My family had dinner here last weekend. We had an early dinner so parking was plentiful. The interior is clean but non-descript. The service was very good. I was a bit disappointed with the food given the reviews I had read, especially given that the sushi pricing is very expensive. I would give the food an overall 3.5/5 stars. We had: Octopus Crudo (3/5) - It's thinly sliced octopus from a large tentacle so pretty large circular discs. The "issue" is that the citrus flavors are so overpowering you can't tell at all that you're eating octopus. I will say the flavors weren't bad, just overpowering for the octopus. Ceviche - My daughter ordered this and said it was very good; I did not try. Sushi Sampler (10 pieces / $58) as well as a few add-ons including chu-toro, o-toro and ikura - (3.5/5) - Overall the sushi was okay to pretty good. Nothing outstanding imo. I thought the rice lacked flavor, was textually pretty hard. The fish was pretty good. Spicy Soy Ramen (4/5) - Probably the best dish of the night. Not my favorite ramen in Houston but this was a good dish. Overall, again a bit disappointed given the price point but if you put price aside, okay to pretty good food.
Me and a friend stopped by for a quick lunch. Immediately upon being seated, we were greeted by Tai our server. He was very welcoming and assertive. Throughout our interactions he was very vocal about his opinions of the menu and suggestions but could be heard having some disagreements with other tables and staff which was a bit concerning. Our food came out very quickly and was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I have heard since visiting they are more known for other dishes besides sushi so will definitely try these next time.
Nut allergy friendly - The lunch ramen is still safe! As is most of the menu I believe. Parking: Actually quite difficult in the small strip mall lot. Gets very busy during lunch and you might have to wait for someone to come out. Yep, they're all here for Kata. Time to Entree: 7 Minutes We arrived at 1PM on a Friday afternoon without a reservation and got quoted a 20 minute wait for 2 people. That ended up being around 9 minutes wait. Service for the lunch tonkatsu ramen was quick and efficient. The ramen is just as great as I remember. The pork tonkatsu is flame seared and has an excellent charred flavor, very different than normal tonkatsu pork but still melts in your mouth. The broth is flavorful and ginger-forward, but not too salty to where it's overpowering. Great portions of noodles that makes for a satisfying lunch. Kata's ramen still bats for the top 5 in Houston in my book. Always happy to make it back for their lunch when I've got the time.
Nothing was super bad but I was also not impressed with the meal, especially given the higher end prices. The chili oil dumplings with the sauce in a pipette looks cool but is kinda gimmicky. Black pepper salmon nigiri was great as it should be. One of the rolls with the eel sauce on top (I forget the name) was too salty for my liking, which is a shame because I really like eel.
Favorite meal of our entire trip. Went with a group of 6 and ordered the perfect amount of food. Most things are shareable. The menu leans traditional Japanese and there's something for everyone. I was blown away with every single dish we had. Highlights: -the nigiri sampler was SO tasty and the proportion of fish to rice was perfect. Favorite bites were the roe and fatty tuna -the strawberry shaved ice cream - they ship their ice from Japan which seems the perfect amount of luxuriousness -the beef skewers were seasoned perfectly, cooked to the perfect temperature, and so juicy -the uni chawanmushi - need I say more?! It was such a treat to have with the beautiful piece of uni right on top Service was quick, attentive, and we had a fantastic time. Around 7 it was a packed house! Great vibes for date night, a family dinner, or to bring your parents. The restaurant was spacious and it felt vibrant. Would come back again in a heart beat!
A bunch of people always ask me what's my favorite sushi spot in Houston is. And it's so tough because we have so many amazing options. Kata robata is definitely up there for me! They have been a Houston staple for ages, and their quality always stays consistent. They have such great options to choose from and we love coming here for a special occasion or just a date night. Our favorites to get- - Texas Kobe beef skewers 9/10 - Yuzu marinated salmon sashimi 9/10 - Wagyu katsu sando- 10/10 - Lobster Mac and cheese - 10/10 - Different nigiri- always 10/10 - Tropical spicy tuna roll 8/10 - Texas hamachi roll 9/10 - Rising sun roll I have yet to try their sister restaurant Katami! But I'm excited to go there soon.
Kata Robata was an amazing experience from start to finish! We decided to try several of the daily specials along with a few menu favorites, and everything was absolutely delicious. From the specials menu, we started with the spicy garlic coconut milk mussels made with fresh Prince Edward Island/British Columbia mussels in a rich spicy garlic coconut cream sauce, topped with green onions and served with toasted ciabatta bread. The broth was incredible and packed with flavor. As an appetizer, we ordered the Texas Wagyu Hot Stone Bowl -- the only rice item on the menu at the time -- made with rice, egg, kimchi sauce, tawan mushrooms, sesame, and green onion. It was prepared tableside for us, which made the experience even more fun and interactive. We also tried the Spicy Soy Ramen with braised ground pork, chili oil, soy milk broth, soft boiled egg, wakame, green onion, and micro cilantro. The flavors were rich, comforting, and had the perfect amount of spice. The Nagasaki Champon Ramen was another standout with clams, shrimp, cabbage, pork, onion, ginger, and micro cilantro in a flavorful broth that tasted fresh and authentic. The restrooms were very Japanese-inspired and beautifully maintained, adding to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Gabby was an amazing waitress -- attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire dining experience even better. Then there was dessert: Green Tea soufflé and chocolate milk bread pudding! I hope i get a picture of it!!! Service is GREAT! Drinks are filled. Needs are met- and exceeded!!!0 Parking is self parking, but it was worth it. We will definitely be back again to try many more items on the menu! Come early if you want to hear your partner it gets LOUD!
Great service, make a rezy!!! Food was amazing. Make a reservation for sure. We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed We split four rolls with us three girls, and it was perfect . My fave was the spicy tuna roll and the Longhorn. The Longhorn was a bit of an OG with some tempura in there. Our server, I forgot his name was very nice. He had glasses.. Separate bathroom, bathrooms for him and her Free parking in front. You start the meal like you do in Japan with a hot wet towel. This is my first time at kata robota , but I'll be back!! The lychee martini was fab tooo, super strong and sweet enough. One of my top places for a lychee tini!
I've heard so many great things about Kata Robata and I'm glad we had an opportunity to check them out. An easy 10/10 experience! Went in during their lunch hours, upon entering I was greeted and informed that tables were being cleaned and prepared. I waited for all of 5 minutes before being seated. Soon after someone dropped off two waters for us. Shortly after that, Thao, our server stopped by to give an overview of the menu. Something she noted was that they were out of many things/food items. Specifically dishes containing lobster. We ordered the following: -Ocean Picante Roll -Miso Cod Bento -Longhorn Roll Honey I will be returning ANY chance I get! Any chance I take! That Longhorn Roll was something serious! Packed with flavor, fresh, and delicious. 20/10. Now as for the Ocean Picante Roll- I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite. I'd give it an 8/10. That's a pretty high rating. Very good regardless. The Miso Cod Bento is served with seaweed salad, agedashi tofu, your choice of chicken teriyaki or chicken karaage, steamed rice, miso soup. And the food was fantastic!! Many people do not like tofu and guess what? I'm not many people. It's lightly fried to perfection! Kata Robata has an ambiance that makes you feel as if you're in an upscale space, yet not too stuffy or over the top. The lighting is perfect and it feels like a cozy meal with someone you love or like. Great for lunch, dinner, happy hour, or a nice date. I'll be returning very soon!
I've been to Kata Robata so many times, and it never disappoints. The quality and consistency are just top notch. This time I had the jalapeño hamachi and Yuzu salmon to start. Both were solid, but the salmon really blew me away. Super thin, super flavorful. The tuna and snapper sashimi were fresh and clean, exactly what you would expect. I tried the Texas Hamachi roll too, which was good but kind of overlapped flavor wise with the hamachi starter. Next time I'll probably pick one or the other. The Rising Sun roll was fine, but the Caribbean roll with lobster? Easily the winner. Don't forget to try their skewers as well! I also love that their rolls aren't drowning in sauce because you can actually taste the fish. All in all, another great meal. I'll definitely be back!!
Wanted to celebrate my birthday here with my husband and small dog as this restaurant has been on my list since I moved to Houston. But I'm really disappointed by the inconsistency here. Both Yelp and Google list this place as pet-friendly, which is a big reason I chose to call ahead. However, when I spoke to someone on the phone, I was told they are not pet-friendly. It's frustrating when businesses don't keep their information accurate across platforms especially for something as important as whether pets are allowed. Please update your listings so customers know what to expect. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I'm giving one star for misleading information.
Came with my coworkers -- a party of 7 -- to celebrate a birthday and a new job. We called the morning of to make a reservation, and I'm glad we did because the place was packed for Friday lunch. Highly recommend booking ahead. Their lunch menu is such a good deal for the quality you get, and it even comes with a bowl of miso soup. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but there's street parking behind the restaurant if you circle around. Overall, great spot for a group lunch.

Been coming here for about 7 or 8 years by now and I can't remember a single time the service and food were less than amazing. Last night we went to celebrate a birthday and we ordered the uni cold soba noodles, which were incredible, got some sushi, and had the lobster Mac and cheese, which although sounds cliche, is incredibly good and definitely a must try. At the end of the meal we got the matcha shaved ice, which was amazing as always. Overall probably my favorite sushi restaurant and one of the most consistently delicious restaurants out there. read more
Called ahead for a 9pm reservation for 7 people. They seated us right away as soon as half of our party was here. Service was truly amazing. They have multiple people serving you to clear the empty plates, refill waters, and even got us new plates halfway through our meal. Our main server was Khai, and he was wonderful! It was my first time here and I'd definitely come back. Everything here is flavorful and amazing. My top favorite dishes were the foie gras and duck soba noodles and the uni spoons. The pork belly was MELT IN YOUR MOUTH. It was so soft and yummy! Ordered the a few rolls and nigiri pieces but I liked the Texas Hamachi roll the best. Honestly for how busy they were and how large our table was, the food came out so fast. Not much else to say other than I had a great experience. I'd recommend Kata to about anyone after that dinner. Why 5 stars? Because this experience was worth the wait. --- --- --- I have way too many bookmarked restaurants in Houston, but Kata Robata was way up on my shortlist of "super bookmarks". That would be a nice feature for Yelp to add - maybe they could follow the Elite badge theme and call them gold bookmarks. But whatever you call the top of the list, Kata Robata was on it. So when my mom and I wanted to meet somewhere in Houston for lunch, this was where we ended up. And all of the hype and anticipation was worth it. This place rocks. Here's what we ordered: Texas Kobe Beef Skewers - The meat was so tender, I thought I was being punk'd. Lobster Mac-n-Cheese - The portion was really big and it was pretty much everything you hope for in lobster mac. Premium Fatty Tuna/Toro - The best I've had outside of Tokyo. It's $14 a bite, but worth every penny. Longhorn Roll - Chef's kiss. Pretty much perfect sushi. Caribbean Roll - Really enjoyable, but slightly up-staged by the Longhorn Roll. Overall, a great experience. An expensive lunch, but I was happy to pay for this kind of quality. Definitely one of the best meals I've had since moving back to Houston about 18 months ago. read more

Came here for dinner with some friends who live in Houston and highly recommended this place to me. We ordered family style and got so many things! Kata Robata is truly next level. Honestly I was overwhelmed by how good everything was here. Japanese Amberjack Sashimi with Foie Gras: 8/10. The sashimi was so thinly sliced yet still full of flavor, and the foie gras was incredibly buttery and tender. Seared Blue Fin Tuna: 10/10. One of my favorite dishes of the night. The tuna was so fatty, so savory, and felt like it was going to melt in my mouth. I believe this was on a separate menu as one of the specials of the night. Foie Gras and Duck with Cold Soba: 8/10. Both the foie gras and duck breast were so tender, and I really liked the slight tanginess from the cold soba noodles- it made the dish feel super fresh! Kobe Beef Skewers: 9/10. How did they manage to make literally everything here so buttery!! Absolutely delicious and melt-in-your-mouth beef. Roasted Bone Marrow: 7/10. This was very buttery as well, though there really wasn't much to eat here. Foie Gras & Duck Chawanmushi: 9/10. Everything in this dish worked so well together. The gingko nuts inside were a fun and chewy surprise! Toro & Ikura: 9/10. You could tell the toro was high quality, even when served as a roll. The ikura on top was juicy and gave a fun pop with each bite! Rising Sun: 10/10. The truffle came out so strongly in this, I was literally in heaven!!!! "Kakuni" Pork Belly: 9/10. Perfectly braised and such high quality pork belly. Green Tea Soufflé Cheesecake: 8/10. Soft, fluffy, not too heavy in flavor- kind of similar to Japanese cheesecake. You definitely will need to book a reservation because this place was completely packed up until closing time (and rightly so!) Prices were definitely pretty high here; we split the bill amongst the three of us, and it was about $110 per person (including tax and tip). Not terrible considering how good the food was and the variety of things we got to try, in addition to the upscale dining experience. I would love to come here again next time I'm in town! read more

There aren't enough great things to say about Kata Robata!! This is a place where we come to for a top quality meal and service. It's definitely a date night go to and for any and all our impromptu date nights and friends gatherings! We love bringing friends here that come from out of town. Everyone always has the best time and leaves raving about the food and service. My all time favorite dish is definitely the waygu sando. You can't go wrong with any sushi selection. It's always super fresh and delicious!! The hot stone bowl fried rice is a group favorite along with the jalapeño hamachi. Kata is must try!! read more
Overall - told by tons of friends to try this spot but not my favorite sushi restaurant. Maybe we came on an off night. This restaurant does have good options for people who do not eat raw fish though Get: fried green tomatoes - honestly incredible. Kobe beef skewers and gyoza are good Shaved ice - also great! Avoid: hamachi and jalapeno (just okay), several nigiri were alright but there was no flavor to the fish, it desperately needed the soy sauce and wasabi, rising sun roll - okay This place is hard to get a reservation at - it's always packed! I've been told by numerous people this is their favorite sushi in Houston, and to me, it was an alright restaurant with prices that cannot be justified by the flavor of the food. I would say Uchi is slightly more expensive but to me has better quality food. We started with the fried green tomatoes and Kobe beef skewers and both of these were great! The fried green tomatoes with the kimchi sauce was superb and the Kobe beef was incredibly tender. Their hamachi and jalapeño was fine but nothing incredible. Then we got nigiri - all of my fish were okay but had absolutely no flavor, they just tasted like cold pieces of meat on rice. My friend got the vegetarian nigiri and hers were better than mine but still the two best were the mushroom pieces. The foie gras nigiri was also okay but lacked the depth of flavor you would expect. My friend got the gyoza and loved it! I had the rising sun roll and again it had no flavor at all. The shaved ice at the end was great and not too heavy. read more

Came here on a weekday for dinner after making a reservation, plenty of space in their parking lot. Personally, it stands out as one of the best sushi spots in town, offering a combination of top-notch sashimi/sushi dishes and hot Japanese cuisine -- all without a price tag like Uchi. They also have a nice selection of cocktails. Our server was knowledgeable and served the dishes in a well organized order. read more

Went during lunch on a Thursday. Lunch menu prices are pretty affordable. I got the miso black cod bento box and it was really good! I also highly recommend the pork shumai. My friends got the katsu don and sushi combo. They also really enjoyed their food. The service was very quick and the vibe was very modern Japanese. read more
The food here was SO good! We came here for lunch for the first time, and we were overwhelmed by the menu. Our server was extremely helpful and guided us on things to eat. Our favorite dish was the hamachi and jalapeno cold dish. It was probably the best thing we ate that night. It was so fresh but melted in your mouth. We also ate: King salmon nigiri (this was ok) Madai nigiri Otoro nigiri (melts in your mouth!) Yuzu Salmon cold dish Wagyu sandwiches (good, but not extraordinary) We also ordered 3 sushi rolls and they all knocked it out of the park. I believe it was the Longhorn, Rising Sun and Hamachi roll. Amazing experience if you're looking for high-end sushi restaurant with a fairly wide variety of quality fish served numerous ways. The food overall was nothing short of high quality, you'd be able to tell the restaurant put significant effort towards producing each and every dish on the menu everything we ordered was beautifully garnished and presented. We ordered the Kobe beef skewers, O-toro (Premium fatty tuna), Chu Toro (Medium fatty tuna), New Zealand King Salmon, Kampachi (Amberjack), Amberjack Sashimi with Foie Gras, Texas Wagyu Sando, and the strawberry/nutella kakigori shaved ice. All of the sashimi was beautifully plated and was some of the best tasting sashimi I've ever had. No fishiness detected from any of the sashimi and each piece had the perfect firmness and taste distinct to the type of fish we ordered. In particular, the amberjack stole the show for me! Only slight I had was that I wish the strawberry and nutella were a little more distributed throughout the kakigori, but barely a complaint. Our server was Thai, probably some of the best service I received at a fine dining establishment. Prompt and accommodating are understatements to describe our experience. He explained each dish with confidence and even had a fan to cool us from the houston heat! Overall, one of the best places not only to get an amazing Japanese culinary experience, but also to get some of the best service in fine dining. read more
My boyfriend and I came here last night and it was a great experience. We were seated immediately and the server was always fast to check on us. The inside is cozy and dim, and was more casual than I expected. Our table was clean and the booth was super comfy. I tried the Kokonatsu Lychee drink, and it was not my favorite due to the lack of sweetness, but that is a preference aspect. If you're a fan of a lychee gin drink that is tart and not super sweet, you should definitely give the Kokonatsu Lychee a try. It was crisp and not bad at all. For food, we shared the octopus crudo, some oysters with Kaluga caviar, and an assortment of nigiri including unagi, scallop foie gras, foie gras, sea bream, mackerel, shima aji, chutoro, and yellowtail. There may be some I am forgetting, but all the pieces were fresh and tasted great. The sea bream and shima aji were my absolute favorites. I am a huge fan of foie gras, and it was good here, but a bit too oily for my taste. I think I am used to the torching method of cooking foie gras, so it felt a bit greasy in my mouth. However, it was still super tasty and the portion size was awesome. Lastly, the winner of the show was the octopus crudo. It was so soft, perfectly chewy, and so good. Combined with the shiitake mushrooms, it was my favorite piece of the night. I would definitely recommend it. Our server was super nice, prompt, and I enjoyed the way he would say "yes!" after I would order something, to affirm he heard me. All these aspects made our experience enjoyable and we will hopefully be back. read more

First time here and it did NOT disappoint! My fiancé and I came for our anniversary celebration and the food and service was phenomenal! Although the restaurant was pretty full, we received our food pretty quickly. I didn't even get to take pictures of it all. My favorite dish by far was the wagyu panko sandos. I would come back just for that! We received a free dessert for our anniversary and it was delicious as well. read more

Omakase style for those times you want to enjoy yourself and offload some mental workload. Hot lychee sake kept flowing for easy conversations. Courses came out in well timed sequences. Server took our preferences and pleasantly surprised us with descriptions of each dish and how to eat it. Reservations highly recommended to avoid wait times, especially considering the competition for bar seating. read more
This is one of my favorite spots to eat Japanese food. Hands down. The menu always has something new to try, while keeping the bangers year round. In the dozens of times I've been here there really haven't been any misses, and with a menu as varied as the one at Kata that's tough to do. The sushi/sashimi is always fresh if you're interested in a simple yet proper sushi night. The hot dishes and specialty plates are creative and tasty. You can really have a delicious and eclectic meal when you visit. Staff is always knowledgeable and friendly, which helps if you are wanting to venture out of your comfort zone. This is one of my few 5 star reviews and they definitely earn it each time I visit. Parking can be a little tough during peak hours. And the prices are not the eye popping $ you'd see at Uchi. read more

The food was incredible - the miso marinated black cod was delightful, and while the kakuni pork belly was delicious I could have eaten that dish without the pork belly. It's hard to go wrong with grilled oyster mushrooms. The sushi was amazing - the o-toro, New Zealand king salmon, and the foie gras were my favorite bites. The warm blueberry cake with the Earl gray lemon ice cream was devoured, and anything with lychee will get my attention when it comes to drinks. That being said - I've been hearing about Kata for years; the service was a let down. Between the table next to us having a kid that was all over the place and the long waits in between us seeing our waiter there was definitely a bit to be desired. Our waiter was good - he was doing what he could but definitely was left feeling like our table was a bit of an afterthought at the back of the restaurant. I'd absolutely return, though. The food is worth it; I'd just want to try sitting in the main restaurant to see if the service is different. read more

The sashimi platter was awesome, the pork belly was delicious, oyster with caviar was super fresh, hamachi collard was flavorful and tender and the A5 wagyu skewers was so tender it's a must. read more
We came back to one of our favorite places for sushi, and we had the chance to try some new favorites! The foie gras and duck chawanmushi is a highly recommended one! It's like an egg custard bowl with foie gras and mushrooms all inside, and each bite melted in your mouth with all the flavors. SO good. I sort of forgot the name for the second one, but it was Caviar along with some oysters on a bed of ice. It was our first time trying caviar, and we really liked it! We definitely reordered some of our favorites like the Texas Wagyu Katsu Sando, Chef's Sashimi for Two, and Caribbean Roll because they are classics and so delicious. They even offer to fry the shrimp heads to snack on as well! Very crisp and much recommend! We also tried their Tropical Spicy Tuna roll, which has mango inside and made it very refreshing and delicious. Loved this! I also had their lychee martini, which I believe might have been a seasonal cocktail? But I love lychee martinis, and this was very good and definitely crept up on me later LOL read more

Celebrated our first post wedding lunch here and it did not disappoint! Between two people we got the chirashi bowl, sushi platter, wagyu sandwich, and the toro uni caviar sushi. We left completely stuffed! Service was phenomenal, our server was very friendly and congratulated our marriage. Will definitely be back next time we're in Houston read more

The wait service at Kata Robata is always impeccable. All the Saturday night reservations were booked up the day before on Resy, so I figured I'd call the restaurant directly to see if they might be able to reserve a table for 4 and sure enough, they accommodated us last minute. The girls at hostess station are always welcoming, and we loved our waitress last night (did not catch her name at the beginning but she has a badass tattoo sleeve). My parents came here with my sister last weekend and said that their waiter Khan was exceptional too. Okay, as for the food. We went a little overboard. In order from just ok to good to phenomenal to absolutely must order: Grilled Oyster Mushrooms- I liked the texture but the taste was very simple. Grilled Shishito Peppers with Kimchi Aioli- They were a little hot for me so I stopped eating them so my tastebuds wouldn't be overwhelmed for the other dishes we ordered. Foie Gras & Duck Chawanmushi- I think the gingko nut is an acquired taste and while I liked the rest of the dish, it was not great for sharing. Pork Belly & Fresh Papaya Salad- I love papaya and this was refreshing and light. Banana Crème Brûlée- I actually think this would've benefited from keeping the banana flavor isolated to the caramelized slices on top. Still delicious. Chef's Sashimi for 2/4- We had a nice selection of 4 slices of sashimi each. My favorite was chu-toro (medium grade fatty tuna) and my least favorite were the raw scallop and raw spot prawn. Hits and misses but great to try new things. Longhorn Roll- While many places have rolls with similar ingredients, the crunch on the shrimp tempura was so exceptionally fresh. Iberico Pork Shumai- Piping hot and delicious, and the pipette made the dish reminiscent of a Japanese version of xiao long bao. Hamachi & Jalapeño Sashimi- This was the first dish to hit the table and it went quickly. Yellowtail is my favorite sashimi and yuzu citrus is a classic companion. "Kakuni" Pork Belly- The pork belly is nowhere near as tender as their wagyu beef skewers but the sweet soy reduction is similar if not the same. Combine that with the runny egg yolk and it's a recipe for success. Texas Hamachi Roll- I might be biased since yellowtail is my favorite, but this roll is the perfect balance between simple and complex. Miso Marinated Black Cod- My family was saying that our portion size was smaller this time, but I had no complaints. Delicious sweet and salty miso and melt in your mouth texture. Chocolate Bread Pudding- Phenomenal dessert. It's served hot on an iron skillet with melting toasted rice ice cream that has a thicker, almost stretchy consistency. I will order this every time. Texas Kobe Beef Skewers- While one of my pieces was almost entirely fat, there is honestly nothing better here. They're marinated for 3 days and melt in your mouth. Order it. The service is consistently excellent every single time I'm here, the waiters and waitresses are super helpful and usually make suggestions that we love! The nigiri is always the freshest fish with no aftertaste or silver skin, and the apps (although a little pricier than they need to be) are always good. The wagyu beef Sando was incredible and I've been thinking about it for a solid week! The salmon crudo dish is the best dish I've had in a long time! I hope it never leaves the menu! read more

Consistently great food and service here. Perfect for date night/HH/girls night out etc. the portions are good size for sharing and the quality is always A1. The ramen is so good. Been meaning and wanting to try this place from the moment I was told that this was one of the best if not the best place to get sushi in town. Finally decided to try the restaurant before moving back to California. The service while was good could have been better. My friend asked for a refill of his hot matcha a couple times before someone finally came to refill his cup. The server seemed Knowledgeable about the different selections of fish/sushi that was offered. Ordered the wagyu skewers and as expected the wagyu was melt in your mouth, rich and delicious. Kata Robata is my go-to stop when I'm in Houston and I need to celebrate something or go on a date night. I love the ambiance and the staff. One day I want to try the omakase too, but until then I love love love everything I've ordered off their menu. Every single dessert I've had, and we try to switch it up every time we go, has knocked it out of the park. I think my favorite is the green tea soufflé. It's literally the best dessert I've had at a restaurant. Now to the main entrees-- the kobe sliders with the milk bread, the sushi, and the sashimi are so excellent. The fish is so fresh and served with such care. You can really taste the effort that goes into each dish by the chef. The prices are a little high, but I personally think everything is worth it. There hasn't been a single dish I was unsatisfied with. The drinks are also stellar. I love asking the waiter what they recommend and going with that. I'm always happy with the drink I get. Service was exceptional! The ambiance of the restaurant was pretty loud at the time but the waiter was very friendly and kept coming back to check on us and clear our table as well as give suggestions. We had a good time at Kata Robata. This place came highly recommended to us for the fresh sushi. They had a special menu for the day and we ordered some items off it. Their sashimi you need to clarify how many slices come in one order because you may end up with 1 slice vs 2 for roughly $8-12. Pricey in my opinion and of the ones we ordered they did not stand out. Show-stoppers: Wagyu tsukune: A5 wagyu and pork meatballs. How much wagyu is in it? Idk. But the meatball was so tender and flavorful. Tropical spicy tuna roll: the fish was so fresh and the salmon had really good umami flavor Mango kakigori: omg this was the highlight of the meal. The ice was so soft and the mango sauce really shone through. The yuzu whipped cream on top had a strong yuzu flavor. The toasted rice ice cream at the bottom was so sweet and complemented the dessert well. Easily one of the best desserts I've had in Houston! Ambiance was okay, was very cold inside so bring a jacket! Our waiter was pleasant and not overbearing. Fairly loud inside from all the guests. Beautiful restaurant with great food! We got the sashimi platter that came with around 8 different types of fish and 4 slices each. Each one was fresh and delicious, melted in my mouth! The kakigori was so light and fluffy (apparently they use ice imported from Japan). Perfect amount of syrup - wasn't overly sweet or bland. Are the owners japanese?
The head chef, and several of the assistant chefs, are Japanese. However, the majority of the restaurant is owned by the Chinese family behind the Azuma restaurants.
Does anyone have any details on their omakase? Price? Do I need to specify that's what we would like to order in the reservation upfront?
