I was supposed to try this truck at a private tasting event at OC Wine Mart last week, but I had to cancel and I was super bummed. Then I got really excited when I found out that they would be at Canyon High School by my house on Tuesday night. Yay! This was my last truck of the evening and even though I was already full, I ordered their Queso Fundido Nachos. It's $8 and the portion is a really good size, I shared with my boyfriend and friend and we still didn't finish it. There is loads of chorizo (pretty spicy chorizo too!), salsa, cheese and guacamole on top of corn chips. It got pretty messy and it would be good to grab a fork to finish this dish. The flavors were great and it was very filling. I definitely want to try other items this truck has to offer, hopefully they will be at Canyon again soon! read more

WOW double WOW expected good, but it was extraordinary! I ordered the Abuelitas Sopes. One with steak and the other with chorizo. One bite into the chorizo sope and I was in heaven. I thought sopes this good only came from my abuelita's kitchen. I am so pleased. I hope this truck comes back every Wednesday. Yumminess to the max!!!! I was contemplating between trying Kala Truck or getting my usual spicy pork burrito from Kogi Truck, but my tastebuds are so glad to have tried Kala Truck! (Not that Kogi Truck is bad, it's good too lol) I ordered the Ooey Gooey Nachos. It was flavorful, filling, & a very generous size. Like traditional nachos, it has melted cheese, onions, guac, sour cream, & etc. What's different though is that there's chunks of juicy and tangy chorizo! And all of this was piled on top of a bed of tri-colored tortilla chips. I'm usually super unlucky whenever I try to try new foods, but luck was with me and it was $8.25 well spent! The side of the truck advertises "Authentic Mexican food," and it doesn't lie. Also, if you don't feel like tortilla chips they have something similar called Sweet Pastor Fries, only there's pulled pork on top of an abundance of fries instead and it's just as equally delicious! So if you come across Kala Truck, but are in that grey-zone debating on whether or not to get Chipotle or some other everyday mock-Mexican fast food, step out of your usual routine and try Kala Truck! Food truck rally was held at the World Trade Center in Long Beach. Stopped by during my lunch break. This truck had the most appetizing menu and the longest line compared to the others so we opted to wait. El Burrito ($8 or $9) with quinoa instead of rice?! Interesting! However, the burrito had too much beans. The flavor overpowered all other ingredients in the burrito. Very little shrimp and steak =/ A co-worker ordered shrimp tacos with extra avocadoes and side of chips.. they did not give her the avocadoes and gave about 5 pieces of chips for 50c charge. Another coworker had the southwest chicken quesadilla and they forgot the guacamole and cream sauce.. We went almost towards the end too. Wouldn't mind giving it another shot just because of the quinoa .. never seen that from a food truck. Next time I'll have to try the cajun shrimp tacos and sweet pastor fries. read more

Loved this truck tonight! Tried it at the San Clemente High Food Truck night! Order taker was super friendly, and I got the sliders - HUGE sliders. Not those itty bitty sliders where it's mostly bread, and no meat, I mean, this thing was a MAN slider. Two sliders, and huge chunks of pork, that made my friend jealous. I got no crema, but I feel it would have been awesome. The best part, was the pickled onion - I'll have to ask for extra next time. So fresh. So yummy. Bread was super soft, but the pretzel made me a little wary. Not too salty, just soft. If you can eat with the big boys, do it!!! I had a chance to try the Kala Truck during one of their visits to the Anaheim Convention Center. They won a tasting by default, I had tried all the other trucks present, so I had no idea what I was headed in for. I ordered their Patron tacos, and they were really good, much better than I expected. Very complex flavors and layers. The meat was tender and flavorful, but not a taste I would enjoy on its own. The meat however was perfect with the other flavors happening in the taco. It had a kick I wasn't anticipating, and I am a wuss with heat, but the guacamole offered a good soothing quality. First time running into this food truck. Had a quick lunch at a conference. The truck is was well decorated as most of these trucks are now. Service was as expected. Not spectacular but not bad. Food. Had patron tacos. Size was street taco size, pretty small. Corn tortilla, marinated beef, tomato heavy pick de gallo, and Mexican cheese. Pick de gallo seemed just like tomatoes no real spice. Beef was soft but didn't have much flavor. Only big flavor was cheese. Price was ~$13 for can of coke and 2 small tacos. Overall, not worth it for the money. Will skip next time. read more

Great fish tacos! The amount is generous, and because the cut is thick, it still feels very meaty. Not as much a fan of the less flavorful chicken (tacos or burrito) but the mango salsa for the chicken plates is really good, and you can ask for the mango salsa on your fish. The watermelon agua fresca really is made from real watermelons, so very refreshing on a summer day. People working there are very friendly too. read more

Ran across this truck at the OC Wine Mart recently and was most impressed by nearly everything I tried. Was also very impressed by Hector who helped us, and is one of the family members that runs this new operation. Awesome customer service Hector! What I partook of; El Patron Tacos: some of the most tender and juicy carne tacos ever. Sweet Piggy Tacos: pork shoulder topped with caramelized onions, pineapple, and a jicama slaw. Definitely different, probably wouldn't order again as I am not a huge fan of pineapple. But it is a nice refreshing treat, especially if you love pineapple. Cajun Shrimp Taco: admittedly I wasn't hungry by the time this rolled around, so I pinched one of the shrimps off the top. Not sure why they are called "Cajun" as there wasn't any detectable Cajun spice, but the shrimps themselves were fresh and cooked properly giving off that familiar snap. Kala Quesadilla: If you love mushrooms (I do! I do!) you will love this. Chocked full of button shrooms with a very tasty homemade tomatillo salsa on the side for dipping. Delish. Queso Fundido: WOW......the hit of the night. Their "gourmet" version of the lowly nachos. I don't even particularly like nachos, but these were off the hook delicious. I couldn't stop eating them. Made with perfectly spiced chorizo, Oaxaca and pepper jack cheeses, with a generous amount of fresh ripe avo's. Again, WOW. I think I found my new favorite food truck! I love family owned operations. This one is a brand new food truck ran by two brothers and a sister who obviously take pride in the quality of their food and knows customer service. They hosted a trial run at my place in order to get feedback on how to improve their menu and presentation. That shows me not only they are humble, but they truly care about their customers. Now to the business of the food. We had the privilege of trying their entire menu! El Patron Tacos - My favorite dish! Made from Hanger Steak or Arrachera (the most tender cut of beef), I must say this is the tastiest and most tender steak I've ever tasted in a taco! I couldn't really taste the tequila, but the whole dish with guacamole, pico de gallo, and lime was PERFECTION. Sweet Piggy Taco - I liked the topping made with Jicama and pineapple, and the slow-cooked pork was a tad sweet and spicy. Citrus Chicken - Another winner made with quality chicken meat with mango and jalapeño topping. Very spicy and tasty! I usually skip chicken tacos but this one I will order again. Cajun Shrimp Taco - They use plump and fresh shrimps, unlike many rubbery shrimps out there. It needed more Cajun spice and a wedge of lime. Then it would be perfect! Kala Quesadilla - AMAZING! It's filled with mushrooms and delicious real cheese and caramelized onions. The spicy tomatillo salsa is indeed SPICY, so beware. Conchinita Sliders - Yummy Pork Sandwich using Pretzel Bread. Streetside Enchiladas - I did not like mine stuffed with quesco fresco, I should have got the chicken one. Not my favorite because I don't like black beans either. Queso Fundido - AN EXPLOSION OF FLAVORS! The best Nachos you'll ever have, smothered with homemade Chorizo, tomatoes, onions, grilled peppers, and pepper jack cheese! Southern Shrimp Sandwich - Just a bigger version of the Cajun Shrimp Taco but on a bun. More delicious shrimps! Creamy Roasted Poblanos and Corn - I love corn so I'm partial to this dish! Citrus Quinoa - Seems well done, but sorry I hate Quinoa! In conclusion, this is some of the best (not only Mexican) food that you can enjoy out of a gourmet food truck! Had a chance to taste some of their stuff during an event at Julie L.'s OC Wine Mart. They were nice enough to provide the food so here we go straight to the point. El Patron Tacos - Of the 3 tacos, this is my favorite. Super tender steak with that slight zing from the spiceness but well balanced with the lime and queso fresco and guacamole. If you want tacos, do this one for sure. Sweet Piggy Taco - Great texture from the pork since it was slow-cooked but I would have liked less pineapple and jicama slaw. They seemed to interfere with the juiciness from the pork. Still a good taco if you like pork. I think their recipe has been modified since then. Cajun Shrimp Taco - The shrimp came out overtaking the rest of the ingredients of the taco. Maybe it was because of the fiberous/chewy texture of the shrimp. But I tasted mostly shrimp and the rest of the "Cajun" was a bit lost. Kala Quesadilla - My second favorite of the night. Just a great quesadilla overall. Riding that line between crispy and soft and chewy. I love mushrooms so this is a winner but it'd still be awesome even without mushrooms. I want more just writing about this right now. Conchinita Sliders - This is the third "must-have" item on my suggestion list. Juicy pulled-pork infused with achiote and spices on toasted pretzel rolls. I love the additions of cilantro, crema and pickled red onions. It didn't take me long to scarf down the whole thing after my first bite. Just so good and not over sized. I even tried to eat Minerva's portion. Streetside Enchiladas - There were 2 variants: one stuffed with queso fresco and one stuffed with chicken. I got to try the one with queso fresco. It was really good. Super thick and creamy and delicious. The exterior was a bit soggy but that's my fault. I left it alone for awhile due to talking to everyone else. I'm sure it wasn't when it came out of the kitchen. Although I would have liked the sauce to be a bit spicier. And I recommend just eating this with your hands instead of trying to fork pieces off... much more efficient just picking it up and eating it with your hands for this item. Some times being civilized is pointless =) Queso Fundido - Absolutely my favorite of the night! Simply an explosion of flavors. Think of the best from Carne Asada fries and the best from Nachos and combine them haahah. Just hits all the needed textures/flavors: sweet, salty, crunchy, cheesy, and on and on. Definitely get this from them. Southern Shrimp Sandwich - This one was a bit odd for me. It seemed like there was too much bread or the bread got in the way of the rest of the item. When I picked off the shrimp to eat by itself, it was DELICIOUS with the surrounding sauce and veggies but when I ate it as a whole with the bread and everything, it just didn't work out. So I actually had a better eating experience without the bread. Creamy Roasted Poblanos and Corn - I loved this little side item. It's like a buffed up version of sweet Mexican corn. Texture-wise it was nice and soft until you got to a kernel of corn and then it was an explosion of corn. Thumbs up for this item. Citrus Quinoa - If you're a fan of quinoa, this is really good. It's a nice bright and refreshing side item. Of course, the citrus plays a big role in the taste spectrum of this item and it was integrated really well. I used this as an ender for my night since it was a really good palate cleanser after all of the cheese and meat from the other items. I think the family that does Kala Truck are pioneers. There aren't many gourmet or artisan Mexican foods around yet. And they're doing a really good job bringing this higher-level of Mexican cuisine to everyone. At a private trial-run tasting, the Kala Truck allowed us to try out their entire menu in exchange for comments on improving [keep this in mind as you read the review]! Let's get down to the business of talking food - the tacos can start. We had the El Patron Tacos (tender steak marinated in Patron and lime and topped with pico de gallo, queso fresco, and guacamole), Sweet Piggy Tacos (slow-cooked pork shoulder with ancho chile, caramelized onions and pineapple served with crunchy jicama slaw), and Cajun Shrimp Tacos (spicy grilled shrimp dressed with Poblano cream sauce atop finely shredded cabbage and cilantro). The El Patron tacos were my favorite of the three for its very, very tender steak and the zing in my mouth from its spiciness! The Sweet Piggy tacos seemed not to fit my style so much from all the sweetness of the pineapple and jicama but the texture of the slow-cooked meat was definitely desirable. The Cajun Shrimp tacos were a bit bland to be honest but Kala Truck was definitely making themselves open to suggestions/comments so I made sure to let them know about this - I know it will be adjusted appropriately if they find multiple similar comments! If you're looking for cheesiness, you've got several options. Two of those options include the Kala Quesadilla (flour tortilla stuffed with cremini and button mushrooms, mozzarella and pepper jack cheese, epazote, and caramelized onions and served with a spicy tomatillo salsa for dipping) and the Queso Fundido (mild blend of chorizo, tomatoes, onions, and peppers grilled with Oaxaca and pepper-jack cheese until gooey and and served with truck made corn chips and topped with chunky guacamole). The Kala Quesadilla is a definite must for those who love mushrooms (I'm guilty of this!) and fabulous cheese; it was crunchy on the outside and savorily soft on the inside. What a perfect quesadilla! It didn't even need its accompanying sauce. The Queso Fundido, though, was probably the crowd favorite because it hit all of the great parts in a dish - sweet, salty, crunchy, gooey, and so forth. Think of nachos fancied up and ten times more delicious! More options to choose from: the Cochinita Sliders (tender, juicy pulled pork infused with achiote and spices, served on toasted pretzel rolls and garnished with crema, cilantro, and pickled red onions), Southern Shrimp Sandwich (bolillo roll loaded with blackened shrimp, poblano cream sauce, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and spicy radishes), or the Street-side Enchiladas (two enchiladas stuffed with your choice of either chicken or queso fresco and smothered in a rich ancho-chile sauce served atop epazote black beans and kissed with queso fresco and crema). Of course we had them all though. The sliders were one of my favorites for the evening for the truly tender pork and the crunchy roll; the flavor of their combination of spices really shone through. The Southern Shrimp sandwich was something that I could easily pass over unfortunately because though the shrimp was delicious here (and much better than the shrimp taco ones), the overall sandwich didn't stand out. Of the enchiladas, I only got the one stuffed with queso fresco and not chicken. Delicious filling but a soggy exterior (than preferred in enchiladas) and a sauce that could have used a little more "oomph." Let's move on to the sides offered. There were the Epazote Black Beans (served with cauliflower escabeche), Citrus Quinoa (with lime vinaigrette and topped with avocado, cilantro and grape tomatoes), and Creamy Roasted Poblanos and Corn (served with queso fresco and truck made corn chips). I'm not a big beans fan so I'm sure I'm biased when I say that the black beans were just okay. Texture-wise though, they were cooked to the right softness and presented well. The citrus quinoa was my favorite of the sides because it had such a bright pop of a taste from its vinaigrette. The roasted poblanos weren't nearly as detectable in taste as the corn but my, was the corn delightful. It had a creamy sauce that made it enjoyable and the familiar crunch of corn is always a good way to play with your food. By the way, they have awesome chips. So the sweet story behind Kala Truck goes beyond their desire to just create artful Mexican food. The team is a sibling trio of two brothers and one sister whose family has always been in the food truck business but not in the OC revolutionary sense we see now. Their parents used to run one of those nondescript white and blue Mexican food trucks - very casual and under-the-radar. With the burst of the gourmet food trucks in the area, the children wanted to do something different so Kala Truck was born. What a lovely team! The offerings from this truck are delicious, tasty, packed with with flavor, and are nicely presented. They're really elevating food truck food! I ordered the chicken tamarind wrap, but swapped out the chicken for steak. Steak was tender and flavorful. Quinoa was fluffy and flavorful. Nice bunch of mixed greens with little tomato bits to balance the tangy tamarind. The ratio of meat to greens to quinoa was spot on. Generous wrap so I'm saving the 2nd half for later. I also got an order of the garlic fries and they were awesome. Honestly had a hard time finishing it all since it was a lot of food. Attended the Namm Show, so Im from out of town. Being from. San Francisco we get spoiled with great food trucks, so I was excited to give these guys a try. Cooked to perfection, fresh produce and salsas but its A LL about the sauces! The cajun. Shrimp with poblano cream sauce is super fantastic and the Baja. Fish tacos with the chipotle cream sauce is AMAZING. Bring on the heat and big flavor..... To get three huge tacos, all different flavors for $11 is a fantastic deal. This is definitely a good truck with some highlights and some items a little dull. First off, the good: Their tacos are amazing. I tried the El Patron (steak), chicken and Cajun shrimp. I'm not really a huge chicken taco fan, but these were by far some of the best and nice and spicy. The shrimp were also very good. The steak was just kind of average, but not bad by any means. I also loved their cochinita sliders. The slow roasted pork was awesome with pickled red onions on a pretzel roll. I think I could order a dozen and eat them all. Really great pairing. Roll was soft, but not mushy. The El Burrito was just kind of mediocre in my book. There wasn't a lot of shrimp or steak in it, which was really the only good part. They use quinoa instead of rice, which I've had before, but you really just need classic rice in a burrito. I also had the fries with the slow cooked pork shoulder and guac on them. The fries were either too thick or undercooked and did not hold up to the wonderful guac and pork. The pork (I believe the same they used in their sliders) was very savory and not very spicy. Not a bad thing, but not what I was expecting. If I had to guess, it had a heavy bay leaf flavor. I'd definitely try this truck again and I love that they have a ton of items on their menu to try. Hector gave our office a heads up that they'd be dropping by for lunch today and I grabbed the Kala Quesadilla after reading some other reviews. 'Twas super awesome! The mushrooms and caramelized onions were delicious and the tortilla had just the right amount of crisp. One of my coworkers got the Oooey Gooey Nachos on chips while another got them on fries - both had really generous portions spilling from the tray and smelled great. Another coworker who is a vegetarian asked for the tacos without meat, and they were cool about changing them up with some mushrooms; they also made her some meatless Ooey Gooey Nachos with mushrooms and black beans. We hired Kala for my boyfriends birthday party. Since our street is narrow and not alot of room in our driveway we opted for the taco cart to serve us up some delish tacos in our backyard. They showed up at 3:30pm to start preparing the food and food was ready to eat right at 4pm we hired them for 2 hours and ordered the 3 meat catering items. My office has different food trucks come in every Wednesday during Summer month; today was Kala truck. I had Protein Bowl with grilled fish. It was good! 2 pieces of tender, juicy fish, cooked perfectly with light seasoning. The bowl has sweet corn, spanish rice, refried beans, some mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, cheese and a handful of chips. Chips are good and not oily. For the salsa, I picked the red one as I asked which one is spicy: red or green; and ere told the red one. OY! It's spicy but was really good mixed it with the fish & everything else in the bowl. For $10 a bowl, it's a lot to eat - the bowl was big. Definitely will eat their food again if I encounter them in the future. read more

Semi-randomly decided to try this food truck out of a line of food trucks while at Corgi Beach Day in Huntington, and let me tell you, it was an awesome decision. The line was long, but it moved at a good pace, and when we got to the front we were immediately greeted with a smile from one of the food truck workers. After much back and forth contemplation, I ended up deciding on the Kalafornia burrito with carnitas (I also switched out the jalapeño sour cream for the chipotle cream sauce, personal preference). The food was well worth the wait, and then some! The meat was delicious, and the fries inside just took it over the top!
