Best Filipino food in the city. We drove all the way from South Austin just to eat here. My kids love it!! The halo halo is awesome!!

We're out of towners from Houston, and somehow craved Filipino food. So when we were in Austin, I wasn't sure what to expect. This place happened to be just a few minutes from our hotel and I'm really glad we gave it a shot. First off, it's very mom-and-pop -- no frills, straight to the point, and focused on the food. I did think it was interesting that they also operate as a Chinese restaurant, but honestly, it's probably a smart move given the area. More ways to bring people in the door. The staff were incredibly friendly. It genuinely felt like being back in the Philippines. They were also super accommodating with our toddler, which always earns bonus points from me. We ordered the pansit, sizzling sisig, and sizzling chicken BBQ and all three were delicious. The pansit was savory and loaded with veggies and shrimp. The sisig was nicely peppery with just the right amount of spice. The sizzling chicken BBQ was such a great twist on the classic -- I might actually prefer it this way over skewers. It was easier to eat and came with extra sauce to drizzle over rice. Even though we were stuffed and already had to-go boxes, we couldn't skip halo-halo. It was the perfect ending -- refreshing, sweet, and exactly what we needed. If I lived here, I'd honestly be a regular. I've been here twice for dinner and both times ordered their sizzling pork sisig which does not disappoint in the "sizzling" department. It's a nice and hefty portion and also comes with either steamed or fried rice. I was a little disappointed that they ran out of halo halo the last time I went - I really enjoyed it the one time I tried it and clearly it's popular if it ran out. Service is extremely friendly upon entering and throughout the meal. The food came out quick and piping hot, and they were ready with the to-go containers for our leftovers. Inside is a cozy feel and we were seated at a half booth table. The location itself is located in a plaza and parking was not an issue either time I went. read more

Filipino food in Austin is about as hard to find as, well, quite literally anything. Luckily, we found Kapatad, and are very glad we did. Parking is easy to find with spots right out front and from the moment you step in you can feel the authenticity. In a city desperately lacking southeast Asian food, this was a huge breath of fresh air. We ordered for pickup and the process for it was very smooth. By the time we got back to our place we were extremely excited to dive in and try it out. This place offers a lot of Filipino classics so we went with the pork adobo, lumpia, and fried rice. The pork adobo was amazing. The pork was seasoned so well with a hint of kick and the adobo being so savory, mixing well with the potatoes. Standout dish and competes with the best adobos we've had at other restaurants. The lumpia was also very good. Very long lumpia with a nice filling and crunch to the roll. It was so good we didn't even bother with the dipping sauce. Lastly, the fried rice was also good. Unlike typical fried rice it didn't have the day old hardness and had a nice soft seasoning to it. We also got white rice as a side and it was good, pretty standard. All in all, Kapatad deserves a lot of recognition. It is the most authentic, and best, Filipino food we have had in Texas. To be honest, it's better than a lot of spots in NYC or the Bay. It's always nice to have spots like this keeping rich flavors and tradition alive. I've been meaning to try this place for a while and the opportunity arose this past weekend to go with a friend visiting from out of town. Their hours online and in store were different so we rushed to get there thinking they were closing at 7pm but they were open until 8pm. I tried the beef kare kare, which was good but not spicy. They told me I could add the chili sauce on the table, which I did, but even that wasn't that spicy. My friend ordered the crispy tofu with broccoli, which he enjoyed. He ordered some items to go and I also ordered a beef & shrimp kung pao to go. They told me their max spice level was 3 so I asked for that on the kung pao dish along with asking them to take out bell peppers which they said they could do. Unfortunately, when I opened the to-go container the next day to eat it there were many red & green bell peppers in it and if their max was 3 spicy level, it was/is still not very spicy as I ate some of it after taking the time to pick out the bell peppers. We went here for lunch because it was recommended. Upon entering, they asked if we had reservations. I told them no. They were able to seat us right away. We ordered from both their menu and daily specials. All the food was so delicious. The halo halo was served in a plastic tub and could be shared with at least 2 people. The only gripe I have is that they charged a lot for extra rice. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I would prefer ordering takeout so I won't get charged for extra rice. read more

One of the best ways to celebrate Filipino American History month is to come here in Kapatad! My sons visited from out of town and NY and this feels like home. Their recipe remains authentic and I love that they kept the traditional ways for us! We had crispy pata. Omg and the sisig! The pork sisig had a strong lime flavor, making it taste more like a Mexican fusion dish. The dish had a variety of textures, came with one scoop of rice, and had a generous portion of pork sisig. If you enjoy eating meat and appreciate a variety of textures--like lean cuts, tendon, and a bit of fat--this restaurant is definitely worth checking out. I tried three dishes: the Chicken Pancit, Crispy Pata, and Beef Caldereta. All of them were delicious. The Chicken Pancit was flavorful with tender meat, and the noodles were well-seasoned. I ordered the medium-sized Crispy Pata, and the portion was perfect for one person. The skin had a satisfying crunch without being too hard, and the tendon inside was incredibly tasty. It came with shredded daikon and carrots pickled in ginger juice (similar to the pickled ginger served with sushi), along with a cup of vinegar mixed with chopped onions. These paired really well with the rich pork. On a previous visit, they also included a piece of pickled pineapple with the vegetables, which was a nice, flavorful touch. The Beef Caldereta is another standout. The beef was juicy and incredibly tender, while the carrots and potatoes were slightly crunchy, offering a nice contrast. The dish had a subtle sourness that made it especially appetizing. I'd definitely go back for these three dishes and would love to try more from their menu. Would recommend making a reservation for big groups but even though our 15-people group walked in, we were able to get seating pretty quickly for lunch. I don't normally have a lot of Filipino food so not sure what is most popular but we got the pork pancit, beef kare kare, pork sisig with egg, pork adobo, and egg rolls. I've been to Kapatad a couple times now and have enjoyed the food and the servers are really friendly. I'm not an expert on Filipino food, but it seems authentic and tasty though some dishes I enjoyed more than others. I enjoyed the sisig, lumpiang, and Bicol express in particular while the bbq chicken/pork and calamari were more standard and I didn't like the kare kare as much personally. The entrees come with rice or fried rice and the fried rice doesn't cost extra which is awesome. We also had the halo halo for dessert last time which was good. If you're craving a true taste of the Philippines, Kapatad is the spot to hit. This place is a hidden gem that brings back memories to when I was visiting the Phillipines. I came here with friends and tried a lot of items, and I left completely stuffed and satisfied. Sisig is one of my favorite Filipino dishes. This was hands-down the highlight; served on a sizzling plate with an egg on top, it had just the right balance of savory, tangy, and spicy. A squeeze of calamansi to finish, and I could just eat this with rice all day The lechon came out with crispy skin and juicy meat. Dip it in the sauce and go to town. The lumpia was a favorite, it was flavorful and seasoned perfectly, and the sweet chili sauce was great for dipping. A solid starter. The kare-kare was rich, creamy, and peanut saucey with meat that melts in your mouth. They don't skimp on the vegetables either--eggplant, string beans, bok choy all came together beautifully. And yes, bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) is served on the side, as it should be. One of my favorites was the halo-halo. It was a great end to the meal. It had everything: ube ice cream, leche flan, sweet beans, jellies, and shaved ice. A perfect way to cool off on a hot Texas day and definitely large enough to share. The service was warm and welcoming, and you can tell this place is run with heart. Filipino hospitality + amazing food = a must-visit spot in Austin. The Lumpiang Shanghai were quite addictive, with a nice crispy, crunchy exterior, and a soft, flavorful pork-based interior. I'm sure I smelled the inside several times, really nice with and without the sweet and sour sauce accompanying it. The Beef Kare Kare was clearly made with braised beef heel, definitely a soft bite, and when combined with the peanut sauce, I'd say it reminded me of a nice tender lengua, though more lean of course. Also, the tripe in there was equally tender, soft enough that you might miss its presence. Seems like they substituted boy choy in place of nappa, but that worked just fine. The Palabok had great flavor and texture. Thin rice noodles lounging in a garlicky pork-shrimp-seafood sauce, with shrimp, squid, ground pork, a quartered soft boiled egg, chicharrones, and scallions allows your taste buds to savor the flavors while you feel the contrasting crispy fried pork skin bits against those soft noodles. I think there was also some dried shrimp and fish in there. Pineapple Ice: Thirst quenching and not overly sweetened iced pineapple juice. Return again, for the friendly staff, efficient kitchen output, amusing bathroom signs, ease of QR code checkout, pretty good portion sizes, and easy parking situation. Came here with a large group on Friday evening. We arrived at 6:30, and were told that the last order for the kitchen is at 6:45pm (they list their closing time as 8pm on Yelp). So, we felt rushed to place our orders (almost exclusively from the Filipino specialties portion of the menu). The food came out quickly. I noticed that some of the dishes were sized / served to be shared family-style, while other items from the same category of the menu were appropriate for a single person's meal. This definitely requires a diner to know what they're ordering, unless they want to and up with a plate of just meat. The server was very attentive and kept bringing out water bottles, and taking the dishes away. Although the frequency with which he was asking for empty dishes made us feel rushed and unwelcome. When we got up to leave at approximately 7:45pm. We found the door to the restaurant was locked! There were other groups of customers who were also still eating in the restaurant (and, closing time, remember, is listed as 8 pm). The locking of the front door while patrons are still inside a restaurant is a fire-hazard, in my opinion. So, this realization only reinforced the feeling of being rushed to leave. The food was delicious. We weren't very hungry and because we ordered the same number of dishes as people, plus some appetizers, we ended up with leftovers. I particularly enjoyed the Pancit Bihon and the Caldereta. The Lechon Kawali was also delicious, but it definitely needed some veggies on the side to balance all the fatty pork belly. read more

KAPATAD is a family owned restaurant serving up some of Austins greatest dishes. A humble Filipino establishment run by some of the friendliest people I've ever met. My experience here was so good and they set the bar so high that I'm worried I won't find another Filipino restaurant that meets this level of quality. We had their Sizzling Pork Sisig (sizzling chopped pork and liver), Pancit Bihon (Philippine style vermicelli), Lechon (fried pork), and their Lumpia (egg rolls). All their dishes had so much flavor, full of aromatics, and each dish was well balanced, able to stand on their own. But if I had to pick my favorite, it was definitely the Sizzling Pork Sisig. It hit all the notes, savory, spicy, fatty, but balanced with citrusy notes, it was just so good, a MUST try. I don't even like liver normally btw, there was just so much flavor in each bite. We also had their Leche Flan for dessert and peach ice tea. Great way to finish off the meal. Restaurant is located in a small strip mall and across a soccer field. They offer Pampanga and Chinese cuisine. Pampanga is a region in the Philippines known for their food. We arrived mid-afternoon and was not crowded. The walls were decorated with with a lot interesting things to read and enjoy. We ordered the sisig (chopped pork on hot plate), crispy pata (fried pork leg) and beef caledareta (stewed beef). Sisig has a kick in a good way. Same for the beef caledareta. Both were very tasty and beef was very tender. Pork hock had crispy skin and not too much fat. Just the way I like it. Another dish they are well known for is Beef Kare Kare. Unfortunately, they ran out when we got there. Have to try it next time we go back. Heard from a friend this is one of the few sit down Filipino restaurant in the Austin area. There are empty dishes as well so you can order main courses and share. We ordered the lumpia as an appetizer. The Philapino Lumpia is always delicious, and it was also just as delicious here as well. For our main dishes, we had the Pork Sisig that is served on a hot plate, thus sizzling. We also had the pancit, noodles, and veggies. Then we shared between 2 of us. There was enough food left over for another whole meal to take home. Absolutely OUTSTANDING Filipino food here. * * * Note that Filipino is at best 1/3 of the menu. Americans won't eat at a restaurant that has only eight or nine things on the menu ... Unless that restaurant is Cane's Chicken Fingers. At Cane's the small menu is part of the joke. Management also worries that Americans won't eat here because the idea of Filipino food is too weird. * * * Management actually read the market correctly. Kapatad is filled with Filipino customers eating off the Filipino side of the menu. Besides ourselves, there was only one other table with Anglos. Kapatad has not gotten on to the Austin Chronicle/Eater Austin Yuppie food attention list. Far West does not have a great history of supporting ethnic food. Biderman's does well because of the nearby Dell Center. Saffron has lasted far longer than I thought it would. But generally, Far West is the Boulevard Bar and Starbucks. * * * But the loyal Filipino crowd has kept Kapatad alive. Which is a very very good thing. I have only eaten in five or six Filipino restaurants in my life - But Kapatad is by far the best. * * * Filipino food is carnivorous food. Vegetarians will be looking at the Chinese side of the menu. Filipino veggie dishes exist (including noodles and tofu) ... But meat is what Kapatad does. Servings are MASSIVE. The plan is for a whole family to come in and order one dish. Everyone in the family gets their plate of rice. Then everyone divides up the meat dish in the middle. The meat dish is very large, very rich and very very good. Think Thanksgiving Dinner with a Roast Turkey on the platter in front of the entire family and you get the basic idea. My giant platter was a pork shank. Four people could have eaten that pork shank if they were eating it on rice. And they would have eaten very very well. Roast Pork Shank is NOT an easy dish to make. It is bony and it is uneven so getting everything to cook evenly is a huge issue. Plus the shank had the most exquisite and wonderful crispy char for the skin. Pork shank is skin heavy and meat light --- so skin quality is life and death. This was Pork Skin for the Gods!. The Shank itself has garlic and ginger roasted on top of it. But the house serves a fantastic marinade to go on top of the pork. The shank is fantastic all by itself - but is absolutely to die for with the sauce on top. I was in the 78th circle of heaven. I was also in the 78th circle of Personal Enlargement ... and I had only eaten 1/4 of my shank. People who have read my other reviews already know ... I am a big eater. I have polished off whole pork knuckles twice, once in Prague and once in Stockholm. So when I tell you I took home most of the utterly divine pork shank, that tells you a lot. * * * Bring carnivores. Bring a whole family of carnivores. But then ... actually most of the Filipino tables had whole families. And most of those tables only had one or two dishes on the table.
