best sushi places I ever been to. Reservations are a must cause they get very busy.

I came here bc my friend raved about it. I should have known better bc his taste in sushi has been questionable before and he doesn't know Japanese food. We were greeted with a good smell. Place was huge but a bit dirty and run down. Order: $24 8 pieces sashimi, big thing of rice and a small ( typical miso soup size) weird soup with egg in it. ( already unhappy bc the waitress said the order came with 11 pieces) fish wasn't fresh. ( and it was on the weekend) $11- tempura udon. Ok soup. But only came with 4 small tempura pieces. Our friends ordered teriyaki chicken plate and a katsu chicken plate. I forget how much each was but it was in the price range of 15 each. Niether friend finished thier food and neither are picky and both hate wasting food. All together our bill was almost 80 dollars. We left hungry and unhappy. The service was also not great. Tekka maki was on the menu but I was told they didn't make it when I ordered a roll. I am a sushi fan. Love the raw stuff. No mayo or Cali rolls for me. I've had sushi all over mostly in California. Not a bad venue, really. It's old style, playing enka-ish music, with old dark wood, without a lot of varnish. I had a soft-shell crab based te-maki with Nabeyaki. Very tasty stuff. The Nabe didn't skimp on materials, with a dizzying array of seafood, seaweed, and tofu within. The noodles were a translucent bean noodle, as opposed to Udon. Not bad. I spent more of my time in conversation, so wasn't really able to drink in the ambiance and really concentrate on the food... still it was pretty satisfying. Sorry to say but the bento at Kabuki in Waimalu was just horrible. I'd rather pay the few extra dollars at Zippy's a they make a decent bento. The fried chicken from Kabuki was so dry and the bbq beef was tough like leather. I am known to complain about food as I am sort of picky but no one liked the bento. When kids waste their food because it is junk that is pretty pathetic. I think that they might be so busy that they don't really care about the quality of food that they put out. I first came here as an elementary schooler with my Japanese grandparents. Grandma would always get the teri chicken teishoku and so would I. Since then my taste in food has changed a bit and my grandma and grandpa no longer accompany me to kabuki but the two things that haven't changed are the sweet as hell hostess lady and the amazingness that is the soft shell crab roll. The soft shell crab roll is deep fried soft shell crab, chopped up and mixed with a small amount of mayo? Spicy mayo? And tobiko rolled up temaki style and stuffed with sprouts and cucumber . Basically it is what dreams are made of. Although the roll is deserving of five stars in itself, the place has old school local Japanese charm that is hard to find anymore. The place is an institution: the sushi chefs (masa!) have been there for years and the sushi is fresh and delicious. I hope this restaurant is open and thriving for many years to come. read more

A longtime business at the Waimalu Shopping center is Kabuki Restaurant. In the mornings you'll find a line of hungry workers ordering the okazu to make bentos for work or parents ordering for their kids school field trip. We had dinner here this past week and I was surprised that the place still looks the same after all these years. The restaurant is actually bigger then it appears from the outside. The food was good and prices reasonable for Japanese food. Our waitress was an older Japanese lady that provided good service. The sashimi was fresh and the oden and tonkatsu was good. Went for dinner. Ordered soba soup and unagi dishes. Unagi was OK. Soba was beyond soggy -- sent it back. Was not charged for it. Service was mediocre but they're helpful if you ask a lot of questions. I'd say the worst part of this experience was trying to understand the menu and options you have for ordering. Overall, not worth the prices, though. More recently, A coworker purchased bentou boxes for lunch and brought them in. Can't say I was impressed, but maybe it was his selection: A battered and deep-fried Okinawan sweet potato on top of rice (c'mon, really?), along with battered and deep-fried chicken, half a hot dog, and some very chewy beef teriyaki. A heart-clogging body-fattening experience to say the least. But, I'm not surprised Hawaii locals consider this a bentou box. It's what Zippy's would server, afterall.* * Seriously, if you knew what a real bentou box should be, you'd never eat a local one again. I suggest you visit Shirokiya's food court at Ala Moana shopping center sometime and buy a real bentou box there -- with seafoods, meats, vegetables, several (small) servings of differently prepared rice mixtures, and not a slice of SPAM to be seen. Anyway, I wouldn't make the effort to return to this place when there's several other Japanese restaurants in the area to serve your cravings, namely Tadashi's, Ichiriki, Kuru Kuru, and Curry House. read more

Ok, if I went to the Okazuya I would definitely give it at least 4 stars but I went into the restaraunt because it's been awhile since i went in there and wanted to try it out. Overall, everything was just average for me, I've been to better places were the food, service, prices were better. Ah! This place warmly reminds me of my childhood. For every Birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Graduation, Kabuki was the place to go for delicious and reasonable Japanese Food. While the restaurant is a little outdated, the friendly service and food quality has not diminished. The Combination Teishokus are definitely the best deals. The portions are generous, and all combinations come with Tempura and a choice of Oden or Sashimi. I personally love the Tonkatsu, Beef Teriyaki, Misoyaki Butterfish, and Fried Scallops. The portions are generous and are a bargain at $20. If you're a carb lover, you will also be happy to know that meals come with a big pot of rice that is refillable. As for the sushi, the fish portions are fresh and huge! Many people also love the Okazuya Food, but I never get up early enough to enjoy it haha As for the service, the waitresses are warm and friendly. Many of them have been working there for many years. In fact, almost all of the waitresses have known me since I was a little kid, and they have watched me grow up over the years.
