This place is pretty legit. Great tasting curries and I assume other items, too, as my friend was beyond pleased after finishing his Salmon meal. The price isn't bad, either. I guess my only reservation is ordering vegan, which made me feel like a pain in the behind. There were only two "vegan curries" (red and pumpkin), and for the pumpkin you sub the shrimp for tofu and request no fish oil...so yea, I felt like the difficult customer upon ordering. Nonetheless, the curry I ate (I ended up ordering the pumpkin, with the substitutions listed previously) was delicious from beginning to end, no complaints whatsoever. I didn't even mind the spice (they make their curries SPICY), and that is saying a great deal from someone that cringes at the thought of jalapeños. Ordered for pick up tonight and I've gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Ordered beef pad seew, crispy shrimp, BBQ short ribs & the crying tiger. The pad se ew was ok, a little bland for my taste but I guess it's better to add on more sauce than having it be too salty. The crispy shrimp was a first, I liked that they used real shrimp. Another great Thai place in the Valley!! score! So when I lived in Encino, my sister and I used to go to Kao Hom in Lake Balboa. but moving to Sherman Oaks, we decided to spread our wings and find some places closer to home. Through the yelp's wonderful search engine, we were able to find Kao cafe as well as browse the menu. Since I was driving home, my sister called in the order and I picked it up. We ordered some tum yum shrimp soup, pad thai shrimp, crispy calamari, and an order of white rice. They said the order would be 20 min. I was 15 min away, but that was fine. I ended up getting there early and 2 of the dishes were not done yet. I paid for the order totaling around $30. The location itself is small, but it was not busy. it is located right next to the subway on the corner in one of those blink and you'll miss it places. There is parking in the back, which is probably ridiculous during the day, but at night was really easy. The food turned out to be really good. I loved the pad thai. The calamari was not my favorite. I think it was the breading/batter they used. and the tom yum soup was wonderful. I definitely think I have a new Thai spot in Sherman Oaks!!! read more

This is a great take out place. For the prices you get really good Thai food. The only drawback is their hours. They don't open until 5pm on Saturdays. I am usually looking to order sooner so I have to find somewhere else to order. I usually order yellow curry w a protein and the Lemongrass soup never disappoints! This is a great place for some great local Thai food. They have great spicy noodles, beef salads, as well as the standard Thai cusine made the right way to full taste heaven. The desserts will help you finish up the meals as you can have a varity to choose from. Service is great as their staff will take care of you. A co worker wanted to go and picked us up some food while we were working last night. First off the Thai "street" name is just an intriguing moniker... nothing more. Not much of a street feel to the place or food. ---------------- THE FOOD ---------------- Normally I go the PAD SEE EW route but I was in the mood to try something new and a coupla ppl on here mentioned the "Pepper Garlic Chicken" so I went that route and added the FRIED BANANA w/CHOCOLATE. The Pepper Garlic chicken was so disappointing. Small serving size, more broccoli than chicken. The chicken tasted like a plastic-cardboard-styrofoam blend. The little chopped pieces of garlic were good and the pepper sauce was okay... but the chicks. Was terrible. Another reviewer on here raves about "the Fried Banana with Chocolate & Ice Cream." My coworker was told that it doesn't come with ice cream (burn) so all I go was 2 bananas chopped in 1/2, fried with some chocolate sauce on the side. It tasted horrible. Bananas were sour... have a feeling they were brown possibly black bananas. The syrup was bootleg... how hard is it to put some Hershey's... especially when they're only giving u a 1/2 ounce. Last off... I ended up going to 7-Eleven to buy some Hagen Daas vanilla bean ice cream to dip my last 2 fried bananas in... not much better. My 7-Eleven ice cream was the highlight of the meal. This place has the feel of a nice family run Thai restaurant with good food. It has a pretty open kitchen and I swear it looked like a Thai grandmother was doing all the cooking. The way the staff interacted with her and each other, it felt like a family who was making good food in Thailand had come over to LA and opened up a place based on their family recipes! Many of the menu items are similar to what you see in a lot of other Thai restaurants, (Pad Thai, Prik King, etc). The name says it is Thai Street Food, which I didn't really see, but that is probably my ignorance of what Thai street food actually is. Regardless, the dishes we did have had great flavors. We had the steamed dumplings as an appetizer and they came out fresh and with that, how do I say it, healthy flavor. Like all the ingredients were straight from a garden. I was stuck deciding between the Tiger Crying and the Spicy Fried Rice with beef, and the waitress recommended the Spicy Fried Rice as one of her favorites. I have to agree, it was pretty amazing! It was also a good enough portion that I was able to take enough home for some lunch the next day. For desert we had the fried banana with ice cream. This is unbelievably good, and I am not a big desert person. The banana was sweet and just a little warm even though it was wrapped in something similar to wonton wrappers then fried. It was sliced into fourths, arranged cut side down, drizzled with chocolate syrup, and sprinkled with cocoa powder. There was also a large scoop of vanilla ice cream next to it with whip cream on top. I am looking forward to getting another one of those on the next trip! I can't speak to parking as I live within walking distance, but I am guessing it is tough since it sits on Ventura Blvd. But when is parking in LA not a challenge? Two coworkers and myself went out to pick up our lunch order. I'll keep it short and say our lunch order was botched. We had the sides missing that went along with our lunches and one order was completely wrong. Granted we should have personal double checked the order before leaving. The best part is after driving 20 minutes and finding out our order was completely wrong we called to have our order corrected and to our surprise we had been told to drive back that day for what was missing which I would add would be an inconvenience. I recently had Kao Cafe cater for a birthday dinner party at my place. The Kao Cafe team worked with me in getting my menu specialized for my special day. I ordered: Papaya Salad with Shrimp, BBQ Chicken, Garlic Green Beans with Tofu, Chicken Pad See Ew, and Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. They delivered the order on time, made sure to include all condiments, and utensils. The price was reasonable and portions were generous for a dinner party of 10 hungry adults. Small place, could be missed while driving by. I came here about 2 weeks ago with my aunt and cousin. Service was great. The lady that was waiting on us, was friendly and had a great smile, very attentive too. It was so inviting. Food was tasty and once we ordered we got our order pretty fast. Lunch specials are filling and the portion is a pretty good size. If you sit towards the back the Place is not too lit, it's a bit on the darker side even though light comes in through the front glass windows. Parking is pretty bad. It is a small lot in the back with very few spots. I parked in the back and the spots are small. Not clear exactly which spots are the restaurant or for the other businesses but I was worried my car would be towed. They do have parking meters out front or in the side street, if you get lucky. read more

Another lunch spot I'm trying out for the first time. I had a craving for Thai food and did some research on Yelp. So glad I came across this place. I ordered beef broccoli and shrimp stix (appetizers) and Thai iced tea. My only complaint is the beef broccoli didn't come with rice, but it was my fault for not calling and looking over the menu carefully. I ordered from the Eat24 App again which is very convenient and helpful. Overall the food was really good. I'll order from here again. I'll be more prepared before ordering, for sure. read more

Got the Soft Shell Crab in Penang Curry. I asked about wheat-free modifications and the server was quite happy to accommodate by telling the kitchen not to use the flour batter for the crab. Instead the crab was just deep fried. Two small crabs in the dish. The shells were still a bit tough, making indigestion a concern... but still really good dish. The penang curry was perfect with the coconut creaminess. The next time I came here I got the Pumpkin Shrimp Curry. Again the curry sauce was great. There were actual pumpkin slices and the flavors melded quite wonderfully. Shrimp was slightly tough from being overcooked, but all all wonderful dish I would get again. Both times I asked for garlic fried rice with my curries. Next time I think I'd opt for white or brown rice since the strong (but delicious) garlic flavor masked a bit of the curry sauce flavor I would have liked to savor more. Thai tea here is made way too sweet, but it's still good. Next time I shall ask if they adjust the amount of sugar added. Service here is quite good! The server comes to check on you periodically without being obtrusive. Small restaurant, but it wasn't crowded either times I went (Monday night, Friday night). I've been here twice and I really liked what I ordered both times. My bf always gets their Cashew Chicken and I've tried the Pineapple Rice and their coconut soup (Tom Kha Gai). I think the mark of any good Thai Restaurant is the soup and I was very pleased with their version. It was very flavorful though a little lacking on the ginger...but still good overall. The portions are very generous and the prices are reasonable. Another added bonus is that their Thai iced tea is not only delicious but comes in a decent size glass too. I hate that most Thai places put their iced tea in little glasses...but not here! The place is small so it can be a problem if you come during a busy time. The service is good and everyone is nice and friendly. Other than parking being a pain you can't go wrong with this place for good food at good prices. This is a good little Thai joint on the western edge of the Ventura strip in Sherman Oaks. Now, when I say little...this place is seriously little. Seating is limited to about 30 to my guestimate, but it's definitely not a place to go for a big party as the physical space is limiting. With that said though, the food at this place is pretty straight forward and on par with those stand outs in Thai alley or Thai Town. The one thing that separates this place from those is the food feels a tad bit healthier than those and I think that's evident in their preparation. Of course, doubters will say that this place isn't authentic, but aside from their healthy preparation the flavor is pretty much the same. I will note that you go here for its curries and not it's pad thai. The pad thai is good, but I've had better. If you want good pad thai, go to Krua Thai and you'll experience good pad thai, but if you want good and flavorful curries, this is definitely a place you should try if not frequent. I will say with everything said though, this isn't a destination type of location, rather a great neighborhood joint that's open late, so anyone that lives in the Sherman Oaks area or happens to be driving through...this is definitely one place you'll want to save on your GPS device. read more
