It's been ages since I've been here. It's one of two subterranean dining places that I'm aware of in Chinatown. The entrance on Washington St is small with just a small stairway leading to the restaurant. Might be difficult for those with those with walking staircases. My friend and I wanted to dine here to try the tomato beef chow mein as it is one of Mike C's go-to dishes here. We arrived at 11:30 on a recent Thursday and there were two tables of diners and we were promptly seated. It's a hole in a wall place so don't expect a great ambiance. Checking out the menu, we ordered: Tomato beef pan fried noodles - Noodles were not overly crispy. It was very good with lots of tomatoes and yellow bell peppers Beef chow fun - was well made and had wok hei. They also gave complementary vegetable house soup. My buddies and I were venturing through China town. It finally came time to find a place to eat. This place is located in the basement of a building. When we came down the stairs and noticed we were the only white people there. We knew the food was gonna be fire. And it really was. The staff were super friendly. The place didn't seem like the cleanest place in the world. The bathroom had a slimy texture to it that your feet started sliding while standing still. I LOVE old-skool Chinese places as it reminds me of home. This one is a Chinatown staple, where locals, and older folks always come back and I am so mentally satisfied that we tried. Being in a basement of a building, it is nothing fancy with a few round tables of different sizes (which i love) and some tables for two. Service was great, and the server speaks English which was very unassuming. They have a few vegetarian/no-meat dishes and vegetable stir-fry dishes which was very helpful. Most of the lunch options are around $10. GOLD! We had Szechuan tofu over rice which is spicy but as someone with a high-spice tolerance, it was just mild to me. (They could make it extra spicy). It is a comfort meal, satisfying, and filling enough. NOT HUGE PORTIONS FOR $10 but it was comfortable for lunch. Shrimp with vegetable over rice was a classic thing. After a really amazing Chinatown history tour given by a local who is very well known, we were all pretty hungry and our tour leader suggested this place. Kam Lok means "Gold Happy," and you'll definitely leave this place happy but leave with less gold than you walked in, but a full and satiated belly. This place is definitely a hole in the wall and as for ambiance, well it doesn't have any. We sat at one of the back tables and had a very large group, probably 15 people. The food here was excellent and I got to try dishes I have never had before. I also enjoyed the bitter melon dish as I don't get to eat this often. There was a meat pie dish that was excellent and where my family is from, we have something similar but just a tad different. This casual subterranean spot is as old school as it gets in Chinatown, and it's really easy to miss on Washington Street unless you're looking for it in particular. I wasn't, but out of curiosity, I walked down the steps anyway to see the restaurant quite empty with the staff just chatting with each other. I think they were surprised to see me since the banquet tables signaled to me they target large groups. There was a robust selection of traditional Cantonese dishes in their menu, and some of the higher than normal prices likely reflected banquet size portions. Logically I probably should've gone with the $14 Sautéed Eggplant with Spicy Garlic Sauce or the $12 BBQ Pork Wonton Noodle Soup. However, the dish that drew my attention was the Steamed Chicken with Mustard Greens, a half chicken that would cost me a somewhat exorbitant $23 (Photo 9). I bit, and what arrived was a rather huge platter of steamed poultry surrounded by a forest of bok choy, all of it lacquered in a coating of sesame oil and accompanied by a small dish of minced garlic sauce. It was decent enough, and I was surprised how much of a dent I made. I might come back to try one of their house specials like their egg drop soup with deep-fried wontons, but I'll probably need to bring my own hungry batallion. I was born and raised in Chinatown. Trust me, when I say, this kitchen churns out some of the best Canto-cuisine in ALL of Chinatown. For whatever reason, their chef/cook is ABOUT IT. It's too bad this place suffers from visibility and marketing its storefront but if more people are able to try this place out, I'd bet it would be a hit. Realize, as you approach, it is in the basement where you walk down from the front entrance. They do have really cool looking old-fashioned flashy bulb-signage I hope they can revive to its optimum one day. What will surprise you even more is the low prices. Kam Lok is a classic SF Chinatown basement style restaurant. I've eaten here in the past and didn't post a review. Tonight, I had the runny egg shrimp chow fun $12. This was delicious with ample wok flavor. This dish can be challenging to make because chow fun and egg are kind of plain. That gravy has to be good. Their menu is limited if you are ordering fried rice, noodles and etc. It is more family style dishes orientated with only one page for rice and noodles. Not on the menu is crispy Hong Kong style noodles, which I love. If you ask, they will make it for you. So, don't rely too much on the written menu. Service was excellent. read more

This is a Cantonese restaurant that is in a basement - no windows. Basement restaurants once housed prostitution, gambling, and opium dens. Its entrance was hidden from the sidewalk via a steep, dark, narrow stairwell either with and without a gate. There are about 3 of these basement restaurants in SF Chinatown. All of these 'no frill" basement restaurants serve Cantonese food; nothing fusion - "soul" Chinese food. Service is quick and efficient. The waitress checked in frequently and made sure our tea pots were filled Portions are ample and ingredients are fresh. They can cook any dish that isn't on the menu. I ordered my two favorites from my childhood (1960) that most restaurants never heard of a stuffed boneless duck ($50) and stuffed boneless chicken ($50). None of these restaurants cook it alike. At Kam Lok, the stuffed boneless duck is filled with taro and Chinese vegetables like gingko nuts, lotus roots, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, jujubes, etc. It comes sliced with brown gravy. (Other restaurants fill theirs with barley, rice, etc. Each restaurant has their on take on it. Either way, it's good.) The stuffed boneless chicken is deep fried filled with sticky rice, Chinese sausage, Chinese bacon, dried shrimps. and Chinese mushrooms. (Note: These two dishes are prepared with onions and parsley. Since I don't eat these ingredients, I asked that it be omitted.) I ordered a whole steam fish with ginger, soya sauce, oil and green onions. (Even though I don't eat green onions, you need to have green onions to give the fish more flavor. The green onions are easily be taken off once the dish is on the table.) In a basement with modest decor, but serving very tasty dishes at a reasonable price. There are literally over 100 items on the menu, so it can be a bit hit-or-miss. But whatever you experiment with, you must try the dry fried pork! Spareribs with Spicy Salt: By far the stand out star. Reminded of those deep fried Cuban / Puerto Rican thinly sliced pork chops. Except instead of tons of white onions, these are served with green chili peppers and green onions. And despite the dish being named "spareribs" it's a bunch of pig pieces parts. Though many cuts did remind me of pork chops, some others were like small cross sections of ribs, like you'd see in Korean BBQ kalbi. Regardless of the form, all delicious. But eat carefully; there are varying sizes of bones and gristle in the mix. Minced Beef and Rice Plate: Technically this looked like small slices of beef rather than a minced/ground beef. Lots of gravy. It was tasty, but it seemed a bit overboard on the rice-to-meat ratio. Since the meat is scooped on top of the rice, you can't designate your own ratio. So it felt too carby to me, especially considering how much meat I got for about the same price with the pork dish. Pan Fried Noodle with Shredded Chicken: A super crispy nest of noodles and a nice gooey gravy of meat and vegetables. I explicitly asked that they separate my noodles from the gravy in my takeout order, since I hate soggy noodles, so not sure if this is their default behavior (though it should be, if it isn't). I ordered a striped (largemouth) bass in advance for $25/lb.; they regularly stock cheaper live catfish and tilapia for $15/lb. AP English requires the reading of Joy Luck Club. Took my daughter here. We started with a massage and then some noodles at Chongqing on Kearny. Then I was struck by how long of a line Z&Y had. So I was looking for a hole in a wall restaurant for my daughter to try - the real authentic SF Chinatown Chinese American food. This was my origin too. Sam Woo was closed by the time we finished our massages. My youth - from 15 to 23, were tied to this part of the town, but not by way of family connection but by much more convoluted historical events that one day that my daughter perhaps would write about. But for today, I was really just interested in introducing her to San Francisco Chinatown Chinese American Food (SFCCAF). Yes you heard me right. SFCCAF is not to be confused with Chinese American Food, or Chinese food, or Chinatown Chinese American Food. It's its own thing. She has never had Moo Shu Pork before. And she has never heard of Egg Foo Young. This place does both dishes well. Egg Foo Young was of course off the menu. The lady who served us the dish asked me if we needed some steam rice to go with the Egg Foo Young. The dish was laden with gravy so she assumed that we wanted steam rice but we did not as we already ate other food. We also ordered Yangzhou fried rice, which was very good. I'm astonished that a kid like her has never had a Moo Shu Pork or has heard of Egg Foo Young. We can name most of the French and German cuisine items, and yet my oldest have never ever had these items until she's about to go to college and she's lived her entire life here. How bad of a parent am I? We also ordered clay pot oyster and roasted pork, another SFCCAF item. When we were leaving, I smelled something delicious and awful at the same time. It was salted fish fried rice. My favorite, and another foreign item to my oldest. I'm somewhat feeling guilty for not having exposed my kids to such delightful SFCCAF items. Unlike other parents, I do have an obligation to provide such learning opportunities to my child given my cultural background. For many new Chinese immigrants or mixed kids, SFCCAF food is very foreign, certainly they are quite different than what you'd find elsewhere in United States or in China. I highly recommend everyone to give it a try. Either you learn to appreciate something new, or you get to re-experience your youth all over again, which was exactly how my daughter and I felt, respectively. Such a hidden gem in SF Chinatown! It's almost an equivalent to Wo Hop as both are located in the basement and both serve some really good food. We ordered a variety of dishes including lobsters, beef, seafood, rice, noodles, chicken wings, Peking pork chops, veggies, etc. They weren't necessarily the largest portions compared to some other Chinese restaurants. Every dish was flavorful and we cleaned up all the plates! We called ahead to make a reservation for a group of 12 people on a Sunday and we were glad to be able to all sit at one big table. Food came out fairly quickly and service was attentive. There was a sign for free two hour parking at a nearby garage if you spend over $50. We were able to find street parking a block away but good to know next time if we get to visit again. read more

Despite how my family and I used to eat in Chinatown quite a bit over the years, we never seemed to stray far from a handful of spots. This is a restaurant that I've been going for years, same for relatives. This is one of those "hole in the wall" or rather in this case, basement places located in Chinatown. It's a simple place that has been run by the same people for the longest time. My grandmother used to frequent this place when she lived in Chinatown and knows the owners well. We had came here for lunch one day during my recent visit to SF. The owners are really nice. The old male doesn't talk much but jokes when he does. His wife is young and works here as well, seems to take care of husband really well, and is really nice. We kind of YOLO'ed a bit on the ordering. Between 3 of us, ordered "Chicken Fried Rice w/ Salted Fish" 鹹魚雞粒炒飯, "Singapore Style Rice Noodles" 星洲炒米, Beef chow fun 乾炒牛河, and Peking style pork chops 京都排骨 The "Chicken Fried Rice w/ Salted Fish" came first. Awkwardly this is the first version I've had that includes peas and carrots. Flavor overall is decent but mildly "wet". Could use a LITTLE more salted fish flavor and be a little "drier". Next up was the "Singapore Style Rice Noodles". We had asked to be spicier but i feel like that request added more curry powder. HUGE amount of curry flavor but still missing on the "heat". Lol "Beef Chow Fun" was fairly decent overall. The beef was super tender and not over cooked. Some of the noodles were still stuck together, not allowing the soy sauce to color it. Times marches on and Kam Lok is no longer the hot spot we used to come every Sunday after church services...20+ years ago?! It has the typical unadorned, slightly dingy, Chinatown restaurant ambience, and the owner has not done much to make the basement space unique. The tables and chairs are the same ones from years ago. The waitresses seem overworked or at least always bustling about. This being Chinatown, don't expect 4 or 5 star service. Wave one down when you want attention. Obviously Kam Lok focuses on the local Chinese population, and not the tourist crowd. To stay in business all these years Kam Lok must be doing something right. Yes, it's all about the inexpensive but authentic Cantonese food. We watched people order beautiful streamed whole fish, stir fried Dungeness crab, and huge oysters in the shell...for lunch! Everything tasted pretty close to what we remembered from pre-Yelp years. We really came for the San Francisco specialty, Hung Tao Yee Fu Won Ton. It's deep fried won ton in a type of thickened egg drop soup. I haven't found it on the east coast, and it's a must try if you've never eaten it. A San Francisco treat! I have not had better pan fried noodles ANYWHERE......everytime we are in SF, we HAVE to come here to get the shredded pork OR chicken (it comes smothered in gravy with onions and bean sprouts). Amazing value and don't be intimidated because the restaurant is located basement level. I don't know why this restaurant isn't more popular... read more

Yes, it is in a basement. It is old school chinatown cantonese comfort food for me. Don't expect ambiance but a mom and pop feel to authentic family style food. I ordered some take out and was not disappointed on how much food I got for the price. Liked: - beef chow fun - BBQ pork and tofu over rice - came with house soup Meh - ambiance I am a fan. I don't need the frills in chinatown, just good food. Price is right and the people are friendly but then again, I am in the tribe. read more
