Love, love, love this Filipino place! It's a hidden gem in Plano that serves authentic Filipino food. We ordered the pork and beef combo, milkfish, spring rolls, pork vermicelli, and halo-halo -- and everything was delicious! The vermicelli was perfectly stir-fried and well-seasoned, and the halo-halo had all the traditional toppings -- creamy, flavorful, and so satisfying. Everything tasted homemade, which made the meal even better. The food did take a little while to come out, but it was definitely worth the wait. We've been coming to Kainan for years and it's always been our favorite Filipino restaurant for the value and the flavors. The old couple that used to be there were always so friendly and helpful when ordering. They sold the restaurant last year to a younger couple who modernized the restaurant while keeping some of the same flavors. However, we were surprised to see new ownership on our most recent visit. We decided to give it a shot and had a pretty disappointing experience. We came at 5:30pm and pretty much all the food was sold out already. We usually get pork adobo, beef caldereta, chayote, lumpia Shanghai, and pinakbet but they either were sold out or didn't offer any of it. More than half the items they had were sold out which is pretty bad. How does a Filipino restaurant run out of pork adobo! With that said we still ordered food hoping for the best but it wasn't up to previous standards. The tocino only had a few pieces of meat and the garlic rice was very mushy with no garlic flavor at all. The lechon kawali seemed fresh but the fried skin had a mushy texture. Pork sinigang wasn't bad but seemed to be missing some depth to the soup. They wouldn't let us order the sinigang as an entree combo item, which we've always done, so we had to order a whole big bowl of it. The guy explaining things also didn't have the best attitude and seemed flustered while prepping the rice and food to send out. Food took a long time to come out as well. Plus, they have this weird air freshener blowing some strong incense smell that was pretty overpowering. Just overall disappointed with the changes and overall vibe of the restaurant and probably won't come back for the unforeseeable future. read more

Yummy Filipino food here! The problem is there are too many delicious choices so if you're like me with indecision... don't worry the owners will help you. We settled on 2 dishes + rice for each of us. I got the adobo chicken + beef and potato. The hubs got adobo pork + mixed veggie dish with bitter melon/ string beans/ eggplant. You get a jumbo scoop of rice (YES!). Wow wow wow it's so delicious, you can drizzle the sauce on your rice... yummm. I also got the tiny ube steamed rice cakes. Perfect ending to a delicious lunch. It's been seven years since my last time at this Filipino restaurant, as well as I am extremely happy to say that everything I had was delicious and well-seasoned. It is truly pleasing when a restaurant steadily maintains its quality over many years even with a a change of ownership. I consumed the entire Beef Kare-Kare and the whole Kaldereta for this meal. Kaldereta was savory, tasty, and creamy, making it the ultimate comfort food. The Beef Kare-Kare possessed intense flavor where it could stand on its own, even without bagoong (shrimp paste) They don't have the usual bagoong for this dish due to the ban (eye roll), they only have alamang (another version of shrimp paste) to offer. Another thing that was a pleasant surprise was the larger range of Filipino desserts. Many customary favorites, like halo-halo and leche flan, and countless other sweet treats have been greatly improved. It is a fine way to conclude a large meal. Visiting again after all these years makes me completely glad. For anybody who haven't been back like me, this is your chance to visit them again. I have been coming to and ordering from this place for years and always trusted them, but the recent ownership changes really show. I placed a big catering order for pick up weeks in advance for Christmas Eve pickup at 3 p.m. because I was throwing a 6 p.m. dinner party and I thought that was ample time. When I arrived, nothing was ready and there were lots of people just standing around waiting on their orders. No one could tell me when my orders would actually be done, which was incredibly stressful with a party clock ticking. I finally got my order right before 6, rushed home, and guests were already arriving as we walked in the door. When I left, there were still people waiting on their orders. The previous owners handled large orders so much better and I honestly miss them. The food might still be fine for a casual night, but I would not recommend this place for catering or any time sensitive big orders. read more

I miss the times when this place was run by an older couple. Food was consistently newly cooked and hot, delicious and was also price fairly. It was my to go to spot for Filipino cuisine. Now under a new management, flavors are good, but the food was cold when served. The oil on the pork adobo was almost congealing not long after we started eating. The new offerings of silog tasted good, however was served with plain rice instead of fried rice (their menu said fried rice). I know the new management is still trying to figure things out, but I feel like some things like food being cold when you get it is not acceptable. I might try it again after a couple of more months to see if it improves, but would probably steer away from it for the meantime. read more

3.5* Nice owners - it is a hole in the wall in the Plano area. It is cafeteria style when you order, and the food options change, and are on a rotation, so there's not a set menu to choose from! You get your own water and bus your own tray when you are done. I had high hopes because of the reviews, and unfortunately, the food fell a bit short. Ordered the specials - 2 meat and 1 veggie and 1 meat and 2 veggie option specials from the menu. The meat was tasty, but felt super oily when I ate it, as there was a layer of oil for all the meats that were ordered. The mixed vegetables was my favorite, but the jackfruit vegetable option was my least favorite, and I would recommend not ordering it. The flavor was lacking for the jackfruit dish and the texture consistency was super off putting to eat. I would be willing to go back to try other items on the menu because the owners were really kind, but would probably order their drinks, so I did see a big family group come in and order drinks for everyone and leave. read more

They are very friendly and nice. Portion is generous. I can't seem to be able to finish my meal. Desserts on weekend are wonderful. They make different dishes daily depending on what ingredients mami found at the market. Lechon kawali and lumpia worth the wait. This little mom and pop shop, like many Filipino eateries here, has a bunch of premade dishes. You can order various meat or vegetable dishes and you're charged by how many (cafeteria style). You can also order special items off a menu. They also have lumpia and sisig (which is available on request). The place is quite spacious and can fit quite a few people inside. The food is very tasty. The one knock is their lumpia. It really should be fried to order. It was way too salty and not at all crunchy. This is one of the very few places serving halo halo in the DFW area. I've never had halo halo before and it was awesome. I would describe it as a crunchy, icy cereal with sweet red beans, jelly and fruity things, topped with ube ice cream. It was unlike anything else I've ever tasted and all the textures and variety of flavors really popped in my mouth. The owners are very sweet and they will spend time explaining the food if you've never had Filipino food before. I came for the halo halo and I'll be coming back for the food, too. read more

This mom and pop small restaurant reminds me of home. Im glad it did not go big box like Inihaw did when they added grocery items, here it seems they are just content with being a restaurant and thats great. There are some hidden items not on the menu posted above their store so if you are filipino they might have what you need. We tried the Lumpia at 65 cents a piece. Its crispy on the outside, soft in the inside. The adobo had the best amount of sourness to not overpower the pork. The pancit had some chicken and vegetables in it and had more ingredianrs than just pancit, which I like. Operators were friendly too. Ill certainly be back! read more

Tried calling about ordering some lechon ahead of time for the day after, the lady interrupted me, said "WE DONT HAVE ANY MORE TODAY" and hung up on me before I could say it was for the following day. So I ordered a few things here to try. I tried the Dinuguan and a spoonful of it took me right to my childhood and I almost cried mama! Then I tried the kare kare and it's just as good as I would eat it in the Philippines. They even took the time to separate the beef and the sauce so it taste better. This is a no-drill, mom-and-pop business serving home cooking food. The menu includes a few combos, which is good for those like me that don't know what exactly to get but want to try different items. It's cafeteria style, so you get your food quick. I ordered a two-item combo: the beef and fish. The beef was very tender and flavorful. It was like braised beef with potatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. The sauce was not too greasy or rich, and it didn't taste like too exotic. The fish is a bit fishy or maybe more than a bit. It was spicy with a slight sourness and coconut taste. In fact, I like the sauce more ham the fish. I mixed the sauce with the steam rice. It was very delicious! The service was fine. The owner (I think he is) is very friendly. He took time to introduce the food to me, so I go to know what I was getting. I'll come back again to try other items. If I'm bold enough, I may try their dinuguan - pork in pig blood.
