We are a large Armenian family and I was having them over for a birthday celebration. I made a few side dishes but got chicken, rice and vegetables from Kareem. It is very rare to find moist, flavorful chicken anymore, it is always too dry. Kareem's chicken was cooked just right and super flavorful. The rice and vegetables were just as delicious. Run don't walk to Kareem's for family-owned Middle Eastern fare that has lovingly been serving locals for 25+ years. Truth is I've had Kareem's bookmarked for months, since reading about the business on EaterLA. My weekend dinner here did not disappoint! The falafel plate (so crispy and fresh) and chicken bowl were both savory and worth playing on repeat. Added some fresh pita and cilantro-lime hummus and we had a great meal (likely for 3 with those generous portions!). The chicken was moist and seasoned to perfection The hummus was so tasty, and the rice was flavorful. Even the pickle, tomatoe, and onions were yummy. The pita bread was warm and fluffy, and I got extra! Finish it off with the arabic iced coffee. You won't be disappointed. I'm sad to write this because I love the food and have been a returning customer for a while... but it will be my last time as basic hospitality, service and respect were EXTREMELY LACKING here by the owner. As I am someone who strives to treat others with grace, empathy, respect, patience and kindness like how I want to be treated, I instead witnessed great distress when I was choosing to order by the register. I considered other customers behind me and let them go ahead of me in line bur when it was my turn the owner behind the register sharply asked what I wanted. I ordered the falafel plate but had difficulty deciding on the sides as I wanted hummus or babaganoush so I asked for her suggestion. She recommended babaganoush. I then hesitated a bit unsure between that or the salad. Instead of being patient with me and creating a welcoming atmosphere she rebuked and made me feel bad... rudely rushing me to "hurry up there is a long line behind you..." as I was changing my order around. She quickly said just get the salad on the side and I quickly agreed without any more time. I said sorry and I even tipped her despite how rude and inconsiderate the interaction was. That alone left a bad taste in my mouth but I didn't let it bother me. My guest and I went to our table and we were grateful when we got the food. We were kindly served by the waitress and I appreciated her hard work! While I got my food on plates and silverware the rest came in to go boxes for my guest... who I wanted to treat out because he was homeless and in a vulnerable situation. I found that odd that he got a take out box for his order of his chicken salad while I had plates and bowls with a nice presentation. Even our pita breads were in paper bags, leaving them soggy...Was it a mistake? I'm not sure but I didn't want to ask or be entitled; plus we were really hungry. Luckily the food was good and fresh. When we couldn't finish our food and asked for any takeout boxes to the cashier/owner she just blankly stared and without a word pointed at the one small brown takeout box on the counter for us to grab. Ok... sure but we had multiple items and she looked at us with such impatience and begrudgingly went to get us more from the kitchen. It was like she didn't want to serve us or anyone. Everything was a burden and chore was the vibe I got. So again despite how agitated she looked I tried to see it from her shoes and even asked how she was doing or how her day was. Maybe she was having a bad day and I didn't want to make it even worse. So again It was fine. I would have happily served myself if it meant to help the staff! After all this though, the red flags kept rising as I witnessed the owner treat my homeless guest... he had to go use the restroom and accidentally fell asleep for close to an hour because he was under prescribed meds for his illness; it left him sedated. I was worried so I kept knocking the door and heard he was making sounds so he was ok. The owner asked accusingly that he is hogging the bathroom and other guests might need to use it. I tried to reassure her everything is ok, that he is in there alive but just taking extra time and hoped she understood his situation ( not knowing he fell asleep). When he came out he tried to apologize to the owner but was disoriented from dehydration and dropped his cup of water. Instead of being sensitive and patient with him the owner erupted aggressively at him and basically kicked us out and told us to leave even though we didn't do anything. I was calm and peaceful and my guest didn't cause any scene or depict hostility other than accidentally dropping his water and having it spill to the ground. However, the owner for her own reasons and behaviors displayed such lack of sensitivity, humanity, empathy and compassion that I would never go back and support this restaurant. I felt so conflicted trying to assuage the tension as I understood her but she didn't bother to listen or try to understand him. The irony is that I saw other customers walk-in yelling and kids screaming and she wasn't bothered by that but when it came to us she was uncomfortable. Whether it was due to fear, assuming he was dangerous, or had any other stigmas of homeless people, I'm not going to disregard the lack of respect, mercy and justice I encountered and experienced. read more

Literally the best for falafel I've ever had in my LIFE. I've been obsessed for years. Can't find anything better. They know how to make good food here. Especially vegan friendly food! I've tried their plant-based fat kid, falafel Fries, Falafel burger, spicy cauliflower, jalapeño falafels, iconic falafel bowl, and baklava. Every single thing? Bursting with flavor. My favorites are the spicy cauliflower (honestly a must try imho,) the iconic Falafel bowl, and their rolled up baklava. I usually don't see rolled up baklava and I loved them. This is a convenient place to go if you're on the way to Disneyland from my home. I had found this place on yelp and it had amazing reviews. You walk into the restaurant and on the way, there is some nice outdoor seating if you decide to eat in. Since I was going to Disneyland, I did take out and ordered at the counter. I went with Mom's Garlic Chicken wrap, which was around $11. After ordering, it took around 10 minutes to get my food which was pretty quick. I brought it to the parks and bit in to find a flavorful, juicy, garlicy chicken wrap full of crispy vegetables. The garlic was definitely strong, but theres a side of tahini like sauce to balance it out. The size of the wrap was decent, but not overly large. For $11, I would say its a pretty good deal. If it was slightly bigger for $1-$2, i think it wouldve been perfect. Overall, this place was a great restaurant to get a wrap with speedy service and reasonable prices! read more

Pass if you're looking for authentic middle eastern food. Great if you're Vegan! Lost its edge -- now it's just mainstream Mediterranean food centered around catering Vegan options, no need to drive to Anaheim for this food anymore. During my last visit, a tatted-up man came into the patio to sell stolen jewelry, talking in street talk, "hey cuz...you want some"...of course, I wasn't surprised; we're in Anacrime, but anyway on to the food! The bottom-line of the food is quantity over quality. Yes, You read that right. Almost all the dishes seemed to have cut a corner or two. The best parts were the sides: hummus and baba ghanouj -- Kudos for keeping that well made and authentic... Sides: Lentil soup, fries, and Pita chips The lentil soup has great potential, but it was watered down; it should be reworded to lentils with your water bowl! The fries were saturated in oil and what seemed to be Lowry's seasoning unevenly distributed. Some fries were extremely salty, and some bland but even more oily were the pita chips doused in Lowy's seasoning. They were drenched in oil, making them extremely crunchy but fragile, so as you take one bite, the whole chip shatters into a million pieces (Crumbs! GREAT). Main dishes: Chicken & Kefta The chicken was nothing special. In fact, it seemed familiar. The chicken pieces appeared to be chicken tenderloins; you know the frozen chicken from Costco with the light pink on the bag? I saw someone else mentioned this. The chicken is lightly marinated, not cut into chunks. That's why I recognize the funny shapes because they remind me of Picasso's profile art. The kefta was slightly better but dry, dense, and burnt on one side. I've never had it so dense; you could not distinguish the parsley from the meat or the onions. This leads me to think that A -- they're not there, or B -- it was so over-processed in a food processor or blender that it's gone! Either way, both are equally bad. However, the most shocking aspect of the food was the panini grill lines across every piece of meat. At first, I thought they were grill marks, but all of their meat plates looked flattened. Inside you can see a large Panini press next to the deep fryer; Authentic Middle Eastern food is never done in a Panini press. As you all know...It is done over an open fire; better places use charcoal. Falafel -- hyped For something that you are supposedly known for, these were lousy. Authentic falafels are extremely airy, crispy, and light. These were dense and lightly fried with uncooked spots, most likely where they touched each other in the fryer. But what's interesting is that they give them away for free...check-in with Yelp for three free falafels, but be ready to be scrutinized like it's a TSA check! When I showed my phone to the owner, she said, please press the button to mark it as used. I marked it and put my phone away. She said, "I want to see your phone," um, what? She looked serious. OK showed her that I had actually marked the check-in offer. She nodded her head and said OK. Saddening to have such little trust in your customers. Relax, I'm not out to steal falafels from you... in fact, I'm curious as to why they give them away--giving things away for free kills the value of any product. That only works well in the short term; otherwise, it hurts your business. So stop giving them away for free, especially if that's what you're known for; it clearly shows that it's gone on too long. If not, think about the message you send to your customers when they find out that the famous falafels are free. Especially when the quality is going downhill, and the ads are bringing in more people who will take advantage of this deal, they no longer need to buy falafels when they can have three subpar ones for free. If you scroll down through their photo history, you will see the difference between then and now. Being pillars of the authentic little Arabian community that started decades ago, you would think they would want to guard their authenticity and not trade it in. There are way too many restaurants in SoCal that offer far more authentic food than they serve now. I can understand why most of the 5-star reviews think this is authentic -- don't know any better, especially when they are misled by old articles and reputation posters plaster all over the walls and tables. I left with most of my food in a bag, truly saddened that I will not be returning--best of luck on your new business philosophy. read more

Delicious. I highly enjoyed eating at Karen's. Their falafel is super good. I've tried falafel at a bunch of other places and sometimes it's rather disappointing but not here! It's the perfect amount of crunch with a soft center, yum. We had breakfast there. Ordered all the authentic breakfast items like mosabaha, shakshuka, eggs and potatoes etc. Really good, I typically make all these items at home but it was nice to be able to enjoy all of these things without having to do the cooking! Every time I've visited Kareem's the staff has always been so friendly and welcoming. The food is always fresh and so tasty. I get the steak entree with rice and fries. Their cilantro hummus is one of my favorites I've ever had! It also comes with super fresh pita bread which is delicious as well. Being a Middle Eastern it's hard to find good authentic Arabic food especially that taste like moms or grandmas cooking. I was surprised that the plate didn't come with rice however if you pay three dollars extra they'll give you a side of rice. I did get two falafel's which were super yummy crispy and delicious. The chicken was amazing cooked perfectly full of flavor. The rice was also awesome. The baba ghanouj didn't taste as authentic as I would like it to have been and same with the yogurt. The pita bread that came under the rice was much better than the pita bread that came on the side. It's hard for me to give a five stars I'm just biased when it comes to Middle Eastern food. I wish I could give them a 3 1/2 star because the food is pretty good. It is on a little bit on the pricey side. The ambience inside is super cute the vibe inside is amazing the music that they play is awesome they even have a cute patio outside to eat.
