The service was excellent. The servers were great and friendly. The food was delicious. The queso fundido was great. The gooey cheese mixed with chorizo and mushroom and jalapeño slices was good. People, you need to try it. The molcajete was delicious, but it wasn't inside a molcajete like it usually is. It was served on a wooden tray. Besides that, the carne asada was tender, the shrimp was flavorful, and the chicken was excellent. I wasn't too fond of the cactus because it was sour and slimy. I love the ambiance. It always has a good vibe. The music and the neon lights make the place look like a nightclub. I would go again. read more

We had the chance to go on a Sunday and to our surprise there was a live mariachi band which added to the already pretty cool theme. Food was your traditional Cali-Mexican style cuisine. Got the Kali-Burrito and it was delicious. We had the best server Omar, he was kind and was ready to serve. If you are in the Newport/Irvine area you should definitely come try this place. read more

Had a good time and dining experience at Kalaveras in Newport Beach. We had reservations for the evening and arrived a bit early and decided to sit at the bar. Daniel, the bartender, was superb in both customer service and his craft cocktail mixology. We started with ranch water with Don Julio Blanco with Topo Chico and three limes muddled with mint and the empanada appetizer. The ambiance was positive, and the background music complimented the ambiance. My wife ordered the chile Verde chicken enchilada plate, and I had the chicken fajitas. The best quesabirria tacos, ribeye taco was also amazing and best flan i've had in my whole life. 3.5 stars for food, 4.5 for service. After visiting Kalaveras in Silverlake and being blown away by their delicious food and drinks, I was excited to try a location closer to home. We went on a Friday night and I was surprised to find that it wasn't very busy. This worked out in our favor as we had our dog with us, but I'm typically wary when I see a restaurant with so many open tables on a Friday night. We ordered drinks and I was kicking myself for not ordering the mojito that I had enjoyed at the Silverlake location. My skinny margarita tasted like it was made with cheap tequila, so I'd definitely recommend upgrading to a higher shelf. The chips and salsa were just okay, as were my enchiladas verdes. My boyfriend enjoyed his shrimp fajitas, but I'm not sure they were a destination dish. Overall, based on the food, I'm not itching to come back. With that said, the staff were very nice and were so sweet to our dog. Took off .5 stars because we didn't have any napkins or silverware until after our entrees came (and we had to ask twice for them). All in all, I'd still go to a Kalaveras, but would try out a different location. Sorry! read more

Wow, they have upped their game for Taco Tuesdays. The tortillas are street taco size. They have a buffet set up where a server offers MANY different choices of meat and gives a generous portion for each taco. Then there's a salsa and veggie bar that is so robust- fresh cucumbers, marinated carrots, cilantro several salsas, shredded cabbage- and the tacos are only $1.49 each. I came here several months ago and it was really disappointing, but now I'm planning my next Taco Tuesdays visit. Also, their Albondigas soup is fantastic. Maria was on top of our every need and the taco meat server was really kind and gave us a small bite of meat to sample if we didn't know what it tasted like. Excellent service! read more

I brought my cousin and her friend here to celebrate their birthdays. The food and ambiance looked great and upbeat for a birthday celebration! The good: the food- everything was delicious. Great flavors, well seasoned and well cooked. The not so great: the service. It didn't seem as if it was very full and there were a few servers yet our server seemed very overwhelmed. She took very long periods in between seating us, asking for our drinks and then our order. We asked for napkins or a straw and she would forget and not come back. She's kept apologizing so I understand she recognized this but it did put a damper on the evening. The feedback I would have is I asked a few times (reservation notes, at the front and when seated) if they could give us some fun seating for the birthday girls. They say us right in the middle of the floor - and there were some fun booths empty. Hidden Mexican spot with great vibes! They play great Latin music here and the service was quite fast. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very funny and knowledgeable. I do give it 4 stars because he did give us some light drinks, which I wasn't too thrilled about. For drinks, we all tried an assortment of the margaritas and I really recommend trying the tamarind margarita. It is a combination of tamarind, orange and spice from the chamoy. I drank it like juice it was so yummy! We got the asada, barbacoa, and cameron tacos, pictured below. I will definitely come back for this happy hour and update with more pictures and a detailed review. Their happy hour is weekdays from 3pm - 7pm and have amazing deals! read more

My friend told me about this place from their Instagram and we wanted to go for their Taco Tuesday deal ($1.49 tacos). The way it works is that they actually have a taco stand with someone standing there and serving you your tacos and there's also a self serve toppings bar that you can help yourself to as well. While knowing I can't expect too much given the price, I noticed that they were VERY skimpy with the meat. One of my tacos literally had 2 cubes of Al Pastor in it and was basically all tortilla, so I had to fill it up with all the toppings to make up for it. The tacos were tiny, so I ended up having to get 6 of them. To be honest, the salsas (and especially the guac) were all pretty bland with little to no flavor, and the meat was no different. I also ordered off the happy hour menu and got a margarita (delicious) and the tacos gobernador, which was probly the star of the night even though this was just the "mini" version. The happy hour and taco Tuesday offerings were solid, but I just wish they didn't skimp out so much on the meat and quality, even with the gobernador. They made it very clear that the quality was less than standard due to the lower price, which was disappointing. I feel that happy hour / daily deals should be the same quality as the normal menu items, and the point of those promotions is to bring people in, especially new customers like myself. Again, didn't have super high expectations due to the promotional pricing, but just overall disappointed in the quality of the food. However, the service was good and the vibes seem cool, so I'll have to come back and try out the regular menu soon! read more

- Vibes: casual (chill date, girls night out) - Crowd: manageable, never had to wait to be seated - Menu: diverse/trendy, a bit pricey (over $5/taco, $12+ drinks) - Parking: lots (in a shopping center) I've been here twice now, and would definitely recommend coming for Happy ("Therapy") Hour- 3-7p weekdays. The starters which are normally near $20 are only $8! We tried the tacos gobernador (cheesy and flavorful with a creamy dipping sauce), 3-taco combo (asada [the best imo], pollo, and chicharron [fatty and flavorful]), and loaded asada fries (lots of meat with a spicy green salsa. Delicious). Service is not bad. we came at 6;15p on a Thursday and our orders were taken right away but it took us a while to get someone's attention to continue ordering before happy hour ended. It's never terribly crowded so I wish we were served a bit faster. Drinks-wise, this place is lots of fun. 8+ margarita flavors (tamarindo, jamaica, chamoy, pepino, etc). The first time we came all the margs I had were immensely weak...but I gave it another shot and they were much stronger the second day. If you're like me and like stronger drinks, I recommend the classic marg or the chamoyada (super tangy!). read more

It was a slow night so lots of seating was available. They let us choose our seats which I thought was nice. The drinks were so good and the tamarindo candy was even better. The fries were delicious. We also got the birria tacos and the shrimp tacos with rice and beans. Needless to say, we were stuffed by the end of the night. The service was great and our server gave us lots of time to look over the menu. The birria tacos were my absolute favorite, they were so warm and tender. The meat practically melted in my mouth. I didn't like that the shrimp tacos had the toppings on the side. Wish the topping came on top already but no biggie. Everything else was great and parking was very easy to find. The inside is also very cute, perfect for a date. The lights are dimmed so it gives a nice vibe. Would come again especially during happy hour! read more

I work in the plaza that this resturaunt is in and I use to get food and drinks after work all the time. This place has seriously gone down hill ever since opening. The people who work here have just gotton worse and worse. Impatient nots personable and straight cold especially the girl who bartends with red hair.. Gianfranco I think was my bartender here rude and not very professiona and came up with a ton of excuses as to why I cant order somthing I've gotten here more times than I can remeber. Everything is is super exspensive 2 tacos and a drink will come out to rught under 30$. Annoying music just loud the entire time hard to have conversations whith whoever your with. Not a great experiance I wish the old team worked here instead of whoever these new people are..... the staff was one of the main reasons I would come here on a bi weekly basis. Not anymore. Bring back Kevin or Leo. Over priced AND bad service is never a good combanation. I will stop referring my clients here for good and will continue to spread the word within the plaza that there service at this location has gone wayyyyy down hill. Like I said I work in the plaza and after work I would rather drive to thier location in orange on the 55 freeway in dead stop traffic than step foot back in this place. Seriously pitiful. I stopped by around 4:30 PM on a Friday, and the place wasn't busy at all. The service was quick, attentive, and super friendly, which made the experience even better. I ordered from the happy hour menu and was honestly surprised by how good everything tasted. I tried the potato taquitos, and while they were great, just keep in mind that the happy hour version doesn't include meat. The real standout for me was the asada fries and the chips. They were so delicious, and I'll definitely be coming back for those and a margarita! read more

Taco Tuesday is muy legit here! $2 and the choices include: carne asada (lean n popular), carnitas (juicy af), pollo (for healthy people), barbacoa (oily yumminess), black pastor (kinda spicy), chicarones. Mexican from Mexico approved. Toppings are self serve and include fajitas, cilantro, onion, lemon, cucumbers, radish, spicy carrots, shredded cabbage, salsa picante (tomatoey), verde (thick) and rojo (hot). Shout out to OMAR and JACKIE at how fast and responsive they are plus being really friendly which makes coming here un excellente way to enjoy Taco Tuesday. Parking is in the back lot of the restaurant, not the side lot. Gets crowded right after work and happy hour is before 6 and they have $7 margaritas Mondays. read more

This spot has good margaritas and decent priced authentic Mexican dishes. The service was a bit lacking, but it might have been just the server. We were able to get seated pretty quickly on a Friday during lunch. Only complaint was that we were hardly checked on during a slow lunch day. My friend didn't receive an extra set of utensils until 30 minutes into the entree. We also never got the chance to ask for chips and salsa refills. I would consider that all standard asks at any restaurant. I tried the wet burrito and it was delicious. The founders and co-owners of Stowaway, Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, created this extension to the tiki bar with a wildly interesting Pinocchio theme and the famed encounter with Monstro the whale all the while serving the same offerings in Stowaway but with also an exclusive limited menu just for this adventure. With its proximity to Disneyland and its Enchanted Tiki Room, with the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture they found a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, tropical trimmings, and nostalgic know-how. How would my belly handle the beastly drinks concocted here!? PURCHASE(S) Gepetto's Last Words ($16.00): Intrigued by the cocktail's name, this elixir was crafted with Fid Street Gin, tangerine, creme de violette, lemon, and cucumber, it was a citrusy refreshing sweet drink that was decorated with bright yellow petals. They have a fabulous menu for those that missing truly authentic or for folks interested to try new French meals . Great selection of wines from different French regions that are affordable (in France is not about the price tag but more on the region it grew from). I dined at Kalaveras on the patio with my dog, and it was a decent experience overall, though it had some highs and lows. I was seated promptly at 7:09 PM, and the patio was nice and quiet--no other customers were out there, which was great for a relaxing meal. My server first approached me at 7:13 to take my drink order (just water), and it arrived along with some chips at 7:21. I placed my food order at the same time. Kalaveras is an excellent restaurant for incredible drinks, outstanding customer service, and one-of-one decor. If you're dining in, then the food will be top-notch. For To-go orders, well, it's a hit or miss. While the cooks will do their best to exceed your expectations, just know certain dishes will not have the same effect on you as if you were dining in at the restaurant. I know firsthand about To-Go orders because I ordered a few dishes this evening and got home and was disappointed. I must say, though, that management took pride in their role and, upon my return, had the dishes prepared again. The dishes were made way better, and for that, I thank the management and staff. I could have come here and left a 1 star, but that wouldn't do any good for the establishment without knowing what went wrong. Thanks again to management for being understanding. read more

My husband and I wanted to take our 12 and 14 year old out to a nice lunch. We ordered 2 margaritas. The server asked if we wanted a double. Husband said yes without knowing what to expect. The food was decent, margarita was maybe a little above average and the dessert was excellent, but the reason for the 1 star is our bill was $250. The kids had a taco, I had taquitos and my husband had a beef plate, 3 desserts, & 2 margis...that's it! The server never mentioned the extra shot of tequila was going to make the margarita $50/each! That's insane! Not to mention they automatically add 18% gratuity so our margarita is now $59. I feel they are greedy to charge so high and unprofessional. Servers should make the guest aware of such astronomical charges. Unfortunately, we will never be back......well, maybe for the churros but that's a HUGE maybe! read more

The Asada Kala bowl, priced at a somewhat steep $17, presented a medley of green salad, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, roasted pineapple, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and tortilla chips, accompanied by cilantro rice and a ginger vinaigrette. While the asada beef boasted a tender texture, the overall composition of the dish felt somewhat underwhelming. The salad components were modest in quantity, and the cilantro rice lacked distinction. I recently dined at Kalaveras and had an amazing experience. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent - I had Tacos Gobernador and they were truly perfection. The restaurant has a great ambiance and a nice bar. Our server, Jerry, was very friendly and attentive. The Queso Fundido was delicious as was the Tacos Dorados, Guacamole, Nachos, and Aguachiles. I recently dined at Kalaveras in Costa Mesa and had a fantastic experience. Our server, Manu, was exceptional! He was attentive and friendly and provided incredible service. We enjoyed the ceviche, tacos dorados, and a wet shrimp enchilada, accompanied by a refreshing mango margarita. While the enchilada's smoky sauce wasn't to our personal taste, the overall quality of the food was impressive. The vibrant atmosphere and Manu's outstanding service made our visit memorable. I've been going to the Kalaveras in Chino for years now and the food here is just as good! The service was really nice, they checked up on us whenever we needed refills or more drinks. The bathrooms were clean and they even gave us a complimentary horchata. The atmosphere is much different than the original location though. It's more of a restaurant than a bar with the way the tables are set up and the music playing. Overall it's a great experience and I'll be coming back when I'm in the area. read more

We visited Kalaveras last night for the first time. Service was top-notch by server OMAR, he was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. We had the Mexican enchilada trio, quesbirrias, and tacos gobernador, Margaritas and Micheladas. They were beyond delicious. You can tell they take pride in what they do. I went to the restaurant that used to be here for years, took a chance on Kalaveras and was extremely impressed. Without a reservation they were able to accommodate our party of five. Phew! Came across this place while shopping in New Port. I am so glad I decided to go in. Wasn't sure what to get when my server Dallas recommended the Pasta Diabla and the Horchate Slushie. OMG!
