It's a really unique concept where you get to build your own brunch plate and try out a few options. I wasn't super hungry, so I got the open-faced sandwich (small creamer potatoes, remoulade, chives). It was delicious and filling, and every bite was creamy and decadent. I found out about Kantine a few months ago when my hubby surprised me with some early Easter treats (baked goods). I have been meaning to write about them, but I wanted to wait for an opportunity to try their brunch menu before I do. So here are our recent experience: We ordered the customizable 7-item brunch box $20+ some items are a few dollars additional as noted. Here are my picks: -soft scrambled egg with fresh herbs (gf =gluten-free)/keto: It was a nice scrambled eggs with chives I believe. -organic runny egg in spinach cream (gf)/keto: I love the look of the white/green. Mild in flavor, egg yolk is perfectly runny, but not too runny so it's creamy in consistency and goes well with the slightly mild flavor of the spinach purée. -kantine's cured bacon (gf)/keto: thick, not too salty, really good! -pink bay shrimp salad with potato and dill (gf); Initially my thought was it's a mild salad of baby shrimp made slightly creamy with the potatoes, but then I also tasted the slight pop of briny fish roe. Surprisingly not very salty. -raw Brussels sprout with pomegranate, pink peppercorn dressing (gf)/keto: This is pretty complex. Slightly spicy probably from the peppercorn dressing, then sweet from the pomegranate, and then an earthy taste (not unpleasant) from the Brussel sprouts and lastly a nutty taste from finely chopped walnuts they sprinkled on top. -butternut spread with puffed amaranth (gf); Sweet, slightly citrus, lightly creamy. -trout salad +$3; mild flavor but perks up by the flavorful pickled pink onions and garnish with dill. Goes well as a spread on bread, but didn't order any. We also ordered the following to try: pølsehorn ($4): Danish sausage rolls aka Pigs in a blanket. Crispy, crunchy, croissant-like, savory, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. I broke my low-carb rule and ate this delicious savory pastry. Bowl of organic tomato soup (v) ($10): Tomato soup with barley in it, so I have to be careful as it's not keto. However, it's very savory, and just one of the better tomato soups I had. Delicious. Cold Brew (keto by itself) with whole milk (keto depending on amount) ($4.25): it was nice, but not creamy enough for me, so I added more cream (higher fat content) at home. Previously, we tried the pastries and they were all very delicious. My overall thought on Scandinavian food from this restaurant is that it's fitting for cooler weather. Breakfast food tends to be spreadable, mostly meant to be eaten with carbs, hearty but heart-healthy full of omega-3s, Vitamin C, potassium. Aesthetically pleasing to look at and mostly mild in flavor but not muted in taste as it does have a certain pop, especially in the pickles and tomato soup. Pastries/baked goods are very yummy. It was veeeery packed when I visited on a Sunday afternoon - so do be prepared for crowds on the weekend and tables very close together - but otherwise, what *was* great was the interior and THE FOOD. A friend and I stopped by for a morning coffee and it was a great place to hang and catch up. We came early on a Saturday morning and had no trouble finding a seat or getting our order, though I'll note that it did get much busier later on. In terms of espresso & milk drinks, do not expect the caliber of bevvies you'd find all over Copenhagen. Your drink may be: too hot, too bitter, tepid, sour or, very occasionally, just right. In terms of goodies, you might have a baked good that is: nothing like its description would imply, barely contain any filling, tastes fine and/or looks splendid. The ginger shortbread on offer tastes nothing of ginger at all, but instead of the sugar crystals sprinkled liberally on top & should be renamed Sugar Shortbread Crunch. Kantine also boasts cardamom shortbread that smacks vaguely of cardie in the 1st bite, but ultimately tastes more of rising agent than anything else. The board was quite tasty, although the cauliflower and the beet spread could be a little more flavorful. The trout bowl was delicious but it could be a little bigger. When I think of bowls I tend to think of something that has grains, but this one doesn't and I left feeling a little hungry. Scandinavian brunch was such a unique experience! I looked forward the open faced sandwich the most and it was extremely aesthetic, but was more dry than I expected and a bit underwhelming. The Swedish flatbread, however, was very fresh with just the right amount of chewiness. The yogurt was amazing - loved the blend of textures and tart + creamy flavors. Stopped by after a hike at Land's end. Place was not busy around noon. Was able to snag a table real quick. They have about 5-6 tables right outside the restaurant. You order inside and they bring out the food to your table. I never had tasted Scandinavian food before so I was excited to try out some of their specialties. And so the obvious choice for me was to get the brunch board! They have a 5 item board and one with 7 items. I got the smaller one with Danish rye, smoked trout, overnight porridge, golden potatoes and scrambled eggs. The second board we ordered had a few common items in addition to the Swedish flatbread and beetroot hummus. The plating was on point and the items were cooked to perfection. The trout salad and eggs were literally melting in my mouth. The potatoes had a nice crunchy outside and a warm, mushy inside. It came with a white sauce that went pretty well with it. The beetroot hunmus sounded unusual but it was creamy as hell! The breads were toasted nicely and the porridge was a cool dessert to go along with the meal. I'd highly recommend checking this place out although it's a tad pricey. But then you can cross off one more cuisine option from your list! 10/10 would go back again! read more

I've had Kantine on my list for ages and finally got to try it out recently. There was a line out the door at 11AM on a Saturday, and you order your food at a counter. We got the build-your-own brunch with porridge sourdough bread, creamy spinach egg, soft scrambled eggs, pickled herring, and housemate yogurt. The portions look small but it was surprisingly filling! The platter is so cute as well :) My favorite was probably the scrambled eggs; they were super creamy and herby. The yogurt was also tasty with really unique seasonal fruit toppings! The other items were also yummy but it is on the pricier side for how much you get. We also ordered a cardamom morning bun and I think that might have been my favorite part of the meal. It was glazed perfectly with flaky, buttery layers of cardamom goodness. Sadly the build-your-own brunch board seems to be no more. In its place is a chosen-for-you breakfast plate that's diminished in both taste and value. Instead of an egg bathed in luxurious creamed spinach, there's now a soft boiled egg like you'd make yourself--and which you'd have to peel yourself also. There are two slices of cheese, which taste nice but don't compare to, say, some smoked trout or a good chunk of salmon. The yogurt with granola is fine, and so was the jam. Honestly the food was not bad at all, and if I sound meh about the whole thing, it's only that it's such a letdown compared to previous brunch boards. This new iteration costs a few bucks less (I think?), but I always felt the BYO boards were great value, while the plate now is not worth it at all. I mean, just look at the photos. A friend told me about this trending Scandinavian brunch spot and I had to try it (my only prior experience with Scandinavian food being the Ikea food court). Our party of 3 came on a Sunday at noon and waited about 20 minutes - not bad for a trending SF brunch place. The service is more similar to a cafe/food court than a traditional restaurant - you order at the checkout counter and find an empty table, but there is still table service. We ordered one of every item from the build-your-own-brunch menu. Their preserved fish items were excellent - I highly recommend the curried pickled herring, along with the smoked McFarlands Springs trout salad. Their breads are also interesting to try. Otherwise, the remaining items were underwhelming breakfast fare - parfait, simple salads, scrambled eggs, etc. **The menu changes frequently, so these may or not be relevant** In terms of ambiance, the interior is a simple, cozy coffee shop with Ikea-adjacent decor. The outside, however, doesn't have any heating lamps, and could definitely do with more protection from the elements. Overall, this location is a great opportunity to explore Scandinavian food outside of Ikea, and has excellent bread and pickled fish, but the majority of the brunch fare is disappointing given the hype. I've been trying to branch out to other types of cuisines recently since the SF food scene feels pretty dominated by the same types of places, so when I found out about the Kantine and saw that it was Scandinavian food I wanted to give it a try. They make most of their menu from scratch using sustainable, seasonal ingredients which was a big draw for me. I met up with a friend for Sunday brunch at 10am and there were ~6 parties in front of us. You're supposed to wait in line to place your order first, then grab a table. The line moved unexpectedly fast and we were a little caught off guard when it was our turn to order, so I'd recommend doing a bit of research ahead of time just so you don't panic order like we did. FOOD - Build-Your-Own-Brunch with 7 items ($20) - We got the brunch board with danish sprouted rye bread, soft scrambled eggs, bacon, trout salad, herring, housemade yogurt, and beetroot hummus. Pass: Sprouted rye bread, scrambled eggs, and bacon. They were all pretty mediocre and though I understand the bacon was made from scratch it was really underseasoned. Smash: The trout salad is a must get, perfectly seasoned with a smoky aftertaste. My friend was a huge fan of the herring though I found it to be a little too sweet. The beetroot hummus was also amazing; I'd try to order the Swedish flatbread next time to dip in this instead of the sprouted rye bread. - Open-faced smoked chicken salad sandwich ($11) - Everything "smoked" on their menu is executed super well. They included crispy chicken skins on top of the sandwich which was a nice textural surprise when you bite in. LOCATION Conveniently located a short walk away from the Church muni station, or if you drive here there's some metered street parking along Market or a giant Safeway parking lot a block away. OVERALL In a word, this meal felt very clean. The ingredients were fresh and tasty, and there weren't any dishes that left me feeling oily or bloated. I don't think I was blown away by any of the food, and the portion sizes were super small, but if I'm craving a healthy and varied meal and willing to spend some money I'd definitely come back. read more

Do you believe in love at first bite? I fell in love three times! I've had my eye on Kantine for the longest time and took the chance to order pick-up a while back. It took all of my willpower not to order all of their pastries at once. Patience.... The ordering process was easy, we ordered through DoorDash. The venue is small and very clean and organized. The staff at that time were very friendly and sweet. Here's what we ordered: Cardamom Morning Bun - Really delightful, a well-made Morning Bun in every sense. Caramelized, sugared, buttery layers. Uniquely spiced due to the cardamom, complete with a tender center. Tebirkes - Though not necessarily an almond croissant, it was very much akin to one and is arguably the best version I've had anywhere. Not too sweet and quite addicting. Grovbirkes Sandwich - So difficult to photograph, I did not have the patience. I chose to add both ham and cheese to this egg sandwich and it was perfection. So buttery, super flavorful. Rather heavy, I could only eat half and felt like taking a nap afterward. But I had no problem eating the rest later that day. So good, wishing I had one right now. Overall, great experience. The cashier recommended the Sprouted Danish Rye so I'll come back and try that one next time but satisfied with this bread choice. 2. homemade yogurt with granola and compote Almost didn't get this lol but turned out to be the best finish to the meal. Scandinavian meatballs with grainy mustard sauce - $1 supplement Maybe my favorite. The meatball's egg yolk (or whatever binder they used) ratio was perfect, making this oh so springy. The sauce was a mix of grainy mustard and some white sauce (yogurt? creme fraiche?) that was perfect for these meatballs. 5. Smoked McFarland Spring trout salad with capers and dill -$3 supplement Perfect flavor especially the salt content. Capers there must have been chopped finely because they were not overpowering. Lovely paired with the bread. I also had a bite of my friend's Mushroom Kale bowl which was so fresh and tangy. It's a big serving at $12 and comes with leafy kale, mushrooms, a soft boiled egg, kamut, walnuts, and a walnut vinaigrette. I don't usually like kale but I liked this bowl. What a great brunch spot! I was craving brunch food but wanted some different from the typical benedicts/pancakes that always put me into a food coma...and this place was perfect! I got opted for the 5 item Build-Your-Own-Brunch option for $16 (+$2-3 for select meat options): - Danish sprouted rye bread (4/5): Comes with 2 slices and butter on the side. I enjoyed the texture and how dense the slices were. - Runny organic egg (5/5): This was probably the softest and most tender egg I've ever eaten! The creamy spinach was soupy and added just enough flavor without overpowering the egg. - Smoked McFarland Springs trout salad (5/5): I almost didn't order this because the description on the menu listed capers, which I dislike. But luckily I was able to just pick the capers off from the top of the trout salad. Definitely recommend ordering this! It's super flavorful and tasty. - Housemade yogurt w/ granola and compote (5/5): I also almost didn't order this because I naively assumed it wouldn't be much different from grocery store yogurt. But wow this was so good! If you've never had housemade yogurt before, give this a try. It tasted so fresh/slightly tart, and the texture of the toppings worked so well with it. - Carrot salad with avocados (4.5/5): This seemed to be a seasonal item. It was light and refreshing yet flavorful with hints of honey. I'd order this again! My partner got a Grovberkes sandwich with ham and havarti in a croissant (3.5/5). I'm happy with what we got at Kantine. The food was surprisingly familiar and felt like a typical brunch in a different format. Highly recommend the porridge as it's what I crave in the mornings now. The flatbread and provided butter was also exceptional. Everything else was standard. read more
