Unless that restaurant is Cane's Chicken Fingers. At Cane's the small menu is part of the joke. Management also worries that Americans won't eat here because the idea of Filipino food is too weird. * * * Management actually read the market correctly. Kapatad is filled with Filipino customers eating off the Filipino side of the menu. Besides ourselves, there was only one other table with Anglos. Kapatad has not gotten on to the Austin Chronicle/Eater Austin Yuppie food attention list. Far West does not have a great history of supporting ethnic food. Biderman's does well because of the nearby Dell Center. Saffron has lasted far longer than I thought it would. But generally, Far West is the Boulevard Bar and Starbucks. * * * But the loyal Filipino crowd has kept Kapatad alive. Which is a very very good thing. I have only eaten in five or six Filipino restaurants in my life - But Kapatad is by far the best. * * * Filipino food is carnivorous food. Vegetarians will be looking at the Chinese side of the menu. Filipino veggie dishes exist (including noodles and tofu) ... But meat is what Kapatad does. Servings are MASSIVE. The plan is for a whole family to come in and order one dish. Everyone in the family gets their plate of rice. Then everyone divides up the meat dish in the middle. The meat dish is very large, very rich and very very good. Think Thanksgiving Dinner with a Roast Turkey on the platter in front of the entire family and you get the basic idea. My giant platter was a pork shank. Four people could have eaten that pork shank if they were eating it on rice. And they would have eaten very very well. Roast Pork Shank is NOT an easy dish to make. It is bony and it is uneven so getting everything to cook evenly is a huge issue. Plus the shank had the most exquisite and wonderful crispy char for the skin. Pork shank is skin heavy and meat light --- so skin quality is life and death. This was Pork Skin for the Gods!. The Shank itself has garlic and ginger roasted on top of it. But the house serves a fantastic marinade to go on top of the pork. The shank is fantastic all by itself - but is absolutely to die for with the sauce on top. I was in the 78th circle of heaven. I was also in the 78th circle of Personal Enlargement ... and I had only eaten 1/4 of my shank. People who have read my other reviews already know ... I am a big eater. I have polished off whole pork knuckles twice, once in Prague and once in Stockholm. So when I tell you I took home most of the utterly divine pork shank, that tells you a lot. * * * Bring carnivores. Bring a whole family of carnivores. I decided to try Filipino food, and I am glad I went to Kapatad. They set a high standard for others to meet. I started with a small Hot and Sour Soup. It was so good. I wish this soup were filling, I could make a meal of it. I then had the Lechon Kawali for the main course with steamed rice as a side. The fried pork had a crunchy skin, but the meat was soft and tender, and a slightly sweet sauce was served on the side to dip it in. I went in the evening, so I don't know if the dinner portion is larger, but the portion was huge. I can't get over the flavor of this item. The sauce is made in-house. You know it's gonna be good when it's fully crowded at lunchtime and most of the customers are Filipino. We started with pineapple ice, which had pineapple juice, crushed ice, and strawberry syrup. Tasty! I ordered the Crispy Pata which was delicious! Normally it comes out whole but we asked for it chopped. The dishes are good portions so you can eat it family-style. Then we finished with the Halo Halo (seems like they run out quickly) It was delicious, but I will note that it was a little different than other places I've had it before (I'm used to it with more beans and jellies). I knew this place was going to hit because, besides my friend and I, all of the patrons were Filipino families. Service was incredibly warm and friendly. They also served our food quickly. We ordered lechon and spicy green beans, as well as complimentary rice and garlic fried rice. The lechon was super crispy, yet not oily. It can get a bit heavy, so the side of pickled vegetables and sweet sauce helps to cut the grease. I also loved the sweet, spicy, and savory sauce from the green beans. Was visiting Austin from Houston and saw their profile on yelp. Wanted to try and compare Filipino fare there vs Houston and ordered crispy fish in coconut sauce, bean sprout eggrolls, sizzling pork , mixed vegetables with pork sauteed in shrimp paste, then flan for dessert. Everything was well made and flavorful. The fish was crispy with lots of creamy sauce, the flan was really creamy and you can tell they used a ton of eggyolks to make it. My only wish was that they had bigger portions . The place itself was homey and service was prompt and friendly. Great place to go for Filipino cuisine. This is my kind of place. Great food, representing a unique cuisine, at reasonable prices. We only had room in our party of two to try two things, the beef kare-kare (tender beef, eggplant, and savory peanut sauce) and crispy pata (succulent pork shank with crispy skin.) However, everyone on Yelp was raving about it so I had to try it for myself. Let me just say that I do not regret coming to this place at all. As soon as we stopped through the doors, we were immediately greeted by a friendly host, and we were promptly seated. My part of 2 ordered Lumpiang Shanghai (6 pieces and it came with rice), sizzling pork sisig, and beef kare kare. A small side of shrimp paste came with the beef kare kare. It was salty, but it balanced the hearty flavor of the beef kare kare. They also gave us the option to pick white rice, fried rice, or brown rice, and we chose fried rice. Their vegetable fried rice had garlic in it and it was delicious and unique. This Filipino fried rice is not like your typical Chinese fried rice. We wanted to their buko pandan but it was sold out. I haven't been to many Filipino restaurants, but Kapatad is one of my favorites. We ordered: Combo Pancit Bihon - a classic dish! It was really well seasoned and had a good amount of meat. Pork Sisig - This dish was a favorite for most of my friends so I definitely recommend. Especially with the lime on top, it really brings the dish to a new level! Tokwa't Baboy - Basically just fried tofu and pork, this dish was so good! The pork retains a lot of its fat so it isn't dry or hard. And it comes with a vinegary sauce that helps cut through all the grease. Beef Kare Kare - If you're a big peanut butter fan, you will love this dish! It's pretty strong but it's also very rich and deep. It comes with a shrimp paste that only enhances that and is great on top of rice. Pork Adobo - This is the dish that was my personal favorite. Honestly, the meat could have been a little bit more tender but I didn't really care because that sauce is addicting. Buko Pandan - not only is it super eye catching, but this dessert is pretty good!! Personally it was a bit too sweet for me, I think one cup is good for three people. The only FIlipino restaurant I trust in Austin. Their name Kapatad is derived from the Tagalog word "kapatid" meaning "sibling" and their food certainly makes me think of family when I'm feeling homesick. Whether I'm ordering takeout or dining in, I know the food will be delicious and comforting. My regular rotation consists of: Lechon Kawali (5/5) - Perfectly crispy and consistently has the right meat-to-fat ratio. Not sure if their Mang Tomas sauce is homemade, the texture is slightly thinner but tastes better! Kare Kare (4/5) - Richly flavored, easier, and better than making it myself. The included bagoong is not my favorite, but I always use my own at home. Pieces of meat aren't the most tender and the dish itself could use more veggies, but I can forgive them since the price point is good. Sago Drink (5/5) - Instant nostalgia of my childhood. Sizzling Pork BBQ (3/5) - May be a bit too sweet for most people's palates and doesn't come on the traditional skewer, so better paired with steamed rice rather than fried rice to balance it out. Lumpia (3/5) - Shaped long and thin, which is different from what I'm used to, but my fiancé loves them! Note: I've never tried their Chinese food, nor do I plan to. This is a pretty decent restaurant. This was my first time going to a Filipino restaurant and I'm glad I gave it a try. The lumpia was really good! The lumpia was hot, fresh, and delicious. I was tempted to order another one. I ordered the Sizzling BBQ Chicken at our server's suggestion. I was very disappointed with the BBQ Chicken. The BBQ Chicken was incredibly bland. It had no flavor and I didn't enjoy eating it at all. Normally, I'm not one to complain to servers if I don't like my food but I disliked the BBQ Chicken so much that I couldn't eat it. Fortunately, the team was kind enough to make things right when I was unhappy with my food. I tried the chicken pancit. The pancit was much better and tasted great when paired with chili oil. My first time trying Filipino food! I got the pancit bihon with shrimp. The dish consists of vermicelli noodles and vegetables (carrots, red pepper, snow peas, cabbage) with a spicy soy sauce. You can choose the level of spice between 1-3, and I thought level 2 was a manageable amount of spice while still bringing in loads of flavor. If you're craving a noodle dish, pancit bihon is a solid option. My partner got the beef kare-kare, which is a beef stew with eggplant, string beans, and baby bok choy in a peanut sauce. It's kind of like a Filipino curry. It comes with a side of rice or noodles. It's also served with a side of bagoong (fermented fish/shrimp paste). The beef was very soft, but we both preferred the taste of the pancit bihon. The kare-kare and especially the bagoong are an acquired taste. read more

My golfing buddy's doctor recommended he try this place out. My buddy and I then set out from San Marcos with another friend to try this place after reading positive reviews. Blessed with two Filipino parents who are/were very good cooks (may dad rest in peace), I have a pretty high bar set for judging Filipino restaurants. I read that the owners of this place hail from Pampanga, the purported culinary capital of the Philippines so that was encouraging. We set out for lunch on a Friday and the place wasn't too busy. The reviews had glowing remarks for the pork sisig and the beef kare kare as well as their crispy pata and lechon kawali. I had my golfing friends over for dinner before and cooked chicken adobo, beef kaldereta and Filipino pork barbeque for them (they loved the pork BBQ and beef kaldereta), so I wanted them to try something different. We ordered lumpias as appetizers and for entrees, we ordered pork sisig, beef kare kare and pancit. Rice (we chose steamed rice) was served with our meal. The lumpias were good...decent flavor served in 6 pieces with a sweet dipping sauce. Would've preferred something like a sweet chili sauce instead, however. The sisig (ordered egg with it) was served on a sizzling plate...and lime wedges instead of calamansi which was disappointing. Nevertheless, I was eager to try it. It tasted fine but it didn't quite match the taste and eye-raising flavor I remember when I first tried sisig in Pampanga when I was there as part of a US Army contingent for the multi-national military exercise known as Balikatan, over a decade ago. The beef kare kare had a surprisingly good flavor. My mom cooks good kare kare that I typically don't eat, but ordered it so my friends can sample something different. About the only thing I didn't like about it was the cut of beef...it was brisket and thought it was a bit gristly. I understand that, traditionally, it's prepared with ox tail but I would've preferred a better cut of meat. The pancit was prepared very well, well seasoned but not salty...although once again, it was served with lime wedges instead of calamansi. To top our meal off, I ordered halo halo which everyone loved! Entree portions were quite generous and we even had some leftovers for my friend to take home and share with his wife. All in all, a good impression, with my sisig experience notwithstanding. Perhaps for our next visit we'll try the crispy pata or lechon kawali...and perhaps they'll be able to source some calamansi for a more authentic Filipino flavor. We ordered the Lumpiang Shanghai, the Sizzling Sisig, and the Crispy Pata. The Lumpiang came out hot and fried perfectly. The filling and the sweet sauce were delicious. The Crispy Pata was everything we hoped for. The skin was super crispy and the meat underneath was both tender and fatty. It came with a sauce as well, but it honestly tastes great by itself. We came for the Pata, but fell in love with the Sisig. Small cubes of lightly fried pork with onions and fat all on a bowl of rice is the ultimate comfort food. The pork was delicious and the onions gave the dish a nice crunch. Add in some lime juice and ground chilies to counterbalance the fattiness, and you got a dish you'll be thinking about for weeks.
